Anderson Cooper: Focus on Rev. Wright 'Completely Off Track'

Photo of Mark Finkelstein.

Who cares if our next president has chosen as his "spiritual guide" someone who calls on God to damn America, and believes the US brought 9-11 on itself? Completely off track! Let's get back to the important stuff. You know, like the fine print of the candidate's plan to nationalize health care.

That in a nutshell is Anderson Cooper's kvetch about the controversy over the outrageous statements made by Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Jr., the pastor of Barack Obama's church and the man Obama has described as his spiritual guide and advisor.

Cooper made his comments on his 360 show this evening.
ANDERSON COOPER: Is this just the kind of thing that happens in campaigns? It seems we're almost at a point now where it's this or other issues for the Clinton campaign where people are just latching onto anything to strike a blow against their opponent. All this seems to have nothing to do with actual issues that the country is facing which these candidates should be talking about and we probably should be talking about.
And a bit later . . .

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

COOPER: It's also frustrating just from a news standpoint because on the one hand people are talking about it. It's clearly an issue that's bubbling up on the campaign trail, so we end up covering it. But at the same time it does feel just completely off track. And there have been other issues in this campaign which just felt completely off track from the real differences between these candidates, the real issues. It's frustrating that yet again we seem to be mired in this politics as usual.
Raise your hand if you think Cooper wouldn't be so quick to move on if the Republican presidential nominee had such a close relationship with a pastor of comparably extreme views.

So, Anderson Cooper does

So, Anderson Cooper does not think it newsworthy that Barack Obama, a man currently seeking the highest office in the land, has spent the last twenty years of his life attending a church pastored by an America-hating, racist hate-monger, who incidently just happens to be currently advising Obama's campaign.

Anderson, you are truly an ignoramus.

Theme for Election '08: I want my mommy!

Well, RD, let's be fair.

Well, RD, let's be fair.  He said the same thing when others said Geraldine Ferraro should quit the Clinton campaign because her offhand remark was unimportant and we should be....huh?... what's that?.....

Oh, nevermind. -Emily Litella

Too Much Time?

Did Anderson think we were spending too much time on the phony National Guard story run against George Bush in 2004?  How about the Mark Foley page scandal or the George Allen Macacca stories that the press obsessed over in 2006?  Can you say with a straight face that if a white politician was attending a racist church with a racist pastor for the past 20 years that we wouldn’t still be sitting through the 12 part Katie Couric special designed to take him down? Fox News is right; Anderson Cooper is the Paris Hilton of Cable News.

sorry to say this - but AC is an IDIOT

I simply can't believe this story is true! Believe me - I understand Anderson Cooper would say something this idiotic. But I can NOT believe Anderson Cooper is actually this incredibly stupid. Apparently so, however. Are you kidding me? Whether or not a candidate for US president attends a church that promotes black supremacy, yes Anderson, this is a BIG BIG deal! Whether or not a candidate's pastor is a blatant racist, almost a carbon copy of Louis Farrkhan, yes Anderson, this is also a BIG BIG deal! Where the he-double-l you learned anything about reporting is way beyond me! And I come from a tv/radio background of 13 years as reporter and producer. If it's not such a big deal, then why have the networks gone on and on about Geraldine Ferraro speaking the truth. Ferarro's comments were NOT racist. Jeremiah Wright's are! CNN has sunk to the absolute lowest!

Don't be sorry

Don't be sorry, Cooper is an idiot.

Pledge to not support RINOs ever again!

Cooper: Forget news, I have

Cooper: Forget news, I have to protect my candidate.

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

Anderson: No news here, move along!

Gee! I thought the British were famous for the ‘understated comment’.

Anderson’s analogy of Reverend Wright’s harangue about God Damn America as being ,,,”completely off track”,  reminds me of the movie Kill Bill were Bill, in an understated comment,  says that killing everyone in his girl-friends wedding party “was an over-reaction.”

It's not surprisng as Howard

It's not surprisng as Howard Dean says the same thing.

Howard Dean in 2004 was complaining that all Republicans do is talk about issues that "divide" American, like stopping abortion, not giving homosexual marriage a Gov't Seal of Approval, tax cuts "for the wealthy" and the like.

Instead, he said, we should focus on the issues that "Bring America Together" like Raising taxes on the "wealthiest Americans", (silently keep abortion 'safe, legal and "rare"'), (tacitly allow homosexual marriage become the law of the land by our silence), Univeral single-payer health care, the the usual litany of DNC talking points.  Never once did he get questioned on how the GOP platform "divides" while the DNC platform "unites"

To the leftist in the media the end justifies the means, it doesn't matter what the guy "personally does, or stands for" it's whether he is going to push the leftist agenda.

Yeah, Ex

I just heard that the dems will raise taxes on familes who make more than $100K a year by at least 15% (I presume this is a family of four).

I am in SOOOO much trouble here....must visit Costa Rica this summer.  I'm not going to let these idiots steal my work from me.

I'm sorry, a family, or an individual, making the very lowest of six figures is not rich.  Far from it.  What is the matter with these people?

bt, you should know by now

bt, you should know by now that, even if you put in 16-18 hour days....if you earn that much money, you are NOT one of those "working families." That's not defined by  actual "work"....it's matter of "earnings." You know, like being an authentic "black" is a set of beliefs, not a skin color.

exactly MB

No matter if you borrow 60K to go to college. No matter if you have a parent in a nursing home and you're paying the bulk of the expenses. No matter if you work 70 hours a week for that salary.

All they see is the paycheck at the end. And whether or not they helped you earn a dime of it, they still believe they've earned the right to share it.

They expect business owners to put up all the investment, put their own credit on the line, pay the dues when something goes wrong, and spend their whole lives building a company - and as soon as that company takes off, they are waiting in the wings to take the benefit for themselves.

Wrights racist church.

Just look at Wrights church as the black KKK. No difference so they can't even complain about that anymore. David Duke's Klan and Pastor Wright's congregration are equals.

Old, Retired and glad of it.

wrong

Let's not get carried away here. They may be very similar in rhetoric but the difference in actions between the strong arm tactics of KKK (the vengeance arm of the Democrat Party) and Rev. Wright's church is great. I don't believe there has been a call for violence from the church even though the good Rev. and his congregation do seem to be promoting hate.

Comparing the two is as bad as the frequent Nazi references in politics today that disregard how truly evil the actions of the Nazis were.

Dangerous though

Well follow this thru...the rev might not be actually advocating violence but is he talking hate speech? Some folks get all caught up in this kind of thing and leap to dangerous places, insired by such speech. So the rev might have someone emboldened by his speech and act on it. Not the same as Charlie Manson, I agree, but a possible danger nonetheless. Having said that, the rev has every right in the world to express himself, free speech is free speech. No one has the right to censor him. The issue here is that a major candidate for the presidency of the US is a member of this church. I for one want to know how this affects Obama.

The (potential) President

The (potential) President of the United States belongs to a racial separatist church and has as his spiritual adviser someone who believes in racial separatism and that American is a nation that God should damn and that's not a story to cover?

The teachings of that church has no possible role or affect on the public policies of that President?

This is absurd. Of course it's something that we need to examine.

The role of the press in presidential elections is to not only cover the policies of the candidates; but to turn the candidates inside out and upside down to reveal their character, what makes them tick, and who the real person is.

That Mr. Cooper doesn't recognize this is frankly astonishing.

SMG, you hit the nail on the

SMG, you hit the nail on the head. We need to know the character of the candidates. Obama lost me when he would not wear a lapel pin with the US flag on it. I want someone who is going to stand up for this country as the most powerful person in the world. Of course, his other policies suck, too.

Sounds like!

Sounds like we have some low information lunchbucket clintonites screeding to the notion that ms. clinton has been putting out. I was raised a Southern Baptist in the South and can tell you that 95% of everything that comes out of a preachers mouth is canted to getting the congregation to rally to the cause>>>>SUPPORTING THE CHURCH WITH MONEY- appealing to the lowest common denominator--and keeping the group in the fold. Some spew anything that comes to mind. This is show biz at the local level.
Obama is christian- his ex-preacher is a showman-

First the clintons painted him 'not black enough- then a drug dealer-then a 'kid' -code for uppity- then came fairytales- code for 'he does not know his place'- then plagarist-then anti-abortion- then-of all things--KEN STARR.
How is this any different from the dirty kitchen sink---just like the above they will not stick-or be found baseless and without merit.
Shameless is her middle name--Her new #19 slogan

'IF NOT ME THEN THE GOP'

Obama is christian- his

Obama is christian- his ex-preacher is a showman-

Are you saying that in private, he really doesn't hold those views and he just uses them as show-biz?

Maybe someone should tell his congregants...because they came out of there saying that he was speaking truth!

Even if true...he was using America-hating race-baiting to campaign for Obama from the pulpit..(he mentioned both candidates by name) which btw is illegal....

SMG, I just posted a rant

SMG, I just posted a rant at the bottom of this thread that covers the same points. If this man is going to continue to be Obama's spiritual adviser if he gets elected President, of course we have not only a reason but an obligation to be concerned!

Oh, man, I gotta go turn off "Morning Joe"...Mika just said about Wright... a man that "some call" racist.........LOL

"nother roll of duct tape please!!"

Take out "Rev. Jeremiah Wright" said...

...and insert, "David Duke said;" then stand back and watch the fireworks!

(Or, "Rush Limbaugh said," "Sean Hannity said," etc.)

AND...I wonder if, in their church bulletin for Sunday services, they assigned a language rating? I can picture it:

"Today's 11:00 A.M. sermon by Rev Dr. Jerry Wright is entitled, "God D*** America!" (Rated R for language, violence, and overt racism; not suitable for children under 17.)

"Children's Church today will feature a guest speaker, the Rev. Al Sharpton, former starting guard for the New York City FAT SLOB BASKETBALL LEAGUE, who will dribble two balls at once with his tongue while presenting a sermon entitled, "Kill Da Whi-tayz;" referring to his team slogan when they played a basketball tourney game (and won 107-2!) with the Oral Roberts University Girls Debating Team."

EXCELLENT point.

We'll never see it discussed in the MsM, though.

Candy Land

Candy Crowley says Reverend Wright is "retired now" as if it were all just a distant memory.

Questions for Crowley:

Did you do your research?

Are you aware that Wright's resignation isn't effective until May of this year?

Are you aware that Wright is currently working for the Obama campaign?

Are you aware of anything outside your little bubble?

If you are aware, why don't you report it?

Okay, I'll admit it, that last one is a stupid question..........

Barker, LMAO

Is this really happening; more like dream land , nightmare.

Iranian uranium; Iranian ICBM's; Iranian satellites..CHANGE is comming BELIEVE in that!

retired but....

Isnt the pastor working on Obama's campaign now?

Anderson Cooper

What a maroon!

Something else, Anderson.

All this seems to have nothing to do with actual issues that the country is facing.

Anderson, unless you haven't been paying attention, Obama's campaign has had little, if anything, to do with the issues. All we have been getting from this candidate are some rather vague promises of "hope" and "change." And when we aren't getting that, it is "change" and "hope."

Perhaps one of you "journalists" @ CNN might consider taking a break from kissing the hairy behind of the DNC donkey, and trouble yourselves to actually ask the man some pointed, issues-related questions. Up to now, most of you "journalists" have done little but somewhat apologetically toss limp-wristed, pitiful Nerf balls toward the man.

However, asking a presidential candidate, regardless of party affiliation, pointed questions is what a real journalist would do. This means that we shant be seeing those questions coming from you.

Theme for Election '08: I want my mommy!

geez Anderson

Is it your turn to put the knee pads on?

Raise my hand?

I am jumping up and down yell and screaming. This is such a double standard...what about Bob Jones University in 2000? These people, obama, michelle, and their preacher are so filled with hate and despise American it is sad for them. I never watch oprah...is this what she believes?

YOU ALMOST GOT IT...

DEVILDOCMOM,

You are on the right track, I'm not sure what Barack Obama thinks, he says nothing in these great speeches he gives out on the stump. But Michelle Obama, THAT is a different story.

She is the one who has been shooting her mouth off about how lousy this country is. Michelle said something like 'Barack as a black man could be shot in the street'. Yes he could, would'nt be the first person running for president with death threats over his head. Just ask the Kennedy's. She said that for the first time in he adult (1982)life that she was proud of America. Lots of things have happened since 82 to be proud of. Her mouth has some trouble, & I don't think she stop it anytime soon.

You mention his church, & it's leader. The Rev. J.Wright is a racist, a full blown hatemonger. He kisses "Calypso"Louie's" @$$, & give him some sort of "Lifetime Achievement Award". I don't know this, but I have a hunch that joining this church was her idea. The Obama's joined this church, & have been members for 20 years. I think becoming members was her idea, & I think Michelle shares many of the ideas that Rev.Wright preaches. If Barack is in line with any of this thinking, he is far better at hiding it then Michelle.

As for Oprah, she cares about what makes her money & what makes her feel good, & what makes her feel good is making money.

"Some of us are wise, some of us are otherwise"  Mark Levin

Rev J.Wright

Danyhboy, you are exactly on track.   Not only

did they attend this church, this man married

Michelle and Obama.   Michelle spouts his

rhetoric every time she opens her mouth.   When

are the people who think Obama is the greatest

thing since sliced bread going to wake up and

ask some serious questions instead of listening

to his platitudes.

Yes, you do not know what

bho believes, he is so adept at hiding it...even after all her "affirmative action" chances, michelle cannot hid what she is and what she believes. Good point regarding oprah.

What is Cooper's track record?

Did Cooper play up the Geraldine Ferraro or Steve King stories?

Anderson Cooper's Blindness

Yes, Cooper is blind to the true import of this all.

He has chosen to be this way. It was the price he paid to be in with the "in" crowd that accepts him at CNN and elsewhere where the left congregates.

He can't even pretend to see it from our point of view; at least, then, he could relate to us well enough to have a dialogue.

The problem is simple.

Now that Obama's spiritual mentor has shown us his real attitude toward the US, we don't have to ask ourselves why Obama doesn't where a flagpin or cover his heart during the national anthem. Or how he can tolerate having ex-Weathermen as friends. Or why his wife is so angry with the US given all that she has been given.

He doesn't hate America, nor does Cooper, but the actual contempt in which they hold it or the degree to which they feel embarassed to defend the US from exaggeratged or downright false accusations leaves it more than clear to us that they are infected with the modern liberal attitudes.

So Obama's candidacy is over. He will never be president. I will hold my nose and voter for McCain for McPresident.

Rex

"All this seems to have

"All this seems to have nothing to do with actual issues that the country is facing which these candidates should be talking about and we probably should be talking about."

I guess this means that it would be okay with Cooper if Charles Manson was running for President, you know, as long as we only discuss the actual issues facing the country. Promise universal health care, then who you are doesn't really matter very much

Wonder if he thought Geraldine's comments were "off track" too?

Yeah Cooper

Who cares if Charlie dabbled in a little bit of 'Helter Skelter'? He's for gun control, right?

It's not off track, in

It's not off track, in fact, it's all over the track as it should be.  But the MSM will put this in the dead letter box, nothing to see here folks...That's why we need to bring it up, or a Conservative at Obama's campaign rallies needs to bring it up every day. Surely we have someone at his campaign rallies, do we not? If for nothing else just to needle his sorry ass, the Hillary campaign will get blamed for it anyway...lol.

CR

The 527's should have a field day with this, despite McCain's disdain.

What Else Can We Expect?

Cooper is an agenda chasing liberal. He needs to have the subject changed in order to get democrats elected in '08. He and his ilk have been apoplectic since Bush was elected in '00. He can't even consider the possibility of republicans keeping the White House in the next election. Cooper and his buds will be having a cyanide party if that happens.

Interesting

So did little boy Vanderbilt say this when the media were incessantly going on about Mitt Romney's Mormonism?

No?

Nope!

-cs™

A COUPLE OF THINGS...

Hannity was the 1st person to look into Obama's church & Rev.J.Wright & what they stand for & preach. We heard all about Romney's Mormonism, & the MSM was hellbent on using his LDS faith against him.

The usual experiance with mormons for most Americans consists of a couple of LDS members who come by your house every 2-3 years & ask you to talk about faith. Most people say no thanks & they thank you for your time & move on. I've known a couple of them  over the years & had no trouble. Too bad too many in the MSM are closed minded, "liberal", elitists. I might even say bigots in some cases, but that's just my opinion.

Carl Rove........

You magnificent SO a B

Let me clear my throat...

Ahem! So, according to this man (who calls himself a man of God), Jesus, our beloved Lord and Savior, was a black man surrounded by oppressive whiteys holding Him down. This is the first time I have heard anyone say a person who came from the tribes of Levi and Judah was born black.Uhh, simple study will show that the etymology of the word ADAM is properly 'ruddy-complected' or simply the ability to show blood in the face. Is this guy Osam...Obama a college grad? Do we really want a world leader; in fact THE world leader, who cannot understand simple biology? I have never heard of two white people giving birth to a black child...and I don't mean Joseph...the book of Luke makes it clear that Mary and Elizabeth were daughters of Levi and that Mary's father was of the tribe of Judah. God said He will create flesh man in his own image(we all look now as we look in Heaven)AND God included Himself in that statement( Hebrews ch.2 v 14). God loves ALL His Children regardless of race, after all, He created ALL the races on the sixth day.Racism is purely a flesh-based fear of others and does not belong in any house of God. Just what we need...THE world leader believing anything some chump in a fancy robe says...STUDY, CHILDREN!

sentforth, I had Rush on

sentforth, I had Rush on for a bit yesterday, and I think it was his first caller, challenged Rush to prove that anything Rev. Wright said wasn't true. So Rush said "Jesus was a black man??? He was a Jew!" and they guy said well He was darker than you.

So there you go! Logic is lost on some people. I also remember Her Royal Clintoness at one time saying that Jesus' family was homeless; that's why He was born in a stable.

To them, "fake, but accurate" is just fine and dandy!

HiiYah! Motherbelt

I reckon facts just cloud-up the liberal brainflow.

Christ Jesus came from an affluent family...why, His uncle was Joseph of Arimathea the celebrated tin miner.

This is why liberals cannot be true Christians...Christ Jesus taught things like:

Skin color--unimportant

Cashflow--unimportant

Stuff--unimportant

Mercedes Benz--unimportant

and on it goes...

Luv ya, Motherbelt!!Luv Luv Luv ya!!

Gosh....I just don't know

Gosh....I just don't know what to say to that!   LOL

Have a great day!

Awww...gee whiz

I've read your posts long before I registered here at NB and I have always thought that you are a well-centered person according to what you write...that's all..I Luvs me some sensible people. They are few and far between.

 Have a peachy day, too!

I love the jesus' family was

I love the jesus' family was homeless thing from crybaby liberals who try and make you feel like we need more sympathy or something . . . because then you get to point out that he was staying there because the hotels were filled up due to a govt census

Caution!! Rant ahead!!

OK, I just caught a few minutes of "Morning Joe." Mika B. just has me reaching for the duct tape every time!! She says that Obama answered questions about his pastor a year ago, and this shouldn't be an issue!! So Joe says well it's different now, he's the frontrunner, so Mika says well that's the only reason it's coming out now, like it's a dirty trick. She says Obama has "distanced" himself and that should be the end of it.

So why is it that Repbulicans, and even other Democrats are required to not only "distance" themselves but "divest" themselves of folks like Geraldine Ferraro who make far less volatile statements, while Barack Obama is simply allowed to say "I don't agree with him" and keep him on the campaign?????

Good grief!! Do you think for a minute that John McCain would be allowed to have Bob Jones on his campaign, even as an informal advisor and just get away with saying "Well, I don't agree with everything he says...."

Is this guy going to continue to be Obama's spiritual adviser if he is elected President? If so, shouldn't that be of concern to Americans? Does anyone think he won't try to influence him in the White House??? And we're supposed to just let Obama say well I won't listen to him on policy, and let it go at that?

They should be hounding Obama to cut the guy loose from his campaign. And he should be getting asked, "Is this what Rev. Wright has been saying for all the years you've known him? How could this man be your spiritual adviser for all these years, if you disagree with what he says?

But they won't.

OK. Rant over for now. Time to go find another roll of duct tape.

motherbelt.

Yeah, I saw that too. She kept saying "Obama has distanced himself from the comments".

Yeah Mika, so distant hes working on the campsign as an advisor! Seriously, does she think before she speaks?

Mika...Mika....Mika....

Chris Matthews, believe it or not, just gave a fantastic dissertation on how if you don't come out swinging and saying you love America, as is, warts and all, you won't get elected President and shouldn't be president, and that's why this stuff from Wright is so important.

So Mika says...well, we'll see where this is coming from...... and where it's going....she really thinks the big story is who is creating all this trouble for Obama, and why.

Mika....last name.....cafeteria.

Dr Jeremiah Wright

All the Republicans need to do is make a commercial of Wright's rant, run it every 10 or 15 minutes all day every day, until the election.  This should eliminate about 50% of the people even condidering voting for Obama.

It's in the works

Always has and always will be...people are judged by the company they keep.

If conservatives are RIGHT, then liberals must be WRONG.

I'm sure Moyer already has an in depth interviews set up with Obama and Wright to expose Wright for who he is and to investigate what effect 20 years of listening to his views might have on Obama's approach to things.

Right.

PJ...Oh, yeah....start

PJ...Oh, yeah....start holding your breath....LOL

Here is what democrats.com has to say...

...about McCain and Hagee:

"...just last week McCain said he was "proud" to have the endorsement of scandal-plagued pastor John Hagee, despite Hagee's history of discriminatory comments about women, African Americans, Jewish Americans, Catholics, Muslim Americans, LGBT Americans, and the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

When confronted about Hagee's comments, McCain said only that he does not "support or endorse or agree with some of the things" Hagee has said. [McCain Media Availability, 2/29/08] McCain and his campaign have refused to say which of Hagee's positions he endorses and refused to even say whether McCain knew about Hagee's history of divisiveness when he asked for an endorsement. [CNN, 2/29/08]

Apparently, like on so many other issues, John McCain is willing to embrace just about anyone to win an election. "

Note this site is paid for by the DNC.  I wonder what they might have to say about the views of Obama's "spiritual advisor"?

(crickets chirping)

The media associate everything Falwell says with the Republican

candidate even though he isn't their personal spiritual adviser. Bush was asked to repudiate everything offensive that came out of someone from the Christian right. Remember when Falwell said the same thing as Obama's pastor about the U.S. deserving 9/11 and the media went nuts? A pastor on the left says it and it's no big deal even though he is the chosen spiritual adviser of the presidential candidate.

ah, Dee, but you have to

ah, Dee, but you have to realize....

Falwell said it was because of gays and abortion that we were punished.. How dare he!!!

Wright says it's because we keep black people down and kill people...

Obviousy Rev. Wright has the "right" reasons....so, no problem.
