Cynthia McFadden didn't exactly say John McCain had no character, but she certainly implied it. In an interview with Pastor Rick Warren on ABC's "Nightline," McFadden was trying to get Warren to indicate if he would counsel his flock on who to vote for, and what he would say to people who say "forget character," pick the pro-lifer.
The feature on Warren came after the pastor's Civic Forum on the Presidency held over the weekend at his 22,000-member church in southern California. McFadden asked Warren if he "owed" it to "people who look up to you" to tell them for whom he was voting .
Story Continues Below Ad ↓Warren: No, and the reason why is -- I think they're smart enough on their own. I don't think anybody needs anybody else telling them who to vote for.
McFadden: So if somebody comes to you and says, you know what, forget character, I'm going to vote for the guy who is opposed to abortion, would you say they need to go back and think a little harder?
Warren flinched when McFadden asked the question. The wording is such that Obama is cast as the man with character since the forum provided viewers with the clear answer on which candidate is opposed to abortion, and McFadden had played both candidates' answers to the question of when babies get human rights.
The slam against McCain came near the end of the interview which was wide ranging and touched on Warren's opinion of Jeremiah Wright, the timing of McCain's divorce and marriage to his second wife, and whether Warren's forum was a "sham" since he was an evangelical and "most evangelicals overwhelmingly are registered as Republicans and support John McCain."
For the record, Warren revealed he was a registered Independent.

Liberals, for the last
August 19, 2008 - 11:26 ET by kgLiberals, for the last several decades have voted for their candidate mainly because they were pro-abortion. They make it an major issue at every election.
Liberals wrongly assume conservatives mainly vote for a candidate that feels abortion is wrong. While conservatives may add that to their preference they almost always vote for a candidate that has high moral standards, honesty, and is a leader that will protect this country at any cost.
McCain is two out of three of those ideals thus conservatives show concern. Obama has none of those ideals but is pro-abortion thus the liberals fawn all over him.
"Forget change, I want improvement!"
Character
August 19, 2008 - 11:37 ET by iveseenitallAs usual, an American journalist's ignorance becomes evident. Anyone who has read what John McCain suffered would never question his character. Unless, of course, she were a "liberal". "Liberal" is a synonym for ignorance.

You really want to go there Cynthia?
August 19, 2008 - 11:57 ET by acumenGood advice McFadden - Let us "go back and think a little harder."
Do I want a President that was ten minutes late entering his cone of silence....or a President that was twenty years late leaving his racist mentor?
Yeah Cynthia, let us take a closer look at the character of both candidates.

McCain doesn't have any
August 19, 2008 - 13:39 ET by BruzillaMcCain doesn't have any character! None! Zero! Nilch! And cut the whining about the "five years of torture" already! By his own account in a 1973 interview he did for US News and World Report he admitted that he freely offered to trade military information for medical care four days after his shoot down, and that was before they even laid a hand on him. He is, and always has been, an opportunist who only looks out for himself. Don't be fooled!!!

John McCain will show true
August 19, 2008 - 14:44 ET by johnbarryJohn McCain will show true character by picking a strong anti abortion running mate. Any decision to pick a pro abort will be the kiss of death. He will lose a large number of states as GOP voters stay at home or peel off to a third party candidate. Many southern states will be lost especially as Obama will benefit from a massive African American turn out.
He will destroy the party if he chooses Tom Ridge. Large numbers of Catholics and Evangelicals are just not prepared to accept a pro abort. There are some in the GOP floating Tom Ridges name working on the assumption that Catholics will vote for a McCain/Ridge ticket because Ridge is a Catholic. Forget it. Ridge is at odds with Catholic teaching on abortion consequently he will frighten off millions of potential GOP voters.
He has plenty of potential running mates who will attract votes instead of frightening them off. Sarah Palin is a fiscal conservative with a strong pro life record. As a woman candidate she would attract female voters in droves. Many women voters both Independent and Democratic are smarting at the defeat of Hillary Clinton. In protest some of these will vote for McCain especially if there is a woman on the ticket. Other potential running mates such as Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, Bobby Jindal and Tim Pawlenty amongst others are safer bets than Tom Ridge.
The Democrats are the party of death. The GOP up to now has been the party of life. There is no room for a second party of death.
John McCain needs to remember that Christian conservatives are not prepared to compromise on the abortion issue.
In 1992 third party candidate Ross Perot received 18.9% of the popular vote - approximately 19,741,065 votes. George Bush Senior lost this election to Bill Clinton.
A similar fate awaits John McCain unless he listens to the grass roots.
He may gain a few pro abort votes by choosing Ridge but these will not compensate for the millions who will leave the party.
jb... I heard this
August 19, 2008 - 14:51 ET by bigtimerjb...
I heard this morning on Rush that McCain is serious about possibly naming Lieberman VP....he is doing polling now about this with the delegates and the high end campaign donors....this is no longer just a trial balloon....
The delegates had better speak loud and clear about this...or it will be just as you say....millions will leave....not just a few.
...all the gains he made Saturday with his grand slam against Obama with the Warren forum will be gone.

Lieberman as VP candidate
August 19, 2008 - 14:59 ET by BuffNBoneLieberman as VP candidate with McCain could wind up a trivial pursuit question in 2108. "Who was nominated for a top ticket position by both major political parties and failed to win either time?"

Where the Big H is my duct tape!!!!
August 19, 2008 - 16:15 ET by motherbeltbt....you're joking, right?
He can't be serious!
If after saying so strongly the other night that he is pro-life, and as president he will have pro-life policies, he goes and picks a pro-choice VP, he is dumber than a box of rocks. Seriously, we're talking good sense quotient in the single numbers!
If he thinks he threw a sop to the conservatives in the Party and now they will stay with him come hell or high water and he can go moderate again, boy does he have a rude awakening coming!
I agree, the moderates he picks up will no way no how make up for the number of conservatives he will lose.
If he's polling I hope he's at least polling his own (supposed) party! Nevermind delegates and donors...he should be polling likely voters!!
Just when you think you just might be able to stomach him, he goes and kicks you in the stomach!
..all the gains he made Saturday with his grand slam against Obama with the Warren forum will be gone -bigtimer
What is it with Republicans??:???

Hi mb... No I'm not
August 19, 2008 - 16:22 ET by bigtimerHi mb...
No I'm not joking...Rush said he had just got the information in from a pretty good source regarding what I posted above....
In the meantime since I posted this info above, here is some other opinions about this regarding McCain naming anyone pro-abortion from some in the RNC...including David Limbaugh...this was mostly about Ridge...who by the way I just saw interviewed on CNN by Wolfie....he said we will just have to wait and see who is named VP...but Wolf did bring up Rush today, he didn't mention the Lieberman deal though.
If true that McCain is really polling about Lieberman and this no longer a trial balloon, he will be committing political suicide....I just cannot see him being that stupid politically....not even him.

August 19, 2008 - 16:37 ET by motherbeltI sure hope they are right, that McCain got the message.
Political suicide...that says it all. It will be a disaster of Biblical proportions.
Not only will he have crossed the Conservatives again, he would be making a complete fool of himself and proving that his word is worthless.
bt, should McCain pick Joe, will the McCain supporters here...

Heck...I like Joe for a democrat that is...he is great when it comes to a main issue like National Security...but fot VP....
That is insanity.
I think the delegates will tell him as much myself...if he went against this and picked him anyway, Denver would be tame to what may happen at our own convention.
That's why I posted last night, and other times... this is one time it will matter for once just who the VP is this time Dave.

August 19, 2008 - 18:01 ET by R D HelmHeck, I'd pay money to see that! :-)
Problem is, the republicans are too spineless to riot about anything, because if they haven't by now, given what the RINOs like McCain have done to the party that Ronald Reagan brought back from the dead, then chances are, it ain't gonna happen now.
Dammit!

They are hoping, just hoping McCain will name Ridge, who was of course also mentioned, or Lieberman.
