Joy Behar: Speaking on Faith is 'Impinging on the Constitution'

A presidential candidate who shares his or her religious beliefs is "impinging on the Constitution" according to "View" co-host Joy Behar. On the show’s season premiere September 2 the panel caught up on the many hot button political stories from Sarah Palin’s pregnant daughter to sharing religion in a public forum.

When Barbara Walters brought up the discussion of Senators Obama and McCain attending a forum with Reverend Rick Warren, Behar declared "both of them needed to say that Jesus Christ was their savior. That is very much impinging on the Constitution in my opinion. Why do we need to know who’s their savior?" Elisabeth Hasselbeck and Sherri Shepherd disagreed wondering what is wrong with them making such a statement.

Perhaps Joy Behar should read up on the Constitution before making such a flawed statement on national television as she has already demonstrated a lack of knowledge in the Constitution’s history. The First Amendment to the Constitution guarantees freedom of religion. Presidential candidates, as U.S. citizens, enjoy the right to speak or not speak about their own faith. While the First Amendment does prohibit an established religion, it does not prohibit elected officials from proclaiming their beliefs.

Earlier in the discussion, upon the news of the pregnancy of Sarah Palin’s daughter, Whoopi Goldberg, a very opinionated abortion rights advocate, while not belittling Palin’s daughter’s decision to have the baby, opined "sometimes having the child is not the best thing for the kid."

To Whoopi’s credit, she also rebuked some in the media for following around the Palin family and looking too deeply into their private life.

Relevant portions of the transcript are below.

WHOOPI GOLDBERG: Now I’ve said always I didn’t think it was anybody’s business if their daughter gets pregnant. You know, this is my feeling because I’ve been there and I’ve been there on the other side of it when they chase you and they want to know everything. I don’t like it. Teenagers are going- and I’ve said this here too- teenagers, when they want to, they’re going to. And you can tell them just say no and you can give them all of the information in the world. You can show them condoms until they’re red in the face. Kids are kids, and here kids are children. They’re kids, so there you are.

[...]

ELISABETH HASSELBECK: I think it’s unfair of people to be diving into her daughter’s life. I think it’s unfair of people- she is a minor- and I think it’s unfair of people to dive into her daughter’s boyfriend, the father of her child, her fiancé, whom she’s going to marry, his websites, his blogs, and whatever he wrote. I think that we should- are you so afraid of the issue of this election, are you so afraid of dealing with the real issues that you need to then be on Facebook on MySpace and their kids?

[...]

GOLDBERG: It really does then take away from this girl being able to sit with her mom and being able to figure out what to do. Her mom says that she believes that right to life, and this girl, this is what she’s going to do. That’s it. But what I, what I really wish- and this is just me really going slightly off- is that everyone could have the choice to make that decision, that, that doesn’t go away. Because God bless Sarah- to have the child or not have the child, and I say this because Sarah Palin is one of those women who has the children and she’s got a strong family. But every kid that gets pregnant does not have that. And sometimes having the child is not the best thing for the kid. So I hope that this idea that this girl has made a choice and this one has made a choice stays with us. Because I know a lot of people want to get rid of choice. But I do think it’s important to get that.

BEHAR: Right, I don’t disagree.

[applause]

HASSELBECK: I don’t think that choice is being taken away, but I think that a lot of people are looking down on that she’s going to have this child. She’s giving this, this child a chance at life.

BEHAR: No one’s looking down on her.

HASSELBECK: No, no, there are, there are left wing liberal blogs-

BEHAR: But not at this table, okay?

HASSELBECK: I didn’t say it was at this table.

[...]

BARBARA WALTERS: We had, among the many debates, was the debate this summer on the faith of, of McCain and Obama, both of whom have very strong faiths. And, and, technically, that should not be something that interests us in terms of government, in terms of, you know, how much or how little or whatever you believe in God. But, but we have been doing that now, more and more going into one’s personality. It may not be the best thing to do. But it’s very-

BEHAR: You mean religious faith, going into religious faith.

WALTERS: But we have been going more and more into personality. There was a time when you didn’t. You just discussed the subject. But more and more we are interested in the background, where they came from, what they’re life was like, what their values were like, which may or may not have anything to do with whether they would be a good president. So you can’t- it’s very difficult even though it may not be the best thing to say "we will discuss this, but we won’t discuss that."

BEHAR: To your point Barbara. On that roundtable on religion that they had-

SHERRI SHEPHERD: Rick Warren’s church?

BEHAR: What’s his name? Rick Warren. I mean, both of them needed to say that Jesus Christ was their savior. That is very much impinging on the Constitution in my opinion. Why do we need to know who’s their savior?

HASSELBECK: Why can’t they say-

BEHAR: It’s not anyone’s business.

SHEPHERD: Why can’t they just say it?

It's no suprise...

that Joy would make an issue out of this, but I doubt that she would have had a problem with Joe Leiberman speaking about his Jewish faith.

Obama has been speaking about faith ever since we found out about Rev Wright back in February.  Joy didn't seem to have a problem with it then.  It's only now, during a forum where McCain discusses his faith that Joy feels the need to berate them both.

Again Joy Behar displays her

Again Joy Behar displays her bigotry and ignorance. Not only is it constitutional to have freedom of religion it's also constitutional to have freedom of speach, meaning the freedom to express ones faith. A candidate is free to have a faith but also express their faith. What is a sham is this modern iterpretation of the establishment clause in the constitution. Their is no seperation of church and state. The sham of seperation of church and state has only been around since sham ruling in a 1947 case. Before that their was NO seperation of church and state.

You are right...

except for the "seperation of church and state."

I believe that the expression was first used by Thomas Jefferson in describing the establishment clause.  Unfortunately for us, he chose poor wording to describe how the Federal Government could not establish a religion, and that 1947 activist court seized on it despite knowing full well that wasn't the founder's intentions.

Kind of sad how President Jefferson was just trying to explain that clause a little better, and a court later uses his words to turn the Constitution inside out.  Then every liberal court since has ignored the other half of the sentence, "or prohibiting the free exercise thereof."

  Seems pretty simple to me.

GOLDBERG: You can show them

GOLDBERG: You can show them condoms until they’re red in the face. Kids are kids, and here kids are children.

Gee, we haven't heard much on condoms from that other kid, Silky, lately...

HASSELBECK: I don’t think

HASSELBECK: I don’t think that choice is being taken away, but I think that a lot of people are looking down on that she’s going to have this child. She’s giving this, this child a chance at life.

You said it all Elizabeth.

The First Amendment to the Constitution

prevents the Government from setting up a State Religion like The Church of England, period.

The First Amendment to the Constitution also allows free expression of religion because the founding Colonies were primarily religious enclaves that were settled by different Christian sects. To avoid the strife that embroiled Europe and caused many of the Colonists to emigrate, this feature of the Constitution was a key factor in maintaining peaceful relations between the original States. Why do you think it was the "First Amendment"? It was so important that it comes before the "Right to Bear Arms".

Joey B.,

Study your European and Colonial Histories.

So when did Joyless Behar..

...become an authority on the constitution?

Besides that, how much uglier can this woman get?

All I know is she's rapidly approaching Helen Thomas.

Cool Arrow, what do you mean "rapidly"?

Well, gt

My momma told me I should always say something nice to a lady, so when I met Joy Behar I said to her "You know, for a fat girl you really don't sweat much"

Momma says bein' that way shows I'm a real gentleman.

lmao

CA I dont know about you..lol

Clueless!

"But more and more we are interested in the background, where they came from, what they’re life was like, what their values were like, which may or may not have anything to do with whether they would be a good president."

More and more? What is she talking about? A potential leader’s personal background has ALWAYS been of prime important to Americans when choosing who will lead them! George Washington, for example, wasn't pick as our first president because he made good speeches! He was pick BECAUSE of his background and experience. Americans have always judged potential leaders by their personal attributes as those attributes DIRECTLY affect someone's leadership abilities. We judge you on your behavior, past and present, and not on your potential.

Obama: My job is above my pay grade

Walters as dumb as Behar

"BARBARA WALTERS: We had, among the many debates, was the debate this summer on the faith of, of McCain and Obama, both of whom have very strong faiths. And, and, technically, that should not be something that interests us in terms of government, in terms of, you know, how much or how little or whatever you believe in God."

Let's go over this again Babs because you're not getting it.

Christians and religious Jews base their life decisions on what God says.  They point to the Bible (or Torah) as their guidebook. It IS something that interests them in terms of government and the candidates they choose.

Atheists, agnostics, and liberals build an ideology off of whatever belief system they stitch together for themselves.  It could be based on Marx, Communism, socialism, etc.  That is something they look for in their leaders.

It is stupid to say that we shouldn't include faith in our government.  Everyone has faith in something.

It is simple!

Want this moron to go away?  Quit feeding your money to ABC and start telling them what you think.  ABC understands money.  Quit watching their shows, quit buying products advertised on their shows, and let both ABC and their advertisers know what you think.  Once ABC, and those that advertise with them start losing money, you will hear a different tune being played.

awffp1890, not a bad idea!

I stopped watch ABC, CBS, NBC and their cable affiliates a long time ago. Their left-coast, bleeding-heart, 'do as I say, not as I do' liberal bias turned me off completely.

And these morons are totally clueless as to why their ratings flounder and more people are turning to Fox.

Atheists don't like to be reminded that they might be wrong

This is what is behind Behar's statement and discomfort.

The Constitution says that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. The atheists always want to leave out that last part after the comma.

The day that "politician" became a career choice is the day we started losing the Republic. Let's get it back! Alan Keyes '08.

They also ignore the first

They also ignore the first part that says "Congress shall make no law.."

Joy Behar, Constitutional Scholar

Once again, Joy speaks, and removes all doubt.

freedom 'of' not freedom 'from' religion

Joyless Blowhard is just an icon of libtard beliefs. Because each of them IS the universe and thus all important, there can be no other god before them. So they totally reject all the mainstream religions because those define us a mere mortals and seekers of the higher truth (and usually a higher being in charge of things).

In the meantime they try to fill the religious void in their hearts with magic crystals, pyramid power, fern fondling, bunny hugging, etc. Just observe the zelousness of the global warming/climate change idiots. Challenge any of their tenets with an actual scientific fact and they foam at the mouth and babble death threats.

"And this too shall pass." But, more like a kidney stone.

Joy Dehore will never read

Joy Dehore will never read the constitution, she'd have trouble reading See Spot Run. She will never approve of a religion that has moral absolutes. She practices situation ethics - if the person doing something believes that it's ok then it's ok for them. If the person believes that it's wrong then it's wrong.
