Seattle Times Leaves Out McDermott's (D) in Illegal Phone-taping Story

A federal judge on April 1 ordered Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.), a veteran liberal legislator and Saddam Hussein stooge, to pay Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) $1 million for an illegally-taped 1996 phone conversation. Even the Associated Press, which we've taken to task numerous times for dropping party labels, noted McDermott's party affiliation. Not so the Seattle Times, McDermott's hometown paper:

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., says Congressman Jim McDermott owes an Ohio congressman $1 million for leaking an illegally taped phone call to the media.

Today's decision may end the dispute that began in 1996 when John Boehner (BAY'-ner) was taped talking about an ethics case involving Newt Gingrich. The tape reached McDermott who gave it two newspapers. He says it's a free speech issue.

Boehner sued and the case has been in the courts for a decade. A federal court ruled McDermott had no right to release the call.

McDermott says the million-dollar judgment is a small price to pay in defense of the First Amendment. He created a defense fund, and it collected about $100,000 last year.

The Seattle Times has previously backed McDermott. In a 2004 endorsement, the paper noted McDermott's far-left credentials:

McDermott has represented the 7th District for 15 years and may have the seat for life. He is chairman of the liberal Americans for Democratic Action and a member of the far-left-leaning Progressive Caucus. He is Congress' only psychiatrist and champions a Canadian-style medical system.

In the courts for a decade...

Am I the only one who's suddenly VERY curious about the size of the resulting legal fees regarding this rarely-enforced law??
JMR

A corruption-story the TV media will-not cover.

A ten-year case and lawyers

A ten-year case and lawyers are expensive.

Also, as you know, sarc, this is one of my "favorite" topics...and, as such, I am wondering why the Seattle paper, in furtherance of its anti-conservative bias, failed to remind its readers that the politician who was ensnared in the ethics case, Newt Gingrich, is a Republican.

Jer

Clearly, they should have designated

ANY and ALL politicians' parties the moment their names were first mentioned -- hence my pushing for a standard saying exactly-that. Since we all know if the politicians involved in the same scandals were Greens/Libertarians/etc. their parties WOULD have been mentioned right-away, it's definitely down my bias-alley.
JMR

PS "expensive" doesn't describe things nearly as well as a number would!

A corruption-story the TV media will-not cover.

newt's a Republican?!?!?!?

newt's a Republican?!?!?!?

wow, no one ever knew that, i'm sure

regarding McDermott at least they dutifully included the "Rep." in front of his name - they always do - that way people dumb enough to believe the MSM on anything will probably believe he's a Republican

when we can actually find the memo that codifies this MSM policy then....well...it still won't be enough to stop them...

Some ill-informed people

Some ill-informed people might think that, but Rep., short for Representative, is preferred over Congressman. It's basic AP Style.

oh yeah, unless of course

oh yeah, unless of course "Democratic congressman McDermott" does something admirable - then suddenly "Democratic congressman McDermott" is plastered all over the page - AP style breaks like the wind...

Shrinks from Seattle

Jim McDermott. Niles Crane. Frazier Crane.

Maybe moronic is a better term.

It is ironic that McDermott is against the NSA wiretapping on potential terrorists. Maybe moronic is a better term.

this morning on CNN

There was an interview this morning on CNN, with a democrat mayor. It had something to do with some kind of charity hes doing. The thing that popped right out was his party affilation right out front. It seems they dont mind putting it on there when the news is positive.

Not ironic at all

Everybody knows that conservative Republicans are a greater danger to our liberties than any terrorist.

MCDERMOTT'S LUCKY SO FAR.

MCDERMOTT'S LUCKY SO FAR. ALL HE HAS TO PAY AT THIS POINT IS A MILL. WHEN THEY GET HIM FOR TREASON ,HE SHOULD BE PUT AGAINST A WALL AND SHOT ! THE SCUM BAG .

Well, here in Eastern

Well, here in Eastern Washington (where the mountains make it almost a world away from Seattle), we don't really need to see his party affiliation, because he's more popularly known as "Baghdad Jim."

Thus, everyone knows who you're talking about. =)

Did it escape the press that

Did it escape the press that the above actions tantamount to "spying on Americans"?

McDermott represents a huge

McDermott represents a huge district that encompasses Seattle and the surrounding area.  The Seattle Times doesn't have to state he's a democrat, anyone with a brain in this area knows he's a democrat.

The Seattle Times is read

The Seattle Times is read well outside of Washington State by anyone who can access the Web site online. Adding "(D)" to the story doesn't waste much digital ink nor does it detract from anything substantial in the story.

And that's why the AP article

And that's why the AP article got it right in this instance--noting party affiliation of each and every politician mentioned in the story.

However, in this case, the subject individuals all held national office.  When dealing with governors, mayors, state representatives, etc., the results are a mixed bag.
