Reacting to Jon Stewart Plastering Nativity Over Vagina, NB Publisher Bozell Dares Comedian to Be 'Equal Opportunity Bigot'

By Brent Bozell | April 18, 2012 | 12:33

Brent Bozell's picture

Editor's Note: Today NewsBusters publisher and Media Research Center founder Brent Bozell publicly dared The Daily Show host Jon Stewart to desecrate either the Koran or the Torah on national television in the same manner he offended millions of American Christians by portraying the Nativity as an accessory for female genitals. Bozell makes the challenge well aware that Stewart’s brand of "comedy" applies only to liberal-approved anti-Christian bigotry [screen capture of that image follows page break; viewer discretion advised]:

Come on, Jon. We dare you to prove you are an equal opportunity bigot. Your grotesque stunt displaying a Nativity scene in a vulgar manner to take a jab at Fox News is but the latest in a long line of unacceptable behavior and hypocrisy when it comes to the media’s treatment of traditional Christianity. Doing something similar with the Koran or the Torah is equally offensive. Since you’re so brave to offend Christians, are you equally brave to offend Muslims and Jews? We dare you.

Stewart thought he was being cute when he displayed a manger scene in front of a woman’s genitals to mock those allegedly ignoring the 'war on women.' If he’s such a daring political comedian, he should demonstrate his boldness by performing the same routine, but this time with a Koran and the Torah.

Otherwise he is not only a bigot but also an outright coward.

He WON'T! Jon Stewart is a spineless, weak willed, smack talking, SOB who offered his manhood up to the LIBERAL media Gods long ago!!! He would no more insult any other religion than we would vote for Mitt Romney! To him the only religion worth insulting is Christianity, I and Believe I know why.
If he were to insult Jews by desecrating the Torah, then he would likely turn Jewish voters from his man crush barry. Not to mention that the JDL would brand him a Racist and his days of working with the rest of Hollywierd would be numbered.
If he were to desecrate the Koran, there would be a Fatweh put on him and he would be marked for DEATH! and of course he knows that if you insult muslims, the koran, mohammed, or anything associated with their religion you will be KILLED! Truth is jon stewart is a COWARD!!!

CO2, i certainly agree that this would be the right approach for Stewart; however,i think if BB, or anyone else, suggested that he behave this way (which i think they have, actually), he has no incentive to do so, and nothing to prove... Everyone expects him to be vulgar, insult peoples religion, and have a "dirty" act.

I kind of like BBs approach, show Stewart's hypocrisy in ONLY insulting Christianity. That would prove, leaving no room for debate, that he is a bigot since he will not insult the other religions "equally."

Tolerance is not required toward:

basically, any "majority" group.

Liberals hate all minority groups, so they are forever working hard to show "tolerance" toward them.

Conservatives are much simpler minded... respect everyone as individuals, until they earn less.

Most bullies are cowards. They only pick on those they know will not or cannot fight back.

Jon Stewart is a bully and a coward. He only picks on Christians because he knows they will not fight back - and in the rare case that they should, he can call them hypocrites. He will never insult the Jews or Islamists because it is well know that they will fight back. He's not stupid, just liberal and mean (but I repeat myself).

Haha!

Submitted by BosTarus on Wed, 04/18/2012 - 2:01pm.

Oh man, I love these absurd calls for "equal opportunity" bashing!

FIRST OFF, take it from someone who watches the show alot. He makes fun of Muslims and Jews. Alot. Especially extremists. I imagine most people here are only aware of Jon Stewart when he says something mean about Christians... then you call him a coward for not mocking Muslims.

SECONDLY, in the context of this bit, mocking Muslims would make NO SENSE. He isn't just "attacking Christians" for no reason-he's specifically talking about Fox news getting hot and bothered about the "War on Christmas" and ignoring the drummed up "War on Women". The joke then being, how do we get them to acknowledge a "War on Women?"-us a Nativity Scene. As you can see... the Koran doesn't factor into this IN ANY WAY. So just shoe horning in a joke about Muslims when it's completely unmotivated just doesn't really make sense.

And the reason he talks about Christianity MORE than Islam or Judaism? It's because we live in a predominantly Christian nation. Most of the people on his staff are Christians. Most of the people who watch his show are Christians. Most of the stories that touch upon religion, deal with Christianity. Because he covers American politics! The Bible gets brought up on the Senate floor a whole lot more than the Koran. It just wouldn't make sense for Jon Stewart, or any other American comedian/tv personality to mock, predominantly, the culture of a foreign nation. It'd be just as weird if a French political program covered, almost exclusively, the politics and culture of America.

You can look up his writing staff on line. Many of them are Jewish, if that's what you're implying-but certainly not all of them-or even the clear majority... but since there are alot of Jewish comedy writers, it's no surprise.

And do you really think his audience is only jewish? Just, statistically, that'd be hard to pull off. I'm catholic, and I'm a viewer. Now if you're only considering "practicing" Christians, that might be different. But I'm considering folks who were raised in a Christian household, even if they don't go to church every week.

by your question? I wasn't trying to make the claim that mocking Muslims is NEVER IN context... in fact, just above that I said that Jon does mock Muslims on occasion. This would be one of those occasions, I suppose. Thanks for pointing it out and supporting my first claim.

It makes sense here because the subject of the story was the hacked Assad emails... that was the story-so mocking him then made complete sense within context.

I'm saying that throwing in a joke about Muslims when the story you're covering has nothing to do with Muslims is "out of context". Not that Muslims are never in context and therefore free of all derision and mocking.

Seriously, please send the link, should be something on youTube. It's just that i have seen so little in the way of negative representations of Islamic profits as compared with negative representations of central Christian characters.

I'm not at all happy that he is vulgarizing other religions, mind you, i just have seen so little, i'd like to know the context and comparison.

I'm not going to go so far as to defend this joke-I felt it went too far. I was discussing Mr. Bozell's call for equal opportunity bashing, which I think is silly.

And in this case, I wasn't trying to make the claim that there was an equivalent Muslim joke told by Jon at some previous point... considering that most comedians wouldn't want to give the impression that they're recycling material, that'd be very unlikely. But more importantly, I'd highly doubt there was a news story that Jon has covered that would call for the same contextual treatment of Islamic imagery and a vagina.

I was just saying that Jon Stewart isn't afraid of Muslims or Jews. Simply that the majority of religious jokes on the show would be about the predominant religion of the culture he's commenting on.

to post this-but it's a great summation of his treatment of religion in general-Jews and Christians primarily-but they include all the rest. You clearly didn't watch the clip... or read your own post. Because I did EXACTLY what you asked-and somehow you accusing me of trying to throw you off the trail with "red herrings?" You're easily confused, aren't you.

You asked to see a clip that made fun of Muslims "IN ANY WAY"... the all-caps was all you. I think a clip that ends with a Gospel choir singing "Go F*** Yourself" to a Muslim group, though childish, is exactly that. And that's disregarding the rest of the clip which includes many criticisms and jokes (the story hit close to home for Jon, so he reacted a bit stronger than usual).

And I never made the claim that Jon Stewart ever did anything "equivalent" to putting the Nativity scene over a woman's vagina. I'm also not going to defend that joke. I was simply addressing everyone's complaint that he "only mocked" Christianity and was "too scared" to mock Jews or Muslims. Which is clearly not the case.

He definitely mocks Christians more than Muslims and Jews and other religions. But that was never my claim. If I gave that impression, I apologize. My argument is that he mocks Christians more than other religions because Christianity is the predominant religion in the culture on which he is usually commenting. But he isn't afraid to discuss other religions as everyone here seems to think.

Leftys drop the f bomb on TV more than The Messiah says "errrrr" without a teleprompter these days. Leibowitz wouldn't have the guts to do anything close to that Nativity thing to Islam, or there'd be a fatwah on him quicker than you can say Salman Rushdie. You don't get it, do you? Your man crush on Leibowitz is so strong that you can't see that he hasn't even come anywhere close to what he's done with the Nativity. Mr. Bozell was right, you're wrong. Leibowitz needs to go after Muslims, otherwise he's just another leftist Christian basher. Don't try to turn this on me son, and try to pretend you're not making an indefensible argument by saying I'm easily confused. I won't fall for your sorry red herrings. Any high school debate teacher'd fail you with that sorry argument

You can't just change the argument as you move along and accuse me of failing to answer to you. First off, I NEVER claimed there was anything that Stewart did that was as bad as the Nativity joke-which is what you seem to think is the central claim of my argument.

Secondly, you originally asked for any clip in which he's mocking Muslims... I'm sorry if it doesn't come off as mean enough for your tastes, but it is exactly that. I did not try to claim that that clip was as offensive as the nativity joke, however. I just provided a clip in which a group of Muslims was his target.

Lastly, changing his name does not make him a self-hating Jew. He talks about himself as a Jew in virtually every episode. MANY celebrities change their name-doesn't mean they're ashamed of their heritage. If he was ashamed of his, I doubt he'd highlight it as constantly as he does.

I guess you don't understand what....

Submitted by TempusFugit on Wed, 04/18/2012 - 9:21pm.

...making fun of something means, and as you're a fan of Leibowitz, that's not surprising. Making fun would be something like this: Leibowitz says he's becoming a Muslim, goes to Mecca and finds it's a strip club (like the 911 hijackers visited before the hijackings). That'd be damn funny but he'd never do it because he'd have a price on his head, and also he'd lose his Hollywood Lefty card. Or maybe have Mohammed eating a BLT, or Muslims praying 5 times a day wearing knee pads. All he did was flip his middle finger at them. How brave, and also, how clever /sarc. Yes, it isn't mean enough for me. It's not nearly as mean as the nativity/vagina thing. So that proves Leibowitz is a coward and a hypocrite. He's plenty mean to Christians who he knows won't fight back, he knows he's got the entire Hollywood Lefty establishment at his back and he knows if he came anywhere close to that with Islam he'd have to go into hiding like Rushdie. Mr Bozell is challenging him to become that mean with Muslims and prove he's the centrist that he (Leibowitz) claims to be. I'm not holding my breath.

I don't know how often he refers to his heritage. I don't get a thrill up my leg watching the guy like some people here do. Why isn't it the Daily Show with Jon Leibowitz? Most celebs these days keep their real names.

I invite you to take your act on the road. Personally, all of the "damn funny" bits you just thought of sound completely unfunny to me. But hey, you know alot more about real comedy than I. So, please, take your show public. I'd love to watch your stellar climb to comedy gold. Because clearly you're doing something right, and Mr. "Leibowitz" is just a putz without an audience.

Also, I guess you missed the pigskin joke with the Muslim boy in that clip. Oh well.

Also, you're in the dark if you think all celebrities these days keep their "real names". Especially since Jon Stewart started back in the early 80s, when that was certainly not the case. I can assure you, Jon Stewart is not a "self hating Jew"... well, no more than your average Jew, at least.

My Mecca as a strip club was certainly funnier than Leibowitz doing a bad James Brown in the Blues Brothers movie impression. That gospel choir thing was painful to watch. In fact, I can't think of anything that he himself (as opposed to stuff his staff comes up with, like the reporter at OWS) came up with that was actually funny. But I guess when people are stoned, they find a self hating Jew mugging for the camera to be hysterical

"It'd be just as weird if a French political program covered, almost exclusively, the politics and culture of America."

European countries happen to cover a lot of American politics, entertainment, celebrity culture; much more than America covers of Europe. They know who all the Republican nominees are.

Its also not weird at all, in the context of history, to mock the politics and culture of a foreign nation.

"Most of the people who watch his show are Christians. Most of the stories that touch upon religion, deal with Christianity."

The majority of people are not very religious, somewhat agnostic, and rarely if never attend Church. Religious Christians are probably as foreign to his audience as are Muslims.

I think its silly to call Jon Stewart a bigot. I do think he's living in a kind of intellectual bubble where Fox News is the enemy and he goes after easy targets, while sometimes showing some modest degree of evenhandedness.

JasonC, No war on Christmas?

Submitted by Liberallies on Wed, 04/18/2012 - 11:36pm.

JasonC,

No war on Christmas? You certainly buy into the lies of the Left! The only radical, dangerous and delusional individuals in America are the individuals who deny the fact that too many people on the Left wage a war on Christmas.

So, last year when my son's public school forbade the school choir from singing Christmas songs, from saying anything related to Christmas, this wasn't anyone forcing my son not to celebrate the way he and other Christians wanted, right?

When my sister, who used to teach at a public school, was scolded and warned not to say to anyone Merry Christmas while inside the public school she used to teach at, this wasn't a war on Christmas, right?

When Left wingers and Atheist run around towns in the USA demanding that Nativity scenes be removed from public land because it supposedly means that the government is endorsing Christianity, this is no war on Christmas, right? You must not have heard of the ACLU.

Today, I can celebrate Christmas as I want inside of my home. But if I "dare" go to a public school, a State university, a court house, etc and attempt to celebrate Christmas in public, I run the risk of being fined and losing my job!

When a government employee is asked to remove all reference to Christmas from his/her public place of work, this is no attack on the way this individual wants to celebrate Christmas, right?

When my local park district stopped doing a Christmas Carol, not the book, but people singing Christmas songs around the neighborhood because a radical and delusional Left winger complained, this isn't the war on Christmas, right?

When my son, when my nieces, when my nephews are told by a radical and delusional public school teacher that the birth of Jesus Christ is a myth, nah....no war on Christmas.

When a college professor attempted to intimidate me attempting to use the backing of the State school so I would stop saying Merry Christmas to students, nah, no war on Christmas, right?

People are NOT choosing to use the seasonal greeting I would like. they are being brainwashed by radicals that saying Merry Christmas is not inclusive enough. According to the delusional Left wing radicals we must use Happy Holidays to be inclusive.

The only delusional and radicals when it comes to the very real war on Christmas is the wackos who love to deny it.

but that is what radicals who attack things do, deny they are attacking anything and label those who point out to the very real attacks wackos and delusional.

Stop living in your Liberal bubble JasonC, it makes you sound delusional and radical.

US Politicians

Submitted by Agnostic on Thu, 04/19/2012 - 11:28am.

Perhaps not exactly what you are after but you could look at anyone in the WH or the State Department going back to mid 90s with the US's involvement of destroying a predominately Christian community in favor of an Islamic force albeit with bad intelligence and a faith in like minded liars and thieves (think Food for Oil).

http://online.wsj.com/public/resources/documents/pearl123199.htm

The examples of US politicians using Islam (or Anti-Israel Statements) as either a fund raising base or a way of politicizing issues is endless.

Stewart has a right to his opinion and while it is my opinion that there has to be a strong vein of truth in satire and ridicule as comedy in order for it to be funny and Stewart does not meet this criteria frequently enough for me - Stewart has obviously won a strong fan base and he should be congratulated for his success. All successful people have their detractors and generally they just laugh all the way to the bank at the criticism.

Also, other examples could be the Islamic judge presided over a case in which a Muslim attacked an American citizen over an unfavorable costume. The politicians that take money from groups like the MPAC even after their ties to the MB and their obvious PR campaigns become well established. The police investigations in which politicians have stepped in and declared some type of 'routine violence' or even 'islamaphobia' when the evidence points to Sharia endorsed beatings and killings.

It was the best thing I could do for myself, for now I have a calmer approach to politics. And when you say "slimed", sometimes the calling becomes so powerful that you can't resist giving a piece of your mind, and that is what happened here.

And I stand by my comment about "race-baiting" based on this simple principle: Never be a victim. Don't let yourself be victimized, but don't cry "victim" either. That is something I learned as I self -examined my old lefty past as I try to construct a better future for myself. So there.
