On the June 17 edition of "The View," Joy Behar stated the obvious that "more people die in hospitals than anywhere else." Of course, that makes perfect sense given that people who are dying tend to get rushed to the hospital. Instead Joy Behar, who blamed earthquakes on global warming offered a more intriguing answer: "because it’s germ free."
The panel conversed about the high prevalence of germs in our world and its dangers. Behar, attempting to refute that germs are always harmful, clumsily cited the high death rate in hospitals. Not only did she fail to note that dying people tend to check into hospitals in one last effort to cling on to their lives, they are hardly germ free given the high concentration of sick people.
Whoopi Goldberg and Elisabeth Hasselbeck both disagreed that hospitals are void of germs.
On show where allegedly many people get their news, it is sad that such inaccuracies are aired regularly. One co-host, given a forum to air her expert opinion, "never thought" about whether the earth is round or flat, and thought Jesus preceded the Greeks. A former "View" co-host once said it is "physically impossible" for fire to melt steel.

We are WAY too concerned
June 17, 2008 - 16:07 ET by balboaWe are WAY too concerned with germs as a culture. I've heard many doctors say that the reason kids have so many allergies these days is because parents try to rid their homes of all germs, and they don't build up any natural immunities.
Germs! More germs!
Good point!
June 17, 2008 - 16:12 ET by Justin McCarthyBalboa, No disagreement here. I think Joy could have made that point without using the hospital reference. That was just dumb.

June 17, 2008 - 16:32 ET by balboaOh yeah, it was another glorious tidbit from Behar. Had a friend get knee surgery, just a scope, and in two days the knee ballooned to a grapefruit size. Infection from the surgery! And I'm pretty sure he didn't bring those "germs" with him...
Agreement
June 17, 2008 - 16:16 ET by BradzillaI tend to agree with you on that, but it doesn't make Joy any less of an idiot for such a statement. Well, that one and a history of others. She has apparently never heard of an iatrogenic or nosocomial infection. Big words for infections acquired in a medical care setting. Sorry, I'm in health care.
I was too, in health care,
June 17, 2008 - 16:25 ET by motherbeltI was too, in health care, and know that hospitals are the probably the most germ-laden places in the world.

June 17, 2008 - 16:56 ET by Darth DutchYou hit the nail on the head on this, Bal.
My wife works at a hospital and when she first worked there, she was sick for much of her first year. Now she isn't because her body's immune system is in high gear year round due to all of the germs that are there. One doctor she knows said that parents should let their pets lick and play with their babies (safely of course) so that the babies are exposed to as many germs as possible.

Agreed.

I truly hope you are joking with this sarc,
June 18, 2008 - 12:37 ET by DEVILDOCMOMI read your link and do not doubt it. BUT, it is not the nurses and docs pushing drugs it is patients DEMANDING them from us. We have our frequent flyers and many, many others who want their drugs. Believe me they will sue or make life miserable for the doc who denies them. Sure, our ER docs won't write scripts for more than say, 15, of a pain killer AND they do send out letters to those who abuse the system, but the government, in their infinite wisdom has made it difficult.
Many want scripts for antibiotics which will not work for their cold or other complaint, but they want drugs anyway. Spend a day with me.
No, not joking
June 18, 2008 - 12:47 ET by sarcasmoThe article says what kills 'em, not me, so any argument you have is with the author, who was totally serious. I happen to think prescription drugs are a lot more dangerous than average people think, so I avoid medical situations whenever possible. A relevant excerpt:
Those numbers don't seem to be lying. As for legal pain killers, the danger is in the prescriber getting jailed for alleged over-prescription, not sued for underprescription, from everything I've ever seen. You're more than welcome to provide refuting links regarding the legal dangers of prescribing painkillers, should any actually exist...

The tax & spend drug war looks racist in the real world.
I think you missed my point,
June 18, 2008 - 13:22 ET by DEVILDOCMOMas I said, I do not doubt the truth of the story (without further research I am not willing to do at the moment, so I am agreeing with the story as you post it). My point was, it is not hospitals (or docs, or nurses) PUSHING drugs, it is patients DEMANDING the drugs.
The docs I work with do not "over prescribe", as I stated they limit the amount they will write for and are careful to do so. Again my point is patients demanding drugs, not that "hospitals" are forcing drugs on innocent people who come in to the facilities; purely what I see working in an ER. If you know others who work in hospitals, see what they say.
Hospitals DO seem to push them
June 19, 2008 - 03:37 ET by sarcasmoIn order to increase sales, but they're certainly not the only ones pushing drugs these days. There's an entire pharmaceutical industry giving doctors everything from magnets & pens with logos to trips to Hawaii in the name of prescribing more drugs. Docs & drug companies can talk a professional game all they want, but I see the truth. That's not to say patients aren't also responsible. Imagine if people pestered their doctors every time a TV ad says "ask your doctor" about some stupid drug they probably don't need. A good example of what I'm talking about is "restless leg syndrome." I've got a free & certain cure for "restless leg syndrome" -- it's called "get off your couch & get some exercise for once."
And the people I know in the medical profession verify what I said about fear of arrest (or of endless legal hassle) just for doing their jobs & relieving pain, which is a point you didn't address, but which I totally stand by. Needless to say, those stats from the article tend to make the tax and spend drugwar look like the expensive failure it is. That's not gonna change anytime soon, but it was nice seeing a "mainstream" media story finally covering what's been obvious to me for decades.

June 17, 2008 - 17:56 ET by MidAmericaMy 83 year old father broke his ankle coming down off of a step ladder and after three days in the hospital he almost died. He had gotten the antibiotic resistant staph and it nearly killed him. He never really got over it and we don't know how many years it took off his life but he went downhill to his death in about three years.
I've read that in England the bugs are so bad people travel to other countries for surgery.

June 18, 2008 - 16:11 ET by whatajoyI'd like to see Joy Behar be tested on "Are you Smarter Than A Fifth Grader" because things she has said over the years on The View make her look stupid, ignorant and dumb. She says things without thinking and assumes they are facts because she thinks so. I wonder if she has ever owned or opened an encyclopedia. She probably thinks an encyclopedia is a sexually transmitted disease.
