There's been a lot of news about Democratic senators supporting the reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine. Last week Sen. Debbie Stabenow, D-Mich., said it was "absolutely time to pass a standard." Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, came out with a similar message, saying, "We need the Fairness Doctrine back."
However, Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala., is serving as the voice of sanity in the debate and has pledged to lead a filibuster in the U.S. Senate against any attempt to reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine. He appeared in an interview on Mark Levin's Feb. 10 radio show.
"Let me ask you this Sen. Sessions," Levin said. "If they try to make a run at talk radio, whether it's the local rule or diversity of ownership, or equal this or equal that - will you lead a filibuster among others to try and stop that?"
"Absolutely," Sessions replied. "I think a lot of others will and it would be a terrible thing. The airwaves are open. Anybody can get on that has a following and can sell the ads and make the program go. People are not being denied the right to go on the radio. They're not denied the right to buy time on the radio. So for the government to come and say, ‘We think there's too much of this kind of opinion and not enough of the kind of opinion we like,' would be a very dangerous thing."

Dang it all...I must have
February 11, 2009 - 19:12 ET by bigtimerDang it all...I must have missed this already, listening to Levin now.
Nevertheless... Sessions is one of my favorite Senators, what he says, he means.
Thank God!
He was a leader among those on our side of the aisle to help stop the McC/Kennedy Amenesty Bill.
Sen. Jeff Sessions promised filibuster at risk.
February 11, 2009 - 19:16 ET by CTThe filibuster won't hold if the three senate RINOs get their rather large noses out of joint, were screwed!

Thanks, Senator Sessions!!!!

I would like to think that
February 11, 2009 - 22:03 ET by ThatDudeI would like to think that we at least have some blue dog democrats willing to go against this. It's an obvious violation of the first amendment and I can see less reason to support it than the waste bill just passed (not that it will work, but it makes the senators look like they care and are doing something)
No difference
February 12, 2009 - 11:33 ET by cvgbuckeyeCT: It makes no difference. IF THEY EVEN ACT LIKE they are making a move against free speech, That will trigger what is way overdue in this great country. We will not tolerate one more thing.
And that is a full blown American Revolution that will dwarf anything else in American History and I for one will abandon ALL OTHER pursuits in life to be RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE of it. AND the initial target lists are obvious.
I pledge this today. Radicalism, in the cause of our freedom, is no vice!
Congress won't be involved
February 11, 2009 - 19:27 ET by slickwillie2001When Obammy does this, they won't go anywhere near the word 'Fairness Doctrine'; that's way too flammable. Look at what they are doing to healthcare in the odious 'stimulus' bill, moving stealthily.
Obammy will attack talk radio through the FCC and some kind of 'community content' requirement. Radio stations will have to include a certain percentage of local content, -who could disagree with that? Shouldn't radio stations serve the communities that allow them to use their airwaves? This means a national talk-radio program won't be eligible for the local content requirements. No need for involvement from Congress.
Why? Because Congress can't stop it. Republicans might manage a filibuster of a bill, but they can't originate a bill which would be the only way to stop it. The community route also ensures that no one will be successful in a countermove to extend it to the broadcast networks and al New York Times etc. The only way to stop it might be massive liberal media attention, but don't count on that. If talk radio crashes, who will benefit financially?
Who would run the community content organizations? What available organization is Obammy in bed with that has a presence across the nation in our communities, and thinks exactly like he does?
Ooh ooh! Pick me ,pick me...

Obama Concentrating Power
I agree; he won't worry about legislation. He will do an end run around Congress and attempt to implement his agenda through regulation by unelected appointees. That's how Clinton got a lot of Kyoto standards in place when he knew the Senate would never ratify the treaty.

I don't think there's a chance in hell
February 11, 2009 - 19:27 ET by nwahsI don't think there's much chance that the "fairness doctrine" will ever come back. I blog a lot on all types of boards, and one thing holds true. In general, people have an aversion to censorship. I don't think Dimocrats are crazy enough to actively push for that. Its one thing for reporters to fan the flames during their tabloid soiree. Its quite another for elected officials to suggest instituting censorship.
Are you claiming...
February 11, 2009 - 22:09 ET by Karma...that elected officials are NOT suggesting the reinstitution?
No representation, without taxation!
Other than Schumer?
February 11, 2009 - 22:18 ET by nwahsYou have a few idiots in liberal pockets ( e.g., Schumer) but I doubt you find a gaggle. As another post in this topic mentions, the blue dogs will have no part of it. If they did, they would be removed from office.
Let be blunt.
February 11, 2009 - 19:28 ET by superconThis is nothing more than attempt by Democrats in Congress to silence a handful of people who hold their feet to the fire.
We all know who they are targeting. It's Rush,Sean Hannity,Laura Ingraham,Bill O'Reilly,Michael Savage and a few others. The law would apply only to them.
Lefties and socialist pinko liberals cannot stand it when someone dares to question them and if they could they would put Rush in jail. They are out of control.
No one will step on your rights quicker and harder than a liberal.

February 11, 2009 - 19:41 ET by seesalrunSenator Sessions, you have my number and my address. Your letter is in the mail once again to praise you for your courage. May I suggest, we - Alabamians, put our RAINY DAY FUND to use and build a fence to keep out the liberals.
That's right folks (pardon the pun) Alabama the lowly uneducated RED STATE is not broke nor ready to surrender. Cheers to you Senator. Count me in next Election.
Please Wake Up America for God's Sake.
Oh and in case you missed it
February 11, 2009 - 19:46 ET by seesalrunI don't have a link, but heard GOVERNOR RILEY from - ALABAMA (!!) blast the Porktalor this morning. Called it for what it is. PAYBACK! Born in Jersey - but proud to be ...uh....a redneck?
Worse things I reckon.

February 11, 2009 - 19:53 ET by bre1227Oh how I envy you Alabamians. I'm from Illinois where we are not only the bluest of the blue, but getting more broke by the day or at least getting more spotlight then usual for our long history of corruption. Can we borrow Senator Sessions for an election or two?
Sorry
February 11, 2009 - 20:56 ET by seesalrunWe hope to keep our Senator. I hope to help Sessions all I can. Voted for him and call him nearly daily now. Do check out Riley's little speech today as well. Our sole Democrap Senator has his eyes on the Governorship - good luck to him, not. You're more than welcome to come on down as long as you are rightly inclined. Weather is fabulous and the people ultra friendly. No stampedes at WalMart if you know what I mean. The South is not what you think or should I say as you are told. I work for OH NO! a manufacturing plant. And we are busy, thank you God.

February 12, 2009 - 00:38 ET by thebutlerdiditI was raised in Bama, my whole family is there, one of those big ones, and went to the University of Bear Bryant. I live in Ga now, but I am getting tired of the increasingly blue tinge that has crept in. I am moving back as soon as things pick up in the economy and I can unload this monstrous elephant of a house! If I could afford tho walk away from it, I would be there tomorrow. I hate the slams about the South. I think it makes me angrier than anything. What part of Bama are you from? I was raised in Gadsden. I am moving back to build a house next to my mama and daddy on 9 acres on the Coosa. Can't wait!

I like fences.
February 11, 2009 - 20:29 ET by superconI know a good place for one.
Because with a name like Obama... you know it has to be good.
And where would you put it?
February 11, 2009 - 21:03 ET by seesalrunThe fence I mean? Looks to me like those States (like mine, I hope) not inclined to take Obama's payola may be a&& out - (has The President even acknowledged Oklahoma today - I know he blue off Kentucky -another pun intended-) may find themselves .... well you do the math. Fences sound good to me. But as neighborly as we are (you'll seldom find fences seperating neighbors here) perhaps we'll include our neighbors to the North (KY, TN, WV, MO) maybe a Carolina or two and our wonderful neighbors to the West (TX, LA and MS). Georgia, without Atlanta is just an extension of my beautiful State. Peace.
One on the border to start..
February 11, 2009 - 21:20 ET by superconMaybe another around Washington D.C. so no one could escape.

February 12, 2009 - 00:41 ET by thebutlerdiditarea, and then fence them? How about Maine? I say just give it to the Canadians. Maybe Washington, too, if they give us a good deal. And we can give NM back to Mexico. See, I fixed it!

I'll believe the repubs will fillibuster when I see it happen
February 11, 2009 - 22:31 ET by R D HelmThere are too many republicans who are not exactly fans of talk radio, either.
Whether or not they will stick their necks out to save it will be interesting to see.
In the end, it may be a moot point, as the FCC does not need congressional approval to reinstate the "Fairness" Doctrine, anyway.

does anyone believe, like i do ...
February 11, 2009 - 22:28 ET by pmohbuckthat the "fairness doctrine" will be headed to the supreme court as an attempt to deny individuals their first amendment rights? i don't see any attempt by congress to force this ridiculous philosophy on the public as being definitive ... i see it being a huge issue.
and as a counter measure, the GOP should consider presenting the following as an effort to ensure "fairness":
- NBC, CBS, ABC, CNN and MSNBC must allow a FOXNEWS representative on every program they run ... and specifically, keith olbermann must allow bill o'reilly time on his show (wouldn't you love to see that!)
- male reporters should be given access to female locker rooms
- NOW must have men serving in a leadership capacity
- equal number of black and white athletes on EVERY professional sports team
- women are to be drafted and will spearhead obama's invasion of pakistan

Election's have
February 11, 2009 - 23:24 ET by jdhawkElection's have consequences, folks. Like the many posters to this article, I agree, we are screwed. All of you know that Specter, Snowe and Collins will vote with the dimocrats for the next two years at least. By that time, most of the damage will be done.
Next election, we all need to become "community organizers" for conservatives.
Vote Them Out of Office
February 12, 2009 - 01:08 ET by Lakewood BobSpecter can be voted out in 2010, Snowe in 2012, and Collins in 2014. As Thomas Jefferson said, "Enlighten the people generally, and tyranny and oppression of body and mind will vanish like evil spirits at the dawn of day." Remind all your friends in Penn. and Maine to vote these traitors out of office.
damage
February 12, 2009 - 03:00 ET by LoosMooseThey can still do plenty of damage in the meantime. I have no objection to them voting their conscience, but they should do it from the democratic party. Obama better send some bailout money to Al Franken. They can't declare him the winner until the check clears the bank.
I had a nightmare that Keith Olberman was run over by a bus,....... and lived.
Standing on principle
February 12, 2009 - 07:06 ET by LCT688I am a free and sovereign citizen of a free and sovereign state. I relinquish certain of those rights to my state in exchange for that state’s guarantee to protect those and all of my God given rights, as enumerated in my state’s Constitution. Acting as an agent of its citizens, my state freely entered into a compact with other free and sovereign states to create a Federal government whose sole purpose is to act within a strictly limited authority granted to it by those member states; Said authority being too; 1. Act as the common agent of those member states and their citizens in relations with foreign powers, and to protect them from the infringement of their sovereign rights and the rights of their citizens by any foreign power. 2. To create and defend a common currency to be used within the several states and to set and control its value and its value in relation to foreign currency and, 3. To guarantee the free and unrestricted trade between the several states.
Further it is the responsibility of my state to protect my rights and its rights from usurpation by the Federal government should it seek to enact laws or exercise authority beyond those responsibilities granted to it by the several free and sovereign states.
I would sooner die fighting, with my personal liberty and moral integrity intact, going before my maker with a clear conscience on those accounts, than to surrender them to the usurpation of the Federal government. My personal liberty and moral integrity are not for sale at any price.
