Katty's Complaint: Why Doesn't USA Have 40-Year Plan Like China's?

By Mark Finkelstein | September 22, 2011 | 08:07

A  A

Move over, Tom Friedman--there's another MSMer looking longingly at Communist China.  In an infamous column, Friedman wrote of his envy of the power of the Chinese despots to impose "critically important decisions."  He's been at it again lately

Now comes Sino-Commie-phile Katty Kay.  On Morning Joe today, the BBCer criticized the USA for not having a "40-year plan for medical innovation" like the Chinese do.  Joe Scarborough was on-point with his comeback. Video after the jump.

Watch Katty complain about our lack of a planned economy . . . while putting in a plug for higher taxes.

KATTY KAY: You have this new group [presumably referring to Tea-Party Republicans] that's come into Congress who is also not prepared to compromise on issues like raising taxes. There is going to have to be some tax-raising as part of this deal! It's going to have to happen! So why not accept that it's going to have to happen and do what the country needs to be done?  . . . You almost wonder whether--what I love about this country, compared often to Europe, is that there is a sense of optimism, that things are possible . . . I almost think the optimism is shifting into a sense of denial. I look at the political leadership in this country and you almost wonder whether they are in denial about what is happening around the world and what could happen in this country if they don't get their act together and do the kinds of things that need to be done . . . That's what I'm saying about the state of denial. That there is not this recognition that there are other countries out there that are doing these things.  China has a 40-year plan for medical innovation. And you know they're going to do it. Where's America's plan for medical innovation?

JOE SCARBOROUGH: I will guarantee you it's not in the middle of a Washington, DC bureaucracy.

<sound of duct tape ripping off roll>

Submitted by motherbelt on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 8:24am.

We really need to get over this delusion that because people say things with a very classy British accent, they are smart.

Having a 40-year "plan" doesn't mean squat.  It can be changed at the drop of a hat.

Every year this government comes up with a new "10-year plan."  Extending that out to 40 wouldn't change a thing.

Hey Katty, how's that government plan for health care working out in England?

You Hear Katty With a Valley Girl Accent You Have Her Spiked

Submitted by Avitar on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 1:52pm.

  • Pick five diseases per year Once pick they stay on a list until three cures are developed.
  • Provide Tax credits for three cures for each disease
  • Each tax credit should be a multiple of the costs the FDA imposes on certifying cures
  • Pay tax credit over ten years as long as the cure is produced in the US
  • Allow the company that produces the cure to sell the tax credits to other companies.
  • Pay only for cures and vaccines
  • Repeat the next year.

With a sure pot of money businessmen would be scouting medical talent the way the major league hunts hundred mile an hour fast balls.  They would be elbowing to get speed research to get at those tax credits.  It would also be cheap.

The Government owes nothing until we get a cure.  The  Nation would have the benefits on not having the loss of productivity of the sick.

This a Reagan system and would halve the cost of healthcare in fifteen years. Simple and only a couple of hundred Government doctors to determine the cure does in fact cure the disease.

That is a plan Kitty. If they do this for forty years the Chinese will have nothing to do because American healthcare will be providing all of their healthcare.

Who are these people?

Submitted by PA Conservative on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 8:29am.

Tried to type that in my best Jerry Seinfeld voice...

I'm getting very tired of these Brits (none of whom are citizens) trying tell us how to run our country. First off, this idiot didn't even realize how she contradicted herself..."What I love about this country, and you don't see it in Europe, is its optimism" (Paraphrased). Did she not just make the argument that European style socialism just doesn't work? Moron. Then, she goes on to argue with herself that there should be some type of central planning in this country. Lady, why do you think there's no optimism in Europe? Central Planning/socialism! You gotta love the total intellectual dishonesty of the left. All things, in their simple minds, start with "America bad, Europe/China good". Then, within one conversation, they completely contradict that theory. The sad thing is, they don't even realize it. Motherbelt, please pass any leftover duct tape you may have....

That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government...

40 year plans

Submitted by Agnostic on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 8:41am.

or even 100 year plans are fine as long as they are not too specific. The problem with governments and their long-term plans is they try to become too specific in their goals, usually because it helps a party donor, and the country gets locked into fiscal disasters.

Example: 80% energy independence in 50 years is a reasonable goal/plan.

40% of energy coming from solar and wind is a horrible goal/plan. It does not account for new technologies and forces the market in a known direction at the cost of potential new ideas.

It is the difference between the goal of putting a man on the moon and the goal of putting a man on the moon using ethanol based fuels. One opens the door to possibilities and the other shuts down creativity.

I howled when I heard her say this on Morning Joe today

Submitted by Galvanic on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 9:40am.

Anyone who has been paying attention to the accelerating pace of technologies today would tell her that a 10-year plan is ridiculous, let alone a '40 year plan.'

Look at all the market-driven innovation in the United States, and we have no "plan."

In the first 6 decades of the 20th Century, Communist nations were famous for issuing their 5-Year Economic Plans, almost all of which failed miserably.

Kay may admire the the PRC, where her trade would be severaly restricted, but she understands little about it.

Just this week it was announced that researchers put on the web a video game that delt with finding a cure for AIDs. With in 3 weeks the gamers solved the problem enough that researchers now have the building blocks to go after a real cure.

Who needs a 40 year plan when real innovation is taking place today.

Perfect.

Submitted by Blonde on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 11:05am.

You've identified THE perfect metaphor for government vs. private sector solutions and innovation.

This government (not to mention others) has spent how many billions of dollars trying to find the cure to AIDs, and a bunch of gamers approached it from a different perspective and reached a totally different solution costing how much? (My guess would be they did it as an intellectual exercise).

The other thing this nitwit totally misses is the fact that "we" do the work for most of the rest of the world. There is no FDA in any of the Latin American countries....they basically look at the work that's done here by ours. If a drug is approved here, they say okay, fine.

A 40 year plan.

Submitted by CobraMan on Thu, 09/22/2011 - 2:12pm.

A 40 year plan, Is that anything like a thousand year Reich? Yea, we all know how well those types of "plans' work in the real world.

Hay, Katty, WE have a "plan" that is ageless. It's called the Constitution. Each State has one, as does the federal government itself. Everything else is transitory, as planned. This is because that we are smart enough to realize that, in a constantly changing universe, most things, you know, CHANGE over time, so most "plans" must change with them. For, if they don't, those "plans" become irrelevant. Why else do you think that things like our military's budget can only be authorized for no more than two, count them, two, years at a time? This is because, as the needs of the military change year after year, the needs of the military's budget also changes, so long term plans are useless.

By the way, Katty, I wouldn't be so admiring of any long term plan that China produces, if I were you. The last time they tried one of these long term plans, the "modernization" under Mao, MILLIONS of people starved to death!

The Citizens of each State shall be entitled to all Privileges and Immunities of Citizens in the several States. The US Constitution
