It might be par for the course, but liberal cable talk show host Bill Maher has once again done his best to offend with a distasteful and insensitive wisecrack about the U.S. military.
Maher launched into a rant on his March 27 HBO show, "Real Time with Bill Maher" about American soldiers still stationed in Germany and Japan and took a swipe at the soldiers, insinuating they were rapists.
"Forget about bringing the troops home Iraq - we need to get the troops home from World War II," Maher said. "Can anybody tell me why in 2009, we still have more than 50,000 troops in Germany and 30,000 in Japan? At some point these people are going to have to learn to rape themselves."
The cheap shots didn't stop there. Maher continued his schtick to push his point.
"Our soldiers have been in Germany so long, they now wear shorts with black socks," Maher said. "You know that crazy soldier hiding in the cave on Iwo Jima who does know the war is over? That's us."
Former Army Staff Sergeant and author of "House to House" David Bellavia, who has been recommended for the Medal of Honor and is a recipient of the Silver Star and the Bronze Star didn't take Maher's criticism lightly.
"While Democrats want to accuse the right in America of being hijacked by the talking points of Rush Limbaugh and talk radio, it is more than a little odd to me that the greatest minds on the left today are community organizers, washed up former sports commentators and stand up comedians," Bellavia said. "It's insensitive and hurtful."
Bellavia, who was stationed in Germany for over three years, explained the German people did not blame the military for "these lone American incidents of barbaric aggression" and that many were thankful American soldiers took out their Nazi-led government.
"The fact is that the German people would be the first to protest our leaving their country," Bellavia said. "Areas like Vilseck would have no economy without American business and young foolish soldiers emptying their bank accounts on the German local scene."
The Fallujah veteran said he wasn't surprised by Maher remarks and explained many on the left like Maher don't understand the concept of military service.
"Neither here nor there - Maher's comments are nothing surprising to me," Bellavia added. "Newsflash - the left doesn't get the military. They don't understand how a person can see something bigger then themselves. And the vast majority of liberals have zero idea of what we face overseas and moreover, cannot understand any situation that could possibly involve taking the life at war. They never have. And they never will."
With this sort of rhetoric, Maher keeps adding to his record of tasteless quips. Last fall, Maher bought into the wild unsubstantiated claims that Sarah Palin's baby son was really her grandson. That earned Maher the 2009 MRC DisHonors Awards Quote of the Year award on March 20.

March 31, 2009 - 09:56 ET by dborschjr68It's comments like this that make me want to show Mr. Maher what I learned from being in the military for 11 years.
The arrogance and audacity on tap for him to say such a thing....it staggers my sense of decorum, decency, and courtesy.
Someday, Mr. Maher, you will reap the rewards of what your mouth has sown. God bless.

BHO will be in the bunker hiding.
So Mr Maher, be thankful there have been many of us on the WALL. to protect your sorry A$$. we forgive your ignorance but will never forget.

Bill Maher
March 31, 2009 - 10:05 ET by grumpyoldbMill Maher is a legend in his own mind. He is typical of the direspect that the left shows anyone, not just the military. His comments about the military, however, show just how limited his intelligence is. If not for the fine Men and Women of the United States Armed Forces, the world would be a much different and much more terrifying place than it is. I say God Bless every last one of them. As for Bill Maher, I think he should just go rape himself......
Reminds me of a long-winded insult
March 31, 2009 - 12:32 ET by WhoIsJohnGaltdelivered by a very Brooklyn-talking New York friend of mine. Once the offending party on the other end of the phone crossed the line and my friend felt that was no salvaging the relationship, he very calmy started out (imagine Joe Pesci starting clamly and softly and then building gradually to a loud and frightening Mob-style crescendo):
"Just do me 'dis one more favor, if you would pal...when you get off the phone with me I'd like you to do 'dis for me okay? Go over to the corner of your office, you know, d' one by d' window? Then turn around. And then turn around again. And then turn around again...and AGAIN AND AGAIN. AND 'DEN, IF YOU KEEP DOIN' 'DAT MAYBE IF YOU DO IT FAST ENOUGH YOU COULD TURN AROUND SO EFFIN' FAST THAT YOU COULD ACTUALLY F**K YOURSELF!!!!!
WHAM, he slammed the phone down. One of the best, albeit crude lines that I could remember if you wanna tell someone off.
Anyway, that's what I like to say to Bill Maher .

My own experience
March 31, 2009 - 11:02 ET by KC MulvilleI studied in Germany for an all-too-brief semester in the late 1980s. I'll testify to my own short experience there.
The basic problem with the American presence there is that it's filled with teenagers and kids in their early 20s. That age group, we all know, likes to raise hell on occasion. They occasionally have a drink or twelve, and Friday night can be a little wild. I'm not talking about rapes in this description, I'm just talking about the day to day experience of American soldiers among the population. Most of the Americans that the Germans see are twenty-year old kids, abroad for the first time, and that shows.
But, my experience was that the local Germans understood that. In fact, they were the ones who brought that to my attention. The locals don't hold it against the soldiers. In fact, they appreciate the presence. Second, the Americans have been a presence for so long that the vast majority of Germans weren't alive when the policy started. To most Germans (from the old West Germany, anyway), the Americans have always been there. It's just an accepted part of the routine. The American presence isn't an issue.
As my German hosts (the Jesuit community in Mannheim) said to me, the local Americans don't meddle locally. Sure, Washington DC plays a big part in German life, but that influence would continue whether the soldiers were in Germany or not. The local US soldiers don't bother with local politics, so the population doesn't see them as occupiers. The Americans are just sort of there.
If others have different experiences, fine. That was mine.
As for Maher, he's just an ass waiting to be slapped.
KC: Dirty little secret
March 31, 2009 - 11:20 ET by BDKC:
Dirty little secret is also that the American presence is desired by the local communities who make big bank on them.
The troops are generally less apt to violate laws than their average German counterpart of their age group, less mental illness etc, and are employed.
Communities that hosted the US military Kasernes such as Garstadt are suffering economically since the Bridage Combat Team from 2AD that was garrisoned there have departed. It is the equivalent of having 5000 tourists committed to your community 365 days a year.
True
March 31, 2009 - 11:25 ET by KC MulvilleYou're right. And it's also true that most cities in Europe generally depend much more on tourism than American cities do. That loss of "institutional" tourists (not to mention the families that come visit, etc.) is a much bigger chunk than Americans appreciate.
Correct. it is
March 31, 2009 - 14:58 ET by BDCorrect. it is interesting to note that when I entered service in the mid 80's we had four full combat divisions in Central Germany as well as a hy-brid brigade in Berlin, an armored brigade in NORTHAG, and the 1ID forward in Western western west Germany. All in all we had something like 350,000 soldiers stationed full time in Germany and other parts of NATO in europe.
Today we have 120,000+ in Iraq and it is seen by the left as if we have broken the bank to finance this. Ludicrous.
The Germans always could count on these 300K of pay checks on a month to month basis to float their economy each weekend as the troops descended to purchase beer, brotchen, and Schnitzel from the local economy.
In response the Germans have a squadron of trainee pilots in New Mexico and a few Patriot Operators going through training in Texas.
BD
March 31, 2009 - 11:31 ET by RESTLESS 1Another little secret it that the powers that be in Europe know damn well that our military enables their socialist economies. If not for our capitialist society, able to pay for the strongest military in the world, they would have to defend themselves. If not for our prescence over there, they would have to fund their own militaries for protection, hard to do when your socialist economy can't afford to do so.
I was listening to Bill Bennet on the way to work this morning, and Mark Steyn was on, saying essentially the same thing. The europeans want us there.
What's more, they know that if the 0 is successful in bringing about socialism here, their gravy train is over.
"This liberal would be all about socialize -- uh, uh, would be about basically taking over and the government running all of your companies."-Maxine Waters 2008
This is essentially correct,
March 31, 2009 - 15:06 ET by BDThis is essentially correct, and I will go one further. While the US essentially removed about half of our military at the end of the cold war (Going from an 18 Division force to about a 9+ division force), Europe went even further.
Germany had a larger standing army in the 1980's than we did, yet today cannot seem to scratch up enough combat power or transportaion assets to get their forces to Afghanistan. And once there they cannot seem to et up the gumption to do anything meaningful with them.
Germany has experimented with a rapid deployment force on the border of france that would couple a German Battalion with a French Battalion to create a brigade sized firce for just such contingencies - yet they have even been unsuccessful at that.
Welfare kills.
