When NewsBusters posted the screencap shown here as its Weekend Captionfest on Friday, the result was an outpouring of affectionate reader responses. Typical was this one, from "iveseenitall":
The ladies in my house instantly fell for this kid. "Oh" and "Oooh" and "Ah". The giggles, the pointing at the t.v. Love all around that night.
The MSM lives in a different house. Check out this candid observation by New York Times media reporter David Carr in his article in today's NYT [emphasis added]:
In the press galleries at the convention, journalists wrinkled their noses in disgust when Piper, Ms. Palin’s youngest daughter, was filmed kitty-licking her baby brother’s hair into place.
Story Continues Below Ad ↓
Perhaps better than anything, I'd say that illustrates the cultural gulf that separates the MSM from mostAmericans. It also helps explain why, to the shock and horror of the liberal media, the GOP ticket has taken the lead in this election. But of course the media still have almost two months to undo America's warm feelings for Palin.
Bonus Coverage: Carr Struggles to Deny NYT Bias
Carr was definitely in a candid mood. Check out the conclusion of the same article that contains the revelation about the press reaction to Piper. Carr was describing his conversation with a Republican convention delegate [emphasis added]:
Like a lot of delegates at the Xcel — and the woman whom they nominated as John McCain’s running mate — Ms. O’Hara was fired up by all the sudden energy, but a bit suspicious of those who were there to cover it.“Conservatives have a bad history with The New York Times,” she said, looking at my press ID, still smiling and still very friendly. “How can I be sure that you won’t take my words and twist them to suit some agenda that you already have?”
Her friends from Montana leaned in and enjoyed the spectacle as I stammered my way through a response. I’m working on an answer because I don’t think it is the last time that question is going to come up.

Family is out of bounds
September 7, 2008 - 22:01 ET by Kirk HallUnless your having a normal family moment, then it is a freak show.
Kitty Licking?
not normal? huh?
September 7, 2008 - 22:37 ET by wdhorningWhat is un-"normal" about a little girl showing love and affection for her little baby brother?
If family is out of bounds, how come Obama's family took the stage? How come you think Obama's family is "in-bounds" but not Sarah Palin's family?
Misunderstood?
September 7, 2008 - 23:09 ET by Kirk HallNothing, I was being sarcastic and thought it would be obvious.
I don't think that.
Obama's wife took the stage
September 7, 2008 - 23:21 ET by liberal_bug_zapperObama's wife took the stage in a political fashion, and she made political comments and statements. She's fair game. Obama's kids are not. Not one conservative voice of any note has said word one about Obama's kids. The left are not that nice or professional. To the leftists, anything is ok as long as they win.

There are rules
September 8, 2008 - 09:22 ET by ArcherBBoth families are out of bounds. The only way they can be considered even close to "in-bounds" is if they
1) are adult
2) actively campaign
Neither Obama's nor Palin's kids fit either description and so they are off limits. Michelle Obama and Cindy McCain are both fair game as they are both obviously adults and have given speeches campaigning for their husbands.

She's A Little Girl!
September 7, 2008 - 22:05 ET by GothampcThis shows what hatred comes from the liberal media. For heaven sakes, she's a little girl. She's imitating what mothers have done for ages. I guess the MSM would prefer that Ms. Palin had aborted this little girl and left her in a utility room to die.

September 7, 2008 - 22:09 ET by Mark FinkelsteinToday at the supermarket, a little girl, who couldn't have been more than 5, had picked up her younger sister and was holding her. Both had huge smiles. It warmed my heart. I immediately thought of Piper's gesture and wished I could have taken a photo.
The Innocence of A Child
September 7, 2008 - 22:27 ET by GothampcI live in NYC, and about a year ago, I saw a girl about 7 years old standing on the corner waving her hand for a taxi to stop. The little girl didn't see her mother was behind her also with her hand up. When the taxi stopped, the little girl was so excited. She said "I got us one." It's the innocence of children that is so sweet. Why liberals hate that, I don't understand. They seem to want to sexualize our children and turn them into adults before their time.
You are so right. It makes
September 7, 2008 - 22:57 ET by liberal_bug_zapperYou are so right. It makes you wonder how we as parents, even good parents can protect our children from the corruption when the public schools are doing everything in their power to corrupt the children. They have them for 8 hours a day, and then the TV has them for another 8 hours on average a week. Those are two reasons we will not allow cable TV in our home... movies we pick only, and it's also why my children will never go to public school unless I could be assured all Liberals have been fired. Bristol and her Boyfriend probably fought the lure as long as they could, but when it seems it's the world against you (this is a common tactic of the left), it begins to seem hopeless and you might as well give in. You know peer pressure is hell, and when teachers and administrators are saying "Well they're going to do it anyway" to justify teaching them how to do it rather than seeking kids out and punishing them.... then we have these problems. I'm even thinking all girl and all boy schools are not such a bad idea. As long as Liberals are not in those schools. We need to protect our children... Liberalism must be stamped out... or at least made taboo once again.

An additional comment on David Carr
September 7, 2008 - 22:46 ET by zachlindIn his article for the Times he says,
"Before Gov. Sarah Palin came flying in from the wilds of Alaska for the Republican convention in St. Paul, there was a lot of sniggering in media rooms and satellite trucks about her beauty queen looks and rustic hobbies, and the suggestion that she was better suited to be a calendar model for a local auto body shop than a holder of the second-highest office in the land."
I would suggest, given his (David Carr’s) past transgressions, he might be better suited for an Abercrombie & Fitch catalog pose rather than writing for the NYTimes.

I'm the oldest of four
September 7, 2008 - 22:18 ET by SumricaI'm the oldest of four kids. When I saw Piper do that, I thought of my Mom. At 58, it's a faint memory of her moistening a finger and working on the hair of a sibling.
Surely, it was on Fox News that I heard someone refer to that the vision of Piper grooming her brother's hair as a Norman Rockwell moment.
Sorry as*ed elitist media.
Norman Rockwell
September 7, 2008 - 22:37 ET by GothampcIt was indeed a Norman Rockwell moment. Wish we could see more of those.

September 7, 2008 - 22:20 ET by bigtimerI wondered how long it would take for someone in the msm of any venue to be stupid enough to make something ugly about something so lovingly natural.

September 7, 2008 - 22:24 ET by MearlineIt's not that they don't have children...it's just that they turn them over to others to raise and therefore they do not recognize or understand loving gestures of children.

Humanity
September 7, 2008 - 22:24 ET by Leon BrozynaThis strikes me as an excellent example of sibling bonding with Piper practicing her maternal skills. Looks like an image of youthful innocence practiced with intent seriousness {ever notice that the younger a child, the more intent they are in trying to comport themselves in an adult manner?}.
The only thing this episode illustrates is the desperate need that the MSM get in touch with their humanity {as well as that other small matter that's lacking - objectivity}.

September 7, 2008 - 22:50 ET by Dee Bunkand watch one of these idiots. They have gone so far over the deep end with their worship of Obama that they now pick on teenagers and pre-school kids. No words can express how disgusted I am with them.
Took a while
September 7, 2008 - 22:57 ET by HumblepieIt took me a while to really figure out what bothered me about this article from Carr. It came to me when I started to think back to my days as a youth (many, many moons ago) and the love and support given to me and my sisters by our family. Then it hit me. We were a family, not some live for the moment hypocrite that spends more time at work or fame than tending to the family. Our family came first and foremost. Yes there were times when my Dad had to work late or on a Saturday/holiday, but he always made time for us kids when he came home. Liberals view of kids are different. Do they really love and nurture them? Do they see them as token members with a payoff every April 15th? Do they really know how to love and support them? If they are so disgusted by Piper's action, in what light do they see their kids? Palin's kids prove that above all, the family is first and the loony left can't deal with it.
During this time with political correctness at its zenith, I reserve the right to let you know you're an idiot.
I couldn't agree more
September 7, 2008 - 23:11 ET by Amanda JusticeThis is such a loving gesture from a caring child to a sibling. Also, I dare any women out there to tell me they never ONCE in their lives have smoothed their own hair to put it back behind the ear...when they were younger, so they wouldn't have flying locks.
This expression of love and affection by Piper should never be viewed as disgusted or un-normal. It's as American as apple pie. And as loving as the American family. Piper loves her baby sibling, and she is grooming him as is normal for siblings who care for one another.
I could make a comment about Matthews grooming Olbermann, but I won't go there because THAT would gross me out.
I love the Palin family and all they represent as Americans. Typical, loving American families. My older sister used to do this to me all the time, so does this make me abnormal? I don't think so.
Sarah IS the real American Woman and the MSM are scared to death and do not know what to do.
Kitty-lickers of the world unite
September 7, 2008 - 23:13 ET by thebobboLeave it to the schmedia to take a natural, loving gesture from one child to another, and consider it an "ick" moment. Maybe they're all just germophobes. Republican germophobes.
But while I'm at it, a few more observations -
I can totally see Sarah Palin as a pin-up in an auto body shop calendar. And you know what? I like it.
"...a way of pronouncing media — “MEE-de-ah” — that made it sound like something legless and slithering." Yep. More like a worm than a snake as far as I'm concerned.
"...I’m working on an answer because I don’t think it is the last time that question is going to come up." Yeah again. You and the rest of your ilk whose words conservatives bitterly cling to on a daily basis had better hurry up and consolidate your defecation, Mr. Carr. I think a lot of people are quickly losing their proverbial grip.
Seacrest out.
Probably a bunch of metro-sexuals, whatever that is
September 7, 2008 - 23:28 ET by AndanteThe little girl's spontaneous act of licking her hand to fix the baby's hair reminded me of the love that motivates such a sweet moment. It reminded me of when I was a kid and my Mom would lick a hankee and wipe dirt off my face; I hated it then (you did too:-). Now I'm a father and I've done the same to my son. I understand.
Those journalists must live in a superficial, cold and lonely world.

Hijacking Childhood
September 8, 2008 - 00:24 ET by nofateMark, what a great find. My wife was a couple minutes late coming in to watch the speech and I told her as soon as she arrived that she had to watch "the little girl" (I didn't know her name at the time), that her radiant smile and her absolute natural manner just made you want to keep watching her. Now they are trying to make this out to be disgusting. Again, it's a case of them trying to make something out of nothing in order to advance their agenda.
The woman who was suspicious of Carr was entirely correct in being so. I would say her antennae were up, unlike many of our "conservative" representatives in Washington, who succumb to the need to pander to the liberal elites in the beltway. "I’m working on an answer because I don’t think it is the last time that question is going to come up." Duh! You work on a good answer, just as Barry works on his answere trying to fool us all into believing he is something he is not.
Commenter liberal_bug_zapper had it right: "It makes you wonder how we as parents, even good parents can protect our children from the corruption when the public schools are doing everything in their power to corrupt the children." Carr, Obama, and all the rest are just a part of the "long march through the institutions" that is an ongoing process, and getting hold of the minds of our children at as early an age as possible is an integral part of the process. Jon Voight has commented on this in several of his interviews and in an op-ed in the Washington Times. See here for more on this. Just an excerpt:
Note the popularity of Wikipedia (just for one example)- it comes up with nearly every search done, and courtesy of PT (I can't find the link to that post), it has been pointed out that it is loaded with extremely graphic descriptions and pictures of sexual images. There are schools that get away with this too, teachers tend to push the limits as far as they can in the name of free speech. Note the last line above: "everyone raised in the traditions of God, family, patriotism, gun ownership, or free markets is in need of psychological help". The National Association of School Psychologists wants to help:
Just what we need. More liberal, nutball shrinks trying to take over our children's minds. It reminds me of the scenes in "Miracle on 34th Street" when the Macy's shrink tries to pychoanalyze Santa Claus because dear old Santa whacked him over the head with an umbrella for trying to ruin a young man's life with his shrink psychobabble.
I am not a huge McLame fan, but he is a good, courageous and honorable man, I just think he is wrong on some of his policies and is too (almost) eager to cross the aisle and "work with" our liberal "friends". But I am a huge Sarah Palin fan. She is the real deal, you could see it in her eyes, her demeanor, her speech and the way she has lived her life and raised those children. My biggest fear for her is that when they do get to Washington, they are going to run smack into the wall that has been erected in the form of the liberal bureaucracy. The long march has succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, and though they seem not to be able to grab the last vestiges of power, i.e. the presidency and it's power to appoint judges, unless someone like Reagan/Palin/Jindall eventually gets in along with a sympathetic majority in congress, we will lose and most will not even know it.

That was the briefest of camera shots, too...
September 8, 2008 - 07:40 ET by kathleenirishLord, Help Us!
When I was watching Palin's speech and the camera went over to her daughter holding Trig and trying to fix his hair up with her palm, I sprung up a bit in my seat, but before I could finish giggling, "How cute!", the camera had already panned away- did anyone else notice how quickly that happened? or was it just the network I was watching- (usually I watch FOX but who knows at that moment)? I think the abruptness of the pan away was deliberate- like they knew it was sooo good that they had to jump away as to stop the positive effect they instinctively knew was going to be generated by such a sweet, loving and totally precious sight. That helps Palin, and NO WAY we're going to do that!!!!

Women Chiming In
September 8, 2008 - 09:55 ET by nofateI've noticed (just on my own, no actual count) that there seems to be a few more women commenting on the absolute electricity of the Palin nomination and the joy that watching her and her family gave us. The attempt to destroy her and her family is also firing up the base. She has truly touched a chord in the hearts of many of America's women- watching that innocent little girl having so much fun and pasting down her brother's hair. Watching McCain greet her 17 year old daughter and her fiance. That is another chord that touches many women, the unplanned pregnancy aspect of this. Hugh Hewitt has a whole show taking calls from women only and as a man it was a really uplifting experience to hear all the support for a real woman. Many of the callers either experienced or knew friends or family who had been through what the Palins are going through now with the unplanned pregnancy. If you have podcasting ability, go here and download Hewitt's show, day 3 of the Republican convention. It is a setup page for Townhall.com podcasts, but is worth the effort if you are interested in the women's perspective on this- everyday working women/moms, not politicos and pundits.

Media Disgust over Disabled People
September 8, 2008 - 10:26 ET by deerjerkydaveThey wrinkled their noses in part because the baby has a disability. In their liberal utopia disabled people are gross, unclean, and unworthy to partake. In their sick minds, that baby should have been aborted to preserve the master race. I only partially jest.
