Back to the 80s Trend? Bad Reaganite Rerun, Says NYT Reporter

The '80s are back -- Sylvester Stallone has prepped another "Rambo" movie, Chuck Norris is an Internet icon and Mr. T is doing commercials. Alex Williams tackled the "trend" for the Sunday Styles section of the New York Times, "Tough Guys for Tough Times." Williams' story is a retread in its own way; the first sentence below in particular could have been been found 20 years ago in any college rag, pretentiously penned by an earnest liberal student straining for profundity:

"The leading action symbols of the Reagan era -- with all their excess, jingoism and good vs. evil bombast -- have returned, as outsize and obvious as they were in the decade of stonewash. Yet as stars of prime-time hits and feature films (not to mention Republican mascots), these actors are still as ripped and imposing as they were 20 years ago, and they continue to carry an undeniable authority with fans old and new."

Williams cracked on insecure conservative men, albeit in code ("likely not Hillary Clinton supporters"):

"But ["American Gladiator" producer Mark] Koops, speaking on Tuesday, New Hampshire primary day, said the appetite for these action figures represents more than a joke. Rather, it speaks to a sincere desire among some men -- likely not Hillary Clinton supporters -- to return to what he called 'a comfort zone' symbolized by heroic characters of yore.

....

"This is a moment in American history bedeviled by a sinking economy, the possibility of environmental catastrophe and violent conflicts in the Middle East and beyond. So it's not surprising to see men who were raised on cartoonish images of the fictional John Rambo taking out more Soviet soldiers in two hours than the Afghan mujahedeen did in a decade show an appetite for characters who tend to fix even big problems with room-clearing brawls, monosyllabic wisecracks and large-caliber firearms."

bedeviled by a sinking economy

"bedeviled by a sinking economy"

The sinking economy started in the late 70's by the Carter administration. It took 15 years for the U.S. to pull out of that one.

Maybe we're just gettin

Maybe we're just gettin sick of the protagonists Hollywood has been throwing at us lately.  The "heroes" of films and entertainment are usually of murky, self-loathing characters at best, or sometimes they are just depraved freaks.

I'd love to see a movie with Mr. T and Chuck Norris pounding a seditious pack of America-hatin' moonbats.  Those freaks barricading the port up in Washington would make good villains.

Or maybe Ted Nugent cutting down trees full of smelly hippie vandals.

How about a movie with the

How about a movie with the Nuge cutting down trees full of smelly hippie vandals, and then Mr. T and Chuck Norris use the larger branches to pound seditious pack of America-hatin' moonbats.

Sorry, it's one AM here...

Quo usque tandem abutere, Catilina, patientia nostra? Quam diu etiam furor iste tuus nos eludet?

Maybe another Rambo movie

Maybe another Rambo movie where he gets air-dropped onto the roof of the NYT and then takes care of business. Bet he'd find more commies there than any jungle in SE Asia.

Oh, he's just jealous

Oh, he's just jealous because no one wants to watch super hero reporters flying through the air with their pads and pens, defeating corporate and conservative villains.

Well look at the roster of

Well look at the roster of democrat 'men', Edwards, Obama, Clinton, Gore, and Kerry.  None of them is a true 'man'.  They're just drones working for their Queen Bee(s).  I don't think any of them produce enough testosterone to even realize what nancys they are.

Better the 80's than the 60's

Meanwhile the Dems are working feverishly to take us back to the late 60's and early 70's, what with all the Vietnam references and McGovernite policies. And for sheer excess, you can't find a better example than the hedonism, arrogance, and sheer conceit of liberal baby boomers then and now. When it comes to politics, I'd much rather relive the 80's than the hippie era.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

I was getting worried about

I was getting worried about the entertainment industry recently after the main character of "into the wild" being so glorified. If that kid is a hero, oh man.
