With any weather related disaster, the mainstream media typically blames it on "global warming." This was no exception on the July 26 edition of "The Early Show." Upon reporting on the flooding in Britain, correspondent Elizabeth Palmer concluded her report blaming the disaster on global warming and predicting more to come.
"But most people think that with climate change, flooding like this, or even worse, could become common place here in Britain."
As if floods did not occur before the industrial age. CBS followed NBC's "Today" as correspondent Keith Miller blamed the disaster on "global warming."

}}}----> Worst flooding in 47 years
July 26, 2007 - 10:05 ET by Cool ArrowBut not the worst flooding ever.
With the whole earth interlinked, it is logical we would be more quickly aware of weather tragedies.
I doubt my great grandparents knew much at all about Mt. Tambora or Krakatoa, or some devastating Tsunami that occurred in their lifetime. But those disasters did happen.
Grand Canyon
July 26, 2007 - 10:21 ET by ThisnThatI'm just glad the MSM didn't exist when the Grand Canyon was forming. Talk about a geological disastor. Can you imagine the hysteria?
"Prime Dinasour grazing land flooded. Millions of tons of soil being washed away. Gullys and gaping holes appearing across miles and miles of pristine landscape. Already the damage is incalculatable, and there's no relief in sight. Weather forecasts say the trend is to continue over the next million years, even if every human was to disappear now, there is no way to reverse this trend. Mankind has sowed the seeds of Mother Earth's destruction. More from our field correspondent, live on the scene, Thor...."

July 26, 2007 - 10:26 ET by danboThere's a good chance they did know about Krakatoa. If they had access to newspapers. (Some places didn't.)
Krakatoa erupted shortly after the underwater telegraph lines were set up. As a result the news was quickly dispersed to Europe and the Americas.
I've heard the Eruption described as the first worldwide media event.

Sciene and Krakatoa
July 26, 2007 - 10:59 ET by GalvanicIn addition to the new communications of the Industrial Age, there was an explosive (no pun intended) interest in the natural sciences, creating many amateur scientist fascinated with measuring things. Consequently, quite a few of these amateurs were able to measure geological and atmospheric anomalies triggered or influenced by the Krakatoa event.
There seemed to be a
July 26, 2007 - 17:54 ET by danboThere seemed to be a fascination with the event. I've even seen the date and time that the reminants of the tsunami went up the Thames. (only and inch or so) But they tracked the wave worldwide.
In the following year the world reported over a degree C drop in temp world wide. And artist painted the sunsets that were intensified in the aftermath of the eruption.. (And todays scientists are studing those paintings.)

July 26, 2007 - 10:49 ET by BeowulfIs this anything like the '04 hurricane season being caused by Globull Alarming? But the '05 season (or lack thereof) being greeted with total silence? Why is it that anything negative is caused by manmade GW but anything positive or a total absence of harsh weather is totally ignored? No hurricanes - nothing. Mild climate - nothing. A .0001 increase in temperature near one house with a temp guage - international news for weeks.

July 26, 2007 - 16:51 ET by sarcasmoI don't think the Spock character on the original Star Trek displayed any particular party politics. (Spock was, after all, too logical for that!) From discussions by George Takei on the Stern Show, I suspect Mr. Nimoy, if that's who you meant, is in truth a Democrat just like the vast majority of Hollywood.

I think what TM was meaning was the character "Spock's" insisning on using logic in the face of the skepticism and ridiculing by the others in the crew, most especially the whining, socialist leaning "Bones".

July 26, 2007 - 17:10 ET by sarcasmoOh. Maybe you're right. I'm just a total geek about the whole subject (don't go to the conventions, though -- I'm not THAT weird!) of Star Trek, especially the original series, which I watched a minimum of 3 times per episode for my entire childhood.
Star Trek, despite many libertarians' love for the series, was actually sort of a libertarian version of an oppressive medical-dictatorship hell throughout the first series and really until the Firengi came-along to save the day -- and even then, the bigoted and anticapitalist bias in that species' introduction actually caused some libertarian fans (yes, including me...) to write impassioned letters to Hollyweird in protest. And if you'll notice, they responded to us as a market quite well with Quark & Quark's Bar (where libertarian critters of any species would flee to escape the medical dictatorship-hell of the rest of the space station!). My favorite ST drinking-line: Worf, when he said "Less talk! More synthahol!" ;)

July 26, 2007 - 11:37 ET by Six String SpiffWhy do liberals insist on standing in horrible conditions. One of these days, one these 'reporter' morons will be swept away by whatever intense, not-supposed-to-stand-in, extreme weather condition, and they will be swept away. I always beg the question of WHY?! Why are you in a hurricane? Why are you in a canoe in a flood? Why are you STANDING in the flood? This complete lack of logic hurts my brain.
What the MSSM doesn't report can kill you.
