Top 100 Radio Host List, Dominated By Conservatives -- Rush #1

Talkers Magazine has put out their "2008 Heavy Hundred" list rating radio talk show hosts across the country and one thing is obvious, conservatives still reign supreme in radio.

The top ten includes one "progressive" (Ed Schultz) and one shock jock (Don Imus), but is otherwise dominated by conservatives. The rest of the list has a smattering of sports guys and a very few more left-talkers, but just as in the top ten, much of the other 90 slots are dominated by conservatives.

#1- Rush Limbaugh, #2- Sean Hannity, #3- Michael Savage, #4- Dr. Laura Schlessinger, #5- Glenn Beck, # 6- Laura Ingraham, #7- Don Imus, #8- Ed Schultz, #9- Mike Gallagher, #10- Neal Boortz

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

In an interview with CNSNews.com, Talkers Mag Editor Michael Harrison discussed the loss of traction seen by several well-known left-talkers.

Two of the most popular liberal hosts on the list lost ground in the ratings compared to last year. North Dakota-based Ed Schultz dropped from fifth to eighth. Air America Radio's Randi Rhodes plummeted from 13th to 40th place.

Amusingly, Harrison tried to soft peddle the loss of status that progressive talkers have seen over the last year.

Harrison explained that determining liberal hosts' positions on the list was more difficult than placing conservatives.

"It's a very subjective thing, determining the popularity of liberal hosts, because they have this sort of alternate universe they operate in," he said. "They have more importance because they're not a dime-a-dozen like so many conservatives out there."

I assume that was an effort by the Editor to forestall attacks for being "unfair" to left-talkers. Whatever the case, they fell in status and that cannot be papered over.

So, congratulations to the conservative talk radio stars that once again made the top 100 list and it shows that conservatism isn't a dead issue despite how badly Congress has muffed it for us all.

I always wanted to get into politics, but I was never light enough to make the team.

Hannity #2??

Sean repeats his "talking points" so often, I get tired of listening to him. Also, frustrating when a caller asks a question and instead of answering, off he goes onto another one of his 'canned' statements. It is almost like he is not even listening to the caller...
I wish Rush was on during afternoon drive time...

Hey SJ, was thinking the same thing

I've gotten the feeling that Sean wants to do so much, he doesn't take the time to HEAR what the callers are saying. The best talkers are the best LISTENERS. (inside comment for the others in NJ, Jim Garhardt does the same thing)

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

agree - Gearhart

Jim is just like Sean....

(as an aside, I really miss Deminski & Doyle - they were so much better than the jokers on in the afternoon now)

Nothing but RINOs in '08 - Grrrr!

SJ -

I pretty much stopped listening to Sean months ago (and only seldom check-in on his TV show).  Began to sound as if he was on a "loop" (radio/production jargon) ... and by 3:00 I've had my fill ... Quinn/Rose out of Pittsburgh in the early a.m., Beck for the rest of the a.m., then Rush until 3:00 p.m. ... I'm done after that.  And even these shows I have on in the background ... unless something different and important is breaking, then I'm ALL ears.

When you men get home and face an anti-war protestor, look him in the eyes and shake his hand. Then, wink at his girlfriend because she knows she’s dating a pussy… ~ Attributed to General Tommy Franks

Quinn & Rose.....#1 on my list

Especially coming out of such a Democratic stronghold as Pittsburgh. Interesting.......Pittsburgh is where Rush got his radio start. They don't call it the City of Champions for nothing!!

The fact that Savage is #3

The fact that Savage is #3 is very, very disturbing.

Not really.

You can tell it's totally-subjective if a Sirius show with a bigger all-paid audience than some of the top 10 is #13. Hell, I'm not much on old radio these days, but I've never even heard of #12...
JMR

If this is winning, I think I'd rather lose...

Get  used to Savage being

Get  used to Savage being there. He may not always use words I would hope, but his substance thunders with me.

Ever hear him read from Scripture and make commentary? You could do worse than acquaint yourself, and imho I wonder just how often you have actually tuned in to MS. I would suspect from reading your posts, most of your info comes from msm instead.

I've listened to Savage,

I've listened to Savage, enough to know he's as close to a raving lunatic as you'll find on the radio.

One of the last things I need to do is listen to someone like him read to me from the bible.

Balboa

B,

You think Savage is a raving lunatic? He's a lot of things, but certainly not that.

This is a brilliant, highly-educated, well-read person that just so happens to have strong opinions -- many of them inflammatory -- that you don't agree with. However, that does not make him a lunatic.

Frankly, I'm surprised you can't see the intellect driving the opinions. ns

Maybe I caught him on a bad

Maybe I caught him on a bad couple of days.

Bal,

I didn't like Michael Savage the first couple of times I listened to his show, either. Quite frankly, I thought him to be off his rocker. Way off. But after listening to three or four shows, I began to see the genius behind the man. After the first week, I was hooked.

Like many highly intelligent people, Michael tends to be somewhat eccentric at times, but behind those eccentricities lies a very passionate, yet uncompromising person. He does not suffer fools well.

Many talk show hosts like Rush, Sean and Neal, will toy with their less intelligent callers for a while, and this does make for entertaining radio at times. Michael, however, generaly blows them off rather quickly, and, on occasion, he will fly off on a short, but very passionate rant. At first, this came across as a little rude to me. Now I see it as a rather endearing trait.

Michael also is willing to put his money where his mouth is, in that he contributed a great deal of his own money for the defense of some of the Haditha Marines. He did this even though many people had essentially thrown them under the proverbial bus. I didn't see Rush or Sean doing anything other than give lip service to the cases.

He has also gone after the CAIR crowd, who have been trying to get him, along with some other radio hosts, taken off the air for saying things about the "religion" of Islam that the Islamists would rather not be discussed. Unlike many in this country, Michael fully understands the very real dangers to our freedoms that organizations like CAIR pose.

Michael is probably the highest educated talker going, and has a grasp of history that does well beyond anyone else on radio. He has the unique ability to inject a historical perspective into any current event topic, and when doing so goes beyond the generalities that most others do when attempting same.

He is also an excellent judge of people. I read his book, The Political Zoo, and the characterizations he put forth were dead on. He sees things in ways most people cannot, as his mind ranges much farther than most.

Give the man a chance. Who knows, you might even learn a thing or two along the way.

Maybe I have yet to catch him on one of his "brilliant" days.

I can't believe what I'm reading...

Noel,

You have got to be kidding. This is one of the most asinine statements I have read from a staffer here at NB. While Savage may not necessarily be a lunatic, he certainly makes lunatic statements. Bill O'Reilly even called Savage "looney."

And, me personally, I have listened to him extensively. I used to enjoy his show and tune in every night, then he started losin' it. He went for far too much flash (ratings) and not enough substance (intellect).

Savage's statements and opinions are beyond "intellect-driven." Sure, he occasionally will make a rational argument, but on too many issues he discredits any rationale he has by making the most ridiculous statements one could think of.

He is a warmonger who preaches hate. He pretends to be a Christian when in reality, his values are inconsistent with a lot of the Bible and the majority of the Christians in this country. The only way he would be welcome at my church would be so we could pray for him.

Go ahead and go to Wikiquote and remind yourself of some of his work.

http://en.wikiquote....

I'll give a few examples... let's start with, say...

"I tell you right now- the largest percentage of Americans would like to see a nuclear weapon dropped on a major Arab capital. They don't even care which one"
........

"You know, when I see a woman walking around with a burqa, I see a Nazi. That's what I see, how-do-you-like-that? A hateful Nazi who would like to cut your throat and kill your children...She's saying, 'You white moron, you, I'm going to kill you if I can.' That's how I see it!"

on the Democratic Party:

"I'm not voting for a party of ethnic minorities and women and immigrants. I will not do it."

on non-white immigrants:

"...when you bring immigrants in from Europe -- whether they be Irish, whether they be Italian, whether they be English, whether they be Romanian, whether they be Czechoslovakian, whether they be Italian, whether they be Yugoslavian, whether they be German -- they're from Europe, and there is a melting pot possibility. When you start bringing in masses of immigrants from everywhere on Earth, you don't have a melting pot; they cannot be melted into an American, and that's what's going on in the country today."

Please show me how to "see the intellect driving those opinions." You cannot tell me Savage represents true Conservative and/or Evangelical Christian values. With this last quote, Savage is basically saying Jesus, who of Middle Eastern descent, would not be able to be "melted into an American" because he's not white.

I have listened to Savage spew so much hate and hide behind the veil of Christianity that it sickens me. He does not represent Christians nor the Republican Party. It's sad that people like him cause others to think he represents the general GOP philosophy or Christian values. He is far from both.

And of course, you might argue that he does represent a lot of people because he has hundreds of thousands of loyal listeners everyday... well, so does Howard Stern.

Wisdom, you are way off base here.

First of all, no true conservative gives a flying flip what BOR says about anyone or anything. This man trashed the Swiftboat guys relentlessly during the 2004 elections. He also said some pretty nasty things about Neal Boortz and numerous other people I respect. He also has about as lose a grip on enonomic matters as your average democrat. His only redeeming quality is his work to keep child predators behind bars.

He is a warmonger who preaches hate.

He is not a war monger. He whole-heartedly supports our efforts in the war against the Islamic supremecists. If that makes Savage a war monger, than I am one as well.

As for your assertion that he preaches hate, that is a load of BS in and of itself. Michael Savage, like some of us, fully understands who our real enemies are in this war. You are apparently clueless.

He pretends to be a Christian when in reality, his values are
inconsistent with a lot of the Bible and the majority of the Christians
in this country.

I am sorry, but Michael Savage has never claimed to be a Christian, as he is decidedly Jewish.

The only way he would be welcome at my church would be so we could pray for him

You must attend the same church as B. Hussein Obama.

And I just love how you cherry-picked the Wikki quotes attributed to him:

"I tell you right now- the largest percentage of Americans would
like to see a nuclear weapon dropped on a major Arab capital. They
don't even care which one"

I am not sure of the context in which this statement was made, but I know more than a few people who feel this way. Wait until a nuke is detonated over a major American population center and see how many will be in the streets demanding exactly this very thing. Many of us are getting totally fed up with these barbarians and are more than a little tired of our government conducting this war in a PC manner. Many of us want this thing to be over with. Soon.

"You know, when I see a woman walking around with a burqa, I see a
Nazi.......A hateful Nazi who would
like to cut your throat and kill your children...She's saying, 'You
white moron, you, I'm going to kill you if I can.

What makes you so sure that woman in the burqa isn't thinking exactly that? I can assure you she isn't doing anything to protest that actions of the more radical members of her "religion." Why should I think she disagrees with their actions.

"...when you bring immigrants in from Europe -- whether they be
Irish, whether they be Italian, whether they be English, whether they
be Romanian, whether they be Czechoslovakian, whether they be Italian,
whether they be Yugoslavian, whether they be German -- they're from
Europe, and there is a melting pot possibility. When you start bringing
in masses of immigrants from everywhere on Earth, you don't have a
melting pot; they cannot be melted into an American, and that's what's
going on in the country today."

First of all, you are the one who said this was a rant against non-whites, not Michael. And, in case it has escaped your attention, the current wave of criminal invaders flooding over our southern border are not exactly assimilating into our population. The Europeans did assimilate. I think Michael has a very valid point here.

With this last quote, Savage is basically saying Jesus, who of Middle
Eastern descent, would not be able to be "melted into an American"
because he's not white.

Really? I don't think that is what he is saying at all. Then again, reading comprehension is over-rated. The mental gymnastics you undertook to pull that BS out of his above quote must have been painful.

I hope you didn't strain anything.

Obama: Elect me and I'll lose the war AND raise your taxes! - Bryan/HotAir.com

"Noel,

"Noel,

You have got to be kidding. This is one of the most asinine statements I have read from a staffer here at NB."

Well, until your post anyway.

"Please show me how to "see the intellect driving those opinions." You
cannot tell me Savage represents true Conservative and/or Evangelical
Christian values."

I'm thinking maybe you should change your name to something more appropriate. I don't think Noel said that "Savage represents true Conservative and/or Evangelical
Christian values". Maybe he doesn't. That doesn't mean he isn't a highly intelligent man, which is what Noel DID say. It also doesn't mean he's wrong, either. Just because one isn't a "true" Conservative and/or an Evangelical Christian doesn't mean one can't be right. And just because one is those things doesn't mean one can't be wrong.

Still, it is comforting to know that you and your Evangelical brethren would be willing to at least allow Savage into your church long enough to be prayed for. Mighty compassionate of you.

By the way, not a Savage fan per se, but I do listen once in awhile. I find him funny more than anything, though, at times, he comes closer to the truth than some folks(like "Wisdom") want to admit.

PS.

Talk about "assinine". I think the following qualifies:

"With this last quote, Savage is basically
saying Jesus, who of Middle Eastern descent, would not be able to be
"melted into an American" because he's not white."

What a leap, lol. Sheesh, next you'll be telling us that Savage basically called Jesus a terrorist with that quote.

By the way, been paying attention to what's happening in Europe lately at all, by any chance? Maybe those were Swedes rioting in the streets in France because they didn't want to assimilate into French society.

I think Savage is not very

I think Savage is not very intelligent, regardless of how many times he tells me so. People like Rush have a set of beliefs based on core principles. Savage has mania and ego rapped in a thinly dressed contempt for anything he can't understand, which is quite a lot. He hears a word a caller uses and leaps to conclusions about the caller. He doesn't care what the caller is trying to say and sometimes I think he intentional misconstrues what they say to have an opportunity to strike.

He thinks he's brilliant and tells you about it every few minutes. I knew a few people like Savage in life and they are the ones who need to tell you about how much they own and what they are doing. If you tell him you just built a house he'll tell you why his is better and only fools build new houses. I agree with him about 75% of the time but he is far too protectionist for me and he takes everything a step too far.

Savage is intellectually Brilliant - Anti-Islam Rant

Savage is intellectually brilliant and very well educated: B.S. Biology, M.S. Anthropology, M.S. Ethnobotany, Ph.D. Nutritional Ethnomedicine. I don't always agree with everything he says but don't be fooled by his ranting - he is incredibly sarcastic and simple lets his emotions hang out on the air, it is a North East Coast thing (where he is from) that turns some people off because they don't get it, the same for people who take him literally 100% of the time. The best part about him is he says things people don't want to hear or would rather ignore.

Just listen to what he said that got a Terrorist funded group to go after his sponsers:

Norto,

I agree - I have heard him read Scripture and comment, and it is very chilling.

Sometimes I love him and find him very interesting (even when he's discussing food!) and sometimes I can't take much of him, but we can all agree that he DOES have passion.

He likes to push the envelope, that's for sure. Hope he wins his lawsuit against CAIR. Did you hear about the Danish newspapers all standing up? Yahoo....let's see more of it.

bal, Savage is an eccentric and then some.

But he understands, better than anyone else, this country's unique place in history.

He also understands that this country can be killed.

#7 Don Imus.......

Is no nappyheaded Shock Jock! If anything he's a Lib..oops I mean Progressive. The sad truth here is that while yes Cons ruled the radio airwaves they don't make much of a dent in the minds of most of the country. They're only preaching to their choir.

Two of the most popular

Two of the most popular liberal hosts on the list lost ground in the ratings compared to last year. North Dakota-based Ed Schultz dropped from fifth to eighth. Air America Radio's Randi Rhodes plummeted from 13th to 40th place.

I am ROFLMAO!

How are they gonna' blame this on Bush or a vast right wing conspiracy?

They can't...so they will attempt to bring up the Fairness Doctrine ...once again after the election, no matter who wins... IMHO.

Randi will have to blame it

Randi will have to blame it on the liquor and her dog...the vrwc turned out to be a damp squib.

Have you ever actually

Have you ever actually listened to Randi Rhodes' show?  It is the worst excuse for radio I have ever heard.  She is even rude to her own callers.  She is disgusting.  She doesn't deserve a show at all.

The fact that Savage is not

The fact that Savage is not number 2 on this list is disturbing.  And weren't we all just hammered with the "Rush has no clout anymore" crowd?  He has nearly 10% of the entire nation listening to him at any one time.

Fact is, you discount all the non-English speaking rascals in our country and it's even higher. Yeah, the MSM wishes it didn't have his clout...

Glad to see Michael

Glad to see Michael Smerconish is listed at #44. And Dennis Miller is right behind him.

All in all, a pretty interesting list. I was surprised Stern was as low as he was. Are they implying that his relevance has waned since going satellite?

I'd ask the question this way...

Are their ratings reflecting the relative size of old-radio ads vs Sirius ads in their little magazine? Not that I'd ever be suspicious and want folks to follow the money, but if we talk salaries-alone here, we seem to have a deep, unsolved fiscal mystery...

"They [liberal hosts] have more importance because they're not a dime-a-dozen like so many conservatives out there."

Excuse me? That's just totally bass ackwards. "Dime-a-dozen" hosts would have "dime-sized" audiences, simply because they are so plentiful and common. A "rare" [liberal] show would tend to have a larger audience based solely upon it's rareness, a large, concentrated audience that didn't have anywhere else to go to get that viewpoint.

Man, the lengths people will go to excuse the left's many failures.
