O'Reilly, Megyn Kelly Slam WaPo's Dana Milbank for Litany of Falsehoods in Anti-Fox Column

By Lachlan Markay | November 05, 2010 | 14:02

A  A

Fox News Channel hosts Bill O'Reilly and Megyn Kelly blasted far-left Washington Post columnist Dana Milbank yesterday for his apparent dishonesty in criticizing Fox's election night coverage.

"I think you and I should go beat him up," O'Reilly jested. Later in the segment, as Kelly preceeded criticism of Milbank by saying "with all due respect," O'Reilly interjected to say "you don't have to say 'with all due respect.' He doesn't deserve any."

In addition to hammering Milbank himself, O'Reilly singled out WaPo editorial page editor Fred Hiatt, who reportedly told O'Reilly that the paper would not take action against Milbank for supposed lies told in his column. "I just want everybody in American to know what the Washington Post has come to," O'Reilly said.

What were the two Fox anchors so upset about? They noted three specific claims by Milbank that they assert are untrue. The first is that Fox only brought one Democrat on air during its election night coverage: pollster Doug Schoen.

But, as O'Reilly noted in a segment Wednesday night, Fox also brought on Democrats Bob Beckel, Pat Caddell, Geraldine Ferraro, Kirsten Powers, Joe Trippi, and Juan Williams on Tuesday evening.

"Should Milbank be fired?" O'Reilly asked on Wednesday. Guest Bernie Goldberg claimed that Milbank, "like so many other journalists, have Foxophobia, they have an irrational fear of Fox News" (h/t to J$ for both videos).

Milbank also singled out Megyn Kelly in his column. Milbank claimed that when news came in that Rep. Barney Frank had defeated Republican challenger Sean Bielat, Kelly simply said "Alas," implying that she had openly expressed disappointment at Frank's victory. But the single-word quote was taken completely out of context, as Kelly pointed out on the "Factor." The full quotation clearly demonstrated that Kelly was not "cheerleading" for Bielat, as Milbank implied.

Milbank also objected - bizarrely - to Kelly saying "That's an interesting update" in reference to a Senate race in which the heavy Democratic favorite was facing a stronger challenge than expected.

"You got me there," Kelly quipped.

Newsbusters,

I am looking for an article at Newsbusters that sets the record straight about the $200 Million per day claim -- cost of Obama's India trip.

Please do the right journalistic thing, and not the partisan "right" thing. If you care about exposing media lies and inaccuracies, please address the story.

Everyone is speaking for the American People. It would be nice if there were journalistic integrity on both sides.

Kathy NB will do something on

Submitted by Dan The Man 2 on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 4:57pm.

Kathy NB will do something on it if it becomes an issue.  at the moment i personally dont care too much about it, traveling on the taxpayer dime for business is a Presidential perk.  And there are watchdogs who are supposed to monitor these expenses, so who knows what is going on with the 200 million a day.  200 million seems a bit much and im not sure if I see that being spent.

other than that whats your beef?

Kathy, NB is mainly about

Submitted by motherbelt on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 5:10pm.

Kathy, NB is mainly about media bias.  If the networks had excoriated President Bush for profligate spending on foreign trips, but was giving Obama a pass, that might..and I stress "might".... be the subject of blog.

I'm not sure what you want..did NB erroneously claim that Obama was spending $200 million, and you want that corrected?

There are always stories here about which someone will say "what does that have to do with media bias?" And there are always uncovered stories that someone (like you do here) will ask "Why aren't you covering this?"

I have personally sent several story tips  to the bloggers here: things that I thought should be addressed.   Some get covered, some don't.

You can't please everybody.

Where I'm coming from is

Submitted by kathy5319 on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 6:26pm.

Where I'm coming from is Newsbusters and others (right and left) who disingenously say they care about "truth" in the media... existing for sole purpose to "Expose lies" as one-sided partisan journalists.

Motherbelt... you wrote "NB is mainly about media bias"... NO, it is Not. And the motto of NB states it is attacking "liberal" media bias.

I understand this. But I am saying that without addressing stories like this one, and correcting the right when necessary, too, it seems absurd to care about facts at all.

It appears that NB does not have the cajones or the integrity to clear up the viral rumor mill about this ridiculous story about $200 mil a day coming from the right. And to Dan, this is a non-story, so please disregard... But Rush did not, nor did Michele Bachmann and the internets.

I did not say NB printed a false story regarding Obama's India trip expenses. I am saying they don't care about media bias.

And I realize this happens on the left as well. I am just stating my dissatisfaction with journalism, "watch dogs", gullability and the lack of honest dialogue and fact checking  that I think Americans genuinely crave, deserve? and need.

With respect, Kathy ...

Submitted by KC Mulville on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 7:07pm.

If you expect every media outlet to be the comprehensive Guardians of All Truth, well, I think you need to adjust your expectations. I reject the idea that a media outlet would ever dare claim to be the Guardian of All Truth. The very idea is obnoxious and pompous. The right of each individual to make those judgments for ourselves is at the core of what it means to be free.

You want a bunch of journalists to make those decisions for you? Not for me, thank you.

It's unrealistic for any media outlet to pretend to be a comprehensive watchdog of everything. Yes, I know that this is what most of them claim, but that's just the sales department trying to increase viewers. It isn't possible, and it's unreasonable to expect. It's like when the local news station claims to be the most trusted name in news; you hear it and dismiss it immediately. No one expects you to take that seriously. And, as a matter of fact, NewsBusters doesn't claim to be the comprehensive guardian of all truth everywhere.

So the idea that NewsBusters didn't catch every instance of bias, over and above the liberal media bias that they do catch, isn't an indictment against their integrity or male anatomy.

I only ask NewsBusters to be fair about the criticisms that they make; I don't expect them to make every possible criticism about every offense against truth.

With Respect back at you KC

Submitted by kathy5319 on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 9:49pm.

(Thank you for listening to this response)

I am not suggesting that NB needs to be the "Guardians of Truth" -- but this story was viral and being discussed all over the place. As the left and 'regular' media were debunking it, there were crickets from the right... or just the usual suspects Still insisting its truth.

I thought it would have been smart for NB to have debunked it, and in their best interests to do so.

I disagree that the public doesn't require news to have gone through some level of quality control... and I'm required to determine if a legitimate news agency has bothered to check the sources or claims of their source. (( I know you didn't really say this... but your logic comes close to it ))  Maybe I should just start my own agency and make stuff up. You can too!

To make matters worse, if one does try to get the skinny on certain topics, now sites such as Snopes etc. are demonized as "liberal" by the Right. At the same time there is a new narrative especially from the right that objective sources and fact checkers are liberal, biased and can't be trusted... such as...  Snopes!

Many on the right would not consider questioning this story if presented with debunking from left, the mainstream media, the White House response, Wall Street Journal etc. So, these folks are left to either look to Fox news, Right wing media, Glenn Beck to tell them if the story is true or not. You don't see a problem with that?

As for common sense.... see AngryWhitedude.com and the post concerning this rumor as propaganda? that will later be called satire (probably). And this from a Tea Party organizer? (AWD is Dallas Tea Pary organizer)  Guess the patriot company he keeps doesn't have much common sense. Notice the "Republican" poster who was ostracized for having... common sense to call this story utter bunk, in spite of his politics.

You Don't Own NB.

Submitted by Tenebrous on Sat, 11/06/2010 - 2:15am.

1) There are many, many stories that are viral and being discussed "all over the place". If it's not liberal media bias, it probably won't be covered here.

2) What you think are NB's best interests and what NB thinks are their best interests are different. See the headline. It's nice of you to tell them what their best interests are, or should be, though. I mean, isn't that what all the left has in mind -- our (economic) best interests? Excuse me, but I don't believe you.

You want NB to act on stories that you want them to act on, instead of doing what they do best -- discussing liberal media bias. Why hate the shoe because it's not a flower? I think you're really just angry that a successful site isn't under your thumb. Poor wannabe Mao. Maybe someday you'll be powerful enough to murder people at will. Until then you'll have to deal with your own powerlessness in other ways.

3) If you want the news go through some sort of vetting process, you want a government-controlled media. Your statism is showing.

4) Snopes is not demonized by the right. Snopes is exposed as being what it is -- a husband and wife team who have contributed to liberal causes. Their behavior on Obama's birth certificate calls their trustworthiness into question. That's not demonization, but thanks for playing.

5) I will not entertain accusations against other people on the basis of an overcontrolling, trolling liberal. If you want to convince people of your point of view, threadjacking and personal attacks will not do it. (Why are liberals so cluelessly rude?)

---- Let us all eviscerate the trolls and fill their carcasses with bile and venom.

Kathy ...

Submitted by KC Mulville on Mon, 11/08/2010 - 2:16am.

Sorry -  I was on a family trip this weekend, out of touch with the internet. (Was wonderful.)

For a long time, I've been posting about this core issue. "I disagree that the public doesn't require news to have gone through some level of quality control... and I'm required to determine if a legitimate news agency has bothered to check the sources or claims of their source."

Kathy, with great respect (you deserve it), I heartily disagree. The media should never be trusted. I strongly and constantly recommend caveat emptor.  "News" is a business, and news outlets sell their reporting to make money. Their sales pitch is that they report the truth, and they lacquer their sales with the myth of truthful objectivity. There's only one problem: it's impossible. Philosophy forbids it.

Consider.

  • In this case, we started with a report (on Drudge, I think) that the president was bringing 30+ ships, costing $200 million a day.
  • Poppycock! said an official source.
  • Your response: see? An official source denied it, so the reporter didn't fact check.

But wait. If an official source denied that we were still spying on the Russians, would you dismiss it as well? What if there was a report that the Chinese were aiding the Iranians, and an official source denied it? Would you have any way of proving it one way or the other? No.

You didn't trust Drudge, but you trusted the denial. Why? Because even though you don't have any personal way to verify it, the denial sounded more plausible to you. (I freely admit, the denial sounds more plausible to me too.) But wait!  The standard of trusting comes down to what sounds more plausible, even if neither you nor I have any way of proving it. "Plausibility" is always a completely subjective quality.

All news reports come down to the same issue. You, the news consumer, have no way of knowing independently if they're telling you the truth (if you already knew the truth without the reporter, logically, you wouldn't be depending on the reporter in the first place). So you have to go by plausibility, and that's always a completely subjective judgment.

And, by definition, the only way to defend yourself against your own subjectivity is caveat emptor. Be wary -- not because the reporter might intentionally deceive you (although that's possible also) but because you have to defend yourself against yourself. If you don't know the truth yourself, admit it -- don't presume you "know" something because someone else told you. Caveat emptor is self-defense.

Trusting the news media means that you think you can tell when they've reported the truth ... and that's a very dangerous self-delusion.

I pause for reply ...

The trouble is: the WH wont say what that trip IS costing.....

Submitted by merly1 on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 5:19pm.

People would love to know the tab for this jaunt......yet, it is cloaked in secrecy which is mindboggling. Obviously, the WH knows that 10-20 million per day wouldnt play any better on
main street, than 200 million per day.   Thus, the public cant learn what it deserves to know.
I do love the hypocrites whining "it is grossly inflated" but then wont tell people a ballpark figure.
More proof of everything that is wrong with this once great country!

Milbank jumped the snark

Submitted by KC Mulville on Fri, 11/05/2010 - 4:14pm.

Some people are only funny to other people who are as biased as they are.

If I told a black joke when I was surrounded  by racists, the racists might think that I was hilarious. If I told the same joke around blacks, I might get a different reaction. Same with sexist jokes, or any jokes that depend on sharing the same prejudice.

Milbank is a liberal bigot. His humor is only funny to people with the same liberal prejudice.
