Mika Brzezinski realizes that the latest looniness emanating from Barack Obama's church poses political problems for the presidential candidate. But as a person of pallor, the ever-so-PC Morning Joe-er doesn't want to judge a black church—even when the most recent rantings come from the mouth of . . . a white preacher.
Morning Joe opened today with a clip of Father Michael Pfleger guest-preaching this past Sunday at Obama's Trinity United Church of Christ. Pfleger, a fixture on the radical Chicago scene whose endorsement of Obama [h/t Michelle Malkin] until recently appeared on the official Obama campaign website, mocked Hillary Clinton's New Hampshire tears as a sign of her frustrated sense of white entitlement. The screencap shows Pfleger making like Hillary wiping away those tears.
(Watch video above, context included, fast-forward to 3:40 for Brzezinski's humorous comment.)
But while acknowledging the headache Pfleger poses for Obama, Mika was oh-so-loath to comment on the substance or tone of the remarks themselves. Excerpts from her discussion with Tucker Carlson, Mike Barnicle and Willie Geist:
MIKE BARNICLE: If I were in the church, I mean if he were a Catholic priest in my parish and started doing that, I and everyone I know would get up and walk out: there'd be no second collection that day, by the way, Father.
MIKA BRZEZINSKI: But Barnicle, they'd be awake at least. I mean, there's the other argument: this is a theatrical presentation, but I gotta tell ya, the political ramifications, let's ask Tucker. Tucker, where do we begin?
TUCKER CARLSON: This is a sermon preached in Barack Obama's home church, and we know it's very much like a lot of other sermons preached in Barack Obama's home church over a long period of time, and yet Barack Obama is shocked, shocked that this sermon was preached. I mean, this exact guy, who was a close friend of the Reverend Wright's, was out defending Louis Farrakhan in the most aggressive possible terms recently, so it's not like we just learned he's a creep. And by the way, look at the congregation as he says this.
WILLIE GEIST: Yes.
CARLSON: They love it! They're on their feet. Now this is, again, Obama's home congregation. I'm not saying that for partisan reasons. I'm saying it because it gets to an unanswered and I think burning question which has never been resolved, which is: what the hell were you doing in that church for 20 years? Didn't you notice that?
BRZEZINSKI: It's a good question. I also think there are questions about these churches and the differences between certain churches, but right now what we can talk about --
CARLSON: What does that mean?
BRZEZINSKI: Well, I mean, you know, when it comes to this, I think the thing we ought to look at is potential political ramifications, and there will be some. Whether they are long term or short term, I don't know.
CARLSON: Well I'm interested in the spiritual ramifications.
BRZEZINSKI: I am too.
CARLSON: If you describe this church as your spiritual home, the place that shaped you as a man, morally, and the congregation is on its feet cheering this kind of crap, what does that say?
BRZEZINSKI: I want to hear from them.
CARLSON: I want an explanation.
BRZEZINSKI: I want to hear from them. I certainly don't want to sit here—four white people—assessing this church.
CARLSON: Oh, I do! I think that's totally fair. By the way, the preacher was white! I don't think this has to do with race: it has to do with hatred.BRZEZINSKI: I noticed that. Oh, God. [The screencap shows the flummoxed Mika ducking her head.]
This is the liberal mindset that says whites can't condemn bigotry in a black setting—even when it comes from the mouth of a white preacher. The same mentality that in the context of Rev. Wright's remarks led Time's Rick Stengel to condemn whites for their "incredible ignorance" about black churches. This is the soft bigotry of low expectations.
UPDATE: Roland Martin Comments to NewsBusters on Father Pfleger
CNN contributor Roland Martin [who back in April, while praising Rev. Wright for his remarks at the Detroit NAACP, gave him an 'F' for his comments to the National Press Club] and I have been exchanging emails on related matters this morning. Martin, also a radio talk show host, has offered NewsBusters his comments on the Father Pfleger flap:
What makes this truly a hot media story has nothing to do with Father Pfleger's comments. It is the fact that Sen. Barack Obama is running for president, the comments were made in the pulpit at his church, Trinity United Church of Christ, and were made by a white Catholic priest who is an ardent supporter of him.
Had Pfleger made his comments in his church, and wasn't an Obama supporter, folks would summarily ignore what he said. Look at that fool Pastor David Manning out of Harlem. He has said some of the most vile comments imaginable about Obama, even alleging a gay relationship with Rev. Wright, and although he has often appeared on conservative radio shows —and even Hannity & Colmes TV show—he has largely been ignored.
Pfleger made his comments during a more detailed sermon at Trinity on the same day the United Church of Christ wanted to have a dialogue on race. Will there be a broader discussion on what folks think is white entitlement? Nope. This will be caught up in a major political discussion.
What I'm shocked at is how Pfleger didn't realize that even mentioning Obama, Clinton or McCain would somehow be ignored. This is nuts. Absolutely nuts. I don't get why pastors who have chosen to get involved in the political process—knowing full well the toxic mixing of race, religion and politics—would even go there.
The comments were dumb to even make, even if he thought them! Have I heard them said before by whites and blacks about Clinton? Yes! Have I heard whites say blacks feel entitled to the president? Yes! But do you say it publicly? Of course not! The emails I've gotten from whites, blacks, males and females that are far worse than what Pfleger has uttered would never be said by a public person who has endorsed either candidate.
If he had referenced Clinton feeling entitled to the nomination, no one would have gotten upset. Why? Because that has been discussed for months on television and radio. But the mere mention of her being entitled to the nomination because she's white? Oh, yea, this was easy to see would blow up.

May 30, 2008 - 07:59 ET by KillgraveThere must be a special this week for white, pasty, middle-aged sell-out attention whores.
Nothing is more embarassing than a white person acting like a total idiot in order to gain approval of blacks. This is the white version of an "uncle Tom".
He may get those claps, those cheers, and the pennies in the hat. But no one respects a sell-out apologist. Maybe one day this moron will realize it.
Who's he selling out?
May 30, 2008 - 08:14 ET by americaneagleThis guy is a longtime friend and associate of Rev. Wright and is well known to the people at Trinity UCC, and I seriously doubt that this is his first rodeo there. He is on record as defending Louis Farrakhan in public and he is well known as a serious left leaner in both his theology and his politics. So just whom, pray tell, is he allegedly selling out?
As for his being an "Uncle Tom", he is not doing anything other than what he has always done. From what I have heard about him, this is his usual style of preaching and this is just the type of message he has been putting out for years.
Maybe you need to check the issue of race and/or race relations at the door on this one, because race was not a factor in this particular story except for Mika attempting to use race as a reason not to criticize one of Obama's supporters.
Uncle Tom
May 30, 2008 - 08:20 ET by mofosesameI never, ever thought I'd see an adult "yo-boy" portray himself as a man of God.

We have a white guy here who is doing nothing but pandering to blacks. He uses his skin color to mock a fellow white person using the crudest black stereotypes towards whites. So, yes, he is "selling out" his status as a white person.

May 30, 2008 - 12:33 ET by Indiana Joe"...race was not a factor in this particular story..."
Huh? The guy was talking all about race, how it was HRC's sense of "white entitlement" that is causing the backlash against Obama. And how, by extension, all the attacks on Obama are racially motivated.
I don't get how you can say race isn't a factor here until Mika brought it up.
This guy is a prime example of bringing politics into religion, which the left has a BIG problem with when it's a conservative priest even mentioning a candidate in church.

That's how Democrats have been able to make inroads with blacks. They go into their churches and campaign knowing that Republicans, Christians and the government won't say anything about it. You've seen Hillary in black churches. You've seen John Kerry in black churches. They go there because black churches are off limits towards criticism.

They would probably not go after the Catholic Church because it likely could defend itself.
But I go to a smaller independent church and they would certainly go after us IF anything like this happened but our church respects it's tax deferred status and rarely speaks about political matters at all from the pulpit except maybe to speak in generalities about larger issues.
As said above, I was amazed that this was said in a church from the pulpit. If there was ever a blantant reason to remove tax-exempt status from this church this is it.
That was a partisan political stump speech, What does that have to do with God, Jesus, The bible or being a better Christian? NOTHING.

It's one thing for a pastor to complain about pro life issues or gay marriage. But to mock a former president with profanity and charges of racism?
Mark my words, this is just the beginning. The hatred for Hillary Clinton shows us how Obama plans to castigate anyone in his way.
Liberals and Democrats
May 30, 2008 - 12:49 ET by MSD6Question 1: Is it just me or does it seem that 90% the bigotry, racism and hate is coming from those on the left?
Question 2: I know Obama has condemned Wright and Pfleger but is he still a member of his church?
Question 3: Am I the only one who thinks Wright's replacement as pastor is also racist?
Exactly how far does this
May 30, 2008 - 12:51 ET by Ten7sExactly how far does this have to go before everyone figures out that B.H. Obama's absolutely unacceptable? That he's gotten this far is a dark stain on the American electorate.

May 30, 2008 - 12:54 ET by KC MulvilleI don't accept that as a white man, I have no business discussing what happens in this black church, because this church professes to be Christian. I contend that Christianity doesn't change between white and black people. But even so, as a Catholic (and an ex-Jesuit at that), I am completely entitled to discuss this Catholic priest's behavior. I won't discuss the political impact of his performance, but I can discuss the spiritual impact of it.
This priest's behavior is embarrassing. This is not how priests are supposed to behave. It's such an obvious pandering to the crowd that it's hard to watch. The only possible excuse is that Pfleger wanted to support the validity of the crowd's feelings of race resentment, as if he wanted to assure them that their feelings were accurate. But my question then is: does Pfleger really think that black people needed a white priest to validate their feelings? That's far more condescending than the racism he strives to acknowledge!
What bothers me most is that I see no sense of forgiveness in what the priest says. Priests should always talk about sin, but never sin without forgiveness. You don't spotlight injuries without giving the audience some way to deal with the injury. Instead, this kind of flamboyant performance simply encourages the audience to wallow in their resentment. Much as I dislike Hillary Clinton, it's deeply unfair to target her as the focus of white racism, and to ridicule her for imagined and projected white supremacist feelings. Yet, for the sake of the crowd's adulation, Pfleger indulges in ridiculing Hillary. Then he argues that there's a whole lot of white people equally upset at a black man's success. That isn't forgiveness, even if it was on Hillary.

I have heard numerous sermons about the REAL Messiah, Jesus Christ and His love for ALL people. Maybe I'm old fashioned, but church is a time to worship our Lord, not listen to half-brained nitwits who can barely complete a sentence without cursing, speaking bad about our great nation, or commenting about politics. I have lost count on how many times this supposed "brilliant" man, Barack Obama, was "shocked" by people of his inner circle mouthing some of the most vile anti-American, racist bile imaginable.
Are you saying, Roland, that a sure sign of "presidential-potential" is somone who brags of the intimate associations they hold with certain individuals ( eg.Wright and Pfleger ) to the point of declaring them "spiritual guides and mentors" - but know nothing about how they really feel about America and Americans in general?

He's anti-abortion..but not loud enough for some fundamentalists that think it should be his entire platform. McCain never once spoke up against 8 years of incompetent hirings in DC ( attorney general, asst. att. general, 'heck of a job' Browny ) who were solely selected by church affiliation as payback to Pat Robertson ( see graduating class and how many ended up on Bush payroll... >110 ). He didn't speak up to the quashing of science and dumbing down of policy in complete complience with the goals of the administration under ...evangelical oversight. Did McCain ever say "hey...get your policy from someone other than Billy Graham" ? No. He's a suck up to the theocracy machine...especially when he wants/ needs votes. -The "all what" are the extremeley diverse groups that aren't white protestant males. Radical black leaders that are throwbacks to segredation days, loud feminists, envrionmentalists, gays, immigrants, the art crowd, scientists, socialists, green-conscious capitalists...all come under that big tent. The folk shunned by republicans, largely. Yes there are the extremes in there and the party has to defend their statements. It's a liability and a strong point.
' oh is that why Roe v Wade and school prayer rulings have been overturned? '
-Actually it's been the number one priority of the administration, including leaders like McCain. Supreme court appointments, subsidizing religeous-backed local organizations, blocking all scientific review and oversight of any issue that isn't up to evangelical standards or explanation - like global warming. They haven't been able to pass those key issues because the public won't have it. But they've tried, instead of putting energy into finding ..alternative energy. If you're saying the administration isn't just a figurehead for the evangelicals than sir, you don't know Jack. Or Ralph Reed.
' Pat Robertson, fyi, is a Catholic and W a born-aginer (try again) '
- actually Pat Robertson was ordained as a minister in the 1961 Southern Baptist Convention. He is a pentacostal faith healer, speaking in tongues, all that...which is fine for him. It's not Catholicism. I don't care as long as he's not telling our President that the world is ending next year and to bomb Iran cuz of new testament prophecy...and the pres acts on it.
GW is a born again evangelical...good for him. Coincidentally it came after falling out with drinking and divorce threats from his wife after the daughters' births. Robertson and Graham were constant advisors to GW since....and McCain is fine with it all, despite all the crazy statements. So...'you' try again.
' Anyone with a Christian worldview (read who really believes) will have their political views informed by their faith. '
- define ' Christian worldview '. Again it's about who "says" they believe harder than the next politician. It's 4th grade B.S. Actually in a theocracy churchgoers are informed by the Gov, led by it's religeon of the day. Of course religeon forms your moral views, but since when does the gov have to go to church with you? -'they will know me by my deeds.' ( not my career politician vote )
Reagan didn't need that shi* to win and get things done. 'better check your facts here'
-Actually he didn't wear his religeon on his sleave in lieu of real policy. He was above that, apparently. He wasn't on a religeous war with the Soviets...it was about freedom, not a crusade. God is what free people can do after they are free. Oh..and when Anita Bryant came out with the anti-gay hatred and moralizing, the republicans back then kicked her ass to the curb. Now...jeesh. The fundamentalists took power over the republicans later, in the early 90's, via Ralph Reed political opportunists and out of Texas. Look it all up and check yer facts.
' Truth is truth and they don't contradict (God created both)' ( science )
Yes He did. They don't conflict..science and religeon. At least that's what Catholics believe. But republicans can't believe it under fundamentalism, as green house gases aren't in the bible - word for word. This is why you can't have a president that puts his personal religeon over science. This affects policy...from vaccinations to the environment to energy and how we use the world's assets...and explain how the sun rises. McCain has to appease the fundementalists and the rest of the us on the science issue. Poor guy.
Duh..and undecided. p.s. Hey Pastor Hagy - I'm Catholic..and I vote
'this i doubt you don't have a worldview consistent with believing Catholic, that or you have no clue about your professed faith'
- again, it's that 4th grade crap. I believe more than you do, etc. Criticizing someone else's religeous beliefs is as low as you can go. If you think the current regime is anything close to moral, and you continue to back them and their next regime...then your beliefs are evident enough....'worldview' or whatever bumper sticker you use.
-still looking for someone that thinks the election should be more than religeon.

and the stupid train rolls on

McCain flip flops on religion more than anyone else in DC. Check out this little gem from 2000:
"Neither party should be defined by pandering to the outer reaches of American politics and the agents of intolerance, whether they be Louis Farrakhan and Al Sharpton on the left, or Pat Robertson or Jerry Falwell on the right."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XbrejLsixwk
Hum, and then he quickly pandered by going to Falwell's church.
Sounds like an awful lot of pandering BS to me.
sigh
May 31, 2008 - 22:39 ET by candanceI don't know why I'm bother to respond to this, but we'll give it a whirl.
(for the record, don't bother commenting on NB unless you're ready for detailed arguments. we like to be thorough)
Anyone else sick of hearing about who's preachers are more crazy?
For those of us who understand and appreciate the role a pastor plays in someone's life, we know that the kind of pastor you choose speaks volumes about your characer. It's basically the same as asking if we're tired of hearing about their platforms.
It is very sad that the republican party has been taken over by evangelicals to the point that high gov jobs only compentency require ment is membership in yer church.
If this were true Mike Huckabee would have gotten the party nod. If this were true, we wouldn't have five Republican Senators getting donations from pro-choice lobbyists and people like Arnold Schwarzeneggar running California.
The Dems are open to all
Ha ha ha ha ha ROFPMSL
Are you joking?
Seriously, how many pro-life Democrats are in the Senate right now? Dems who don't believe in global warming? Dems who want to cut taxes? Dems who don't blame Big Oil for anything?
and moderate republicans ( remember them? ) are being drowned out by the freak show.
Shucks then, someone needs to tell John McCain he didn't really get the nod. And then tell Bloomberg he's really not the mayor of NY. And then tell Bill Kristol, Fred Barnes and Tucker Carlson that really don't speak for the current GOP.
If Obama hires / relies on these preachers and their 'insight'
Whew! I guess it's a good thing Obama didn't do anything stupid like call Wright one of his biggest mentors or compare him to his grandmother. Wait, Obama kinda did...
So far no sign of him playing the Jesus lapel pin card or trying to divide by religeon
Using the Bible to defend gay marriage isn't the same as campaigning on religion...Neither is campaigning in church on Sunday morning or telling reporters that you're running for president to fulfill God's work.....I read about these things in an article
http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0108/7850.html
but that'll just be our little secret. You can go back to pretending that Obama doesn't play the religion card now.
Hey Pastor Hagy
I'm sure Pastor Hagee is crying himself to sleep over you. I doubt you even know what denomination he is without hitting Wikipedia.
So, to summarize...you're either quite ignorant about current affairs, too dumb and/or lazy to construct an argument without angry rambling, or you're being obtuse on purpose.
