Digital Forensics Expert On Osama Video: Definite Fake

I think you will remember NewsBusters being one of the first to question the authenticity of the latest Osama tapes. Well now a digital forensics expert validates our skeptism. It was a Big Fake!

In analyzing the video, Neal Krawetz of Hactor Factor, an expert on digital image forensics, said in his latest blogs that the video contained many visual and audio splices, and that all of the modifications were of very low quality.

Most striking is bin Laden’s beard, which has been gray in recent images. For this video it is black. “As far as my tools can detect, there has been no image manipulation of the bin Laden portion of the image beyond contrast adjustment. His beard really does appear to be that color.”

….

The September 7 video shows bin Laden dressed in a white hat, white shirt and yellow sweater. Krawetz notes “this is the same clothing he wore in the 2004-10-29 video. In 2004 he had it unzipped, but in 2007 he zipped up the bottom half. Besides the clothing, it appears to be the same background, same lighting, and same desk. Even the camera angle is almost identical.” Krawetz also notes that “if you overlay the 2007 video with the 2004 video, his face has not changed in three years–only his beard is darker and the contrast on the picture has been adjusted.”

More important though are the edits. At roughly a minute and a half into the video there is a splice; bin Laden shifts from looking at the camera to looking down in less than 1/25th of a second. At 13:13 there is a second, less obvious splice. In all, Krawetz says there are at least six splices in the video. Of these, there are only two live bin Laden segments, the rest of the video composed of still images. The first live section opens the video and ends at 1:56. The second section begins at 12:29 and continues until 14:01. The two live sections appear to be from different recordings “because the desk is closer to the camera in the second section.”

Then there are the audio edits. Krawetz says “the new audio has no accompanying ‘live’ video and consists of multiple audio recordings.” References to current events are made only during the still frame sections and after splices within the audio track.” And there are so many splices that I cannot help but wonder if someone spliced words and phrases together. I also cannot rule out a vocal imitator during the frozen-frame audio. The only way to prove that the audio is really bin Laden is to see him talking in the video,” Krawetz says.

So now the question is whether he is dead or living with Elvis. Hopefully our intelligence agencies don't take long to catch up.

Hmmm... Sounds like the rat

Hmmm... Sounds like the rat is dead. Why else go through all that trouble? What would be the purpose unless his lines of communication are broken.

Well

The AQ connected press was claiming it was AZZAM the American doing the script, and frankly they probably have the channels to know. They used a retired CIA officer to make "the claim", for their cover if you ask me. I frankly believe they were told when they checked their sources.

Second, it would be nice if the CIA could have an explanation as rudimentary as above, but as we all know- sources and methods or whatever they want to call their analysis technique is so patheically guarded that we will never hear - I guess - anything but "we've authenticated , it's Osama's voice " - which tells us basically NOTHING since there are so many Osama voice recordings anyway.

I'm quite disappointed really, in the overall pathetic nature of the CIA, unless it's the msm guarding all the real info and not releasing of their own volition.

I heard one report that it would take them a week to determine anything - and another report said they were still analyzing the video from 2004. That's 3 years of "analyzing" - I'm sorry but that's so pathetic it makes me cringe. I certainly believe it as well. I can see some eggheaded lib in there for 3 years trying to "prove" somehow if it is bin laden, Bush or his own employer- the CIA - made the 3 year old tape.

 Whatever.

If I'm lucky I'll catch some offbeat source  C-span or some thinktank or some person that analyzes independently like above and actually LEARN something. In that sense I very much appreciate the lead posting and the efforts of the individual who made an analysis.

The main press initially did NOT point out the very long periods of no video movement. They made page long ten paragraphs whines about everything Bush, but failed to even offer that very basic information. I consider that even more pathetic than whatever the CIA does or does not tell us.

Oh hell ... Guess this

Oh hell ... Guess this episode of Queer Eye For The Jihadi Guy was a bomb ... er, bust ... er, dud ... er-r-r-r-r ...

Thanks for the pro

Thanks for the pro confirmation of what most people with an ounce of common sense thought: that's one big, not so good, fake.

Now I think the guy should run the same analysis on Keith Olbermann and his "Countdown" show.

I mean, it's obvious all his shows are not very good re-edits of stuff he did in 2004.

Clearly Keith Olberman is DEAD! (Well, he is to me! And to the ratings!)

I saw this right after the first video and yet the msm never picked up on it nor even investigate. They are still touting him as the great escapee from our clutches. Creeps

Just how many nominations

Would Osama get? I'm not being my usual sarcastic ass here either. Those traitors in Hollywood would probably nominate this sub-human for some award (your category would fit the bill).

I can see it now, Osama's acceptace speech via video link:

If that was OBL, I'll eat my shoe.

Secondly, which democrat wrote that crock of BS we heard in that rambling, dis-jointed mess, anyway?

The traitor John Murtha, perhaps?

One other thing on the bin laden video

Just because the video is patched and spliced, does not make it "fake" - meaning it was something bin laden did not authorize to be sent as a message from him.

See, that's the other PROBLEM claiming "it's fake".

So, some al jazeera geek was hired to patch some crap together because they're only able to get audio snuck through...

Or maybe it is our lovely CIA agencies best work. I actually would not be surprised, to tell you the truth. Wouldn't surprise me if it was a "compartmentalized" job either, that all of the other 32 CIA had no idea was set to occur, and that now are expending resources on.

That's how I feel about the whole schmear. I've seen even small organizations being so stinted in information sharing, and basically NOONE wants to know anything, because they consider it "more work" or then it's "their responsibility" since they were informed, etc etc. They certainly don't want anyone knowing "how to do their job" - my gawd guard that with their life and lies, because that's called "job security".

I can just imagine the same thing in 33 intel agencies that all are supposed to guard top secret information. I think of 33 Rosie's each sitting on their lazy chair and only 4 bags of Dorito intel chips to go around.

So - it's spliced, why...

"Previously al Qaeda preferred to deliver its videos via a dead drop method using couriers. However, the method of delivery was changed in January 2005 after a U.S. air raid on an al Qaeda meeting near Damadola, Pakistan. The current method of delivery, which appears to be handled by As Sahab, is an Internet delivery of video or audio materials "

Good reading on AQ and binny boy and his pain

Nice write-up with little known facts, the author of The Looming Tower shares little known information, a great read :

"

From hiding places in Iran, Yemen, Iraq, and the tribal areas of western Pakistan, Al Qaeda’s survivors lamented their failed strategy. Abu al-Walid al-Masri, a senior leader of Al Qaeda’s inner council, later wrote that Al Qaeda’s experience in Afghanistan was “a tragic example of an Islamic movement managed in an alarmingly meaningless way.” He went on, “Everyone knew that their leader was leading them to the abyss and even leading the entire country to utter destruction, but they continued to carry out his orders faithfully and with bitterness.”

In June, 2002, bin Laden’s son Hamzah posted a message on an Al Qaeda Web site: “Oh, Father! Where is the escape and when will we have a home? Oh, Father! I see spheres of danger everywhere I look. . . . Tell me, Father, something useful about what I see.”

“Oh, son!” bin Laden replied. “Suffice to say that I am full of grief and sighs. . . . I can only see a very steep path ahead. A decade has gone by in vagrancy and travel, and here we are in our tragedy. Security has gone, but danger remains.”

The expulsion from Afghanistan, Suri later wrote, was followed by “three meager years which we spent as fugitives,” dodging the international dragnet by “moving between safe houses and hideouts.” In 2002, he fled to eastern Iran, where bin Laden’s son Saad and Al Qaeda’s security chief, Saif al-Adl, had also taken refuge. There was a five-million-dollar bounty on his head."

"Suri" > Later, he moved to Jordan, where he joined the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist group that opposed Syria’s dictator, Hafez al-Assad. In 1982, Assad decided that the Brotherhood posed a threat to his authority, and his troops slaughtered as many as thirty thousand people in the city of Hama, one of the group’s strongholds. The ruthlessness of Assad’s response shocked Suri. He renounced the Brotherhood, which he held responsible for provoking the destruction of Hama, and took refuge in Europe for several years. In 1985, he moved to Spain, where he married and became a Spanish citizen; two years later, he found his way to Afghanistan, where he met Osama bin Laden.

The two men have had a contentious relationship. Although Suri became a member of Al Qaeda’s inner council, he grew disillusioned by the fecklessness and the disorganization that characterized Al Qaeda’s training camps in Afghanistan. “People come to us with empty heads and leave us with empty heads,” he wrote. “They have done nothing for Islam. This is because they have not received any ideological or doctrinal training.”

In 1992, he moved back to Spain, where he helped to establish a terrorist cell that played a part in the planning of September 11th. Two years later, Suri moved to England. He soon became a fixture in the Islamist press in London, writing articles for the magazine Al Ansar, which promoted the insurgency in Algeria that resulted in more than a hundred thousand deaths. The magazine’s editor was Abu Qatada, a Palestinian cleric who has been characterized as Al Qaeda’s spiritual guide in Europe. Al Ansar was, in many ways, the first jihadi think tank; Suri and other strategists suggested tactics for undermining the despotic regimes in the Arab world, and they promoted attacks on the West even as American and European intelligence agencies were largely unaware ... This Suri character can write for a VISIBLE paper in Europe - in London ... WOW.

I guess some portions of the west like the "pressure" on the despotic regimes (saudi arabia , egypt) as well, or are just so liberalized and pathetic.... it's bad whatever the reasons are.

Those who think Osama video fake: Definite Crazy

The CIA, the Pentagon, MI5, billions of dollars in technology and thousands of the best intelligence workers in the world say the video is authentic but a blog disputes this and thinks they know better.  Almost too sad to be funny - almost.

I don't think it matters,

I don't think it matters, Osama may very well be dead. But its still their message, and that part we should take seriously...ignore the man behind the curtain.

Can't you read? Apparently not.

Can't you read?

An expert in the science of digital video technology has pointed out rather obvious problems with this so-called "message" from Bin Laden.

And when did the CIA confirm this was an authentic tape recorded recently?  The CIA has absolutely confirmed that this is 100% Bin Laden? They have confirmed that it is not a rehash of previous footage, that the audio is 100% Bin Laden throughout including during the odd insertion of stills. They have confirmed all that?

And even if they did, why would you necessarily believe these "intelligence workers."

The CIA has managed to miss just about every major development in state sponsored terrorism since the fall of the Shah. Hardly inspiring is it?

(I refer to the people who run the agency, plus their political masters, and not those thousands of patriots who have put their live on the line, and died like William Buckley, tortured and murdered by the Iranians)

Who are these thousands of the "best intelligence workers" (whatever THAT means) who have confirmed this tape from a dead man?

You do realize that there are many experts in counter-terrorism who also say Bin Laden is dead? And yet you dispute that. Almost too sad to be funny -- almost.  It's almost as if you choose to beleive one set of experts over another set of experts. Wow. Imagine that.

Now I admit I have no idea whether Bin Laden is dead, though I tend to agree with those who think he is currently in hell.

One thing that makes me think this, are the crap videos which have been released for the past few years. The odd editing; the fact that he appears to be growing younger (isn't time linear but forward?); little stuff like that.

Man I can get better quality using my cell phone.

You can get a $200 camcorder that gives near-broadcast quality and al-Kayda release something that doesn't look good enough for YouTube. Excuse me while I query the versimilitude and veracity of this.

But it is nice to know that you know the truth. Well done.

Its OK

Its ok to think I'm crazy. I felt kinda truthery about my skeptism myself. I just have to speak my mind...and honestly still think I'm right. For everyone that says...what does it matter? It really doesn't in the sense that it was most likely his voice and the message was what mattered. However, it does matter on one point. Are they hiding something? Is he frail and dying? Does this tape support that theory?

John -- I was aiming my

Once again our

Once again our "intelligence" agencies have shown to be pretty pathetic. This is just like when a handwriting analyst showed that Vince Foster's "suicide note" back in 1993 was forged, but the FBI claimed it to be legitimate.

And the Democrats want this kind of government running every portion of our lives? You'd think people would wake up.
