Media Claiming '1 Million' Illegal Abortions in Brazil, But Number Is From Abortion Proponents

  • Bookmark and Share

Media outlets including CNN, Time magazine, and the Los Angeles Times are reporting that "over 1 million" women in Brazil illegally terminate their pregnancies every year. (Abortion is illegal there, except under rare circumstances.) However, this figure appears to originate from a group called Ipas, an organization dedicated to "advancing women's reproductive rights." It openly endorses legalized abortion.

And besides the dubious nature of the source, history tells us that this "1 million" number should be looked upon very suspiciously.

Before abortion was made legal in Mexico City a couple of years ago, abortion proponents trumpeted the claim that there were already "up to 1 million women" who procured illegal abortions in Mexico every year. Several mainstream media outlets, including the Los Angeles Times, proudly parroted that number. However, after abortion was made legal in Mexico City, it could be demonstrated that the "1 million" figure had been grossly exaggerated and was flat-out false. In fact, a reporter for the Times who had echoed the bogus statistic later had to admit that the "1-million figure appears too high."

There is also the infamous episode from here in the United States. In the years before Roe v. Wade, abortion proponents constantly trumpeted that there were "1 million" illegal abortions in the U.S. These proponents knew this was a bald-faced lie. (Ex-abortionist Dr. Bernard Nathanson: "We aroused enough sympathy to sell our program of permissive abortion by fabricating the number of illegal abortions done annually in the U.S. The actual figure was approaching 100,000 but the figure we gave to the media repeatedly was 1,000,000. Repeating the big lie often enough convinces the public.") You know the rest of the story: 50 million dead since 1973.

Is the "1 million" number coming from Brazil bogus? If history is any indication, the answer is yes.

Let's pray that Brazil does not fall to the "big lie." A 2007 poll showed nearly two-thirds of Brazilians want no change in the country's abortion laws.

By the way ...

In the interest of brevity, I omitted a 2007 study of Brazil that also voiced the "1 million" figure.

But who was the author of this study? The international arm of Planned Parenthood (!), who would stand to gain a lot from legalized abortion.

See how it works?

Excusing lies

They were convinced they were right in principle, so what's a little lie among friends?

Just another

"fake, but accurate" story.

Much like the "one million" women who die every year from anorexia.. and the "Super Bowl Sunday beatings" of women.

But what the hey.....

That 100,000 figure was also a lie, it was much less than even that, but the dirty polo caca sobs got roe v wade passed and the 50,000,000 figure is the result. "Hell hath no fury compared to God when He is Scorned"

Ive heard it said that,

Ive heard it said that, "You cannot legislate morality".

Yet, the last time I checked, murder was against the law.  Murder would be considered an immoral act.  Murder is an action that doesn't really help society, or hold up any of civilized society's morals.  I think we can all agree that murder is a bad thing.  We cannot legislate morality; all we can do is impose penalties for immorality, in this example.

However, the act of abortion has all the characteristics of murder, yet is legal in the US.  You start with a living human, and you end up with a mass of tissue that is tossed into a garbage can.  Like I said, murder.

I realize I'm not the first person to ever think of that.  But still...I find it utterly amazing we even have to have a conversation about abortion in our modern society.  To me it's a no-brainer.

Of your ignorance.

We cannot legislate

We cannot legislate morality; all we can do is impose penalties for immorality, in this example.

Actually what we do is impose penalties not for immorality, but for illegality.

However, that in itself is a problem, because when morality is removed from the mix, what we are left with is not the difference between right and wrong, but between legal and illegal.

For instance, abortion may be immoral, but it is legal here in the US.

Ditto euthanasia...once it is made legal, the moral argument will cease to matter to its proponents.

58% of all statistics are made up on the fly.

Believe none of what you read and only half of what you see. Statistics lie like dogs. The only ones you can trust are the ones you gather yourself...and even those are suspect.

I Lived In Brazil

I lived in Brazil back in the 90's.  Abortion was not a major issue among the girls down there. Most wouldn't be able to afford an abortion anyway.  I suspect the 1 million number to be false.  However, the pro-life side needs to get its act together and combat these statistics with some numbers of their own.

It appears Ipas also

It appears Ipas also interfered with the family of a 9-year-old Brazilian girl pregnant after being raped by her stepfather. They told the parents -- falsely -- that the girl would die without an abortion in order to overcome their strong religious objections, and then started using the case as a wedge to "liberalize" the laws to "help" other "women".
