NY Times Says GOP Senator Bunning 'Bit of a Screwball,' May Be Mentally Unfit

  • Bookmark and Share

New York Times reporter Mark Leibovich specializes in spunky profiles of politicians -- hostile profiles of conservatives, flattering ones of liberals.

His latest, on controversial Republican Sen. Jim Bunning, "Republicans Looking for a Reliever in Kentucky," fell safely into the former category, crammed with personal attacks ("questions about his mental fitness") and colorful insults (Bunning's "a bit of a screwball"). The headline is a reference to Bunning's former fame as a baseball pitcher.

Leibovich's latest is similar in tone to his profile of another conservative Republican, former Rep. James Sensenbrenner ("commonly described as 'prickly,' 'cantankerous' and 'unpleasant'"). By contrast, Leibovich has been quite kind to liberals like Al Gore (a "compelling" "pop-culture icon") and Sen. Chris Dodd (a "happy warrior" in a "joyous orbit").

Here's what Leibovich says about Bunning, who's in a fight with his own party and faces a tough re-election in 2010:

Key Republicans are gently (or not gently enough) trying to dissuade Mr. Bunning from seeking re-election in 2010 out of concern that his paltry fund-raising, declining approval ratings and irascible conduct have made him something between vulnerable and unelectable.

But in recent weeks, Mr. Bunning has shown no sign of stepping aside and delivered a string of incendiary pronouncements that have fed an impression that he is, to go with a baseball metaphor, a bit of a screwball.

He declared in a speech last month that the cancer-stricken Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg would probably be dead in nine months. (He then apologized in a statement that twice misspelled her name.) He threatened to sue the National Republican Senatorial Committee if it backed a primary challenger. And he hinted at a Capitol Hill fund-raiser last week that he was so mad at some in his party that he might just quit and let Kentucky's Democratic governor pick his successor.

Why go after Bunning so harshly? It's not like the House and Senate are free of cantankerous Democrats who make inflammatory comments. Rep. Pete Stark and senior Democrat and former Klansman Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia would seem to be prime, pompous targets for a Leibovich cutdown. But he hasn't profiled them.

This next paragraph provided a possible clue: Bunning, you see, is a conservative.

Elected to the Senate in 1998 after six terms in the House, Mr. Bunning, 77, is one of the Senate's most fiscally conservative members. His focus on economic issues -- he sits on the Senate Banking, Budget and Finance Committees -- would seemingly make him a high-profile voice on some of pressing issues of the day. But much of the attention he draws is over his demeanor, not his positions.

Mr. Bunning is known on Capitol Hill for gruffly blowing past reporters and colleagues in hallways and for cranky outbursts at his staff. "He is perceived as being out-of-touch, hot-headed and generally counterproductive," said Phil Musser, a Republican consultant and former official in the Bush administration.

As a native Kentuckian and sports legend in a solidly Republican state, Mr. Bunning long enjoyed a solid base of support. But his penchant for self-immolation nearly cost him re-election in 2004 -- and set off a swirl of questions about his mental fitness....In 2006, Time magazine named him one of the five worst senators in the country.

Well, if an objective source like Time magazine says it, it must be accurate.

Senator Bunning is one of

Senator Bunning is one of the BEST there is in the senate for us conservatives, he doesn't mince words and doesn't take BS...none of it...

That is why they don't like him....pure FEAR!

Fight like hell Bunning...we need you and more like YOU!

I'm furious after reading this...can you tell?

oh, you want a geezer war?

Yup, God bless Sen. Bunning.

I'll be waiting for the reciprocal story on that sharp-as-a-tack Sen. Burris. Or maybe my Garden State Senator, 8,500 year old Frank "Imhotep" Lousenberger.

They're trying to neuter

They're trying to neuter him early.  With the start this President and Congress have gotten off to, Bunning will probably get reelected easily.  The NY Slimes is trying to make him out to be unstable because they think he'll win this time.  They want to cut him off at the knees before he has a chance to embarrass them by running and winning.  Nothing like trotting out his close race in 2004, the Ginsburg flap and the alleged discord with Cornyn and McConnell to create the early impression that he's a dead man walking.  He's going to win in 2010, and if Cornyn and McConnell get in his way, I would wholeheartedly support a primary challenge to both turncoats.

Here's the problem

Here's the real problem al New York Times and Time have with Jim Bunning:

American Conservative Union conservative rating 2007: 92; Lifetime 94.78

Not quite the most reliable conservative, but close to the best.

NYT doesn't like him 'cause

NYT doesn't like him 'cause he pitched a perfecto against the Mets in '64.

No Hitters in Both Leagues

Jim Bunning also threw a no-hitter against the Red Sox when he pitched for the Tigers. He ended the game by striking out Ted Williams.

That is some awesome trivia BW! Very cool!

Sorry Al, I've used up my allotment of "give a crap!"

Here's my response to the NY Times.

Nuff said.

I don't know much about Jim Bunning...

other than he is a Hall of Famer and a Republican Senator, but following my rule of thumb, if the New York Slimes doesn't like him, he is A-OK in my book.  Jim Webster

→ Me neither

I just remember Bunning pitched a perfect game for the Phillies back when I was a kid.

I thought the insanity

I thought the insanity thing for politicians was only for Dems that got caught red-handed doing something wrong, and then went on to create even more problems and embarrassments for the Donk-, I mean, jackasses?

One of the 24% who thinks George W. Bush was a great President. One of the 89% who wants to bring back the stock and pillory.

Let us be fair here

Let us be fair here. Senator Bunning does suffer a little from hoof in mouth disease as do I from time to time. So What. Really so what. At least he does his job which is saying a lot. I say that we make no excuses for people when they screw up, we all do from time to time. It is when the screw ups become patholgical that we need to be concerned and as far as I have been able to tell from my lowly perch here in South East Louisiana he does not have that paticular problem.

I find it interesting that

I find it interesting that somehow Pelosi and Reid aren't mentaly unfit. Bunning is one of my Senators and he gets start to the point, BUT the KY GOP wants to get David Williams in there so they are trying to force him out. Williams is a loose canon.

From a party that contains

From a party that contains in order...B. Frank, E. Kennedy, H. Reid etc, etc to call someone else mentally unfit is beyond laughable!

Yeah, I reckon the NYT is unfit.  Unfit for normal people to read and enjoy.  But, no worries, they'll be gone before too long.

I live in Kentucky and the

I live in Kentucky and the truth is, he is a bit of a screwball.  The problem right now is that he has done zero fund raising, has no money in his campaign fund and some of his remarks are going to make great commercials for the Dems.  We really dont need to give the Dems any more of an edge in congress.  His rating will not matter if he is re-elected.

That said said, if he is a screwball what the hell is Frank and the rest of the loony birds on the other side of the aisle?

After almost two years of

After almost two years of this infant President and his thug administration, do you actually believe Kentucky residents would defeat Jim Bunning because he made some silly remark about Ruth Bader Ginsburg?

Leibovich is cranky cause I nailed his wife...

And so did half the Denver Broncos.  I guess you lash out at anyone under those circumstances.

Byrd brain

Bunning may be a screwball, but the Dems named the 91-year-old Byrd, who can hardly get through a brief speech on the Senate floor, and made him Senate President pro-tem.  That means that he's 4th in line to the Presidency.  His health makes him unfit for office.  If he's still alive in 2012 and has the nerve to run again, let's hope West Virginia does the responsible thing and defeats this old coot.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

People in Kentucky really

People in Kentucky really do have concerns about Sen. Bunning's mental fitness. I was there during the 2004 election. It was awful. Bunning went from being a for sure win in a red state to just barely scrapping by, all because of his own self-destruction.

The line: "Mr. Bunning long enjoyed a solid base of support. But his penchant for self-immolation nearly cost him re-election in 2004 -- and set off a swirl of questions about his mental fitness" is objective fact.

The way Obama, Reid and

The way Obama, Reid and Pelosi are mismanaging the affairs of this country, Bunning could descend into full Norm Crosby mode and he'd still beat whatever riff-raff the Democrats nominate to run against him.

Bunning's 2010 reelection

Bunning's 2010 reelection looks like a pretty solid toss-up by all standards.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Senate_elections,_2010#Predictions

In general, this early on, almost all the toss ups are Republican seats.

As soon as this phony "Hope

As soon as this phony "Hope & Change" afterglow wears off, a lot of these "toss-ups" are going to skew Republican.  Meanwhile, Harry Reid, one of the architects of this ongoing "stimulus" failure is going to be extremely vulnerable.  There's probably no hope in beating Schmuckie Schumer (unless Rudy wants to take a crack) or Barbara Boxer.  But it's obvious now that President Parasite is in way over his head...Democrat blood is in the water.

"Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." -Winston Churchill

fitz...

Dem blood is in the water indeed...and more to come.

About Reid, I have been hoping for change with him in a big way, his connections in Nevada with the machine and his cheating over the years are what scare me, but Vegas and the economy in the shape it is may just tip the scales, of course the dems have tons of workers from ACORN that invaded Nevada, a lot of them coming up from Ca. to-boot...

We shall see, but nothing will make me happier than to see this slimy slug go down.
