Sally Quinn: Pope 'Has Gone Too Far' With Rebuke of Nuns; Hopes They 'Take On the Boys' Club'
So, uh, have you heard that the Catholic Church is working up a "crackdown" on nuns? Of course you have, as time and again the media have been repeating the charge. Well, today Sally Quinn, the agnostic editor of the Washington Post's On Faith feature, joined in the fun with her April 24 screed about "A Catholic 'war on women.'"
From start to finish, Sister Sally poured forth bilious attacks on the Catholic Church. Here's how she opened her screed:
Jesus would be rolling over in his grave if he hadn’t already left it. The pope is taking on the nuns.
I suppose the silver lining is that Sally believes in the resurrection of Christ, at least for the purposes of this rant. She continued:
The Roman Catholic Church is a hierarchical institution if there ever was one. Nobody does anything without consulting a superior. Eventually, that would lead to His Holiness. And this time he has gone too far.
When Vatican bishops issued a report condemning nuns, including those among the 55,000 members of the Leadership Conference of Women Religious, for “radical feminism” and ordered disciplinary action, all hell broke loose.
This must be heartbreaking for the many great priests and nuns and good Catholics everywhere to watch. I think of someone like Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, one of the most honorable people I’ve ever met.
What were the crimes of these devout ladies? Well, they supported the White House over health care reform, lining up against the bishops. Big mistake. Then they had the audacity to compromise with President Obama on the issue of birth control mandates in employers’ health-care programs. Finally, they have not been outspoken enough on gay marriage and abortion.
What have these silly, recalcitrant women been doing with themselves? Burning bras? Marching in the streets? No. They have been ministering to the poor, the sick, the young and helpless, “the least of these,” as Jesus Christ so mercifully put it.
Of course, the Vatican document itself praises nuns for their selfless work of charity and mercy. But it is patently ludicrous to suggest, as Quinn does, that the Church is being antithetical to Christ for having a concern for doctrine and expecting nuns to accord to Church teaching at the same time that they devote themselves to good works.
Any cursory review of New Testament literature shows both Jesus and His apostles were keenly concerned with discernment of truth from error and for adherence to sound doctrine, not simply with moral living or the performance of good and charitable deeds.
But Quinn, a non-Catholic, dares to weigh in and bluster that "With this assault on nuns, the Catholic Church is moving farther from the teachings of Jesus, which has been for centuries, the greatest criticism of the church."
To Catholics, the bishops in general are successors of the apostles and the Pope is seen as the successor of St. Peter. They are entrusted with guarding the church's doctrine and disciplining errors and deviations therefrom. What's more, the Catholic Church's catechism holds that, "Mindful of Christ's words to his apostles: 'He who hears you, hears me', the faithful receive with docility the teachings and directives that their pastors give them in different forms."
But that's no good to Sister Sally, who is itching for either a mass exodus of nuns or a battle royale aimed at taking on the Church's Magisterium:
The nuns are facing the worst possible conundrum. Do they stay in a church that vilifies and condemns them, tells them where they can speak and what they can say, disrespects them and does not value what they do? Do they leave the church? Or do they stay and fight for their rightful place in the church, turn into “radical feminists” and take on the boys’ club?
I hope they choose one of the latter two. But they alone will decide by “listening deeply to the call of the Spirit.”

If they believe that the RCC is wrong, then why do they remain employees of it? Start another religion with their own rules; dozens of other Christian churches started that way.
Sally, perhaps you could write next on something you know about?

Expressions of faith in general, and aspects of Christianity in particular, are things that are evidently outside your realm of experience. Or comprehension.
Remember the old adage, "Write what you know"? You could write, for starters, about being an "agnostic" with an anti-Christian agenda.

Sally needs to write a piece on how muslims treat women

and children before she rants about how awful the RCC is. What's happening to them really isn't so awful. They broke their vow of obedience, but they aren't being stoned or beaten like muslims treat their women for various offenses.
These nuns knew going in what the rules of the church are. I have no problem if people don't like the RCC, but they really need to keep their mouths shut on issues like this.

Sally Quinn is a perfect example of the adage "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing."

Gee, Sally, how long do you think a little group going against Obama's policies would last in his administration? Would you root for them, or suggest they find employment elsewhere?
Maybe the nuns should go and join the Benedictine Women of Madison, where they can continue their work without being constrained by "the boys' club."
Andy maybe as a non-Catholic, Sally, you should just shut up about the Church.
Sally, seriously?

Stay out of it. You are blabbing off on things you "know not of" and have no credibility of conviction on this issue.
I'm not even Catholic (though I was taught violin at age five by a beloved nun) -- and yet you are just really irritating me for even stepping into this -- seriously, it is none of your business, Sally.

Maybe a catholic more

Maybe a catholic more knowledgeable in these things can answer two questions.
1. Are there any orders of nuns which have not been taken over by the extremist left (I don't mean liberals but hard left Cindy Shean types)
2. What power does the Pope have over these orders?
Can he cut off there funding excommunication the memberships.
On another thread someone listed a bunch of outspoken nuns who support abortion and routinely slander the church and the Pope. Are they in fact ex-nuns? Do they continue to be supported by funds from the Catholic Church after these outbursts and activism?

I would guess that the nuns of Mother Teresa's order are not leftist, as she wasn't. Most of the nuns in the U.S. are older. My aunt is in her 70's and considered one of the "young ones". She is leftist in some of her ideas, like social justice, but does not believe in abortion or anything like that.
Nuns are required to take a vow of poverty, and don't own anything. Clothing is kept in a communal closet. I don't know financially how the Church could punish them. They are not ex nuns as the Church seems loathe to excommunicate people.
Jonah, 1. Yes, there are

Jonah,
1. Yes, there are orders of nuns which have not been taken over by the extremist Left. Mother Theresa's comes to mind there are also Carmelite nuns as well as many others.
Sadly, the media makes it sound as if all nuns belong to the Left. There are a handful and sadly, most of these are in the USA.
2. The Church can and has ordered nuns, monks, priests, etc in the past to stop speaking in public or face discipline which ranges from a simple move to a more secluded area to being completely removed to disbanning a whole order if it is too far gone.
There are ex-nuns, ex-priests, ex-monks.
The Church is slowly, but surely starting to come down on the more Liberal institutions which carry the Catholic name. I had heard a while back about the Church starting to investigate nun groups in the USA as well as Catholic colleges, hospitals, etc.
Sadly, to many Catholics took Vatican II as meaning that it ment the Church condoned a relaxing of strict Church teaching.
As I have said many times here, I am from Venezuela, my parents moved to the USA a while back. They as well as us, their kids, were shocked to see how liberal, how uncatholic the Catholic Church is in the USA. Not to say this is the case with all Catholic Church's and orders in the USA, but sadly, it is a good group of Churchs, orders, schools, etc. which the media gives a loud voice too.
The Catholic Church in Latin America and many other parts of the world is still very, very conservative and strong in following the true Roman Catholicism.
