Maher to King: Religion is 'Detrimental' and 'the Ultimate Hustle'

It’s no secret that Bill Maher, the host of the HBO show "Real Time with Bill Maher," loathes religion. He came under fire earlier this year for slandering Pope Benedict XVI.

On Tuesday night, CNN’s Larry King gave Maher another chance to smack Christianity, which Maher called “detrimental” and “the ultimate hustle.”

Maher was on "Larry King Live"  to promote his latest vehicle, the film "Religulous," which is due to open October 3. "Religulous," which reportedly takes aim at all religions, was supposed to be released around Easter of this year.  It had been called a documentary previously but Maher is now selling it as a comedy.  Larry King opened his interview with Maher by praising the movie but noted that it will offend people.

KING: OK. It's no secret that you deal with religion a lot. And you have a new movie coming called Religulous. I saw that movie. It's  really well done. Now, it will offend -- I think it will offend the deeply religious people. Those on the border -- certainly, agnostics are going to love it. Atheists are going to love it. But there's a lot of open religious people who would just appreciate it as a very funny movie.

MAHER: Right. You don't have to agree with it, I think, to laugh.

Maher loves to laugh at religion and religious believers, especially Christians.  In his one-hour interview with King, in which he talked about politics and religion (see other Newsbusters postings here and here), he commented on the recent presidential forum hosted by evangelical pastor Rick Warren on August 16.

MAHER:  … certainly in political life (religion has) had a terribly detrimental effect. I mean, did you see the Rick Warren thing?

KING: Sure. And we had him on last night.

MAHER: Yes, right. And by the way, let me just preface this by saying I'm asking people for perspective. I have it also.  Rick Warren, big improvement over Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell. If we have to have a pope of the super Christ-ies, I'd rather it be him. He's got good ideas about actually, you know -- actually helping people. Because you know, one thing I don't like about religion is that, you know, ask any of the truly devout. It's not mainly about doing the right thing or being ethical. It's mainly about salvation. It's mainly about getting your butt saved when you die. And that's why I think they're less moral than ethicists.

When the interview turned specifically to the film, Maher admitted that he wanted to arouse atheists and agnostics so they would stand up and make themselves heard, presumably in the upcoming election.  Maher stated that 16 percent of the population are “rationalists” who outnumber blacks, Jews, homosexuals and NRA members.

While Maher has said "Religulous" takes aim at all faiths, Christians took it on the chin during King’s show, which played two clips from the movie.  The first was an interview with Arkansas Sen. Mark Pryor (D) on the topic of evolution.  The editing makes Pryor look foolish.

MAHER: Do you believe in evolution?

PRYOR: You know, my -- first, I don't know. Clearly, the scientific community is a little divided on some the specifics of that, and I understand that.

MAHER: I don't think they are.

PRYOR: No, well, I...

MAHER: I think they pretty much agree.

PRYOR: I don't know how it all happened. I mean, I'm certainly willing to...

MAHER: Could it possibly have been Adam and Eve 5,000 years ago with a talking snake in the garden? Could it?

PRYOR: Well, it could have possibly been that.

MAHER: Come on. This is my problem, because I'm trying -- I mean, you're a senator. You are one of the very few people who are really running this country. It worries me that people are running my country who think, who believe in a talking snake.

PRYOR: You don't have to pass an IQ test to be in the Senate, though. [Video cuts to Maher then cuts to Pryor whose smile disappears as he stares at Maher.]

The second clip was from Maher’s trip to Holy Land, a Bible-themed amusement park in Orlando, Florida.  The clip opens with a scene of an actor dressed as Jesus dancing on a stage.  Maher then interviews the actor.

ACTOR: How you doing, Bill? God bless you.

MAHER: Hi.

ACTOR: Seen you around.

MAHER: Having no other gods before you, that's not moral. There's nothing moral about that. It's just -- it's just something a jealous god would do.

ACTOR: It does say that our God is a jealous God.

MAHER: But your god is jealous? That seems so un-godlike that God would have such a petty human emotion.

ACTOR: He's also...

MAHER: I know people who have gotten over jealousy, let alone God.

ACTOR: There's two sides of the coin. He's a just God, and he's also a merciful God.

MAHER: The first five books are about wiping out people.

ACTOR: That’s what He chose to do. His ways are higher than ours, Bill.

MAHER: Maybe our thinking should be higher.

ACTOR: That's a good point.

Who knows if the actor portraying Jesus realized he’d been set up?  After the clip ended, an incredulous Larry King asked Maher to describe Holy Land.  Maher used the term “crass commercialization.”

Maher channeled his own inner “talking snake” when he closed the interview with an astounding bit of forked-tongue doublespeak.

MAHER:So we're not trying to point fingers in this movie. I think we do it -- we're laughing all the way through it. I think we're winking and having a good time, and we're not trying to be judgmental. But at some point, you know, mankind is going to have to shed this skin if he's going to move forward. I do have a serious intellectual problem with it.  And on another level it just ticks me off. It's just the ultimate hustle. It's just "pay no attention to the man behind the curtain." You know, why can't they, I always ask -- I asked Jesus at Holy Land, "Why can't God just defeat the devil and get rid of evil?"  You know, and it's the same reason the comic-book character can't get rid of his nemesis. Then there's no story. If God gets rid of the devil -- and he could, he's all powerful -- well, then there's no fear. There's no reason to come to church. There's no reason to pass the plate. We're all out of a job. You know, it's got to go on.

Yeah. Not judgmental at all.

King urged his viewers to see the movie when it opens this fall.

Hmmm... If Bill Maher

Hmmm... If Bill Maher doesn't believe in Jesus, then why is he so angry at Him? Maybe it is because God has "set eternity in the hearts of men..." (Ec 3:11)  Bill Maher is without excuse.  Let's keep praying for his salvation.

Romans 1: 18 - 32

18 The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness,

19 since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. 20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen. 26 Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. 28 Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. 29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 31 they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. 32 Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

"Hmmm... If Bill Maher

"Hmmm... If Bill Maher doesn't believe in Jesus, then why is he so angry at Him?"

I would not say Bill Maher is upset at Jesus himself. He is upset at some Christians. The ones that create sodomy laws. The ones that tell you what to wear, What is moral and what is not..

Sounds like this is a really offensive film and I don't agree with it. Just like I do not agree with much of what Ann Coulter says, I believe in her freedom of speech.

The movie has not come out yet, but I doubt Mr. Maher will have the stones to insult Muslims as much as Christians, which I find cowardly

Real life video games are cool

You see Shawn

Now if there's a Christian film making fun of all the people who die painful, horrible deaths and suffer serious maiming as a result of their immoral behavior, I guess Maher has no problem with that either?

Let's start out with the high school kid in a wheelchair. It's a real knee slapper. Oh, sorry, kid in wheelchair, really I hardly noticed. I mean, the blanket and all.

That's how hateful Maher is. Coulter doesn't come close.

I ♣ my seal

Kid in a wheelchair?

I must have missed that one cool.

"He that is not with me is

"He that is not with me is against me" - Jesus Christ. There is so much wrong with what you said Shawn it is hard to know where to begin. But we've had this conversation before. Bottom line, the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ made this universe and all that is contained therein. He has the sole authority to make the laws which should govern our lives. It is He that has decreed that Sodomy is an abomination, not any believer. Bill Maher hates the Lord Jesus Christ and anything regarding the truth. If he did not, then he would not say the things he says nor do the things he does. "He that is not with me is against me" - that's rather exclusive. Narrow is the way that leadeth unto life and few there be that find it.

"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house." Acts 16:31

Christianity and the rest of America

Yes according to Christianity sodomy is an abomination, the thing is the reason why so many people came and come to American is to escape religious prosectution.

You are a firm believer of God, but not everyone shares your faith and people should not force views on others.

Real life video games are cool

shawn

is it your view that:

"people should not force views on others."

?????

"You can not support the Troops if you do not support their Mission"

come on Bruce

We have been through this debate more times than I can remember. I don't believe in forcing my views on anyone as long as they don't effect anybody else.

I was also making a point to the poster that because he wants to live is life as a Christian, why is it so important to outlaw sodomy when it does not effect him at all?

Real life video games are cool

and yet you persist Shawn

why do you attempt to eliminate his view when it does not effect you at all?

"You can not support the Troops if you do not support their Mission"

Bruce

I'm not eliminating is view. I was giving him an example. Sodomy is nobodys business let alone the governments.

how was dinner?

"You can not support the Troops if you do not support their Mission"

Bruce

Lol, pretty sure this is not a trick question. Dinner was so so....too tired to cook, so roasted chicken from Safeway, Microvave frozen broccoli, and rice.  Hardly gourmet. thx for asking :-)

Make like Indiana Jones and run away while you can still see daylight.

You don't want me getting involved do you?

:p

Candance

I always want you involved :-) Unless your scolding me off course. If I was Indiana Jones, I just have to remember that Jehovah is spelled with an I.

there are no vowels in Hebrew??

Do you remember when Indy had to walk the letters of God? He forgot Jehovah was spelt with an I and almost fell to his death.

Real life video games are cool

nope

didn't see it!! i should be a fact-checker for hollywood though

"You can not support the Troops if you do not support their Mission"

Jehovah spelt with an I

I don't think it was Hebrew, I believe  it was Latin

Real life video games are cool

ah ha

I may have found an answer.

In Latin the I used to make a Y sound but was gradually changed as the language grew.

That's a very obscure detail though and would place the correct spelling inside a very specific time frame of European history.

huh?

I don't remember that scene (been eons since I saw the movie) but that makes no sense.

I can't think of any context where God's name has an I in it. The base of God's name is four letters that translate into YHWH, which is where we get "Yahway" or JHWH which where we get "Jehovah."

The word Adonai means "the Lord" which doesn't really count as God's name.

The only other option is where God said "I am that I am."

*scratches head*

Candance

For an Indiana Jones fan, I'm surprised you forgot the scene. It is dubbed over in Italian, but here is the scene.

Real life video games are cool

sorry

I'm really not that big of a fan - I just remember watching the movies with my parents as a kid. I haven't watched the original ones for years.

shawn, "chedder and sour cream Ruffles?"

LOL-Dude, those'll kill you!

But what a way to go, eh?

Just make sure you have a for-real charcoal-grilled cheeseburger in the other hand when they find your carcass.

-And a half-empty bottle of a decent beer within reach would be a bonus.  :-)

Heck, that is how I hope I go.

a couple comments in reply to shawn228

1. Morality is not relative.  If morality was dependent upon individual point of view, then it would not be morality.  Moral relativism is a self-contradictory (and thus false) concept.

2. God Himself has given us commands, ones that "tell you what is moral and what is not."  Christians did not "invent" sodomy laws.  Nor did Christians invent standards of modest dress -- all cultures from the dawn of history have standards of modest dress.  We only differ on the details.

3. I'll agree that Maher is angry at Christians, and perhaps some of it may even be justifiable.  But to point to "bad" Christians and use that as your intellectual basis against Christianity constitutes a logical fallacy called an ad hominen attack.

4. I agree that this sounds like a really offensive film -- indeed, I am already offended by it, and by its free MSM advertising courtesy of MSM atheist-biased talking head Larry King.  You won't see my wife or I patronizing it with our hard earned cash.  I recommend all present to abstain.  Don't atrophy your mind -- stay home.

5. I agree 100% with your last comment.  He, and others like him, are indeed cowards.

Maher has gone past

Maher has gone past ridicule into downright hatred. And in his hatred he lashes out with stupid things like a "talking snake." He misses the point that whether it was a snake, or they ate an apple (or was it a peach?) doesn't matter...it was that they disobeyed God.

And Bill, God did create a world without evil (the Garden). Adam and Eve brought in evil by their sin.

What Maher apparently wants is for God to make the world perfect so that everyone can do what they want and never suffer any consequences.

just cries for help really

Bill just can't accept that God loves him so very much

because Bill can't love himself

humanity's problem in a nutshell

Bill is quite the extreme example

people like him feel extremely convicted by the concept of sin

he feels the shame inside, but can't cop to it on the outside

he cant' admit "I'm a wretched sinner, I need someone to save me because I can't possibly do it on my own, I need Jesus..."

instead, for now, he will continue to lash out

if he's lucky, someday he will hit bottom, and grow tired of the misery

walk towards the light, Bill!

resistance is pretty danged stupid really

Journalism is the opium of the liberals

I disagree. It's not that

I disagree. It's not that he can't love himself, it's that he loves himself above all else. That is the problem with mankind as a whole.

When asked if he went to war with Iraq to derail the impeachment vote: “I don’t think any serious person would believe that any President would do such a thing." - President Clinton (Dec 1998).

nope - fundamental

nope - fundamental Christianity sez that loving people don't act the way Bill does - he's the exact opposite right now - he's a selfish person instead of a self-loving person...

and if you can't love yourself, you can't love anybody...

that's the Bible's take anyway...

love your neighbor as you love yourself...

Journalism is the opium of the liberals

Yes, but the Bible does not

Yes, but the Bible does not say "love the Lord your God as yourself."  Love of God is first, followed by love of self and love of neighbor.  Bill Maher doesn't even believe God exists.

With athiests it's all about this life. period.

Ask Maher...what happens if there is no 'devil' or Satan? Will evil really be gone? No. Because people are capable of evil all by them selves. It's all about choice Bill. You can certaintly understand that, right? I mean you agree that all women should have the choice to kill their unborn babies if they decide that they don't want it, right? So GOD allows us to make a choice. To actually have a choice there must be two viable alternatives. Therefore evil exists. Just like dark cannot exist without light. Satan is not there to perpitrate evil, he's there because he wants to fool you into making the wrong choice.

If you had become a homeless vagrant walking the streets of NY and denying that you had a mother and a father, your parents would still love you despite the choice that you made. Just as your "Father" in heaven loves you even now, despite your rejection of him.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

Just as your "Father" in heaven loves you even now, despite your rejection of him.

Well said, c5. As Paul wrote to Timothy:

... if we deny him, he will deny us. If we are unfaithful, he will remain faithful,
for he cannot deny himself"
(2 Tim 2:13).

He will quickly pray to God

He will quickly pray to God late some night when he is pulled over on Hollywood Blvd with a stash of cocaine and a pretty 14 year old boy in his car.

Too Obsessive

Maher is an idiot.  "What you resist, persists."  There are more troubles in the world than whether people believe in a high being or not.  He'll see how "Detrimental" religion is when he is being judged for his sins just like the rest of us. I'm sure the word going through his head at that time will be one frequented by Homer Simpson, "D'oh!"

"Why can't God just defeat

"Why can't God just defeat the devil and get rid of evil?" You know, and it's the same reason the comic-book character can't get rid of his nemesis. Then there's no story. If God gets rid of the devil -- and he could, he's all powerful -- well, then there's no fear"

Now that's just a stupid comment. I vacillate between agnostic and aetheist, but it's certainly a very weak point and a cheap shot that he made.

Bill, why can't liberals just defeat conservatives and be done with it? I mean you're all so much smarter than us gun-clinging, bible-toting rubes in the flyover states, right? It should be easy, like selling the amazing "Sham-Wow" to dullard TV watchers with available credit on their credit cards. Candy from a baby, right Bill?

Bill Maher

If you do not belive in a diety, were does you moral base come from?

Does Bill really want all Christians to become atheists?  Trust me when I say, that if I was brainwashed to belive there was nothing to life but the here and now, I would turture Bill to death, rape his wife, and sell his kids as sex slaves.  And why not, whats to stop me?

In the world of atheists, mite is right, and he who is strongest rules!

I really don't think Bill Maher would lke it, if all people of faith, gave up there faith, and released themselves to the darkness within them.

For atheists and even

For atheists and even agnostics, it's not the answer that they care about, it's the concept behind the question they are asking.  They merely shield it with a question so as to spark anger and controversy... and try to make you question your own morals.  I thank God that I am strong enough on my faith to not be moved by such slander.

Not to start an argument,

because I do not agree with Bill, nor do I find fault with a religious moral base or those who find comfort or direction within religion, but I have to chime in...

My moral base (I'm close to aetheist, but not fully) comes from the belief that the best way to have an enjoyable life for me here on earth, my kids and my community is to treat people as I would like to be treated.  I know, it's a selfish approach, but it IS a moral base, and very very closely parallels most religious guidelines/precepts/commandments as far as I can tell.  But then, I'm not very studied in religion.  Grew up without it and never had a calling to find it.

I suspect that the commandments (at least 5/4 through 10) arose over many milenia out of a recognition of realities of societal living.  Such as, "gee, if I mess around with my neighbors wife, and he finds out, he may just come and club me on the head, just like what happened to Og, when he coveted Ug's woman.  I don't want that to happen to me".  Rules that apply for a peaceful coexistance of people within a society eventually morphed into dictates from the being that makes the sun rise and the crops grow, because SOMETHING makes that happen that ancient peoples didn't understand.

Slightly off-topic, but I had ten minutes to spare...:^)

You been taught by Atheists, whols

The truth of the matter is that these Moral Laws were given to us by God and have existed since the beginning of time.

They are self-evident, as is the existence of God. (Rom 1)

Go to a church sunday school class of little kids and you'll see there are no atheistic children, they know God exists by instinct.

Sadly most of us go to a Public School system that has as a number one goal, keep God out, deny The Christ.  The books that are used in public schools have been repeatedly scrubbed to remove any hint of religion in our history and yet, educators know that if they want little Johnny or Julie to listen up and do what they are told there has to be a moral base to the teachings.

So, just like 12-step programs designed to appeal to "everyone", God has been stripped out and we get these "moral" laws in a vacuum like we thought of them ourselves.  This has been taught and repeated so much in our culture that people believe they are capable of coming up with moral laws themselves.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.

I think your point of selfishness is well put, I did it for years myself.  We are mostly people pleasers, which is a major reason Conservatives can never stick entirely up for themselves because the mere act of standing up for Jesus, or even Conservative principles gets you instant ridicule by an athiestic education system and media.

You are correct that these action have defineable and repeatable consequences which is what demonstrates their validity, in the bible God promises the consequences of our sinful actions and we as Christians merely tell and warn people of the judgement to come.

The iron of course is that telling someone there is no sin and they are "good" people is far more judgemental, in a negative sense, then doing a bible study with someone and letting them see they are lost.

People like Bill Maher want to eradicate anyone in the world who will remind them that they are wretched sinners, because if he really didn't think what he was doing was wrong, he would view Christians as inconsequential and not worthy of his time.  Instead he has dedicated his life to slandering people of faith and counter-evangeism.

WIJG

Many decades ago, C. S. Lewis (himself an atheist convert to Christianity) proposed some very good arguments against materialist rationalizations for morality.  Taking your example for the commandment against adultery, while it may be true that refraining from adultery may have spared you a confrontation with another male stronger than yourself (the "self-preservation instinct"), and it may also be good for tribal/community stability and strength (the "herd instinct"), Lewis very ingeniously pointed out that there is, nevertheless, a "third voice," one that says you ought to refrain, because it is simply wrong, a irrevocable sin against a fellow human being.

"I asked Jesus at Holy

"I asked Jesus at Holy Land, "Why can't God just defeat the devil and get rid of evil?"

Let's assume that there really is a God.  And to cure the problem of evil, he used his powers to do away with evil...all forms of evil and suffering.  If God did this, then Bill would be complaining about the power of GOOD.  "God, why can't I have some of that cocaine?  God, why won't you let me say sarcastic, hateful things about that person? and so forth and so forth...

Bill Maher-on

Maher approaches religion from the vantage point of a 5 year old child.

I have to add this -- my parent's are devout Catholics and they pray the rosary every day.  I had an opportunity to pray it with them recently (something I know I should do more of) and the prayer's never once were about saving their own butt.  They were about praying for the souls of others and asking forgiveness for their shortcomings and focusing on the miracles they, as Catholics, believe in.  I believe in the miracles too, it is just that I am not a practicing Catholic.

Still, pointless to waste anymore air on this subject.

I'm sorry Roger but it does. It falls within that same basket of things that are mainly liberal on one side and conservative on the other.

The great majority of Christians tend to be conservatives; it just goes together with conservatism and the great majority of people that hold Christianity in contempt tend to be liberals.

AND THE BOTTOM LINE IS THAT, the liberal MSM will play the liberal bias in favor of the anti-Christian liberals every time.

Thats what it has to do with liberal bias.

Serious versus laughing

When Maher asked a question about evil, did he go to a trained theologian? A bishop? A canon lawyer? Even a local minister, priest, or rabbi?

No. He went to a Jesus actor at an amusement park.

As always, Maher creates strawmen to conquer. He rails against the most adolescent view of religion. He thinks he's advancing the topic here? Atheists and agnostics are supposed to cheer this? He wants us to take his perspective seriously, but he never challenges anyone who can fight back. He's a media bully, using a camera to ridicule.

He's trying to draw a serious conclusion without having to face any serious argument. It's an intellectual cheat. He resorts to juvenile mocking tactics because he knows he can't handle a serious argument. As is his typical style, he wants to be a punk smartass instead of risking a honest discussion.

I know why the film was postponed. No one wanted to see it. Does Maher really think that adults will say, "hey honey, let's go see the comedian discuss religion?"

KC

Totally spot on.

Egh, I guess he's not so bad...

I'm not much a fan of Bill but every once in awhile he does something I like, that being his stance on religion in this case.

I doubt he fears any side in this discussion.

Look at it this way, it's

Look at it this way, it's one less person in line for the Pearly Gates.

Maybe our thinking should

Maybe our thinking should be higher.

Maybe like Mao or Stalin?  We've tried to govern without paying lip-service to the Almightly in the last century.  Over 100 million dead.  Billions turned into serfs.  More casualties produced in 70 years than in the previous 7,000.  How's that for "higher thinking?"  We're not even counting the conflicts of the "enlightment" such as the Napoleonic Wars.

Face it - more people have suffered and died in the name of atheism than have ever in the name of God.

Yeah, let's all just let go of the quaint notion of our "Sky God."  Great idea.

Who cares what Bill Maher thinks?

This tool had a show called "Political Incorrect" but was nothing but!  I cancelled HBO because of his show.  He is completely uninspired and bitter.  It is obvious that he is a pathetically sad individual.  Liberalism does that to people.  Nothing is pure and nothing is sacred.

It's not religion they

It's not religion they hate, it's God.

God isn't interested in religion, he's interested in a relationship based on faith.

Maher and his ilk are very religious in their belief system - which is secular self-worship (the oldest religion in the universe - "I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High." - Lucifer; re: Isa. 14:14).
