Friday's "American Morning" featured a segment dedicated to fact checking Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin's speech to the Republican National Convention. In introducing the reporter who did the fact checking, co-host Kiran Chetry claimed, "CNN's Deborah Feyerick is here to fact check Palin's speech and I'm sure whenever politics is involved we have to fact check these."
Apparently, though, "American Morning" only feels the need to fact check speeches given by Republican candidates because the morning show did not provide the same fact checking analysis of the Democratic National Convention speeches given by Democratic vice presidential candidate Joe Biden or Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama. They did, however, fact check former president Bill Clinton's speech to the Democratic National Convention and argued that some of his more conservative policies helped to usher in the "mortgage crisis."
Nevertheless, Feyerick's fact check needs a little fact checking of its own. One of the statements in Palin's speech that CNN found "false" was her claim that she "stood up to the special interests and the lobbyists." To negate this claim, Feyerick said, "Palin was the Wasilla mayor to hire a Washington lobbyist, securing $11 million in special funding for the town." However, Palin prefaced this particular statement by saying "This was the spirit that brought me to the governor's office, when I took on the old politics as usual in Juneau," signifying that her claim of standing up to special interests, lobbyists and big oil companies took place when she became governor.
About Palin's claim about the $40 billion natural gas pipeline, Feyerick said "yes and no." After noting that the pipeline projected was approved, the reporter used the fact that the company hasn't started to build the pipeline yet to show that Palin's claim wasn't completely true.
Feyerick also brought up that as governor, Palin asked Congress for $453 million for earmarks, but the network hardly mentions Obama's requests for earmarks, including one for his wife's hospital.
Finally, Feyerick ended her report on a snarky note:
Near the end of her speech, Governor Palin reviewed Barack Obama's positions on energy, taxes, terrorism and government spending. Her review of his record also requires some fact checking.
A transcript of the segment follows:
CINDY MCCAIN: John has picked a reform- minded, hockey-momming, basketball-shooting, moose-hunting, salmon- fishing, pistol-packing mother of five for vice president.KIRAN CHETRY: Well, that was Cindy McCain talking about Sarah Palin last night. And Palin herself roused the Republicans with her fiery speech. But was everything she said completely true? CNN's Deborah Feyerick is here to fact check Palin's speech and I'm sure whenever politics is involved we have to fact check these.
DEBORAH FEYERICK: It's a little bit relevant.
CHETRY: Right. Exactly.
FEYERICK: Exactly. Well, you know, Kiran, Governor Palin delivered her speech with conviction, a sense of what you see is what you get. But after checking budget records and speaking to government officials and Alaska lawmakers, some of the claims are a bit of a stretch.
GOV. SARAH PALIN: You know, they say the difference between a hockey mom and a pit bull? Lipstick.
FEYERICK: Putting Democrats on notice, Sarah Palin fired up Republicans listing what she's done and why she's qualified to be vice president. But is it all true?
PALIN: I stood up to the special interests and the lobbyists.
FEYERICK: Well, not entirely. Palin was the first Wasilla mayor to hire a Washington lobbyist, securing $11 million in special funding for the town.
PALIN: And championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress.
FEYERICK: Not true. In her two years as governor, Palin has asked Congress for $453 million for so-called earmarks, including $1 million for rock fish research. That famous $398 million bridge to nowhere?
PALIN: I told the Congress, thanks but no thanks.
FEYERICK: In fact, Alaska got that money but it was used for other projects. Steven Ellis is with an advocacy group that tracks public spending.
STEVE ELLIS, TAXPAYERS FOR COMMON SENSE ACTION: Certainly she has got Wasilla into the earmarks game. She, you know, worked the system and was able to bring home earmarks and then certainly has been part of the earmark system in Alaska. And so, it's just something that is interesting to juxtapose with Senator McCain's position which has been stalwart no earmarks ever.
FEYERICK: On cleaning up state government.
PALIN: And today that ethics reform is the law.
FEYERICK: That's true. She signed it last year.

Mr. Obama argued that his opponent was “intent on continuing the
economic policies that just this year have caused the American economy
to lose 605,000 jobs.”
Nope, that would be liberal policies and the do nothing democrat congress that has not reigned in higher energy costs. The current spike in unemployment is DIRECTLY related to our higher energy costs. To a degree, some of the bubble pop in the mortgage industry and foreclosures were also related to this.
“Today’s jobs report is a reminder of what’s at stake in this election,” Mr. Obama said in a statement.
He is right about this. We can't afford a socialist congress and a socialist president.

Fri, 09/05/2008 - 14:04 ET by Kevin HalpernIt would seem it is not only the MSM media that are liberally biased. This week the Web site factcheck.org was "fact checking" the GOP convention daily. Last week it did scant check of "facts" put forth by speakers at the Democratic convention.

Fri, 09/05/2008 - 14:24 ET by Jerry MackI believe that it is an elected officials job to have as much of their state federal taxpayers money returned from the federal government to the state, towns and cities as possible for worthwhile projects such as schools, flood control and roads. Here in California state officials are always crying about not getting their fair share. One of Arnolds campaign promises was to get more of California tax dollars back fom the federal government. Some of the Northwestern states receive more for roads and such than they pay in.(Can not remember website) I do not know how much Alaska gets back. Perhaps the Rock fish is very important to the Alaskan fisheries.
I do not believe that the one million dollars for the Rock and Roll hall of fame was a worthwhile project.

I love Palin and her tenacity, I hope, so far anyway, she might be the first gal Prez...but for people to keep having blinders on about anyone politically then they don't understand that they don't call it blood sport for nothing.
she did have earmarks, she did agree with Stevens about the Bridge in the beginning, she did hire a lobbysist...
big deal and so what...you want to bring in money for your state, if you can't get the votes to make money with oil ect...get it however you can, Alaska's logging and mills have been shut down in so many towns years ago that I don't even want to go there, we all know about the drilling, the fed govt has two thirds of the land under their control, the environs have had law-suits til the cows come home, on and on it goes....
The thing that bothers me here with all of this, I like PT, he isn't a troll, he had made some good points that are truthful about Palin's record....I just wished he would calm down and others as well...and try to respect each others opinions here.
Palin is the best thing that has happened for some of us so far in a long time....I do want the truth to be the truth though.
Well, that is my rant about all of this...not really a rant, just my say...there is a lot more to learn as time goes on...what has been despicable and still is, is the msm...which I hope the keep up, because that gal can smile and twist the knife in so well they look it as pleasure at the time she is doing it, and not realize until much later that she just killed them!

Sat, 09/06/2008 - 21:12 ET by mbuel>=)
Seriously. Do you REALLY want to go down this route, where we compare the GOP VP's experience to OBAMA's LACK OF?
I could list off that she managed to clean up her party in Alaska, even though the head of the GOP ethics board offered her a lucrative position to be quiet... This contrasts nicely with Obama, who also confronted dirty politics in Chicago, and simply absorbed himself into the machine.
I could talk about the "bridge to nowhere", but you'd probably repeat the DNC talking point that she was for the bridge, before she was against it. (flaky at best.)
I could talk about the fact that she's had executive experience as both a mayor and the governor, whereas Obama has simply been a Senator who likes to vote "Present".
But none of that matters to you I bet...
Do you think the world owes you a living? Obama does, and more for black people than for everyone. When asked about reparations, he said he was against them.... Because it didn't go far enough. What Obama wants amounts to the BIGGEST transfer of wealth ever. This transfer will cause massive job loss, and economic disaster.
So I'll stick with McCain/Palin thank you.
Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.

Sat, 09/06/2008 - 21:47 ET by balboaNeither Palin nor Obama has tremendous experience, so go ahead and compare them if you'd like.

Sat, 09/06/2008 - 23:03 ET by mbuelYour upset about the bridge to nowhere because SHE LISTENED to the people? What if EVERY politician did that?
Also, think about your statement;
"Neither Palin nor Obama has tremendous experience"
1) Again this is BS, Palin was in an executive position, Obama was a senator who rarely made a decision and when he did he voted far left. He's NEVER been in charge of anything.
2) But let's presume that they do have "equal inexperience", Obama is THE MAIN TICKET. He's the guy that will be "leading" the nation. McCain has SO much over this guy, it's not even funny.
Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.

Sat, 09/06/2008 - 23:11 ET by balboaPalin has some experience in government. I don't know if a year and a half as governor of Alaska is enough to be VP. Same as I don't know if Obama's limited senatorial stint is enough to be president.
I fully admit that Obama doesn't have great experience. I don't pretend otherwise. I don't think the right should do the same with Palin.
As for this statement: "SHE LISTENED to the people? What if EVERY politician did that?"

As for Palin, she was picked for her stand on abortion and being a woman which satisfies the social conservative side of the GOP ticket, no other reason. She has no foreign policy experience, limited to nonexistent federal economic experience, no idea what a vice president does, the list continues...and I didn't bring up the other great choices in the GOP...so, PopTech, myself, and a number of others in the conservative side question this pick. I'm voicing my opinion like many others...so, Bush captured the social conservatives with some great promises if they continued to vote for him, which they did...Has Bush lived up to his promises?Once McCain has seized the White House will he live up to his promises? Will he use his VP like so many Presidents before Bush...hardly seen, noticed, and used for funerals. Cheney is an anomaly and I think you are about to see the end of an era with his VP position.

No other person on McCain's short list had foreign policy or "federal" economic experience. Quit whining.
Palin has more experience than Obama who was sure to win without this pick. Now we actually have a chance. I don't think you care about us having a chance, you must want Obama to win.

Okay, bask in the light and glow of Sarah. Raise your hands up and praise the lord above for such a wonderful pick for this country. She is the hottest VP ever picked. She knows families since she has one. She knows executive leadership by being a mayor of a small town of 7800 people and now Gov. of the Great State of Alaska which has a HUGE population of 665,000 residents. Oh yeah, she's close to Russia...Guilani was a mayor, Pawlenty is a governor, Condi is Secretary of State, gosh, you're right she is more qualified than those people and so many more...

No one here worships Palin like you people worship Obama. If you noticed the crowds, no one was glazed over in awe of her, they cheered her and listened like normal people not mind dead robots like Obama's supporters.
That 7,800 people as Mayor and 665,000 people as Governor is approx 770,000 times the amount that Obama and Biden have served directly combined. It's not about picking the most qualified person on paper. All the education and so called experience don't mean anything if you can't get elected or you can't bring results. Condi has not lead any people, and Pawlenty has not brought as much change. The only person I would agree is more qualified would be Romney but he'd would not have brought the people she brings and he wouldn't have represented reform.

She has no foreign policy experience
So, exactly how much foreign policy experience did George W. Bush have when running for POTUS in 2000?
What is more, you seem to think that prior experience in this area is a must. I find that a rather curious assertion given the bumbling and fumbling in this area by Dr. Rice and others.
Besides, whatever happened to the idea of "young minds, fresh ideas?"

Thu, 09/11/2008 - 19:49 ET byRDHelm,
I have been going through previous postings (the search aspect of this site is pretty deplorable). My understanding is the longer in the tooth of the poster, the level of viciousness and overall intolerance increases. My critique- If you have a personal dislike for a poster...don't respond to his/her postings. If you feel like someone's honor (in a virtual medium?) must be defended, by all means, send them a private message or rat them out to the moderators. The give and take of a debate is fine to explore different views...the personal attack can be left for the private messages or a voodoo dummy with pins. Make a comment, have a rebuttal and move on to another issue. I can think whatever I want to think...If I think all pregnant teenagers are little sluts and whores, so what? If Sarah Palin's kid falls into the category, so what? If you want to state you disagree, state it and then move along...it doesn't make the little slut any less pregnant nor does it make her less of a whore, so what?
For someone to tell me..."Believe me when I tell you...", I normally don't since they want to push a certain agenda.
I'll move on as I have stated what I wanted to state.
By the way...Kudos to the sales & marketing people of this site the chicks in the t-shirts keep bringing me back to this site. Could they please change them more often? Go "NOBAMA! chick, you're smokin' hot!!!

Sat, 09/06/2008 - 21:42 ET by mbuelI'll take the "uneducated" country hick over elitist Obama any day of the week.
but let's go over your list straight from Obama's slime team:
1) 'Commander' Palin and the Alaska National Guard'Anchorage Daily News)
-> "Some authorities have been given to me that she has acknowledged that
I can execute," he said. "For others I have to ask her each time."
Do you think Palin wasn't aware of what was going on with her National Guard? That's a stretch dude.
2) Palin education took her to five collegesAnchorage Daily News)
-> Many of us spend alot of time in many different colleges. Many of us are simply educated by the school of hard knocks.
and seven presidents didn't even graduate college:
http://wiki.answers.com/Q/Which_7_presidents_did_not_graduate_college
George Washington and Abraham Lincoln? Would you say their leadership abilities were detrimented from not graduating from Harvard? Like Teddy Roosevelt who like Obama wanted Nationalized Health Care?
The other fact of this is, that Obama made it into college with affirmative action.
3) Palin: Iraq war 'a task that is from God' (Anchorage Daily News)
-> This is an outright lie.
“Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right. Also, for this country, that our leaders,
our national leaders, are sending [U.S. soldiers] out on a task that is
from God,” she exhorted the congregants. “That’s what we have to make
sure that we’re praying for, that there is a plan and that that plan is
God’s plan.”
4) Palin's pork requests confound reformer imageAnchorage Daily News)
-> I wouldn't believe this one either. It sounds like it's from someone who is disgruntled about Palin.
5) Palin pressured Wasilla librarian during first term (Anchorage Daily News)
http://news.bostonherald.com/news/2008/view.bg?articleid=1117009&format=&page=2&listingType=2008pres#articleFull
She never pressured the librarian. She simply asked her a question. And this WHOLE deal was started from a disgruntled former city employee just like I stated above.
6) Palin says daughter, 17, is pregnant (Anchorage Daily News)
And? How does this show ANYTHING about Palin dood?
7) Palin staff pushed to have trooper fired (Anchorage Daily News)
Said trooper should have been fired after it was found out about his abuses of power and tasering his step son.
8) Palin touts stance on 'Bridge to Nowhere,' doesn't note flip-flop (Anchorage Daily News)
She changed her stance to what the people of Alaska wanted... doesn't that say something versus Obama who has voted so far left, he's the furthest left politician in the US senate?
So what it comes down to PT:
1) You are either a populist or a collectivist. Someone who believes in the power of the individual, or the power of marxism.
2) On the one hand, you have Obama who is a former radical community organizer, and has radical friends all over the place that hate America. He would have us pay for the reparations of slavery and keep gas prices as high as possible to fight global warming. (something I know you don't believe in.)
3) On the other hand you have McCain, who has spent his years in service of the people, NOT his party. He believes in the power of the individual is GREATER than the power of government. Obama wants to go to washington to change America from Washington. McCain wants to lead Washington to Change Washington for the people.
The difference is stark, and no amount of left wing smears are going to make me vote for the radical marxist.
Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.
Silent Obama: WHERE ARE HIS RECORDS?
Fri, 09/05/2008 - 23:21 ET by Lame CherryBlogger Jeff Schreiber of America's Right was laughed at today by the Obama campaign when he phoned looking for a comment on the Phil Berg lawsuit.
The Obamaniac refused to identify theirself, but stated that the Washington Times newspaper, (Wes Prudin, Sol Sanders the finest of journalists) was not a paper worth commenting about and Obama would only address a paper like the New York or Los Angeles Times.
This is beyond getting old when Americans look to people like Doc Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly to Newsbusters to expose what is going on in laying some leather on Obama and the only person doing it is Sarah Palin and the no name bloggers like Mr. Schreiber and myself in exposing real stories and fraud.
Barack Obama is desiring to be president. He has not released one valid birth certificate nor explained how he was born at 2 hospitals. He released I was told ONE PAGE of his medical information.
With that kind of silence, Barack Obama could only get hired at a Tyson chicken factory plucking birds with illegal aliens.
Where is the call for his passport and his mother's passport records?
Where is the call for his personal associates like Bill Ayers the bisexual terrorist intelligence agent?
Where is the call to explain how he got into Pakistan?
Where is the call for his voting records?
Where is the call for the simplest of required information in a legal birth certificate?
Where is the call for a criminal Grand Jury investigation of Obama and Biden in the abuse and terrorism they have gone after Lawrence Sinclair over?
Barack Obama isn't the only silent one in this as it is the entire right wing media not making one peep. Now why in the world is that when all we get daily are fluff stories about how mean they are to Sarah Palin.
Currently I'm starting to feel just like when the Bush people told Conservatives in using them that they were to shut up and go away. I'm feeling like after the Conservatives sent that majority to Washington and all we got for it was gay Trent Lott sitting on his backside and the house not passing one Conservative vote.
I have heard Peggy Noonan caught and trying to explain things away and I have heard the silence of Limbaugh and all of the connected not doing one story of consequence.
I sent Rush Limbaugh and Joseph Farah my exclusive blog about Joe Biden stealing his "Iraq plan" from 2 Conservatives who wrote at the Washington Times and defrauded them and in intellectual theft had it voted on by the entire US Senate.
Now that is just a little bit wore as an impeachable offense than stealing an Irish liberals speech.
Know how much press that received? NONE from the very people who are the ones supposedly on the American's side. Drudge got it too but not one peep from him.
Barack Obama and Joe Biden at this point are more corrupt and criminal than the Clintons were. They have abused women, children, put the unborn in danger, slapped around an invalid from keeping him from his medications to taking away his medical benefits.
Beau Biden via his DAG Susan Dwyer in Delaware threatened to throw an American citizen into prison for life who was exposing Barack Obama for a misdemeanor. I have read her letter terrorizing that American.
For all of that, Joe Biden got the pay off of being Vice President.
Now that all looks like news and it is, but not one peep and I know FOX knows this story because Lawrence Sinclair talked to Greta in Washington DC.
So why is it this immense silence on the right allowing the immense silence of Barack Obama to continue?
Newsbusters certainly doesn't need any more stories about Whoopie being an idiot who can't spell or Joe Biden wearing a dress.
How about the suppressed stories and callers starting asking Limbaugh, Hannity, Ingraham, O'Reilly just why is it all of the right is making a big living off of all of Conservatives, but just can't seem to find time to interview Phil Berg, Lawrence Sinclair, track down what is going on in Hawaii, file a court brief for Obama's passport as he is trying to president or happens to get an interview with Bill Ayers or features the perverted writings of Frank Marshall Davis who in his semi autobiography stated he was sexing a 13 year old girl in Hawaii in the time Barry Obama was hanging around him as a mentor.
How about it Doc Limbaugh in asking as Frank Davis liked rape sequences, being pee'd on, bondage and bisexual sex that as Barack Obama's major people he was attracted to later were not just Marxists, but were bisexual in the same events Chicago historians have recorded as factual in that southside culture that Obama nestled himself into was exactly as Lawrence Sinclair described in his relations.
What did Frank Davis really do to Obama besides abuse him as Obama recorded in his own memoirs that Davis berated and bullied his grandfather, then told Obama that his white grandparents who were the only people in his life then would never understand him ever.
Obama stated he never felt so alone as a child that night as he left.
Ask Dr. Phil or any criminal sex unit investigator if an adult with Davis sexual perversions was sorting out a boy for something in that pyschological abuse.
Obama is silent and not one story, not one mention from the people who are making a very good living telling all of America that they are the voice of Conservatives.
Silence is golden apparently in keeping the secrets of Obama safe not only by him, but the entire right wing establishment.
Not one word and they know more of this story than I have released.

Obama IS a marxist/socialist. Listen to what he's said. And this WILL come out from conservative talk show hosts. Some of the stuff you stated, can't be proved. BUT, the stuff he did in Chicago, with fellow anti-american marxists CAN be proved. If you can find the entire Obama 101 show, you should watch it.
Palin has accomplished great things, while Obama has continued to make empty promises that the world owes you a living.
Let us hope McCain's performance records...

Some are starting to question his judgment on his VP pick and it could be explosive if the Pentagon supported this claim with his records.

Sat, 09/06/2008 - 21:58 ET by Free StinkerMy guess is that if the Obama campaign thought they had even a remote chance of getting those records, he would be far more cocky & arrogant than he has been behaving.
John McCain will be his own worst enemy these next two months leading up to the election.
seriously?
Sat, 09/06/2008 - 23:47 ET by mbuelObama is his own worst enemy and destroyed his presidential chances years ago when he allied with Ayers, Alinsky, and Wright.
Of course there are also his OWN words.

By the "some" questioning Sarah Palin's, you mean you? UberFakeCon.
The standard of lefty troll has really dropped on NB. Come back "hater" all could be forgiven.
Are you saying I need to hold on...
Sun, 09/07/2008 - 20:47 ET by...to the next elephant tail in front of me and follow it to the circus train, getting on and waiting for it to derail. No thanks. Wrong choice for the ticket...I've noticed no information by your recent postings...quips, sound bites, short phrases, insults, etc. seem to rule your thought processes.
For being English, I'm impressed with your attraction for American politics, do you have your own English political blog where Americans can do the same?
Also, this weird coupling with this musician, Mr. Shy, is...well...I'm sorry, I'll reserve comment...I do enjoy the tag teaming with Rog the Shrubber...for being an American, his shrub report is quite funny...as for you, have you thought of lightening up a little and being a little more positive?
Who are these people you keep referring to in your posts? Most are "access denied". Could you at least tell me why you are so "in the tank" for Sarah Palin? I would have thought for being English, you would have taken offense to the references to Thatcher.
