Morning Joe: Did Axelrod 'Lie' In Denying Michelle Makeover?

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

It's rare to hear an MSM figure flatly suggest that a presidential campaign lied, but Joe Scarborough broke out the the l-word today in wondering whether chief Obama strategist David Axelrod did just that when he emphatically denied, on yesterday's show, that there is a concerted "makeover" of Michelle Obama in the works.

View video here.

An article in yesterday's New York Times, After Attacks, Michelle Obama Looks for a New Introduction, claimed that just such a makeover was planned:

Now her husband’s presidential campaign is giving her image a subtle makeover, with a new speech in the works to emphasize her humble roots and a tough new chief of staff. On Wednesday, Mrs. Obama will do a guest turn on “The View,” the daytime talk show on ABC, with an eye toward softening her reputation.

When Axelrod appeared on Morning Joe yesterday at 7:40 AM EDT, Scarborough quizzed him about the matter [dialogue as per closed-caption transcript].  The senior Obama aide's denial of a makeover plan couldn't have been more categorical:

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

JOE SCARBOROUGH:  Okay. Let's talk about Michelle Obama. Big spread in the New York Times. Why does she need an image makeover?

DAVID AXELROD: I saw that line. I don't know exactly what they're talking about. I don't think that she does. I think that Michelle -- I have talked to you about this before. She's one of the finest people I've ever known. She's the great American story. Her father was a laborer who worked and saved she could go to college. She worked her way up and got to Princeton and Harvard law and came back and worked in the community [Ed.: at over $300,000/year]. She's just a lovely person. Great mom.

SCARBOROUGH: That's what the times said you were going say. You were going to emphasize her humble upbringing and she worked so hard to get where she's gotten but you say --

AXELROD: That's not even news. We've been talking about that from the beginning.

SCARBOROUGH: I'm just saying that's what the Times said you would focus on going forward. My question is whether the story is correct or not.

AXELROD: I absolutely reject the notion of any kind of makeover. Absolutely not. I don't know where they got that from. None necessary.

SCARBOROUGH:  All right. Well, that's why we have you on, David Axelrod. Great to know. Thanks for being with us.

But when Mrs. Obama went on yesterday's View and—sure enough—emphasized her humble roots just as the Times had foretold, Scarborough smelled a rat, and raised the issue this morning.  Even the usually controversy-averse Willie Geist expressed skepticism about Axelrod's denial.

JOE SCARBOROUGH: You know, Pat, it's interesting, yesterday Axelrod, David Axelrod, came on this show, and he denied any knowledge of a Michelle Obama makeover, and yet he delivered the talking points that the New York Times said the campaign is going to be delivering.  We played a clip earlier this morning of Michelle Obama delivering [on The View] the talking points they said she was going to be delivering.

Is there a plan, or is there not a plan? Did David Axelrod lie to us yesterday?

PAT BUCHANAN: My guess is Joe they realize there's a problem here.  That's why they're making changes.

. . . .

JOE SCARBOROUGH: You know, Willie, yesterday we were talking about the "wife wars," about Michelle Obama, and we had David Axelrod on denying that this makeover was taking place. But as you know, yesterday, as we were all scurrying around Washington [for events in memory of Tim Russert], and you had put on your robe, eaten your bon-bons, slippers, watching The View, Michelle Obama did exactly what the New York Times said she was going to do, and what Axelrod did, and that is, talk about her upbringing. That she's a regular person, that she's not any left-wing radical.

WILLIE GEIST: Yeah, clearly there's something at work here.  There's some sort of plan, regardless of what David Axelrod wants us to believe.

Strong words from the normally mild-mannered Geist.

Will the MSM take note of what seems to be a pattern of duplicity emerging from the Obama campaign?   As we have noted here and here, this is not the first time a senior Obama aide looked into the camera and winged a whopper. On June 1st, Communications Director Robert Gibbs actually claimed that Obama's withdrawal-under-fire from Rev. Wright's church was "not a political decision."  Just five days later, the same Gibbs had the chutzpah to say that "it wasn't an attempt to deceive in any way," when the campaign . . . deceived the press corps covering Obama to fly to Chicago so the candidate could remain behind in DC to meet with Hillary outside the glare of media attention. Then just yesterday, when pressed to admit that the Iraqi government opposes Obama's withdrawal plan, Obama foreign policy advisor Susan Rice conveniently claimed to be unaware of the details of a conversation on the matter between the candidate and the Iraqi foreign minister.

Now comes Axelrod's tangle with the truth.   Is this the "new kind of politics" of which Obama so lovingly likes to speak?  If a Republican were engaging in it, you could expect the MSM to say it smacks of the old politics of one . . . Richard Nixon.

White guilt sure does have a long half-life.

Does that mean...

...I can list as a positive attribute, "descendant of Irish immigrants who left their homeland because of the potato famine"?

There's some sort of plan,

There's some sort of plan, regardless of what David Axelrod wants us to believe.

Of course there's a plan.

Prime example: "The View" (Transcript from michellemalkin.com)

Whoopi (furrowed brow, concerned tone): How do you deal with all the negativity?

Michelle: It’s hard. It’s hard. But I’m so proud. Proud of how I–we, Barack and I, and our children–have handled the stress. We’ve made sacrifices. But this is not about me–us. This is about the souls of America. I am a patriot. I love this country.

And then again:

“I am proud of my country, without a doubt.” (emphasis added)

Later:

Sherri: “You look gorgeous!”

Michelle: “It’s fun to look pretty!” (emphasis in original)

<barf>

Just a regular Mom, proud of her country (x2).... likes to look "pretty."

and that Us cover: Why Barack Loves Her ?????

Get the hip waders out, folks; it's gonna get deep!

Of course he lied. Even

Of course he lied. Even MSNBC ran a story on the new and improved Michelle Obama. She is re-inventing herself with a full staff of professionals.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

Speaking of Obama

The politics of change are looking more like politics as usual! There is a story on AOL about the Obama campaign deliberately excluding some American Muslim female supporters from sitting behind him at a rally in Detroit the other day. It seems that the women were excluded for wearing the hijab because the staff of "The Great Uniter" did not want to have them behind him in this particular political climate. Even the women involved felt the hollowness of Obama's racial reconciliation speech, noting that they had been discriminated against by the Obama campaign about an hour before. I wonder if any members of the MSM will not the rank hypocrisy of Obama here? Nah, not their "Secular Messiah"!

"Television is a freak show" Bernie Goldberg

The Obama campaign is all about deceit and trickery

Everything is about projecting an image that is no where near the truth. The lies are bolded

1.) Obama claims to be a moderate despite never having veered from the far left on any position

2.) Obama claims to be a uniter who is above partisan attacks despite making sleazy underhanded digs at McCain (like saying he didn't know the difference between Shia and Sunni). He complains of McCain using the same old politics of fear for taking issue with his policy decisions, yet doesn't complain about a moveon add that uses a baby for the sole purpose of fear mongering. The add is based on pure emotion and not examining policy differences. McCain points to legitimate policy differences and doesn't say that he wants to kill babies.

3.) Obama claims to be Religious yet makes comments like "clinging to guns and Religion" even though the majority he refers to go to church to worship God, not politics like he did. He clung to "God Damn America". They clung to the same thing they do no matter who is in office or what the political condition is. God.

4.) He claims to have a new open and transparent style while tricking reporters about his where abouts two times in a couple of days after he got the nomination (He lied about going home to Chicago to meet with Hillary and then once in Chicago went off to a Secret meeting with religious leaders in Chicago). He acts like a rock star who deserves his privacy, not an elected person who owes transparency. His secrecy was heightened after the power of becoming a nominee, I can only imagine how secretive he'll be with the power of the Presidency.

5.) He says he's going to Change politics as usual in Washington despite being part of even sleazier Chicago politics that cover-up widespread police brutality, participate in election fraud, and pretty much operates like a Crime family supporting known criminals like Ayers and Rezko.

6.) He says John McCain should strongly disavow all comments against Michelle because he would if they happened against Cindy. He claims spouses are off limits but he didn't disavow comments against Clinton who involved himself the same way Michelle did. Cindy isn't criticized because she doesn't put herself in the fray. If she did there would be comments against her. He's now making a decision to try and take Michelle out of the fray and being secretive and lying about it.

There's more deciet and trickery but I could go on forever.

NYT article on Obama's efforts to 'control his image'

Great article in NYT on the stuff the Obama camp is doing to protect him from political "attacks" (i.e.,criticism).

http://tinyurl.com/57v6z9

Example: Barring photographers from a meeting he had with a group of black civic leaders. Read the explanation the Obama handlers gave for not allowing cameras in the meeting. Absolutley hysterical.

Mr. Hope and Change is the biggest phony in American politics.

krendler - I'm glad the NYT mentioned the Secret Chicago

meeting with religious leaders. This was covered in the Chicago news but I had not known of it being covered elsewhere. This doesn't make a big deal of it and puts it well into the article but at least it mentions it.

As I said in my post above, Obama is all about image really. None of what he projects (through the willing press) is anywhere near the true picture of him.

This was a good article. Surprising from the NYT. I said pretty much the same thing in some of my comments above. They were a little more understanding about his deceit though. He's changing his tune about being transparent and open now that he's a nominee and it will only get much worse when he's President.

He's acting this way despite and adoring press and yet he criticizes Bush who has a press that hates him.<

Editor's Note

I saw the mention of Michelle Obama's salary. Awhile ago, I downloaded their tax returns back to 2000. But just going back six years to 2002, here you go:

2007—$103,633 (Univ of Chicago Hospital salary); $29,443 (Treehouse Foods director’s fees)

2006—$273,618 (Univ of Chicago Hospital salary); $51,200 (Treehouse Food director’s fees)

2005—$316,962 (Univ of Chicago Hospital salary); $45,000 (combined director’s fees)

2004—$121,910 (Univ of Chicago Hospital salary)

2003—$115,889 (Univ of Chicago Hospital salary)

2002—$98,826 (Univ of Chicago Hospital salary)

Axelrod said that she "worked in the community," and I'm not sure what they mean. I recently read in The American Spectator that the Obamas used to drive about 30 minutes from their Hyde Park home to Wright's church, so they didn't exactly live in "the community" of Wright's church. I don't know where Michelle's employer is located in relation to their home, but it's not as if she was working at some inner-city health clinic.

Two other things to note. First, she got a nice raise for 2005, and (surprise) Obama earmarked $1M back to the hospital in 2006. Second, it's interesting how she became a director of some local corporation (I think it's a sub of Wal-Mart) the year after BO is elected to the U.S. Senate.

What a lousy country.

Public Allies

S-O: Axelrod said that she "worked in the community," and I'm not sure what they mean.

Axelrod is probably referring to the 2-1/2 years (spring '93 - fall '96) where she was the Executive Director of Public Allies, a non-profit organization.

A government that robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul.
- George Bernard Shaw, 1944

"Worked in the community"...

...or "Worked over the community"?

This is Chicago we're talking about afterall.

I see a familiar theme emerging here

David Axelrod denies any knowledge of a plan to makeover Mrs. Obama.

Like Obama denies any knowledge of anything anti American or racist said by Rev. Wright

Agin denies knowledge about the past of all the others he has had to throw under the bus

Like Susan Rice ,Obama's senior foreign policy advisor , denied knowledge of facts

concerning the phone call between Obama and the Iraqi Foreign Minister

Seems like a whole lot of stuff they are Clueless about.

Given how empty Obama's

Given how empty Obama's suit is, and statements like his comment about 57 states and honoring fallen heroes -- "I see some here in the audience", any time I hear Obama deny knowledge of anything, I'll believe him.
