During an interview with Larry King, Bill Maher went on a diatribe about the stupidity of the American people, because he is dumbfounded by 2/3 of Americans who believe that offshore drilling will bring gas prices down. King, not realizing he was about to insult the average caller who phones into his show each evening along with the millions who watch him in his own audience, simply asked Maher if he agreed with essayist H.L. Menken who said, “No one ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people.”

August 20, 2008 - 17:59 ET by UndercoverConservativeby making decisions based on flash, emotions, or knee jerk reaction is called "intelligence" to liberals. Look at their idols-movie stars, fancy advertised products..they think of themselves as "intellignet" and "worldly" because they automatically reject any thought, methodology or ideology that's customary. If it's an old way of doing things, get rid of it. Think about the children! ban anything scary...
which means the opposite for them is true. Planning, research, truth, consideration before reacting, using your brain, logic...these things therefore must be the opposite of "intelligence".
So yeah, not being a knee jerk reacting, madison avenue controlled, tree worshipping, america hating, drug using, no brain thinking twit means you're "stupid". And common sense is a "bad" thing. Also, having any long term memory or a set of consistent morals , also not a "good liberal" trait.
Look to the social experiments of subsidizing poverty, and promoting slave-class illegal immigration, and givin criminals more rights than law abiding folks-decades these attitudes were tried in good faith, but they've been proven failed, but that doesn't keep the same stupid attitudes from growing and becoming even deeper seated policy at all levels of government.

Of course, you can be educated and not be very smart. I'm referring to educated liberals who are adamant that:
1. Bush lied us into an unjust war
2. We and the people of Iraq would be better off if Sadam Hussein was still in power.
3. Along with Harry Reid (and Barry Hussein Obama) that "this war is lost, and this surge is not accomplishing anything ..."

August 20, 2008 - 23:32 ET by Rush FanI couldn’t agree with you more, and your analogy is on the mark. That’s why it amazes me that the race is still so close, and when the election is held, half of the voters will probably vote for Barry Obama, just as they voted for traitor-to-the-military John Kerry (who by the way served in Vietnam). Now if that isn’t foolish and unintelligent I don’t know what is.
Rush Limbaugh provided one reason for Obama’s popularity on his show today: “The Democrats live in a world of fakery, fraudulent phoniness. We live in a world of reality. For example, liberals will fall, did fall hook, line, and sinker for the John Edwards story. Those of us on the other side in politics saw a fraud from the get-go. At the same time, the Drive-Bys and the libs and the Democrats have fallen for the Obama story. And then a genuine story of war heroism in a prisoner of war camp in Vietnam is said by the libs to be a fake one. They support fakes, they nominate fakes, they promote and market fakes, and they look at real stories and condemn them as fakes.”

the americans the MSM talk to aren't that smart
August 20, 2008 - 18:29 ET by UndercoverConservativethe MSM loves the image of the Stupid American. They interview only the dumbest, most short sighted people they can find. They make shows to elevate the mediocre.
But don't make the misake that the "stupid Americans" that you see promoted by the MSM is any more accurate or true representation of the whole of America, than any other presentation of any other issue. Global Warming, leftist politics, losing the war in Iraq...all of these BS spin issues are known by NB members to be a crock of shite at the very least. You can count on it that the Stupid American myth is just the same. This is all part of the attempt to legitimize the revocation of Democracy andpersonal choice/responsibility. Media tells us we're all to stupid to handle our retirement, our money, our health, our environment. And conveniently, the Liberals are right there offering to "help" while treating themselves as elite and talking to us with condescending tones. A Coincidence? "Don't You Believe It!"
The problem is, the minority of stupid people are in charge. In charge of Politics, the Media, and Entertainment. Even Business. They can't handle the idea that there are people much smarter than themselves, so they do everything they can to make their "subjects" appear even more clueless than themselves-helps their egos as well as their agendas. Because even smart people can fall victim to a consistent, overwhelming and long term propaganda assault.
We're not quite to "Idiocracy" yet. Until you get to the State and Federal capitals, anyways.

Larry King is still King
August 20, 2008 - 14:42 ET by whatajoyI like watching LKL because he gives his guests opportunities to speak without overtalking them and arguing with him like my favorite shows on Fox News. Most of what Larry says is not scripted, so it's bound to happen that he slips up every now and then. So I have nothing bad to say about Larry King.
However, Bill Maher is a joke and he's nothing more than a stand-up comic with an opinion. Maher seems to think he knows more than everyone else and is the end-all-say-all in politics. He pokes fun at everyone, but in the end, he doesn't sway anyone to one belief or another. No one takes what he says seriously. It's all a joke. So Larry King was just playing along, making his guest feel comfortable on his show. Bill brings in ratings due to his delusional antics and sense of humor. That's it. End of story.

Stupid...
August 20, 2008 - 15:29 ET by 3strikesImagine if this were an argument over food.
Food prices continue to rise because the demand for food continues to go up while the supply remains stagnant.
Food production hits 80% import, while only 20% is produced domestically.
Worldwide 86 million tons of food is consumed daily while only 84 million tons are produced per day.
Dictator governed countries account for 20% of our imported food needs, and can easily cut that supply in half or more on a whim.
Speculators, seeing a money making opportunity, buy as many food stores as they can and hold those stores as long as possible betting that food supplies will continue to dwindle and thus raising demand and prices even more.
One major political party holds up more domestic production of food, in favor of "alternatives."
There is an easy solution to counter all of this. PRODUCE MORE FOOD!!!! Opening up more federal lands for food production would have an immediate effect. The threat of more domestic supply flooding the market would immediately cause a sell off by speculators. No speculator is going to be willing to hold on to their food stores and lose their profit, or even worse lose their initial investment. The lowering of bulk prices would lead to regional and local sellers to lower their prices in an attempt to defeat their competition. Producing more domestic supplies would also lower our dependency on foreign sources which would make us less susceptible to the whims of foreign dictators. It would also put pressure on those foreign sources to produce more themselves or be unable to compete when domestic sources do come online.
It would be completely nonsensical to claim that, "we can't plant our way out of this," or even worse place yet another tax on the profits of those food producers to invest in unproven food "alternatives." Yet, this is the very thing that Liberals are trying to do with oil.
The fact that so many Liberals actually believe what Bill Maher and his ilk are shoveling, just goes to show that despite all of their education and training, intelligence is a rare commodity among leftists.

But the results won't be seen until next years crops come in...
August 21, 2008 - 09:55 ET by kirch66So the mantra would go: because the crops would have to be planted and grown and harvested and the livestock would have to be born and raised from the low levels we currently have, we wouldn't see the benefits of the newly produced food for at least another year! What good will that do NOW?!? It's useless to produce any new domestic food unless we can get it to the table next week!
This short sighted political power mongering by the left will keep us all paying higher prices for EVERYTHING that depends on gas to produce and deliver it until the people wise up and realize they are being played like a cheap harmonica by liberals who have a social agenda to force on us all, regardless of how much it costs us all.
Anyone who doesn't see that is either blind, stupid or part of the agenda.
Everyone in the MSM seems to have missed (intentionally ignored?) the fact that almost immediately after Bush rescinded the executive order banning offshore drilling, the price of oil per barrel dropped several dollars within a couple of days. This was due the SPECULATION (hello McFly!) involved in the price of oil. The fact that there COULD be more potential oil added in the FUTURE (i.e. speculation) caused the speculators to speculate that the supply would be greater, hence the price would go down, hence the immediate price went down. Does no one in the media have a clue about supply and demand economics? This is elementary stuff, my 4 year old can understand!

Oil Speculation did not drop prices Supply and Demand Did
August 22, 2008 - 02:44 ET by PopularTechSpeculators react to market events. Bush announcing his lifting of the offshore oil ban does not mean their will be drilling in the future because Congress has to lift the ban too. Speculators are aware of this. It was China's reduced demand and Saudi Arabia's increased supply which caused the prices to go down.

I guess Maher considers me stupid for even thinking there might be a correlation between Chevron's announcement on September 5, 2006 and the following drop in oil prices of 7.8 percent.
I'm pretty sure that Maher would summarily dismiss this type of correlation, because it doesn't fit into his particular view of the world and how he thinks things should work.

Lefties want acres and acres of windmills, yet their own loony environMENTAList wackos will sue to stop the construction of power lines to get the electricity to the cities!! The lefties are nuts because they scream about overpopulation, yet sue McDonald's for selling unhealthy food!!! AGHHHHH!!

August 20, 2008 - 20:34 ET by mswsocialworkI think Mr. Maher makes very legitimate points about the intelligence of the American people.
Most can't name who the Prime Minister of Great Britain is. Most don't know that the Democrats have the majority in the House and Senate.
Besides, America hates intellectuals. We will always choose someone that we can have a beer with (like the guy who owns 8 houses and wears $520 Ferragamo loafers).
Like the guy who graduated in the bottom 1% of the Naval Academy and then managed to crash 5 planes and surrender.
BTW...Why won't Senator McCain sign Standard Form 180?

August 20, 2008 - 21:31 ET by fitzfongI think Mr. Maher makes very legitimate points about the intelligence of the American people.
Maybe he'd have "legitimate points about the intelligence of the American people" if he was directing these points at the correct "American people"...but he's not directing them at the ignorant, arrogant libs.
Most can't name who the Prime Minister of Great Britain is. Most don't know that the Democrats have the majority in the House and Senate.
If they can't name the Prime Minister of Great Britain, they can thank the imbeciles running the public schools into the ground...the Teacher Unions. Unfortunately, we all know that the Democrats have the majority in both Houses of Congress. Since Stretch Pelosi and Land Scam Reid assumed leadership, their anti-American, anti-business, pro-Socialism, "environmental" agenda has doubled gas prices and brought the economy near recession.
Besides, America hates intellectuals. We will always choose someone that we can have a beer with (like the guy who owns 8 houses and wears $520 Ferragamo loafers).
America doesn't hate intellectuals. America resents self-absorbed pseudo-intellectuals in Hollywood, academia and the press...people who don't have a stake in the economy, who don't have a clue about how to create jobs, promote business or build an economy yet act like they are the ultimate authorities on all such subjects. Besides for all the empty rhetoric about the Republican Party being the "party of the rich", I sure read a lot of articles complementing Nancy Pelosi's expensive, "tastefully-tailored" dress sense in contrast to the "rumpled" appearance of Dennis Hastert. The $520 Ferragamos are typically the trappings of a Democrat's "obscene" wealth, not those of a Republican's.
Like the guy who graduated in the bottom 1% of the Naval Academy and then managed to crash 5 planes and surrender.
True, our Party has claim to an actual war hero...as opposed to some clown who may have secured Purple Hearts through self-inflicted "accidents". But focusing on McCain's academic qualifications is a bit rich given that your party is very close to nominating an admitted plagiarist who tried to claim he finished top of his law school class when he finished bottom as Obama's running mate (and that your most worshipped Senatorial icon got kicked out of Harvard for having someone else take his...get this...Spanish test...and that was before he got away with drowning a campaign aid).
But you're right, Bill Maher has a point

August 20, 2008 - 21:56 ET by mswsocialworkWill Senator McCain ever sign it?
Wow! Way to miss the forest
August 20, 2008 - 22:06 ET by RESTLESS 1Wow! Way to miss the forest for the trees there. You ARE a good little liberal troll.

Please. Enlighten us.
August 20, 2008 - 23:55 ET by fitzfongPlease. Enlighten us. What is the significance of "Standard Form 180"? If, as you suggest, John McCain has not signed "Standard Form 180", what is the practical meaning of that? What would it mean to you if he did sign it? I smell talking points...

August 21, 2008 - 00:16 ET by Cool ArrowSociaworker is asking if McCain will release his military records so she can find out if he ratted out any of his buddies to the VC when they broke his arms and legs.
You see, socialworker wants to compare McCain's piddly little stint at the Hanoi Hilton with the grueling ordeal John Kerry went through in three entire months on a Swiftboat.
I'm thinking socialworker spent a lot of time in the corner back in "Masters School"
Of course there's always the possibility she earned it the hard way.

She's out googling Webster's online to prove she didn't spell "Master's Degree" wrong.
It's the equivalent of putting her in a round room and telling her to pee in the corner.

That would be primarily due to the fact that our schools were taken over by the government five decades ago, and have been run by liberals like you ever since.

You tend to make his point

You do tend to make his point for him due to the rather low level of intelligence you display in your post.
"Most can't name who the Prime Minister of Great Britain is"
Most Americans don't live in Great Britain so this information is merely trivia to us.
"Most don't know that the Democrats have the majority in the House and Senate."
Don’t know, or won’t admit? Refer to their approval ratings before answering. Being the majority in Congress right now isn’t really something to be proud about and Americans tend to make themselves forget about the most embarrassing aspects of our leaders.
"Besides, America hates intellectuals."
No, we don’t. We respect intellectuals. What we hate are SMUG intellectuals who like to parade their credentials around in an attempt to impress us with their supposed intellect. Impress us with your actions, not your credentials.
