Gingrich Criticizes Media for Anti-Religion Elitism; Chastises ABC's Gibson

When Sarah Palin said U.S. soldiers were on a ‘task from God,' former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich, a historian, knew exactly what she was saying. She was quoting President Abraham Lincoln.

The day after a September 11 interview with Palin, the Republican nominee for vice president, aired on ABC's "World News with Charles Gibson," Gingrich blasted the media for its historical ignorance at the Family Research Council's Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. He then pointed out Gibson's interview as a specific example.

"I want to take my limited time today and focus in on - I couldn't imagine a better moment for you to be here than after last night's stunningly distorted interview with Gov. Palin on ABC," Gingrich said. "Stunningly distorted because of one particular set of question, which I want to spend my time explaining and putting in context. I don't know how many of you have seen the original interview or excerpts, but there's a point where Charlie Gibson asks Gov. Palin about whether or not she believed that our soldiers were on a task from God and he quoted one-fourth of something she had said in her church."

Gingrich explained the portion of a quote Gibson used in his questioning of Palin had a broader meaning when the entire quote was included, as my NewsBusters colleague John Stephenson pointed out on September 11.

"He quoted - quote, ‘Our national leaders are sending U.S. soldiers on a task that is from God.' Now the rest of the quote - this is the full quote from the June 8, 2008 Assembly of God at the Pentecostal Church - quote, ‘Pray for our military men and women who are striving to do what is right - also for this country - that our leaders, our national leaders are sending U.S. troops, U.S. soldiers out on a task that is from God," Gingrich said. "That's what we have to make sure we're praying for - that there is a plan and that that plan is God's plan.'"

But it's just a symptom of a larger problem and Gibson's interview was just one example, the former University of West Georgia professor said.

"Gov. Palin tried to explain to Mr. Gibson last night she was paraphrasing Abraham Lincoln," Gingrich said. "But you could tell on the look from Gibson's face that the idea was just beyond him.

The broader problem, according to Gingrich is the religion phobia that is exhibited throughout the mainstream media.

"And I want to take a minute or two because I want to put in context how bad things have gotten in the elite media and how utterly alien from historic traditional American culture some elements of the elite media are and I'll let you decide for yourself as you watch them which people accurately fit this," Gingrich added. "But there's a secular, at a minimum skeptical to religion, at a maximum overtly hostile to religion bias in the mainstream media."

He should be President

I'm supporting McCain/Palin, but I wish Gingrich was running.  I can't imagine a better President.

 needs more cowbell

Gingrich

I don't know about Newt being President, but he should be out speaking on the campaign trail as much as possible.  Same with Guiliani, same with Thompson.  If the Republican's want to win this election, they need these folks out there hammering these points as much as possible.

let Gibson hear it

contact Gibson here and let him know what you think of his bias please

I really admire Newt

I really admire Newt Gingrich. Now who was the idiot that cut that video clip off in the middle?

They're selling DVDs..

Of the entire event - http://www.frcaction.org/

We were lucky to have them let us tape any of it at all. I had to use what video I got sparringly.

Newt is fantastic.

Gingrich on Daily Show

Newt was trying to make some similar points last night on the Daily Show but couldn't get a word in edgewise.

I was hoping someone would do a blog on that but I guess The Daily Show is not Biased so much as an arm of the DNC.

I just don't get it, he was laughing that Republicans were saying that Experience for the President was important for Obama but "now" experience "isn't important" for the VP.

Anytime Newt tried to make a point Stewart cut him off or made a snide joke.   People think O'Reilly is a gas-bag, jerk who doesn't let opposing view points have their say, but last night was another classic example of why I don't watch the Daily Show and regret it when I do stumble upon a brief episode.

"I just don't get it, he

Don't worry, libs rarely make any sense. Stewart is just another example of that.

I think the media is scared

I think the media is scared of Gov. Palin and everything she stands for.

Why are they scared?

Why is the media so scared of people of faith?  And why, if being a religious person is so bad, do the liberal candidates spend so much time being videotaped going to church and speaking in churches when they are campaigning?  It's such a contradiction.

Of course, it probably goes back to the old "Nobody I know (in my rarefied bubble world) is openly a Christian, therefore all Christians must be scary religious freaks. Besides, they don't believe in killing babies as a method of birth control, so OBVIOUSLY they are sooo out of the mainstream."

Why are they scared?

Liberals are really scared of the following:

Happy Christian/Conservatives who hate abortion and walk the walk, like the Palins.

Christians/Conservatives who have happy, healthy sex lives.  (Key argument against those who say immorality wrong is that we "can't get any" and are "Frustrated".)

Also, Liberals go to church and do good deeds because it's a feel good thing to do.  They don't really believe in a fully man, fully God Jesus who saved them from their sins.  Because liberals don't believe in sin, at least the way the Bible defines it.

People like Obama and Clinton, liberals know, use their faith as a tool to get votes and fool the stupid Christians who wouldn't vote for them if they just admitted they were unbelievers.  Check Bill Maher out on Larry King sometime, he admits it.

Doing God's Work

I found it very interesting to see the distinction between praying that our troops are doing God's work, and asserting that our troops are doing God's work. Looks like liberals fell for the shorter, if technically incorrect understanding of Palin's statement. Seems to me that it was a relatively innocent misunderstanding, given their paranoia that religion might get directly used as justification for war.

Since the latter problem is very serious, witness the Islamic radicals use of the process, I figure they can be forgiven for the sensitivity. There can also be a problem of dancing close to asserting that God is on our side, and that can be politically expedient. It energizes those who think it is really the case, and the escapes the direct criticism. One can hardly help admiring such heights of the political art form.

Finally, I have no doubt that Palin's text is written by speechwriters, who do a good job on fitting it to some optimum between representing the person who is to give it, along with the political advantage that is desired. Doubt if Palin herself actually remembered that quote before discussing it with the writers. However, she is an impressively quick learner. Really shows up in her interviews. Palin for President! Forget McCain.... :-)

They're scared because...

...we love God, and they use God.  To these fools, God is a concept used for political expediency, nothing else.

Why else would they see a potential calamity (Hurricane Gustav) as God "being on their side"?

I could go on and on - the 10 pound Bible being schlepped to church, the screaming revruns, the candidate-in-the-pulpit for us but not for you, etc...

*ick*

God is on my side....

I seem to see politicians on both sides of the fence invoking God, when I am damn sure it is cynical use. I really don't see either side has a monopoly on being hypocritical about religion. The conservatives use it a bit more, because more or their constituancy are believers already, and the liberals a bit less because they have a larger consitiuancy of non-believers already.

However, I am sure that non-believers on both sides cringe, when they see their leaders, whose policies they otherwise believe in, mixing religion and politics. I guess believers from either side also cringe when secularists try too hard to squeeze religion entirely out of daily affairs.

Come on, it's one of those beautiful, impossible conundrums of our diversity. We're going to muddle on through anyway!
