Schultz's Class-Warfare 'Lean Forward': Why Are We Letting Top 2% Win Over Other 98?

By Mark Finkelstein | October 18, 2010 | 18:43

A  A

In August, Ed Schultz reportedly erupted in the MSNBC newsroom over being excluded from the network's election night promos.  According to the NY Post, network honchos threatened to fire Schultz if he pulled a similar stunt again.

Could there be some kiss-and-make-up going on at 30 Rock?  Of all the MSNBC personages, the network apparently selected Schultz first to have his own spot in the "Lean Forward" series of network promos.  It aired this afternoon during Chris Matthews "Hardball" . . .  and the theme was pure class warfare.

Scolded Schultz: "Why are we letting the top 2% of the population win over the other 98?" View video after jump.

In Schultz's mind, there is a war out there.  The top 2% can only "win" by defeating the others.  The pie is only so big.  The fat cats can only get rich by impoverishing their fellow citizens.

In fairness, Ed might be on to something.  During the promo, he also asks "why can't America find solutions to its problems?" And there's little doubt that if the redistributionist "solutions" Schultz has in mind were ever adopted, the pie would indeed shrink, and government would determine all winners and losers.

Consider the chilling "all your money is belong to us" implications of Schultz's use of "letting" . . .

Special Ed is so frantic beccause he wants to be Limbaugh so badly he can taste it. He isn't and never will be but he  refuses to see that. It isn't all he can't and won't see but that is a story for another day.

It is called Sturgeon's Law

Submitted by Avitar on Tue, 10/19/2010 - 3:00am.

Sturgeon's Law  is roughly that " ninty percent of everything is crap"

In the back rooms where Mathmatics is put to work and politicians never go this has been formalized as a matimatical power law the:"Pareto principle". It is an observation that 80%  of results come from 20% of the population.  But since it is a power law 80% of the 80% of results is coming from only 20% of the 20% of the population.

Since the ovservation is diminsionless you start following this observation down you find that a very few men and women do change the Earth and their countries.

It is likely that America's founding Fathers were aware of some informal version of Pareto principle since if an inventor like say Ben Franklin can keep more of the money he earns he will produce more developments.  This has servfed America well not just in the inverors that we know like Thomas Edison and Allazander Gram Bell but for the people who got rich supplying resources to Tesla and Lockheed's Kelly Johnson.  This can all be clasified as the Anti-Obama law of nature.

They're wealth doesn't give

Submitted by Bretner on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 10:04pm.

They're wealth doesn't give them the right to control the country and our government.

In the last decade, CEO pay has skyrocketed while manufacturing jobs were shipped away by the millions, and wages have become stagnant.

Some they get rich off American consumption, creating cheap products by slave laborers that got that job from a laid off american, while others make money off of speculation and betting against the housing bubble they helped create, thus not creating anything but foreclosures.

Then there are those 2% that have made their money the honest way through free but fair capitalism, not crony capitalism

Another talking-point spewing, whiny, sniveling, liberal lemming. I'm really starting to believe the liberals are some kind of hive mind, because I don't think I've ever heard a single original (or sane, for that matter) thought from any of them. Go on HuffPo, Kos, Salon, or anywhere else libs are given a free soapbox and sheltered from dissenting views, and you will hear the same things over and over again. Actually, if you value your sanity at all, don't go there. The complete lack of individual thought is creepy beyond belief. The only explanation I can come up with is that liberals are part of a hive mind and thus are incapable of thinking for themselves.

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

There is absolutely zero name-calling.  HuffPo's comments are fully moderated, and if there is an abusive remark which gets posted, it is removed ASAP.

I haven't checked Salon lately, so I shouldn't make any representations about the tone of the comments until I do so.  My recollection is that there was some pretty aggressive dialogue from both directions.

I think most of us have a tendency to do that [i.e. overgeneralize]--particularly in political website forums and comment sections--so certainly no apologies are necessary for that.

As far as "plentiful" dissenters at HuffPo, it's admittedly a very relative term.  I just know that I have been surprised by the seemingly large numbers of contrarian views--from the "right"--on those occasions where I've waded through lengthy comment strings.

Yes you.  Dirtbreath.

Why did Obama not only pour money into Wall Street, but also sieze control of GM and Chrysler, overthrowing 200 years of bankruptcy law in the process?

Why did Obama and his Democrat friends in the Congress usurp the authority to decide which firms shall be allowed to fail and which shall be propped up at taxpayer expense?

Why did Obama and his Democrat friends in the Congress set in motion what will become a governmenttakeover of all medicine in America if it is not repealed?

Why did Obama extort $20B out of BP, ostensibly for damages caused by an oil spill. completely bypassing US law on the subject and the courts?

I could ask endless questions like this.  The answer to them all is the same :  Obama is a tyrant and the Democrats are overthrowing the Constitution and  implementing tyranny.

If scrubbing the Federal bench with the power of Congress is so outrageous, then I presume you claim Thomas Jefferson was outrageous as well for having done exactly this in 1801 and 1802?

I said we need to impeach and remove every one of those justices who have admitted to substituting foreign law for the US Constitution in deciding cases before them and in so doing violated their oath of office.

You denied any such had ever occurred as I recall.  I proceeded to show you a public admission from one of the perpetrators and told you there were others.   In your reply, you CONCEDED my point by naming the others.  Do we need to link the thread where this exchange occurred or will you concede yet again?

BTW, that isn't sawdust.  It's your ashes.  And you didn't bother to debate my points, preferring instead to change the subject.  Looks like I own your sorry ass once again.

Bush bailed them out? Read the Constitution and the record!!!!!

Submitted by TheHistorian on Tue, 10/19/2010 - 5:46am.

Bush may have signed the legislation (he is, after all, NOT a conservative).  But if you remember history, the dhimmicrats had to use their legislative majority (since 2006) to pass something which he had to sign.  Further, the bill required the Secretary of the Treasury (NOT THE PRESIDENT) to make the decisions on bailouts.

And the great Obama voted FOR it.  The only difference is that he lied about it like the rest of the dhimmicrats  http://newsbusters.org/blogs/tom-blumer/2009/03/13/record-shows-obama-wa...

Further, if you remember, there was the need to vote to release the second half of the funds.  Done after Obama became President.  Most Republicans voted against.  Most Democrats voted for.  Here is what a media site had to say.  http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2009/01/15/4425172-breaking-down-th...

But the housing bubble was created well before W. There is plenty of blame for both sides.

Much of the mess, while not necessarily beginning with the CRA of 1977, was certainly buoyed by the legislation in the nineties requiring more CRA compliance from lenders. Then Freddie and Fannie were tasked with underwriting these bad loans to risky borrowers.

The only reason this didn't happen sooner is that home values skyrocketed, making it viable for borrowers to sell their homes, and repay the mortgages, avoiding higher level of defaults.

This of course changed when home values fell. Reselling homes didn't garner enough to repay the mortgages, so defaults rose, a lot.

Add to that the fact that wealthy, more sophisticated borrowers defaulted.

This article sums it up pretty well.

Life insn't a 6 year-old soccer organization where all the players get "trophys". Some people will own their own business and employ others, some will invent things and others won't.

Donald Trump has decalred bankruptcy at least 5 times in his life. Bill Gates didn't finish college.

Life isn't fair. The government's job is to make the playing field as level as possible, not try and equalize the results. When you treat people differently because of their income and penalize the high earners to give it to the low earners, you create a disincentive to achieve and create an under-achieving society.

Submitted by shannon76 on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 7:55pm.

I find the whole 'Lean Forward' campaign extremely annoying. It's strange to watch the TV screen and then periodically this random message appears: Lean Forward. It's bizarre and distracting. It's like something out of Orwell's 1984. These phrases just appear for brief periods of time. They may as well say: "Drink More Coffee" or "Have a Nice Day".

But "Lean Forward" has this strange quality to it. I know what the campaign is all about, but I still end up seeing those words and thinking, 'What do you mean lean forward?? And do what exactly? Change the channel? Fine. Wouldn't be the first time...'

They need to get rid of that campaign. It's a distracting (and therefore laughable) Fail. They may be thinking, 'Hey, they're talking about us', but I for one am laughing at them.

Of course, now that Obama has outdone Bush on every kind of secret wiretap or secret tribunals or executive order being used to assassinate Americans overseas, Slashdot's people have nothing to say. Stupid hypocrites.

After you Libs are done

Submitted by Van Halen on Mon, 10/18/2010 - 11:45pm.

After you Libs are done bending over or bending forward or leaning Left or whatever it is you do over there, you may want to report on the 10.0 percent unemployment Gallup has up on their site.

Great going, Libs!

Favrorite Bertrand Russell Quotation

Submitted by yutsnark on Tue, 10/19/2010 - 1:41am.

Work is of two kinds: first, altering the position of matter at or near the earth's surface relatively to other such matter; second, telling other people to do so. The first kind is unpleasant and ill paid; the second is pleasant and highly paid. The second kind is capable of indefinite extension: there are not only those who give orders, but those who give advice as to what orders should be given. Usually two opposite kinds of advice are given simultaneously by two organized bodies of men; this is called politics. The skill required for this kind of work is not knowledge of the subjects as to which advice is given, but knowledge of the art of persuasive speaking and writing, i.e. of advertising.

Throughout Europe, though not in America, there is a third class of men, more respected than either of the classes of workers. There are men who, through ownership of land, are able to make others pay for the privilege of being allowed to exist and to work. These landowners are idle, and I might therefore be expected to praise them. Unfortunately, their idleness is only rendered possible by the industry of others; indeed their desire for comfortable idleness is historically the source of the whole gospel of work. The last thing they have ever wished is that others should follow their example.

Favorite Quotations

Submitted by Jer on Tue, 10/19/2010 - 2:06am.

Not bad, but I started nodding off after the first hundred words or so.  I generally prefer something a bit more succint and straight to the point, like..."Loose lips sink ships"...that sorta thing.

OK Jer, here's a shorter quotation:

Those Hyper Evil Rich People

Submitted by Unsane on Tue, 10/19/2010 - 11:56pm.

Leftists feel guilty for having possession, so their solution is to use the power of the state to steal from everybody.  That's much better.

I can tell from the few posts I have seen here that you harbor intense, possionate, overwhelming hatred for every single human being that as much as earns a single penny over per capita income.  Maybe you and your new buddy Jer here would feel better if the government passed a law ordering the immediate extermination of everyone in the country who, again, earned as much as a single dime above per capita income?

I'd in fact argue you are so full of hate for them that the only way you can attain an orgasm is if you were to walk down the street one day and see that every lamppost and telephone pole in the land had some Hyper-Evil Rich Bastard hanging from it.

Sharing HIS wealth???

Submitted by Pilgrim1949 on Tue, 10/19/2010 - 11:11am.

So....I'm sure this overpaid (and over-fill-in-the-blank) yapping gum-flapper is more than willing to part with a considerable chunk of his hefty salary to help out the majority of the populace that does not make anywhere close to his hefty (there's that word again) paycheck.

It's only fair that folks in his minority-population, highly-paid profession share their wealth with the rest of the great unwashed hoi poloi.

I'm more than willing to be so blessed by his eager benevoloence.  I am sure that his hefty(!) compassionate heart will be willing to empty his hefty purse of that aweful, white-liberal-guilt-laden, hefty lucre burden to absolve his hefty soul of its obvious torment.

Waiting for His Heftiness' largesse to be dispensed... any minute now, I'm sure.... here it comes.....

Libtards demonize the "top"

Submitted by mattm on Tue, 10/19/2010 - 12:04pm.

Libtards demonize the "top" 2% while advocating increased taxes (directly or through scams like cap-and-trade) on anyone lucky enough to have a job or be an employer.

What would happen if the media started ripping on the bottom-feeding freeloaders who sit on their rear-ends all day waiting for a government handout?

The bigger question is...

Submitted by stage9 on Tue, 10/19/2010 - 1:47pm.

why are we allowing the bottom 2% dictate the direction of our country to the upper 98%?

Defense of Fat Ed

Submitted by Jerry Mack on Tue, 10/19/2010 - 4:51pm.

Fat Ed is as liberal as the others and on many occassions has a bigger audience than Tingles. I am in favor of him being in the promos and on the tube on election night. It will be a chance for America to see why a network is one circle from going down the toilet.  I will not watch because I know that Sheffield or Baker will make someone watch. Then the next day we can see the low lights.

A better question would be ...

Submitted by NL207 on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 8:29pm.

Why do we want a power hungry elite to misuse government authority to steal the private poroperty of 2% of our population in oder to bribe 51% of the population for their political support?
