Chris Matthews: Back With an Obamania Vengeance . . .
If Barack Obama makes it to the White House, perhaps he should appoint Chris Matthews Commissar of Gosplan, the Commission charged with developing the economy's Five Year Plans. The Hardball host, back from vacation, displayed the enthusiasm of a dutiful apparatchik in praising an Obama ad that in turn amounted to a pitch for central planning.
During the "ad wars" segment on this evening's Hardball, Matthews first played a McCain ad that hit Obama over his plans to raise taxes and his lack of readiness to lead. After Andrea Mitchell suggested that the ad is "the wrong tone for the [NBC] Olympics," during which it's playing, Matthews wondered whether McCain is "the Grinch that stole the Olympics," and suggested a "taste test," comparing Obama's ad. Here's the ad's text:
VOICEOVER: The hands that built this nation can build a new economy. The hands that harvest crops can also harvest the wind [images of electricity-generating wind turbines.] The hands that install roofs can also install solar panels. The hands that build today's cars can also build the next generation of fuel-efficient vehicles. Barack Obama: a new vision for our economy. Fast-track alternative fuels. Create five million jobs developing home-grown energy technologies. Because America's future is in our hands.
View video here.
CHRIS MATTHEWS: That's not only cheerful: it's downright windswept. [Laughs heartily.] That ad should be called "Kelly" [someone explain the reference to me, please.]
Andrea Mitchell agreed.
ANDREA MITCHELL: It may be over-promising, but it's upbeat.
Cheerful? Upbeat? I find the ad threatening and sinister as hell. "A new vision for our economy"? Thanks, but I like the old vision. You know, the one based on capitalism and free markets in which millions of consumers, through billions of transactions, decide what goods and services are provided and what price they're willing to pay. "America's future is in our hands"? Translation: in big government's hands. What could be less cheerful than that? But Matthews and Mitchell dug it.
All hail the inevitable triumph of the centrally planned economy!

August 11, 2008 - 20:02 ET by balboaIsn't that a little overly suspicious? I never understood this worry that Obama will get elected and then suddenly change the basic nature of America, and searching for hints of this sinister future in his commercials and statements, as if he'd be sloppy enough to hint about these dastardly plans ahead of time, like some James Bond villain.

August 11, 2008 - 22:12 ET by robert108By raising taxes, especially taxes on capital, govt assumes more and more power over the economy, simply through redistribution. You may think you have economic freedom, but if the govt is taking over half your earnings, then redistributing them achieve its social engineering goals, how much economic freedom do you really have? In essence, the recipients of govt largesse have more economic power than you do to buy goods and services, and you are paying for them to have that power.
When the govt taxes capital, it reduces the capital available to the private sector, which decreases our economic freedom. Keep in mind that the govt never "invests"; it only spends.

Obama and change
August 12, 2008 - 00:42 ET by KC MulvilleWhen Obama patiently explains to us how the hands that made X can make Y, he apparently thinks we don't already know that. But we already know that America can make progress. We already have a core conviction that America is the best engine for progress that the world has ever seen. But our system of creating progress is chaotic, capitalistic, occasionally destructive, and it never happens on schedule. People get hurt. With all his airy inspiration, Obama projects that we can solve all problems without anyone getting hurt. Ain't gonna happen.
Here's what I mean. The reason why we haven't invented the carbon-clean, fuel-efficient cars isn't because we're just oil-addicted sluggards that need his inspiration. An economically-feasible technology just isn't there yet. The trick is how to get there.
Obama will be irrelevant to that success, but he could prolong things. That's why this "change" motto is nonsense. We are changing. Obama doesn't seem to understand that.
The Free Market Should Determine US Energy Policy
August 12, 2008 - 06:50 ET by PopularTechObama is a socialist who wants government to solve the problem ala Carter in the '70s. This has been proven not to work. It is the the nationalization of hydrocarbon reserves by governments, increased government regulation and taxation, increased environmental regulation and government subsidies that has caused this problem. The government can solve this problem by getting out of the market and letting the market go to work to solve this problem. There are huge market driven incentives to supply us with energy at the type and price we want not what Obama and his socialist central planners "feel" we should be using.

Obama the Socialist?
August 12, 2008 - 08:30 ET by allanfI think there is ample evidence that Obama has leanings that can be characterized as socialist. Let's look at Obama's silly and counterproductive plan to tax the oil companies and redistribute the spoils to the "poor".
It is a great idea for further depressing domestic oil production. He will also encourage oil companies to ship their non domestic oil production away from the United States under foreign flag. His tax will be an incentive for oil companies not to undertake capital intensive projects in the United States. Right now Exxon Mobile produces about 4.9 million barrels of oil per day. They have no new exploration projects in the United States. Saudi Arabia produces 10 million barrels of oil. If Obama wants to increase our dependency on foreign producers of oil, he has hit upon a great scheme.
Sorry Barack, people don’t work for nothing. Exxon Mobil paid 32.361 billion in taxes this quarter (although 9.5 billion of that were sales taxes). Notice that this socialist is not promising to use any of that 32.361 billion for rebates. Over the past 25 years oil companies have paid over 2.2 trillion in taxes.
If Obama wants to create a two price market, his best bet is to increase domestic supply of oil. Revenue from new exploration on government land goes into state and federal coffers – similar to state owned systems in Saudi Arabia and elsewhere. Absent that approach oil will flow to the highest bidder. http://www.taxfoundation.org/publications/show/1168.html

August 11, 2008 - 20:20 ET by ConservativeRexDoes anyone else see a distinct pattern here? These fascist/progressives insist that they always have a better way. No matter what it is. And usually for them it's the state taking control of whatever the problem is. Central planning...where have we heard that before??? Any guesses?
Well, we first heard it from the Progressives hero Woodrow Wilson, although today's progressives might not be aware of it. Then we heard it next from someone who worshipped Wilson..Mussolini. And then right down the line, FDR, Hitler, Lenin, Mao, Castro(s) . The progressives have always had a fixation with strong men who take control of things. I reckon they feel comfortable in the arms of government.
So, it appears we go back to central planning, Obami style. It's not new...in fact it's over 100 years old. We'll survive this too.

August 11, 2008 - 21:47 ET by sugarandsassYou're right. We already do have central planning. It's called "homeowner's associations". It's amazing that here in America we have people that we pay money to tell us how to live our lives in our own homes, and then fine us more money if our basketball standard is too high or our kids' swing set can be seen over the fence. Don't forget about leaving your trash out too long after the truck has been by. Obama seems like he would run the country like an HOA president - too much time on his hands and too much power gone to his head.

In fact I can't recall a single example of McCain claiming to have the worst solution to the nation's challenges. So, if after a little digging around, I find that McCain also flies around "insisting that he has a better way," am I to conclude that he too is a little Lenin in disguise?
that's avoiding the real point
August 11, 2008 - 22:40 ET by candanceThe point is not that Obama asserts his ideas are better than McCain's or Bush's or anyone in particular. He claims that his ideas are better than the systems we have in place now.

really

Speech he gave July 2:
http://wnd.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=69960
Change addressed:
-funding a national brigade of civilian police to patrol neighborhoods.
-forcing children to perform community service.
-tying financial aid to community service for college students.
-using government power to "leverage" the capital of private investors.
Sounds like a lot more than getting out of Iraq and raising taxes.
Very good points
August 11, 2008 - 23:24 ET by ConservativeRexVery good points candance..can anyone come up with another progressive leader who had his "neighborhood brigades" to keep the peace...and round up "troublemakers" of a certain Semitic persuasion?
....forcing children to perform community service..sounds awfully like a certain progressive leader that had children of his country forgo their own parents so their allegiance could be to him...
....maybe there was a certain progressive leader who insisted on using one company to rat on other companies so they could show to be more "nationalistic", after all, it's for the good of the country, right?
Who was this "progressive" leader? Anyone...anyone???

Besides, I have a confession; being one who is very much in favor of the ultimate economical and well thought out timely development of alternative energy sources, I have this problem with wind: Not in my back yard - don't you dare!
When I drive past the Palm Springs area or into San Francisco (from the south) and see these vast vistas of wind turbines -- well, it's almost enough to make me sick. It is absolutly revolting; the most upsetting visually disturbing scene of environmental damage I occassionally witness. I'd much rather drive past one simple nuclear power plant sitting on it's tiny footprint generating many times the energy of those vast corporate wind farms. There.

August 11, 2008 - 20:44 ET by candanceOkay first of all, the Olympics is not a friggin Thanksgiving family get-together. We can't put politics on hold this close to an election just because a bunch of athletes are competing in China.
And secondly, I saw Obama run some negative stuff about McCain but not a peep from the MSM about them being negative.

Create? Or mandate?
August 11, 2008 - 21:18 ET by CobraMan"Create five million jobs developing home-grown energy technologies"
Create? Develop? What? You mean Mandate, don't you?
Someone needs to remind Obama and his supporters that these technologies already exist! If people want solar cells installed on their roofs, there's nothing preventing it. If people want to put wind turbine generators on their farms, there's nothing preventing it. If people want to drive 'green" cars, there's nothing preventing it. The only problems for Obama is that most people don’t want the added expenses and the time-consuming maintenance requirements those technologies require. So, instead of "creating" the jobs that these technologies employ, and “developing“ existing technology as they claim, Obama will only MANDATE their use. In other words, he'll have to force us all to "chose" to use them.
I don't know about the rest of you, but I think that forcing people to use something they don't want is a terrible vision for a presidential candidate.

"The hands that install roofs can also install solar panels." And, again, only with massive government subsidies paid for by you the taxpayer.
"The hands that build today's cars can also build the next generation of fuel-efficient vehicles." Yes, but the hybrid car uses massive amount of "carbon credits" to build and will clog our land fills with massive amounts of lead and other posionous metals and chemicals in just a few short years. Oh, and your local, state, and federal taxing authorities have yet to determine how much the reclamation fee$ will be when that battery falls out the back end of your hybrid car in about three years.
Hey, other than that, it is sound plan!
<dismay; barf>
Obama want's to be the Chairman, not the President.
August 12, 2008 - 07:55 ET by c5thenHe wants to direct where the jobs will be. He wants to mandate which fuel sources are 'developed' and which are not. He wants to control the economy to make it do his bidding. In short he wants to replace our existing economy with a Soviet style directed economy that has proven itself to work so well (sarcasm off).
Obama, and the wing of the Democratic party that he represents, are probably the greates threat to the well being of the USA than any other at this time, and maybe in history.

When he started the bluster about MeCain being the grinch who stole the olympics, I knew Matthews was crazed, bonkers, unhinged, wacky - pick any word.

I too turned it on to see if Matthews had come to his senses during his vacation, but he was just a bigger nutcase than before yesterday. I had to turn it to Fox and fast.
