Schieffer Hits Christie for How He ‘Demonized Teachers’ and Presses Him to Offer ‘Straight Talk’ on Raising Taxes
CBS’s Bob Schieffer hit Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie from the left on Sunday’s Face the Nation, claiming he has “demonized” teachers and urging him to give some “straight talk” about the necessity to raise taxes.
After asking if he thinks “Governor Walker out there in Wisconsin has gone too far?” in trying to end collective bargaining, Schieffer ludicrously asserted “everybody in this country on all sides of this thinks we need education reform,” but he wanted to know if Christie realized his stance has “demonized teachers and will raise questions in young people's minds as to whether they want to go into the profession?”
“Banal Bob” soon implored Christie with his standard plea: “You have a reputation as a straight talker, I think. Do you believe that the budgetary problems across this country can be resolved without raising taxes?”
Christie zinged Schieffer with solid retorts to Schieffer’s left-wing presumptions, telling Schieffer “I disagree with the premise of your question which is that everybody agrees there should be education reform. It’s everybody but the teachers union who believes that everything is fine.”
On increasing taxes: “We raised taxes and fees 115 times in the last eight years. And we still have one of the worst budget problems in America.”
From the Sunday, February 27 Face the Nation on CBS:
BOB SCHIEFFER: You really came on hard against the teachers' union. I think everybody in this country on all sides of this thinks we need education reform, that we got to do something to make our educational system better. Do you worry that the stance you have taken has somehow demonized teachers and will raise questions in young people's minds as to whether they want to go into the profession?
GOVERNOR CHRIS CHRISTIE: No, I don't. I think quite the opposite. Listen, I think that the teachers in New Jersey and there's thousands and thousands of great ones, deserve a union as good as they are. They don't have it. And I disagree with the premise of your question which is that everybody agrees there should be education reform. It’s everybody but the teachers union who believes that everything is fine. If you listen to them in New Jersey they'll tell you everything is fine. It's great. It's great except for the 104,000 kids in New Jersey that are stuck in 200 chronically failing schools....
SCHIEFFER: You have a reputation as a straight talker, I think. Do you believe that the budgetary problems across this country can be resolved without raising taxes?
CHRISTIE: Let's take New Jersey, for instance, Bob. We raised taxes and fees 115 times in the last eight years. And we still have one of the worst budget problems in America. And so I think unless you deal with the underlying structural expense problems -- and we've been dealing with them in New Jersey -- there’s no amount of taxation will keep up with the amount of spending increase that we have....

CHEERS TO GOVERNOR CHRISTIE

I saw this interview and I think that the Obama softness that has gripped the "drive by" media has engulfed their ability to think and do and honest and respectful interview. Hopefuuly, straight talkers like Governor Christie will help snap them out of it and responsible journalism will come back to Main Street
Bob Schieffer snap out of it?

I would like to see all Republican politicians boycott each and every of Obama's media outlets from now until election day 2012.
Not one of them is interested in what the guest has to say, rather the interviewer bombards them with rehashed White House talking points or argues the left wing bomb throwers side of current events like some Obama cult member on Kool - Aid.
" FOX NETWORKS " and the conservative bloggers, etc. offer more than enough honest exposure. Besides these outlets are where the majority of Americans, including many dems turn to get the real news anyway.

I would pay money to see Chris Christy go against Ed Schultz or Rachel Maddow. on their shows. It would be great fun to see him take intellectually take them apart.

I'm not sure whom you're praying to, but I'm sure that Mitch wouldn't appreciate that. He wants a truce on "social" issues, you know.

Yep, keep raising those taxes another 115 times and maybe, just maybe we'll have a balanced budget.

Schieffer can't get it through his thick skull that people will actually pay extra to get FOX News when the News arm of his own institution has to rely on the success of its sitcoms.
How about CBS requires the actors in said sitcoms to kick in an extra 10% so there will be no more cutbacks in the CBS newsroom.
He is CBS, isn't he?

Oregon passed two tax measures in 2010 to retroactively tax the wealthy and businesses to avoid a budget shortfall. Guess what happened, still had the budget shortfall and pissed off every major employer in your state, good plan Oregon.
Straight Talk.

That is what is happening all over this country. The substance is that raising taxes as the solution is not happening this time (outside Obamaland) and that the spending must be addressed (cut).
It is like the illegal immigration debate. No more will the race card stifle the reality that the border and Citizenship status must be dealt with properly before anything else happens on that front.
Progressive Liberalism is going extinct before our eyes and some in the Old Media aren't dealing with that reality very well. They have failed and like an alcoholic refusing to admit their problem exists, they deny, deny, deny, deny.

"they deny,deny,deny"
Right on. The only reason for talking to a modern "liberal" at all is to expose the nation to the truth by telling the truth ( something a "liberal" will never do). And every time a conservative does talk to them, he/she has to be prepared for a verbal assault --- lies and innuendo used as weapons. Be ready to shut down them down. Christie seems ready for it, as does Rand Paul . Some of the others?--not so much.
NEVER,NEVER trust a "liberal" ( progresive)

They all think they're going to convert the uncovertable with their rationale. An absolute miscalculation of the worst kind. You'd be better off talking to a wall. My only gripe with this is when they go on these shows and subject themselves to the liberal line of questioning, they are not forceful enough in pushing back at the host exposing their liberal bias.
OK, here's the optimist in me.

Teacher Reform
Submitted by swiftnick on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 12:09pm.
What is truly needed is teacher reform. The right of tenure should be eliminated in public schools and public school teachers should be required to submit to annual merit evaluations on which raises and promotions are determined.
The end result attempting to
Submitted by Miss_Me_Yet on Mon, 02/28/2011 - 1:09pm.
The end result attempting to be accomplished across this nation IS teacher reform. Unfortunately, with corrupt, and they are all corrupt, unions with forced ( collective bargaining ) policies that protect the bad, sometime criminal teachers, the deck is stacked agaist the American taxpayer, worse yet our children.
There are as many failing schools, as not in this country. The root of all the problems lie with the teachers and the corrupt unions whom are paid hansomely to protect them, even when they've broken the law.
The wave of Charter schools introduced during the Bush administration, against the objection of the teachers and unions, have proven once and for all, it's not the students, parents or governer that are the problem.
We the People are not going back to the status quo when it comes to the criminal enterprise that is public education in America.
So all you whiney libs, good for nothing teachers and criminal union bosses, it's time YOU sat down & shut the _____ up for a change. There's a new wind of change blowing through America, just in time to clear your stench out of our Capitol buildings, classrooms and our children's lives if you can't conform. There are plenty of more qualified, dedicated, real Americans just waiting to take your place. The decision, for right now anyway, is yours.
