This news item led me to ask the question posed in the headline:
(Reuters) - Newsweek magazine is planning staff cuts as part of a major editorial makeover likely to result in a slimmer publication, the Wall Street Journal said, citing people close to the magazine.
The cuts are expected to be outlined in two companywide meetings on Thursday, and will come from an extension of voluntary redundancies offered in the spring, when Newsweek shed 111 jobs, the paper said.
It is not clear how many jobs will go but it is not expected to be nearly as many this time around, people with knowledge of the plan told the paper.
Editor Jon Meacham may be able to count on evangelical Christians praying for his magazine's success. After all, we are called to bless those who curse us, and Lisa Miller is just too entertaining to let go.

Jon Meacham, the man who is ON TAPE on the Charlie Rose Show agreeing with Brokaw and Thomas that they didn't have a clue as to who Barack Obama really was. The Friday before the election!!!! After two years of pandering and hiding or distorting the facts and FAILING to investigate as to "who Barack Obama really was"
My stomach already feels much better as I toss the magazine in the trash along with the coffee grounds and egg shells...a fitting resting place!
Thanks for NOTHING, Mr. Editor. May you receive your just rewards for a job very poorly done! As journalists, your staff FAILED!!

Does Newsweek Have a Prayer? Highly doubtful.
December 11, 2008 - 17:13 ET by needleOne can hardly imagine that the editorial staff at Newsweek has the slightest concept of divine judgment, or they might have thought better of publishing a cover issue trying to present the biblical arguments for homosexual marriage.
So long, Newsweek; your brazen bias and chutzpah will not be missed.

We, therefore, humbly beseech thee to grant our petition, and save us from financial demise, and the possibility of having to get real jobs. Amen"

On Newsweak
December 11, 2008 - 17:35 ET by UnsaneI used to subscribe to this excuse of a magazine. I am very happy to see this happening to them; even better if they folded entirely. Of course, they'll blame anything and everything: the Evil Bush's Recession, the Internet, misaligned stars, blah blah blah, for their impending collapse, but to me it boils down to ONE thing:
Newsweak SUCKS. And why? Because their journalism is crappy, they portray themselves with an air of snobbery, and because they are unabashed leftist cheerleaders. If they were halfway objective, I bet that even with the Internet and other sources of media, they would be doing just fine. But they aren't, so they get to reap what they sow.
This couldn't happen to a better group of people.

December 11, 2008 - 22:11 ET by Scuba DudeUnsane,
I agree with everything you say. I used to buy Time or Newsweek bi-weekly when I went to do the laundry because I wanted something to read. But the constant barrage of leftist thinking and elitism just turned me off after a while. Now I listen to my Ipod instead or bring a decent book. I cannot wait for Time, Newsweek and the NYT to go under. 3 less leftist rags won't be killing anymore trees. And it will be great to see these so called "journalist" finally out in the real world looking for a REAL job.

Does Newsweek Have a Prayer?
December 11, 2008 - 23:20 ET by AndanteNope; "prayer is a four letter word" ... Biden ;)
I used to play Carnac by holding a copy of Newsweek to my forehead proclaiming "A down arrow for Bush and any Conservative, an up arrow for any Lib" in the latest Conventional Wisdom section of the rag. Never failed

How much slimmer can this
December 11, 2008 - 23:59 ET by suzycreamcheeseHow much slimmer can this magazine get? I used to read it for free at the library on my lunch hour, but I even stopped doing that after reading article after article of biased news and incorrect information. A couple of times I yelled in frustration and threw it against the wall.
I did used to get some good chuckles out of the stupid arrow section. Has Bush had an up arrow in the past 8 years? No, I don't think he ever has. Just like O Holy One never got a down arrow. Hillery got a few side pointers.
My take on Newsweek and
December 12, 2008 - 04:31 ET by RR GOPMy take on Newsweek and many of these other publications is that their circulation, if not dropping, are holding steady...neither of which is any good for a business. You obviously want more customers, not less and not a status quo. Also, I think that such publications are not (to use one of their own PC terms) "sensitive to the views and needs" of conservative and moderate Americans.
I wonder how many hippie pads in Berkeley have copies of Newsweek on their coffee tables cum supper tables sitting next to their bongs? I'm guessing not many, and that a lot of their (Newsweek) subscriptions are from older people who just naturally renew them.
Basically, Time and Newsweek are good magazines. I recently thought about subscribing to Newsweek, but seeing how biased they were during the election in particular put that idea out of my head.
Don't these pubs want to make money and are they actually quite OK with suffering from the demise of our free enterprise system that they themselves have been helping to bring about all these years?
Maybe these 'journalists' are confident they will get work in the WPA II that FDR the 2nd will crank up sometime early next year?

Market Saturated with Liberal News Outlets
December 12, 2008 - 15:14 ET by deerjerkydaveThere are dozens of national liberal media news outlets. They all compete for a liberal audience and ignore the conservative market. Conservatives who in the past have unwittingly watched or read these liberal sources are catching on that they can get their news elsewhere (the Internet, Foxnews, and talk radio), people like me who now refuse to watch or read liberal news propoganda.
The fact that Fox News has been a huge success proves that there is a significant news market among conservatives and people who want fair and balanced information. It makes me wonder why we haven't seen more news agencies shift in the conservative direction. The only answer in my mind is that they will clutch their liberal ideology to their graves before shifting politically to the right. Which is fine with me, bye bye Newsweek. Bye bye Time. Bye bye New York Times.

December 12, 2008 - 17:41 ET by NorthCoasterMaybe if Murdoch buys the NYT and turns it into a stellar Conservative or balanced institution, we'll see growth in readership and a resurgent NYT. Only then will any other Liberal rags change their biased approach to the news. It would be so satisfying to see a huge resurgence in readership there especially after the anti-American bias and propaganda that's been promoted over the past 8 years or longer.
