NBC Nightly News Finally Mentions Obama Mandate Imposition on Catholics; Still Waiting for ABC and CBS

NBC Nightly News on Monday lifted its two-plus week blackout of the Obama administration’s decision to force religious institutions, such as Catholic hospitals and charities, to provide birth control coverage in health insurance provided to employees, but ABC’s World News and the CBS Evening News have still yet to utter a syllable about what has enraged people across the political spectrum while having plenty of time to champion Planned Parenthood’s attacks on the Komen foundation.

NBC’s Chuck Todd on Monday evening found a few seconds in a larger story to relay how the Republican presidential candidates “are hitting the Obama administration’s decision to require all health insurance plans to cover birth control. Many Catholic organizations had hoped for an exemption since the rule runs counter to the church’s doctrine. Today Mitt Romney’s campaign launched a petition drive to repeal the decision, and Newt Gingrich also sounded off.”

The only previous ABC, CBS or NBC morning or evening newscast mention of the decision, revealed back on Friday, January 20, came in one brief newsbite ten days later on CBS This Morning, the MRC’s Matthew Balan documented in a Media Reality Check on Friday, “Media Go to Bat for Abortion Giant, Ignore Catholics vs. Obama Controversy; Study: 76% of Soundbites Favored Planned Parenthood Over Komen.”

Balan updated his numbers today (“Nets Hype Social Media ‘Torrent’ in Komen Uproar, Keep Pro-Abortion Slant”) to include the Friday night and weekend newscasts, bringing to 20 the total segments and interviews on Planned Parenthood/Komen run on the ABC, CBS and NBC morning and evening shows.

In addition to the one, brief item on CBS’s morning show, as I recounted Monday morning (“Network Newscast Blackout of Mandate on Catholics Continues, But Sunday Talk Shows Take It Up”), during their roundtables ABC’s This Week and NBC’s Meet the Press discussed the Obama administration’s assault on religious liberty while guest Newt Gingrich brought it up on Face the Nation.

But ABC, CBS and NBC have yet to run a full story or interview segment on the mandate which has caused major consternation amongst Catholic leaders and religious liberty champions.

From the Monday, February 6 NBC Nightly News:

CHUCK TODD: ...All the candidates are hitting the Obama administration’s decision to require all health insurance plans to cover birth control. Many Catholic organizations had hoped for an exemption since the rule runs counter to the church’s doctrine. Today Mitt Romney’s campaign launched a petition drive to repeal the decision, and Newt Gingrich also sounded off.

NEWT GINGRICH, ON MEET THE PRESS: Every time you turn around, secular government is closing in on and shrinking the right of religious liberty in America.

TODD: The White House continued to defend the decision today, but Jay Carney did sort of leave open this idea there could be compromises on how it’s implemented from church to church or organization to organization.

call to arms

The Catholic Church cannot budge one inch on this or it will delegitimize the church and it's doctrine.

Any though this is bad enough, anyone thinking this would satisfy the government and they wouldn't come up with more later, is a moron.

obama's war on America

Submitted by MidAmerica on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 10:13pm.

This action by the obama administration is a huge political blunder. Masses of opposition will now rise up against obama that his syncophants cannot just swat away by calling it racism. Young, old, rich and poor will oppose an attack on religion whether it is theirs or not.

I'm not Catholic but if there is a protest demonstration near me I will join it.

Hope to see you there.  But most people don't understand. This attack isn't just against the Catholic Church.  It is just another play in Obama's playbook for the government to control all aspects of our lives.

Government control

Submitted by Radical1979 on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 10:23pm.

This isn't the first attempt Obama has made at government control of all aspects of our lives. I was very upset when the government took over control of school loans. How long will it be before the government denies someone admission to a school by withholding a school loan. This will be done in an effort to "diversify" schools.

I'm sure they chose the issue of birth control thinking most Catholics use it and wouldn't get upset about forcing the Church to supply it. Thankfully many people see this for what it really is, an attempt to control.

Re government control of all

Submitted by motherbelt on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 10:56pm.

Re government control of all aspects of our lives:

Carney explains why the White House is insisting on this:

“I understand that there have been objections and that some people disagree with us and we are going to work with institutions that have concerns here,”

<Chris Matthews imitation>   HA!!

But I think it’s important to note here that we believe these services are important and that American women deserve to have access to that kind of insurance coverage regardless of where they work.”

Does this guy hear himself when he's talking?

They're going to "work with" the Catholic Church but still force it to do something against its teaching?

It's not only the Catholic Church.  Consider the ramifications when the government takes upon itself not only the judgment of who "deserves" what, but the authority to force someone else to give it to them, even when doing so violates their religious laws!

The Obama Administration

Submitted by stratman on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 11:55pm.

The Obama Administration should be investigated and charged under the RICO Act. Obama and henchmen are thug mobsters strong-arming, money laundering, and blackmailing the citizens of the USA, not to mention payola and kickbacks, all under the blessing of a corrupt Attorney General and a cadre of fellow traveler judges. The rule of law is as malleable as the Constitution to this bunch.

I said before his election that Obama would be worse poison than Nixon and he has lived down to my every expectation and more.

The MSM also won't mention

Submitted by celator on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 11:19pm.

The MSM also won't mention that Obama announced his free for all contraception and morning after pill only three days before the 2012 March For Life in Washington. This would highlight Obama's "I am boss and you are not" attitude toward us.Can't do that.

Nor will they mention that Obama specifically said, in his infamous Notre Dame speech, that he would honor the "conscious clause" when it came to abortion. Obama told Notre Dame graduates and guests in May 2009: “Let’s honor the conscience of those who disagree with abortion, and draft a sensible conscience clause, and make sure that all of our health care policies are grounded in clear ethics and sound science, as well as respect for the equality of women.”

Obama, as everyone with at least two brains cells surely knows by now, is a compulsive liar.

Joseph Stalin and today's Liberals

Submitted by MidAmerica on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 11:27pm.

America is like a healthy body and its resistance is threefold: its patriotism, its morality and its spiritual life. If we can undermine these three areas, America will collapse from within. – Joseph Stalin

Censorship is alive and well.......

Submitted by Herbster on Tue, 02/07/2012 - 10:51am.

Another example of "Journalism by omission." These people are not journalists, they are enablers. They openly shill for the current occupant of the White House, his minions, and denigrate anything said in disagreement with the current regime. That is their job now - get the daily talking points from the administration and regurgitate them all day. If a Republican says, "Good morning," report that he is a racist homophobe who doesn't want women to have access to "Women's health."

Tha Catholic Church needs to stand in 100% solidarity here. If not, this will be the beginning of the destruction of not only this church, but the eroding of all faiths. Priests, Rabbis, Ministers and Pastors need to link arms on this, for they surely will be next to be attacked by the anti-faith, anti-family propaganda machine.

I sense that the regime will back off this anti Catholic edict - for now - and regroup for the signing of an executive order after the (Re) election. This will give give the regime cover - for now - to win the democratic/Catholic vote. Do not be fooled. The left never gives up. They keep coming back like untreated herpes.

Pray for our nation!
