Not this again. With Democrats in control of Washington, the possibility of the reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine is getting stronger and the rhetoric is getting bolder. But this time, it's getting attention on the state level - the biggest state.
Former Democratic California governor and current Attorney General Jerry Brown appeared on conservative talk host Michael Savage's radio show on Feb. 13. One of the issues the two debated was the possibility of the renewal of the Fairness Doctrine. During the interview, Savage noted that Brown sounded as if he wanted state control over the media.
"Well, a little state control wouldn't hurt anybody," Brown replied.
Brown rationalized his view by citing a quote that state control would be an attempt to balance, not to censor.
"Stockton used to say, ‘If you have no views of one side, like in certain campaigns if somebody is attacking you, there's got to be some room for the other side,'" Brown explained. "It's an attempt to balance, not to censor."
Savage was skeptical of Brown's explanation and said if that were true, he would get airtime on National Public Radio, which he doubted were the intentions of Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif. and former President Bill Clinton when they made their remarks in favor of the Fairness Doctrine. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, also came out openly in favor of the Fairness Doctrine recently.
Savage told Brown the Fairness Doctrine was nothing more than an attempt to silence Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and himself among the other top talk radio hosts. Eight of the top 10 of the Talkers Magazine "2008 Heavy Hundred" are considered right-of-center, including Limbaugh, Hannity, Savage, Dr. Laura Schlessinger, Glenn Beck, Laura Ingraham, Mike Gallagher and Neal Boortz.

OK, I'm set now.
Brown's explanation is just so much B as in B, S as in S. He knows darn well it has nothing to do with "balance."
It's the censorship of prior restraint. If radio stations won't carry left-wing talk shows because they cost them money, then they'll have to quit carrying conservative commentators!
It's that simple.

And they love the word compromise, just as long as we understand it means that we give up everything to them. Obama said it best -- we won! What he really meant was "surrender, or we'll take it all from you".
It's going to be a long 4 years (it's already been a long month). And I wonder how much of our freedom will be sacrificed along the way. And whether our elected representatives will be standing in front of the line with boxes of stuff (e.g., freedom of speech; right to life and liberty; right to bear arms) they want to donate to Obama's cause.

We already lost the big battle. This one not so big.
Sun, 02/15/2009 - 10:03 ET by JWFWe lost the big stimulus battle. Thanks to 3 turncoats. That was a punch in the gut.
We lost the little battles over Gitmo and bringing terrorists to Justice. That did not hurt so much. Because, now they have to figure out where they are going to put these nasty little thugs and what they are going to do with them once they do. We do not want them here in the U.S. We do not want to send them to other countrie because then they would be subjected to THEIR laws and public opinion. Bush & Co had a pretty good compromise and Uncle Dummy blew it with his decision to follow the ultra left.
Now we have the mid-sized battle called the fairness doctrine. Democrats do not learn from history nor do the people that vote them in. Otherwise they would know that socialism does not work. They would huge government spending does not work. You are borrowing from future voters to spend on today's voters. Trying to censor your critics does not work. It did not work in Soviet Russia. It did not work with Howard Stern. Remember him? They were attempting to shut him down. Not for left/right issues, but still attempting to get him off the airwaves. He gave them the finger and went to sattellite radio.
Democrats do not understand natural laws either. One is the law of unintended consequences. Radio will not go to a half liberal loony/half conservative format. They will just go out of business or go to all music AND STILL GO OUT OF BUSINESS. No one listens to music on the radio any more. This is not 1976. There is no TOP 40. Music listeners are fragmented now thanks to the internet, 500 cable channels, and dearth of people with actual talent.
Meanwhile, we will still get conservative voices. They will move to satellite radio, or the internet, or TV. Hannity already has a show. Beck has a show. I get Levin off his website. I would pay the $60 a year to get Rush off his website. Don't forget the huge amount of written marterial all over teh webs. Including the bestest website ever NewsBusters!
So I will laugh at a a new fariness doctrine just like I laughed at the Gitmo stuff. GOOD LUCK WITH THAT BONEHEADS. How is that working for you huh? You get the opposition shut down did you? NO? Hmmmm. I wonder why.
Meanwhile, we need to gear up for the next real BIG battle. Card check. That one we need to fight hard.
Sincerely,
a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Sun, 02/15/2009 - 10:31 ET by eaglewingz08The dems will try to include the internet and cable as well. They are crazy. They hate markets because markets are about people making choices and dems are anti choice. Counterintuitive given that they call themselves pro choice (but they are really pro death stalinists and hate the fact that people are free) As Ron Reagan said the choice is not right or left but freedom or slavery. Dems have always been slavers and always will be.

Sun, 02/15/2009 - 11:18 ET by nkviking75Eaglewingz is right. If the libs get away with silencing talk radio, they'll come after any alternative media conservatives dominate. The Democrats are tyrants. If we don't stop them here, we may need to have a revolution to get our freedom back.

Sun, 02/15/2009 - 12:36 ET by JWFI called. I faxed. I was screaming at the TV angry. All for nothing. They still had the numbers to pass the Poobox stimulus bill.
Why was I so angry. Because I know they were WRONG. The money is going to have to be payed back through taxes or inflation or both. This will bounce back against ALL of us not just the democrats.
They will have the numbers to pass a fairness doctrine even if we call and fax and rage again. And again we know they will be WRONG. But like closing Gitmo, this can only bounce back against them.
Remember they want to bring BACK the fairness bill, it has been tried once and FAILED. We still got Ronald Reagan despite it. We still got the current crop of idiots in Congress and the White House without it.
So they will bring it back and the result will be killing off what is left of Radio. SiriusXM will come out of bankruptcy even stronger than ever. Information like electricity will follow the path of least resistance and we will still get the info we need.
And like the closing of Gitmo, I will only laugh if they start talking about controlling the internet. Ha. Good luck with that. They will have to grow government to about twice the size if they want to enforce anything on the internet.
Sincerely,
a Veteran of a 1000 psychic wars.

Sun, 02/15/2009 - 13:23 ET by mothergooseFirst of all since flag burning has been ruled "symbolic" speech, I have a hard time understanding why broadcasting isn't covered under "symbolic" press...........and if not, it is surely speech. I am aware of all the public airwaves arguments...don't tell me that. Secondly, the constitution says the government shall make no laws, does it not? Does it say the government shall make "balancing" laws? If only the speech/press that you agree with is free, there is no freedom at all. And thirdly..............I am getting frightened.

But, that's OK. Everybody knows Socialism works great everywhere else in the world so it's time for the U.S. to quit living in the stone age and catch up. Uh huh.
Unfortunately, with the Bush-Paulson bailout fiasco the Communists can always point the finger and say, "Well, wasn't that socialist?"
No. Panicking because they felt that government had to do something but not knowing really what does not define a Leftist ideology on the part of the Bush Administration. It just shows lack of adherence to Conservative values and faith in free enterprise (albeit a free enterprise system damaged by Communists in Congress). More of a stumbling than acceptance of Brother Marx.

Well, a little state
Sun, 02/15/2009 - 15:40 ET by fitzfongWell, a little state control wouldn't hurt anybody
Oh, really? Seems to me the a "little" state control (you know, like the union-dominated school system, the subsidies to illegal aliens, the out-of-control taxes, the negative influence of the trial lawyers and the unsustainable cost of doing business due to unreasonable regulation) has absolutely ruined the once-great State that Brown almost ruined in the '70s.
If you have no views of one side, like in certain campaigns if somebody is attacking you, there's got to be some room for the other side
There's plenty of room for the "other" side. How many frequencies are there on the AM Radio dial? Liberal talk radio is not an absolute failure because Conservative talk radio has conspired to keep it off the air. Liberal talk radio is an absolute failure because it sucks...the hosts have not talent, the ideology is intellectually vacant, the content is not entertaining. Conservative talk radio is simply a superior product.
It's an attempt to balance, not to censor.
No, it's an attempt to neutralize. Liberal talk radio is garbage. It's a failure. It's unwanted in an open market. The public has decided that, on the whole, it is not interested in Left-wing talk radio. Liberals have decided that if people choose conservative talk radio over liberal talk radio, the objective is to "level the playing field"...not by improving liberal talk radio, but by siphoning from conservative talk radio.
