Barbara Walters: Hypocrite-in-Chief

“People are looking for something to criticize.” Yes, Barbara they are. And you were once among them.

Barbara Walters took exception to complaints from some that the Obamas made a royal mess of British protocol when meeting the queen of England. However, just over a year ago, Walters herself sniffed at the Bush White House for sending her a Christmas card containing [gasp!] “Scripture.”

On the April 2 episode of “The View,” the co-hosts discussed the murmurings that the president and first lady broke protocol when meeting the queen of England. Walters got visibly upset, waving her hands and speaking in a high, mocking tone saying, “And then people criticize because you know people are looking for something to criticize,” she said. “It makes me unhappy we are always looking for something to criticize, ‘Why did she put her arm around the queen?’.”

But on the December 14, 2007 broadcast of “The View,” she made it perfectly clear to her co-hosts and the audience that she was quite upset about a White House Christmas card she received. “Don’t you think it’s a little interesting that the president of all the people is sending out a religious Christmas card?”

In acknowledging the religious nature of Christmas, the Bushes offended exquisitely sophisticated liberal social propriety. How embarrassing!

“First of all, let me show you the cover of the White House, which is nice and bland…So that’s pleasant enough.  This is what interested me, that it is a religious Christmas card.  Usually in the past when I have received a Christmas card, it’s been ‘happy holiday’s’ and so on- And this says:

“‘You alone are the Lord.  You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them.  You gave life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.’

“That’s from Nehemiah in the Old Testament.  I don’t remember— and I’m sure people will remind me—getting a religious card.  Now does this also go to agnostics and atheists and Muslims and –”

When the Obama White House commits a royal snafu, no one can criticize, but when the Bush White House sends out a religious Christmas card, Walters is allowed to get in a tizzy.
