WashPost Wrongly Claimed US Is Still Biggest Greenhouse Gas Emitter

The media frames America in anthropogenic global warming articles as the evil Earth Killer, and everything from a sparrow flying into a glass window to Darfur's genocide is America's and George Bush's fault, regardless of facts or science.

In an August 4 article which stated President Bush invited the world's leading economic powers to participate in a "climate change summit” that intends to set "voluntary goals for lowering greenhouse gas emissions while sustaining growth,” the Washington Post upheld this tradition by stating (emphasis mine throughout):

The United States, the world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases, is not a party to the Kyoto agreement, which calls for the 35 participating nations to cut greenhouse gas emissions. Rapidly developing countries including India, China and Brazil are not bound by the deal, despite booming growth and worsening air pollution in those nations, a factor that has caused Bush to call the accord unworkable.

The problem is that the US is no longer the “world's largest emitter of greenhouse gases.” In June China swept past the US to take the top spot. I know it's hard to keep up with the minutia of who's hurting Mother Earth, but this change was a pretty big deal—or at least it should have been.

I guess I shouldn't be too hard on reporter Michael A. Fletcher for not noticing that the US is no longer number one, considering his own paper didn't report China overtaking the US when it happened. In fact, very little ink was devoted to the momentous occasion. Why, it's almost as if the media do not care as much about the emissions as who is doing the emitting.

With over a billion people

With over a billion people emitting gas, I think they "passed" us years ago.

Truth

The new media never lets the truth get in the way of left-wing propaganda. Did someone say 1984?

NEVER,NEVER trust a liberal

I wrote a polite e mail to letters@washpost.com to inform them of the obvious oversight and asked for a correction. I am sure we will see one.

Also I read the comments for the article (you have to sign in)...you can't tell me the paper doesn't play to the left. Every comment I saw before quitting was so anti Bush it was ridiculous.

Yeah, the WaPo commenters

Yeah, the WaPo commenters are famous for that. Even the paper's own "public editor" called them out on it a while back.

China is a communist country, so the left gives it a pass.

Why, it's almost as if the media do not care as much about the emissions as who is doing the emitting.

Exactly. China is, after all, a huge, "classless" communist country (whose government isn't exactly friendly toward us-huge plus there among the lefities) where everyone is equal(ly miserable) except, of course, for the chosen elites. Therefore, China gets a pass on the pollution it produces.

Of course, the idea that communism fosters a classless society has long been proven to be a crock, as high Soviet party officials, just like their counterparts in other communist countries, got to shop in very well-stocked stores, while the rest of the members of the proletariat were forced to wait in long lines for hours for the privilege of fighting over whatever crumbs were leftover.

We, on the other hand, are a big, eeevil capitalist country, where workers are exploited by big, eeevil corporations. Therefore, we aren't allowed to polute, as an increase in production (in order to continue to expand the economy) will invariably result in a increase in the output of pollution. That cannot be allowed.

Help Fred defeat everybody.

What a shock. China could

What a shock. China could double or triple the amount of CO2 the US produces, and the lib media would still say the US is the number one producer of CO2.
