For Schieffer, GOP ‘Too Far to the Right’ and Too Obsessed with Birth Control While Obama Presidency Succeeding

By Brent Baker | February 26, 2012 | 19:15

CBS’s Bob Schieffer, on Sunday morning’s Face the Nation, pressed Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie over how Republicans have moved “too far to the right” to win before cuing up Maryland’s Democratic Governor, Martin O’Malley, to agree while fretting “we’ve spent the last couple of weeks here talking about running against birth control for goodness sake” – as if the media have nothing to do with that. Schieffer twice falsely credited President Obama for having “backed away” from requiring religious institution cover birth control.

Schieffer also marveled over Obama’s presumed success and so wondered: “How do you go after Barack Obama, though, right now? I mean, the stock market is up. It looks like the unemployment is going down. David Axelrod in his campaign said the other day Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive. It’s going to be a tough job for you, is it not?”

(Last Sunday, February 19, Meet the Press host David Gregory touted how “I see this bumper sticker,” which, he insisted, “we’ve heard everybody talk about,” that proclaims “GM’s back on top, and Osama bin Laden is dead.”)

Audio: MP3 clip

While O’Malley is trying to impose a whole range of tax increases on the citizens of Maryland, including the income and the gas tax, Schieffer failed to ask if that might hurt any economic recovery, yet scolded Christie for his proposed ten percent income tax rate reduction to be enacted over three years starting in 2013: “Can New Jersey really afford that right now?”

(A year ago – February 27, 2011 -- on the very same program Schieffer implored Christie: “You have a reputation as a straight talker, I think. Do you believe that the budgetary problems across this country can be resolved without raising taxes?”)

Back to this Sunday, a baffled Schieffer ruminated:

We’ve spent the last couple of weeks here talking about running against birth control for goodness sake. I mean, I admit, I mean, I believe the President made a serious political mistake when he tried to say to the Catholic Church, you have to buy birth control pills for the folks that work in your hospitals and your schools and so forth. But he backed away from that. And yet, the Republicans keep pushing. They say that’s not enough. That you’ve got to be totally against the birth control.

Of course, Schieffer was unable to identify any candidate who is saying “you’ve got to be totally against the birth control.”

Then with O’Malley, he repeated the claim Obama “did back away” on the birth control mandate, and proceeded to again express bewilderment that’s not good enough for Republicans: “But is that going to be an issue, this whole idea of birth control, is that going to be an issue in this campaign?”

Next, Schieffer cued up O’Malley to denounce Republicans as extremists: “Well do you think it’s good for the President if Republicans try to concentrate on social issues?”

From the Sunday, February 26 Face the Nation on CBS:

BOB SCHIEFFER, TO CHRIS CHRISTIE: Do you think Rick Santorum and, well, the candidates in general, are pushing your party too far to the right to make the nomination worth anything when you get to November?
...

BOB SCHIEFFER: But what I’m wondering about is his concentration on social issues. Al Simpson, who used to be a Senator from Wyoming, and has a way of putting a point on things.

GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE: Sure does. I like him.

BOB SCHIEFFER: He said the other day, well, here’s what he said about if you go too far on these social issues.

ALAN SIMPSON: I am convinced that if you get into these social issues and just stay in there about abortion and homosexuality and even mental health they bring up, if we’re going to do that -- and here’s a party that believes in government out of your life, the precious right of privacy, and the right to be left alone. How then can they be the hypocrisy of fiddling around in these social issues? We won’t have a prayer.

BOB SCHIEFFER: Do you agree with that?

GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE: I don’t. Because I don’t think there’s been this enormous emphasis on it. Listen, we’ve gone through a couple of weeks where Senator Santorum has made some comments....But what people care about the most is getting a job, being able to put food on the table, being able to pay their mortgage. Those are the things they care the most about. Those are the issues Governor Romney is facing head on right now. And will take the President on the fall over.

BOB SCHIEFFER: But I wonder how you get the focus back to that if you do because, I mean, you know, we’ve spent the last couple of weeks here talking about running against birth control for goodness sake. That you’ve got to be totally against the birth control the way some of, I mean how-

GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE: But I don’t think, I don’t think, you know, most Republicans have said that. I certainly was asked about this, this in just a week.

BOB SCHIEFFER: Well, that’s certainly what Santorum has been pushing.
...

BOB SCHIEFFER: How do you go after Barack Obama, though, right now? I mean, the stock market is up. It looks like the unemployment is going down. David Axelrod in his campaign said the other day Osama bin Laden is dead and General Motors is alive. It’s going to be a tough job for you, is it not?
...

BOB SCHIEFFER: Let me ask you about something you’ve proposed in your state, a ten percent across the board tax hike. Can New Jersey really afford that right now?

GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE: Yeah, a tax cut.

BOB SCHIEFFER: Tax cut, yeah.

GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE: A tax cut. Yeah, we can afford it now because we’ve made a lot of very hard decisions the last two years....Imagine New Jersey, Bob, people getting their taxes lowered every year for three years? People will become disoriented by that, given the history.

...

To Martin O’Malley:

BOB SCHIEFFER: What do you make of Rick Santorum’s remark this week that the President is a snob because he wants everyone to go to college? He said this morning there are a lot of people who are plumbers and have other jobs that are also good Americans. I mean, I don’t quite get what that was about. Would you, what’s your take on that?
....

BOB SCHIEFFER: You know, even some Democrats, and I talked about this with Governor Christie, believe that the President made, just from the standpoint of practical politics, a mistake when he came out with a plan that was interpreted to say that the Catholic Church had to buy birth control pills for people who worked in Catholic hospitals and so on. He did back away from that. But is that going to be an issue, this whole idea of birth control, is that going to be an issue in this campaign?
....

BOB SCHIEFFER: Well do you think it’s good for the President if Republicans try to concentrate on social issues?

I doubt any of us would disagree Obama is succeeding.  It may cost him the election, but his attempts to hamstring America's economic engine have been a smashing success.

Schieffer's made his millions.  He can afford a lot of what the crushed middle class has to pawn just to tread water.

The GOP is focusing on contraception?

Submitted by Radical1979 on Sun, 02/26/2012 - 7:40pm.

Wasn't it Snufalufagous who first brought it up? Isn't it the MSM who keeps hammering away at it?

They can spin all they want, but I think gas prices and the effect on the economy will be the main focus of the election. The MSM however, will try to turn attention away from it, but it's not going to work.

Ms. Lovely Rad, I'm pretty

Submitted by killa37 on Sun, 02/26/2012 - 8:59pm.

Ms. Lovely Rad, I'm pretty sure that the REGIME was behind this whole psuedo contraception issue, and of course, Georgy Porgy and the rest of the State Run Media dutifully followed their orders, so as to distract from more serious and pressing issues, make the Republicans look like a bunch of narrow-minded zealots, possibly turn women back towards Boy Barry, and continue to 'get his back' in any, and every, way possible.

Of course, the Republicans - ACES at snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, as well as emasculating themselves whenever possible - have followed right along with it, and if they DO try to expand the discussion, they will be pigeon-holed again by the MSM. I'm glad Santorum took the offensive about this today, but these wimp-assed Repubs NEED to get bad, jump bad, act bad, and stay bad.....................there is no future for sissies and queebies in this race!! And even Boy Barry, who is the epitome of a sissified woosie-assed tilley, is quite adept a playing hardball - it's just that he has other people do his dirty work.

Obama's problem with women will likely be at the grocery store. As the price of gas and groceries increase moms, especially single moms will stop caring about birth control and worry about food.

Yep, for as limp wristed as obama is, he's pretty good at digging up dirt and using it isn't he? Was it posted here that his campaign has emailed dems in PA looking for dirt on Santorum. Wouldn't it be great if someone had some pictures of Obama in a "compromising" position?

As long as...

Submitted by jdripper on Sun, 02/26/2012 - 7:54pm.

This idiot primary continues defeating Barack Obama becomes more and more of a pipe dream. Rick Santorum has his one shot he and his SuperPAC as well as labor unions, Moveon.org, other liberal organizations, teacher unions, Obama's SuperPAC, Obama's campaign, and the National, State and local Democrat's are outspending Romney in MI. They are pitting Obama's and the labor unions organizations against Romney's organization and frankly if they fail to beat him then Santorum needs to give serious thought to quitting the campaign.

The Republicans had successfully steered clear of the social issues until Santorum suddenly took to the lead. They are a non winner in the general election and as we have seen over and over Santorum is not handling this well at all. With everything going in his direction Santorum needs to quit if he wakes up Wednesday morning and he has lost the major race in a State where Romney has not lived for over 30 years.

The press is concentrating on this one issue and avoiding at all costs to give any attention to any other subject with Santorum. Santorum is not the one bringing it up. Romaney and the press are dwelling on the social issues. Romney wants the presidency so bad he is willing to do or say anything no matter how much it hurts our chances to win in 2012.

Romney has flip-flopped on many issues and if he gets the nomination he will be crucified by the press. He favors more gun control and that disqualifies him for me. He helped bankrupt Mass. and will do the same for America. Romney is far from being a true conservative.

for the left, Romney poses the least risk.

Submitted by humanzee on Mon, 02/27/2012 - 1:53am.

The risk assessed choice for the liberal movement is Romney.

Santorum is a real risk for their cause because he is a legitimately conservative Republican. They want a low risk/high reward scenario in 2012.

In their eyes, Romney succeeds in pushing conservatism to the margins and out of the way for 8 years if he wins and 4 years if he loses.

Conservatives can't win if they don't play. If they aren't batting in 2012, there is no way in hell they can win. If Romney is the nominee, liberals are in a win-tie scenario instead of a win-lose scenario.

They know Romney is going in to solely focus on Wall Street and Iran instead of focusing on domestic issues. Romney's message is basically that the plebs have a social safety net, the economy will fix itself over time, and that the important issue is isolating and insulating the financial sector from further trouble. They know his history as a one and out governor. They know he'll bend on things that aren't extremely important to his handlers. Nothing in his Massachusetts record points to him ever trying to pick a fight with labor unions in the same fashion as Chris Christie or Scott Walker. As a Massachusetts Republican governor, he didn't step on a lot of Democrat toes. Romney isn't the "right to work" guy. Romney's claim to fame was bending to the liberals on healthcare. The only thing Romney stuck his neck out for was Romneycare.

For liberals, Romney is the perfect Republican, the perfect patsy. The social liberal activists don't see him as a huge threat if he could ever win, unions don't see him as a likely threat to their expansion. They think his lack of appeal to social conservatives makes him vulnerable to Obama because he'll lack a grassroots base. They see him a containable on all fronts.

Santorum is a risk for the liberal movement. They know that he's likely to want to do serious work and not just focus on one segment of society. If Santorum is the nominee, conservatives have a chance at winning and pushing real domestic policy on all fronts. Santorum will have that grassroots support. They know that any screw up by their Obama like a sex scandal, fast and furious impeachment will screw over their causes in the long run. The left fears Santorum because he adheres to a real ideology. They don't think they can contain Santorum because he has a base and an ideology.

This is going to be their tactic for the rest of the year; they are just going to TELL us that everything is looking good and how can Obama possibly lose when he is doing such a swell job?

And they will manufacture every kind of distraction to help him with his lies. Pay no attention to the economy....Mr Santorum, how old is the Earth?

Good grief, here we go. Ask questions all about birth control, then say GOP is obsessed with birth control.

No, the media is obsessed with it, working for the Obama's re-election by providing cover.

That frame is too small.

Submitted by CobraMan on Mon, 02/27/2012 - 3:29pm.

Just keep framing it as Republicans again Birth Control, you MSM hacks. We, The People, see just how small that frame really is. WE know it's about the President mandating things that are far outside his authority, but, hay, don;t let reality get in the way of a good Republican bashing, ok?

How long do you think it will be until the Liberal media start openly promoting instructions in how to Tar and Feather the Republicans, just like New York Times did during Lincoln's election? I know JournaList has already posted their instructions to the liberal members of the press, but how long until it's openly publicized so that everyone can enjoy skewering a Republican every chance we get?
