Mitchell Also Circulated Obama's Conspiracy Theory Over Cancelled Troop Visit

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Andrea Mitchell's floating of the Obama-camp accusation that John McCain cheated by overhearing Obama's responses at the Saddleback forum, as NewsBuster D.S. Hube reported, isn't the first time the NBC correspondent has made herself propagator-in-chief of Obama's conspiracy theories.  As NewsBuster Noel Sheppard has noted, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis has now written NBC to protest Mitchell's behavior.  Here's an excerpt from his letter to NBC News president Steve Capus [emphasis added]:

[I]nstead of taking a critical journalistic approach to this spin, Andrea Mitchell did what has become a pattern for her of simply repeating Obama campaign talking points.

In asserting a "pattern" of such behavior by Mitchell, what did Davis have in mind?  Almost surely it included a very similar stunt that Mitchell pulled in connection with Obama's cancellation of his planned visit to injured troops while in Germany for his speech in Berlin.  As I noted here at the time, Mitchell passed along the Obama camp's unsubstantiated conspiracy theory that McCain had pulled strings with Pentagon buddies to have them withdraw permission for the visit.

Said Mitchell on Morning Joe on July 25th:

Clearly, people in the campaign are really angry . . .  So, you know, the anger here in the campaign is pretty intense at the Pentagon. They feel that the military are drawing some lines--they're not saying this publicly of course--but drawing lines that they might have drawn for other people . . . They thought that they were, you know, you know, no-win situation, that the Pentagon, perhaps the military with cooperation from some Republican operatives and, that's the sort of scuttlebutt, that there have been some foreign policy advisers of John McCain with connections in the Pentagon who had something to do with this. But that is, perhaps, just the normal political paranoia of the season.

In fact, the Pentagon had done no such thing. As the Obama camp itself subsequently acknowledged, the invitation to visit the troops had remained on the table.  Obama decided not to go, according to Obama aide Robert Gibbs "out of respect for these servicemen and women" because "it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”  Did Mitchell subsequently clarify the record, to let people know that the Obama camp's accusation was crackpot conspiracy theory if not an outright lie? Not that I'm aware of.

At the time, I wrote: "Are reporters in the business of reporting fact or rumor?  Andrea Mitchell, for one, doesn't scruple to circulate "scuttlebutt" that if true would be deeply damaging to John McCain."

Along similar lines, Davis observed to Capus: "Instead of examining the Obama campaign's spin for truth before reporting it to more than 3 million NBC News viewers, Andrea Mitchell simply passed along Obama campaign conspiracy theories."

If Andrea Mitchell is going to serve as an Obama spokesman, perhaps she should take a leave of absence for the duration of the campaign.  Otherwise, she'd be well-advised to begin investigating Obama's allegations rather than uncritically parroting them.

Between that and this her

Between that and this her most recent parroting of the campaign's accusations regarding the Saddleback forum, it sounds like
Mitchell is becoming a PR flack for Obama, passing on their talking points. If she wants to do that, she
needs to quit her day job like the other journalist did.

Disclosure: I removed part of this post after viewing the video, because I discovered I was mistaken about something.

Mark, I'm so glad you posted

Mark, I'm so glad you posted this! I was just about to bring it up on the other thread. When I heard Andrea repeating that completely unsubstantiated rumor about Saddleback, I immediately thought of the similar treatment by Mitchell of another Obama accusation concerning the Pentagon and the infamous troop snub. She actually called it scuttlebut. You know, because it's her job to spread rumors, right? She repeated it later, btw, and this time she dropped the scuttlebut part and simply reported it as fact.

And she really needs to

And she really needs to quit using the word "clearly."

The scary thing is that she is their "Chief Correspondent." Isn't that a Department Head?

Andrea Mitchell is auditioning for the job of Press Secretary under President Obama.

It's a shame...

Mitchell's husband, former Fed chief Alan Greenspan was in the position of steward for the monitary policies of the United States. If he executed his duties as recklessly as his wife, there would be a wake of destruction in his path.

However, NBC news still has ratings...until people switch their dials, NBC will continue to peddle their own form of journalism.

He did and there is...

Look at the over 3 Trillion national debt and you'll see that Greenspan is not completely blameless in it. The entire structure of the US currency system has been standing "on it's ear" ever since the inception of the Federal Reserve. The US, a soverign country, can't even issue it's own currency without having to float bonds to the FED and thus pay interest on the amount issued.

Why waste time on wounded

Why waste time on wounded heroes?  The comment about a stop being "inappropriate" doesn't justify the skipped visit.  It shows that this guy is never off and probably never honest about his true beliefs, as he is always campaigning for some target audience.  Does anyone really believe that the military would reject the request of a guy who may be the future CinC?  They might request that he not drag a bunch of reporters and cameras into a sick room.  Why go, if no one is going to see it?  The MSM allows him to put on a facade to fit the ocassion.

Obama decided not to go, according to Obama aide Robert Gibbs "out of respect for these servicemen and women" because "it would be inappropriate to make a stop to visit troops at a U.S. military facility as part of a trip funded by the campaign.”

"An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last."  - Sir Winston Churchill

Hunter, I said pretty much

Hunter, I said pretty much the same thing above, then I edited it after I watched the video.

Whether it is true I can't say, but in the video of the original story re the wounded, Mitchell explains when he visited troops in Iraq it was a "congressional" visit, they were accompanied by congresssional staff, whereas as in Germany, he was accompanied by his campaign staff, which makes it a "campaign" visit and not allowed. If that's true, then it would be wrong to accuse him of not going because the cameras couldn't go with him.

However, Obama's campaign didn't decide against the visit because they deemed it "inappropriate," they were told "no" by the Pentagon because it was a campaign trip.

Also, Obama's campaign has NO evidence that McCain pulled any strings or had anything to do with it.

But in typical liberal overkill, they tried to spin it both ways: that he deferred out of respect, and that it was McCain who pulled strings and nixed the deal.

Journalism

I have nothing against reporters listening to campaign talking points. But you have to investigate them before you air them publicly. And you can't fall back on the excuse "I'm only reporting what they're saying" because their saying it doesn't make it newsworthy. Besides, campaign aides say a lot of things, not all of them flattering to the candidate or supposed allies, that reporters hear but keep to themselves. That shows that reporters are exercising judgment, and if they're exercising judgment on that, why can't they exercise judgment on the rumors?

That's just lazy journalism. You can't report an accusation without investigating it.

Andrea had no problem

Andrea had no problem exercising judgement to not report on the adulterer John Edwards despite knowledge of this rumor for months.  I wonder how far her intellect prodded her to investigate into that persistent and evolving story?

Mitchell has an amazing journalistic integrity.  Amazingly Pravda-like, that is.

Thanks for reminding us of this Mark - Andrea is

shameless. I'm sure there are more examples out there.

At least in this case of outregous rumor spreading, Mitchell did put the qualification " But that is, perhaps, just the normal political paranoia of the season."
In the McCain cheated claim she didn't put any qualification which is even more outrageous. Of course her little qualification in this example is woefully inadequate. If she is going to report such "rumors" she should state clearly and unequivocally that there is no proof and that the political campaign is desperate to shift blame.

I really do think it's part of the liberal psyche to be paranoid. Does anyone remember, after the liberals dismay at the capture of Saddam, Madeline Albright thought that We had Osama Bin Laden Captured and were going to reveal it in an October surprise?

If things don't go the liberals way it's always answered with unsubstantiated claims of tricks and lies or racism and hating of poor people. They are a party of demonization. In their minds, only evil people disagree with them.

Andrea Mitchell's Husband to Blame for Sub Prime Loan Mess

Who else is more to blame for the sub prime loan fiasco than Andrea Mitchell's hubby?

Well, pearl

I'd start with Congress declaring good lending practices were racist, thus forcing lending institutions to be more creative in qualifying poor people for middle income loans.

I'd then look at those who took out more loan than they could afford, knowing that since they'd put "nothing down" they were essentially renting and could walk away if things got tough.

Then I'd look at Greenspan.

I'm with you on this one,

I'm with you on this one, CA. The 'ol "homeownership for everyone" slogan is definitely coming back to bite us.

There is obviously plenty of blame to spread around on this issue, but the Fannie & Freddie debacle reeks of government malfeasance.  They served as the enabler for all these banks to unload worthless loans to the full faith and credit of the U.S. taxpayers.  Banks are all about risk management.  But if you have Uncle Sam co-signing on a $200,000 loan for a man making $30,000 with a 500 credit score, then you know things will eventually implode.

The system kind of reminds of the show "Intervention," where the mom cries every night her son goes on a bender, and yet slips him a twenty when he begs for more the next day.

But maybe he has a point.  This game show format was much too vulnerable to conspiracy theories.  Maybe if there were a format where both candidates sat together on the same stage at the same time and fielded random questions in some kind of venue, I don't know, similar to a town hall, maybe we could dispose of this rhetoric once and for all.

I feel I must accept the majority of blame on goldbar since I actually acknowledged his existence in the first place.  However, his sole purpose - distracting people from the utter arse whipping Obama took at the Evangelical Forum - is quite transparent and ineffective.  The liberal slight of hand tactic may work on some, but Obama’s addiction to dualism will only make him stutter more in these debates as he tries to remember what he said last.

It’s funny.  This was Obama’s first “pre-season” game before the big boy debates and he is already crying foul.  You would think his people would have slipped in some “what if” questions in between Mai Tais while on vacation.  Is it any wonder why he avoided McCain’s proposal of 10 town hall events?

BT, it's obvious indifference is the best strategy for these trolls.  But the one thing they are looking for is to get a rise out of someone with their drive-by rhetoric.  That way they can go back to their liberal lairs and say "Look what I started over at ___."  If I do address them directly, I try to brush them off with a light comment, much like their parents do at home.

Fair enough, mulerider

We all do our best here to ignore the trolls, however they frequently post such c**p that we seriously can't let it go unanswered, lest the uninitiated here (i.e. new readers) believe we agree with the trollish absurdities.

Your comparison to parenting the trolls is apt.  Since I have no children, I prefer the more direct approach.  Stuff them back in their holes with no remorse.

Stuck up journalists don't know much about conspircacy theories

In my opninion Mitchell is a classic example of why stuck up journalists shouldn't mess around with conspiracy theories.  I don't think any of them have graduated from Conspircacy Theories 101.  Smart people who have graduated from this class know how conspiracies go down, and here's how this one did the other night.  The original McCain that was supposed to be in the Cone room was in fact a doppelganger.  Badge Man was waiting on the grassy knoll of the church lawn and was getting all the questions in advance.  He then sent them via a secret satellite to Area 51 where space aliens were waiting to put the correct answers down.  They then sent the correct answers to Jack Ruby at Roswell who flew a UFO to Warren's debate and gave the answers to the real McCain, who then switched placed with the doppelganger.

So, it's the simplicity of

So, it's the simplicity of it all that keeps the conspiracy from being detected!

and the beauty of a true

and the beauty of a true conspiracy is that if it's successful, no one knows that it was perpetrated!

So, Andrea having no proof of a conspiracy actually proves that there was one!

Now I get it!!
