Krauthammer: 'Obama Agenda is Dead,' 'He Tried a 2-Year Experiment in Hyper-Liberalism and the Country Has said No'

By Jeff Poor | November 03, 2010 | 01:01

So what should be made of the historic midterm election of 2010?

While all the pundits try to analyze polling data and read between the lines, syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor Charles Krauthammer has a clearer view. In his view, President Barack Obama’s so-called hope and change agenda is dead and it’s up to Obama to determine his direction.

Video Below Fold

“I think that the message is unmistakable that the Obama agenda is dead,” Krauthammer said on the Fox News Channel’s early morning coverage on Nov 3. “The question is how much of it is going to be repealed and how much will Obama be willing to concede. It’s clear as you projected the house is going to be Republican. I think what is going to happen is the Republicans are not going to win the Senate.”

But Krauthammer explained the GOP didn’t necessarily have to control the Senate to move legislation through.

“But I think they're going to have de facto control of the Senate in the sense that there were going to be several Democratic senators that are going to be up for re-election in two years,” he continued. “I'm thinking of a Jim Webb from Virginia. I’m thinking of some of the others. There are going to be more Democrats up for re-election than Republicans in two years in the Senate, and they’re looking at the fate of those Democrats who went with the president with his agenda and walked the plank and are now gone, and they're not going to go. And I think there will be great resistance in the Senate to any advance of the Obama agenda.”

Among the issues the Republicans could make gains on include the Bush tax cuts and the expansion of government into health care, Krauthammer explained.

“And I think there will be a lot of sympathy among these Democrats, the ones who are now up for re-election in two years – for example, for the extension of the Bush tax cuts, and even the nibbling away at the edges of ObamaCare,” Krauthammer said. “So I think what’s happened is you have had a real shift of power to the Republicans, de jure in the House, and de facto in the Senate. But if you're Republican, I think it works rather well in terms of strategy for ‘12. You really didn't the control of the two houses because then Obama could do a Truman where he ran against the do-nothing Congress and ran for re-election. If you put too much of the actual official power in the hands of the Republicans, it makes them responsible. Right now, I think they're in perfect position tactically. Control the House, object, propose stuff that Obama may veto and run on that against him in 2012.”

But Krauthammer indicated that the last two cycles were an anomaly – more of a result of unusual historic events and now we’re in a sort of correction and coming back to balance.

“Well, I think people are saying, you know it’s the internet, it’s the speeding up of the news, it’s the fickleness electorate,” Krauthammer said. “I'm not sure I accept that. I think there's a historical event. There was a war that went bad in Iraq that destroyed the Republicans. There was a financial collapse – very unusual, the first time in 70 years which undid the Republicans, but also left of the Democrats in a position where they had no easy answers on the American economy, and thus are suffering today. I think these are extraordinary historical events. I think what we’re seeing now is a return to the norm. We are roughly where we were in the early part of this decade. If you look at the map - that's the map the way that we have had it for roughly the last 30 years. ‘06 and ‘08 were somewhat of an aberration – a response to historical events that were unusual and now we have a return.”

The bottom line according to Krauthammer: The American people have rejected Obama’s ideology and the question remains – can he moderate?

“So now I think we are near the norm,” he said. “I'm not sure this is, you know a sign of an electorate that's completely unreliable. This is where we are, and now it will depend on how Obama proceeds. He has now tried a two-year experiment in hyper-liberalism, and the country has said no. I think he has got a choice ahead of him and I think even though he's inclined ideologically intrinsically to go left. I think he’s going to try to go to the center, and the question is can a man of the left pretend at least or try pragmatically to go to the center. I'm not sure that anyone knows the answer.”

He knows it.  Make no

Submitted by mattm on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 9:11pm.

He knows it.  Make no mistake.  Obama is well aware of the fact that most Americans do not want socialism, and that the ones who think they do, wouldn't think so if they weren't brainwashed little sheep.  But people like Obama (I mean arrogant tyrannical marxists for all you race mongers out there) don't really give a damn what the people want - they know better...

I wanna think that 'he knows

Submitted by killa37 on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 12:05am.

I wanna think that 'he knows it'.........and he just might. But I also think that the guy is so perfectly brainwashed, and is such an unbendable idealogue, that he actually continues to think that he is RIGHT........and the people who are WRONG are US!!!!! And I think I caught a little of that this morning in a couple comments he made during his 'press conference'.............he was sleazy and slick and said some things designed to sound deferential.........but when you parse through it, he didn't give anything away, with regards to sticking to his agenda. I'm not holding my breath for this creep to make any moves towards us.........and to tell you the truth..........I DON'T WANT  him to!!! I want him to keep being the way he is, and I want US to keep paying attention to it!!!

The answer is 'no'!! This

Submitted by killa37 on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 1:55am.

The answer is 'no'!! This brainwashed poser is incapable of realizing what is going on, and he's too self-absorbed and delusional  to do anything about it anyway...........even if he APPEARED to be understanding the situation, I wouldn't trust him for one second!!! I can throw this skinny punk farther than I can believe anything that comes out of his mouth, except when he is OFF teleprompter, and ACTUALLY saying what he believes - which always gets him in trouble!!!

Anyway, he is off with 40 planes and 3,000 people and 500+ rooms booked, with an auditorium re-done to accomodate the teleprompters.......to India...........at a pricetag of $200 million a day. Why the hell should he give a rat's rear end??? I think he wanted to reduce the Democrat party to shambles anyway............now he only has ONE 'enemy'............the Republicans and the people of the United States.

And..............watch out for all of the bitter libs before Dec. 31..........they are NOT happy that they got run out of town and tarred and feathered, and they MAY want to make all of us 'great unwashed' pay a hard, heavy price..................

Republicans should make this trip Issue 1!

Submitted by Red Jeep on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 8:39pm.

This should be a winning first issue for the Republicans, controlling Presidential tourism.

What is so damn important about this visit to India? Is there really pressing business there or is this part of Michelle's world tour?

What controls are there on these trips? What's to stop Barry from doing this once a month or every 2 weeks at 200 million a day?

Maybe it is time that the Republicans enacted some control over these trips. This issue certainly would resonate with the common man out there struggling to make ends meet.

And..........I just read about the 34 Navy ships going with Boy Blunder..........what the hell is THAT going to cost??? And you know what kind of 'prep work' has to happen before he shows up, usually at the expense of the normal, everyday life of the people who live there...........

He says he speaks Indonesian.........we'll see how that plays out when he goes to the country of his Muslim upbringing..........where he learned how to speak Arabic when reciting the Koran, and hearing the 'sweetest sound in the world'...................

Harry Reid doesn't matter now.

Deprived of his supermajority and without Pelosi controlling the House, he's inconsequential. Yeah, he can still enable Obama to make recess appointments, but that's going to hurt Obama in the long run.

Tell ME something I don't know...

Submitted by NevadanConservative on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 4:19am.

That waste of space did NOT manage to shoehorn his pathetic little fifth carbon copy of a son into becoming governor. The failure is here in Vegas. We did not get rid of Berkely (gee thanks SEIU) and we did not get rid of Filthy Harry.

By and large the rest of the state was ready to give the little creep the old heave-ho, but here in Vegas is the state's largest concentration of government dependent lazy bastids. No more gummint goodies without ol' Filthy... at the time of this writing I see three outstanding seats left in the Senate, the ratio now being 51/46. When he goes back he goes back to a depleted majority, and likely a willing whipping boy for Obama.

I still say ( and have said over the past several months ) that the Tea Party and GOP -should- within the next 24 to 72 hours start getting things fired up for 2012. Time is the one thing the authoritarians did NOT co-opt, cannot take away from us, cannot bribe.

In the interim... It appears we will BE the party of NO! and we had best to do a real good job of gumming things up for the authoritarians.

My vote was NOT wasted.

Obama the lame duck!

Submitted by Phryj1 on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 2:43am.

Finally, the worst is over and there's light at the end of the tunnel!

Obama will be a lame duck for the remainder of his "historic presidency", and the far-left agenda is dead in the water. It's now much easier for the GOP to filibuster any lingering Democrat Senate bills AND with control of the house, the GOP has the initiative to start driving the country towards recovery.

But perhaps most importantly, QUEEN NANCY HAS BEEN DETHRONED!!! Yay!

Progressives seem to be completely averse to facts and logic. Apparently, reality has a conservative bias.

Too many California and New York voters: dumb and dumber!

Submitted by Mary Louise Turner on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 6:42pm.

Too many California and New York voters proved that they are "dumb and dumber" by entering a 1960's or 1970's time warp.  By returning "Governor Moonbeam" to office and re-electing Barbara Boxer, the sheeple have spoken!

As for us in New York, we're got Mario Jr. (Andrew) as governor and Chuck and his sock puppet Kirsten in the Senate.  Yikes!   Shame on us...

Sorry, Mary Louise---

Submitted by matthewdean on Wed, 11/03/2010 - 7:11pm.

but you place California voters way too high on the intelligence list.

Brown and Boxer are in, and that pos Gavin Newsom, last I heard, was in the lead for Lt. Governor.  If that slime snakes his way to Sacramento, the mess this State is in now will appear to have been Utopia by the time he and Brown are done with it.

While I can't speak for Noo Yawk, I can affirm that the IQs of the liberal  voters in CA start out at dumbest and begin a rapid descent from there into insanity.

California is doomed

Submitted by Student1776 on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 3:49pm.

The state legislature has decade by decade drained the vitality from what used to be the Golden State. Schwartzenegger tried to reform and restrain it but bounced off. Brown is one of them, indeed he was there at the beginning of the ascendency of the government of the parasites, by the parasites and for the parasites that killed California. With Brown as Governor the last lever of control over the legislature and their masters in the government unions, especially the teachers union, are over. From here on in it is about the government and the government unions sacrificing every business, every producer, every creator in an ever quickening cycle of destruction - doubtless all the way blaming the victim by decrying the greedy capitalists. California is a mini-example of Atlas Shrugged in operation. Soooooo sad.

The interesting question

Submitted by Student1776 on Thu, 11/04/2010 - 4:02pm.

Watching Obama in action as he has in one stupid action after another aborted the upturn that started in 2Q09 and produced the current stagnation threatening to become a double-dip recession the question has been which of three explanations is true: (1) Obama is a superficially glib guy who sounded good and rationally moderate on a podium but had never led a real organization, who surrounded himself with the wrong advisors and outsourced his program to a bunch of hack politicians who used him as a shill so they could spend >$2 trillion on their wish list or pork OR (2) Obama was hard core socialist with Marxist thought processes from his SDS/Ayers/Rev Wright/community organized who understood Alinsky style that he had to pretend to be a moderate to get elected but who once in power thought that application of his Marxist ideas by massively expanding government, spending trillions on give aways to his banker donors, to government unions and the UAW, by initiating the processes to create government control of the banking (BOA/Citi), insurance (AGI), manufacturing (GM. CHRYS), and healthcare systems , and by unsealing the border to allow America to be flooded with millions of people who grew up in a failed socialist state and then making them citizens to give him a permanent Democrat majority would allow him to usher in the promised land of a Socialist America or (3) Obama was alienated from American from his youth, dreamed the anti-colonial dreams of his Father to break the back of the greatest western country, merged this with an alliance with the global left to undermine Israel and weaken America globally, and is quite consciously using his position to cripple the greatest Western power out of a personal alliance to Marxism or perhaps (though I doubt it) to Islam. Anyway, the man is not stupid. There is a reason for his incredibly stupid actions. We will know soon. If it is reason (1) he will take a wake up call and make the moves to change advisors and salvage his Presidency (as seems in part to be happening in so far as his advisors are all leaving. If it is reason (2) he will continue with his prior policies and push on legalizing tens of millions of immigrants to support the socialization of America. If it is reason (3) he will intensify his efforts. We will have clarity on this by March.
