Krauthammer: W.H. Chamber Accusations 'Reptilian Desperation,' 'Oozes of Slime and Innuendo'

By Jeff Poor | October 11, 2010 | 23:50

Albert Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. And so goes the White House with these attacks on the U.S. Chamber of Commerce drummed up by the “professional left’s” blogosphere that it is using foreign donations to finance political advertising.

Syndicated columnist Charles Krauthammer however, had another take on what these attacks are. He said they’re not insane, but desperation of one of the highest degrees. During the Oct. 11 broadcast of Fox News Channel’s “Special Report with Bret Baier,” Krauthammer attacked the Obama administration, calling this campaign against the Chamber “reptilian desperation.”

Video Below the Fold

“Well, there's desperation and then there's reptilian desperation – and this is the reptilian variety,” Krauthammer said. “This thing just oozes of slime and innuendo, and it's McCarthyite. You make an accusation that the other side is using foreign funds. You don't have a shred of evidence and you answer, like Axelrod, 'Well, what's your evidence?' which is what McCarthy did. You'd raise suspicions about someone and the objective is not to actually make a case. It's to raise suspicions and leave them hanging out there."

Krauthammer explained how the Chamber’s overseas affiliates work and said it was a very low percentage of its operating budget. He also explained it was no different than what left-wing groups do but are rarely criticized for.

“Here are the facts,” he said. “The Chamber of Commerce has 110 overseas affiliates, which give annual dues and it is peanuts. It is one-half of one-tenth of 1 percent of its budget. Also, as the New York Times has written, not me and not other right-wing troglodytes – they’ve written that this practice of getting dues from overseas associations is not illegal, it’s not improper and it’s not unusual. We heard earlier in the show the Sierra Club and the AFL-CIO also have overseas affiliates, which give dues and they engage in political activity. The money from the overseas affiliates is segregated and not used in politics.”

He also noted the irony in Obama’s accusations, coming off his “citizen of the world” tour back during the 2008 presidential campaign.

“The accusation here is the money is being used again without a shred of evidence. And the irony here is that Obama is the man that ran on hope and change and this is a pure appeal to xenophobic fear,” he continued. “Secondly, here’s a man who said we have to be one with the world. He stands up in Berlin two years ago in a rally of swooning, cheering Germans and what does he say? ‘I’m a citizen of the world and now his use of the world is as a weapon. The foreigners – the sinister foreigners are influencing our elections in a secret way, again without s shred of evidence.”

Jonah Goldberg, editor-at-large at National Review, agreed with Krauthammer’s view and pointed out that even the left-of-center New York Times failed to find fault with the Chamber’s practices, even though the White House is continuing to push the meme there is the possibility of foreign money influencing American elections.

“I think that this is a disastrous move,” Goldberg said. “I agree entirely with Charles it has a McCarthyite stink to it. And also, I think when The New York Times raps you on the nose with a rolled-up newspaper, it says stop doing something, then you keep doing it – it tends to make that part of the establishment angry.”

Goldberg’s observation – with President Barack Obama and his operatives pushing the meme, it comes off like the White House is hung up on the left-wing blogosphere.

“And I think what you’re going to see, I mean it is amazing how this president has managed to alienate not just his enemies, but friends,” Goldberg said. “This is such a sad farcical display that we’re seeing from these guys where they know it’s not true. It really gives the impression that the President of the United States is sitting around reading obscure left-wing blogs.”

Somebody show me how to post a damn comment with this new setup!!! I like Mr. Shy just fine.....but we've got some issues here!!!

As far as 'the Hammer' goes..........when he speaks, I listen!!! He was a little slow to pick up on Boy Blunder's 'real' agenda, but once he figured it out, it's full speed ahead and damn the torpedoes!!! The Hammer is one of the smartest and most sensical people that I've heard in this, or any, political climate.............and he doesn't shill for any dogma either - he just lays it out there, plain and simple...................

Rabble, rabble, rabble and never offer solutions to solve any problem.  The fact that he has never gotten ANYWHERE without affirmative action shows his immense weakness as POTUS.  How dare anyone question his "authoritae"?  He is nothing but a FOOL and his ramblings reveal his naivete'.  He is NOT a  man but a child with a title.  Throw as much s*it on the wall and see if it sticks, and it goes on and on.  The Dims are TOAST!!  Weak minded cowards!  VOTE on Nov. 2!!

Once again the damn

Submitted by DontFeedTheTrolls on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 6:00am.

Once again the damn Republicans blew it. They should have brought up the $300,000,000 (?) that Obama got from overseas CC donations in 2008. I know the Dems said 'well that's from Americans living overseas' but the R's should have pushed it and pushed it hard and damn the race card that would have been thrown. Now they have little ammo.

P.S. I still don't like this new site and it's 'features', like all the wasted space and the ridiculous 'share' button. Sheesh!

Republicans are always slow

Submitted by motherbelt on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 7:02am.

Republicans are always slow off the mark on stuff like that.  By the time they get their act together the damage has been done and they are a day late and a dollar short.

On your technical issue, I agree about the "share" button.  Who cares.  Some time technology is just too much technology.  Does everything have to have a link to Facebook and all those other social networks???

Besides, the "share" button is too close to the "read more" link.  Every time I try to click "read more" I slide past the "share" and it lights up.

Rove made a good point

Submitted by KC Mulville on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 7:32am.

Monday Night Football was particularly dull last night, at least early in the game (later it got better). The Braves-Giants game was in commercial. So I was hunting for something to watch instead of commercials, and happened to catch Karl Rove on Hannity, just when Hannity asked a good question:

Well, why doesn't the Chamber of Commerce open its donor list?

Rove supplied an excellent answer. The original law was intended to protect donors from retaliation. It was passed in the civil rights era when contributing to the cause of civil rights left you vulnerable to racist backlash. They keep the donors private to protect them.

That's what Rove said. What he didn't say was that the White House's reaction here shows why you need to keep them private. This White House is just that low, craven, and petty that it would retaliate against any business who would oppose it. The Obama Gang is so thin-skinned, and so ready to punish non-believers that they certainly would retaliate against opponents. Naturally, any group doing business with the government would fear retaliation -- losing contracts, losing bids, etc.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Obama Gang did this intentionally to smoke out the contributors. After all, Obama was a community organizer. This is the kind of thing community organizers are good at -- exploiting the system to its advantage.

Submitted by NevadanConservative on Tue, 10/12/2010 - 3:45pm.

These guys are wannabe dictators. (Yes, my same tired old drum, and its notes are sour... but to date they have not been reliably refuted.) Given the prize of absolute power, they will not cavil to use any tool, method, trick, to their ends.

In this case, it's a follow up from 2008 to shut those pesky peasants down and shut them up once and for all. All the marbles...and that "...last step into a thousand years of darkness."

For myself, I have volunteered with the local party... I don't own a car, I have some ready cash and a workable cell to hand. My town will NOT be made into a Philadelphia with brutes swinging nightsticks. If something like that starts, I will get in a cab, hitch, or run if that is what is needed, calling the newsmedia on the cell in transit, and the police as well (electioneering is a felony), and I will do what it takes within the law to stop it.

For all of that... as stated, these guys have no limits. If the earlies start going seriously against BHO and his crew, I would not even be a little surprised at his calling the results null, citing them as 'insurrection' or 'treason'. There are some on our side that worry that he might even call armed force down to 'insure' the elections are 'properly conducted'. Neither of these actions could be supported as anything but acts of a tyrant, in furtherance of its tyranny.
