Chris Matthews, on Wednesday's "Hardball," backpedaled from the James Bond movie-like death sequence he depicted for Rush Limbaugh that he made on the MSNBC airwaves on Tuesday morning. As Newsbusters' Mark Finkelstein first noted, Matthews imagined a cinematic death for the radio talk show host:
"Rush Limbaugh is looking more and more like Mr. Big, and at some point somebody's going to jam a CO2 pellet into his head and he's going to explode like a giant blimp. That day may come. Not yet. But we'll be there to watch. I think he's Mr. Big, I think Yaphet Kotto. Are you watching, Rush?"
Fast forward to Wednesday night and Matthews offered the following clarification during the "Sideshow" segment on the October 14 "Hardball" [MP3 audio available here]:
MATTHEWS: And speaking of the right. Got some concerned e-mail today – I never know what I'm gonna get – about my comparison yesterday of Rush Limbaugh to Mr. Big. Remember him? Played by Yaphet Kotto in the great James Bond movie. Anyway I said I was thinking of Mr. Big or actually Rush Limbaugh got thinking of him, whom James Bond said – you'll know the quote here and why I thought of it – "He always did have an inflated opinion of himself." Well it was a movie reference with which I am very proud to relentlessly give you. But in this political atmosphere I shouldn't have gone into such detail about Mr. Big's demise at the end of that movie, about that CO2 capsule, especially in reference to Rush. And certainly I shouldn't have speculated, even metaphorically or cinematically, about that happening to Rushbo in the real world. By the way we got word from ESPN late last night that Rush Limbaugh will be dropped from that group bidding to buy the St. Louis Rams.

Everything Rush said was true, up to that point mcnabb had never had a completion percentage over 58.4% and never had a QB rating over 86. He definitely did not deserve all the hype that the media gave him.
Gee, that 86 QB rating of
October 15, 2009 - 01:49 ET by JerGee, that 86 QB rating of McNabb the season before Limbaugh's boneheaded remarks was still superior to that of the pathetic flop Bret Favre. And I suppose McNabb's three straight Pro Bowl appearances--including a runner-up in MVP balloting--had been just an exercise in social engineering by the League and the media.
I know McNabb had been ranked as high as the #2 quarterback for the upcoming NFL draft when he came out of college. Was that ranking just misguided social concern? What about the #1 quarterback, David Carr, and his "spectacular" career. Should Philly have picked him instead of McNabb? Oh yeah...those other 8 or 9 black quarterbacks who had started at least one game for their respective pro teams at the time Limbaugh spouted off about McNabb not being any good from the get-go. Were they all affirmative action players too?
Face it, Limbaugh was way out of line.

Jer: Your logic is faulty.
October 15, 2009 - 12:25 ET by east tennessee johnJer: Your logic is faulty. Anyone who followed the Eagles AT THAT TIME would hvae told you the team's success was predicated on their defense. Based on your reasoing Super Bowl winning quaterback Trent Dilfershould have gotten more press, right? Hadn't Farve led a Super Bowl winner prior to your reference period and won 3 MVPs? McNabb, despite his skills nada for either. Also, Rush's comments were directed to the fawning white guilt media, not McNabb, who overestimated McNabb viv a vis the rest of the team. You certainly know the fawning white guilt media , don't you. If not see coverage of Obama 2004-present.
east tennessee john...
October 15, 2009 - 13:26 ET by JerFirst, full disclosure: I've been following the NFL for approximately fifty years. My least favorite team of all time is the Philadelphia Eagles. As such, I have no particular allegiance to, or affection for, Donovan McNabb--other than he seems to be a pretty nice guy.
As I noted the other day, I don't believe McNabb is a great quarterback, or even close to it. But I do believe he has demonstrated sufficient skills for the position that render Limbaugh's assessment--which amounted to a claim that McNabb is/was nothing more than an untalented affirmative action quarterback--to be stunningly inappropriate. You're half-right. Rush's comments were directed to the fawning white guilt media. However, there is precious little evidence the white guilt media was at all culpable in the McNabb case. And you are wrong to suggest Rush's remarks weren't also directed at McNabb. They most definitely were.
Jer
Really
October 15, 2009 - 16:31 ET by Jerry MackI have heard Rushs' McNabb comments many times and do not interpret them as saying McNabb was an untalented affirmative action quarterback. It is quite clear that you have been well trained to see race in any negative comment from a white person about a person of color. Or is it just Rush that you have this opinion?
Quite clear, Jerry Mack?
October 15, 2009 - 17:16 ET by JerQuite clear, Jerry Mack? If anything I have been trained to see just the opposite and have defended many whom I have felt were unjustly accused of making racist comments. Moreover, I've lamented the playing of the race card by Democrats on several occasions here at NB--[in a post yesterday for the most recent of many examples].
Rush, however, said McNabb wasn't any good from the get-go and suggested he was continuing to start and being praised merely as a result of social concern by the league and the media. Do I interpret that as shorthand for an "untalented affirmative action quarterback? You bet.
Apparently you have been trained to defend Limbaugh come hell or high water. Demonstrate a little independent thinking Jerry Mack. It would serve you well.

Not an election, and he hasn't folded yet
October 14, 2009 - 18:34 ET by CO2MakerThe story is that St. Louis Blues chairman Dave Checketts said that Rush's participation in the group "had become a complication ... and the bid will move forward without him" (statement as paraphrased by ESPN). Rush said on radio today, "I'm not even thinking of exiting. I'm not even thinking of caving." So, this hasn't ended yet. But as already mentioned, if he is removed, he will they will have handed him the basis for damages in his lawsuits against his alleged slanderers.
And also on his show today, he was not taking prisoners. He lambasted Sharpton for the Tawana Brawley affair and Jackson for his "Hymietown" remark and for saying last year that he wanted to "cut that n-----'s balls off" (referring to Obama). Rush also repeated Ralph David Abernathy's claim that Jackson wasn't beside MLK when he was shot and that he came out later and smeared himself with blood and said King died in his arms.
And then, for good measure, Rush revisited CNN's Rick Sanchez's DUI and leaving the scene in 1990 that resulted in the death of a pedestrian and Sanchez's plea of no contest to DUI (but he did not admit responsibility for the victim's injuries and subsequent death).
When he goes down, he won't! But even when he's not going down, he can take a few media trolls and "community advocates" with him. That's the nice thing about this situation.
