Network Newscast Blackout of Mandate on Catholics Continues, But Sunday Talk Shows Take It Up

The broadcast network evening and morning newscast blackout, of the Obama administration plan to force health insurance offered by Catholic charities and hospitals to cover sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs and contraception without a co-pay, continued over the weekend, yet the ABC and NBC Sunday morning talk shows took up the topic.

Meanwhile, the media double standard in ignoring the ObamaCare imposition on religious institutions while jumping to defend Planned Parenthood when Komen pulled funding, is being noticed by media observers ranging from from Fox News to even a New York Times columnist.

Guest Newt Gingrich raised, on both CBS’s Face the Nation and NBC’s Meet the Press, the Obama administration’s “war on religion,” prompting semi-conservative New York Times columnist David Brooks to address the subject, and the media’s lack of concern, at the start of the NBC show’s roundtable segment:

One of the things that’s happened over the past two weeks is, Gingrich talked about it, this issue with the Catholic hospitals and the Catholic service providers. It’s not been a big story in the media and I think it’s because we’re too secular, but it’s out in pulpits. In Catholic and Protestant pulpits across America it’s a huge issue, the idea, the perception that the President is assaulting religious freedom....

Over on ABC’s This Week, ex-Democratic operative George Stephanopoulos saw trouble for Obama – but he’s never bothered mentioning it on Good Morning America, which he co-hosts.

After playing a clip of House Speaker John Boehner declaring “This mandate violates our Constitution. I think it violates the rights of these religious organizations and I would hope that the administration would back up and take another look at this,” Stephanopoulos warned: “Even some of the President’s prominent Catholic liberal supporters said he went too far here.”

Left-wing online media modul Arianna Huffington, of the AOL Huffington Post Media Group, came to Obama’s defense:

Well, actually what the White House has said is that they have a year in which to work with Catholic institutions to find ways in which they can provide contraception for their employees, many of whom are not Catholic, and they have a year in which to work that out. Charities are not going to be affected. We are talking about Catholic hospitals that employ a lot of non-Catholics.

As the MRC’s Matthew Balan documented in a Friday Media Reality Check, “Media Go to Bat for Abortion Giant, Ignore Catholics vs. Obama Controversy,” the ABC, CBS and NBC morning and evening newscasts have imposed a near-total blackout of the insurance coverage mandate: “It took CBS ten days to air one news brief about the controversy on CBS This Morning on January 30. Neither ABC nor NBC have aired anything on their morning and evening newscasts over the past two weeks, and CBS hasn’t done anything since giving that one brief.”

None offered any attention on Saturday or Sunday outside of their Sunday morning talk shows.

On FNC’s Fox News Watch on Saturday, Jim Pinkerton noticed the disparity with Planned Parenthood v Komen:

Matthew Balan, of the Media Research Center, made the great point, look, while the mainstream media were stone silent on this issue, the mainstream media that is, they were all over the Susan Komen-Planned Parenthood story. They’re sort of similar news holes in terms of, you know, in terms of sexual-religious issues, and yet the media completely pummeled the Komen foundation – front page story, lead of everything – and ignored this. Kind of interesting why, because on the one hand they were rooting for Planned Parenthood; on the other hand they were rooting against the Catholic Church. Nothing new there, but quite stark in its contrast.”

Also on Saturday, New York Times columnist Ross Douthat, took the media to task on abortion. In “The Media’s Abortion Blinders,” Douthat asserted:

Conservative complaints about media bias are sometimes overdrawn. But on the abortion issue, the press’s prejudices are often absolute, its biases blatant and its blinders impenetrable. In many newsrooms and television studios across the country, Planned Parenthood is regarded as the equivalent of, well, the Komen foundation: an apolitical, high-minded and humanitarian institution whose work no rational person — and certainly no self-respecting woman — could possibly question or oppose.

For evidence, check this from the MRC’s TimesWatch: “NYT Sides With ‘Health Provider’ Planned Parenthood in ‘Partisan’ Komen Funding Cut-Off.”

Open letter to congress

Submitted by Willis_Leon_Johnson on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 11:12am.

Impeachment is not an 'option' to be waved as a meaningless threat, but a REQUIREMENT of your Oath of Office.

This cretin has been on a continuous crusade to destroy the Constitution, including the Bill of Rights, since taking office.

The failure of Congress to perform the REQUIRED Duties and responsibilities of their office is nothing short of Treason against the Constitution and the American Peoples.

End 'gun violence in America' - Require training and MANDATORY "Shall Carry" by every Citizen.

If harry reid is the best person to lead the senate, what does that say about the other 99 senators?

Don't forget....

Submitted by almostacowboy on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 12:15pm.

Supreme Court justices who feel that it is their responsibility to "look to the rest of the world" in order to decide an opinion. Ruth Bader Ginsburg has cited Islamic law in one decision and has openly declared that there is "nothing special" about the Constitution of the United States. Yet, millions (billions?) worldwide still look to the U.S. as the model of freedom and justice. They (the unnamed millions) must not be "progressive".

Congress should re-write the oath of office for Supreme Court justices to include statements to: a) defend and protect the Constitution of the United States; b) base their opinions on the Constitution of the U.S. and the laws of the United States.
The current oath does not include any such language. According to Title 28, Chapter I, Part 453 of the United States Code, each Supreme Court Justice takes the following oath:

"I, [NAME], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will administer justice without respect to persons, and do equal right to the poor and to the rich, and that I will faithfully and impartially discharge and perform all the duties incumbent upon me as [TITLE] under the Constitution and laws of the United States. So help me God."

Several of that bunch of liberal elitists have declared that 'foreign law should be looked to for guidance' should have been immediately Impeached and removed from office, and held in prison without bail until they were tried for either Treason, or a lesser charge of "Just too damned stupid to SERVE THE PEOPLE".

Foolish Idea

Submitted by John21 on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 11:20am.

Trying to acquire truth and honesty out of these organizations is a foolish idea.

The bias and prejudice of most of the mass media in America is very obvious. Their lack of anything like integrity is equal only to the DNC’s far left.
Their egos are huge with nothing to justify them. They used to try and hide the agenda but over the last 5 or 6 years they have decide that was unnecessary. The people of America who they fooled for a long time are seeing it and voting with their money and choosing a less bias news sources.
The ratings and profit margin are dropping for the propaganda news organizations so after the failure of the current administration is complete, they will try and attempt to hide their bias again until the next opportunity appears but I am not sure the people will fall for their ploys again (at least hope not). Their credibility is too severely damaged and their justification is way too small.

This is just another

Submitted by motherbelt on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 11:21am.

This is just another "shovel-ready" project for the maimstream media. They have to cover for their master.

Matt Lewis at the Daily Caller nails it:
The decision to require Catholic hospitals to provide contraceptives and abortifacients they deem immoral in their insurance plans, demonstrates either President Obama’s personal antagonism to religious liberty — or the degree to which he is beholden to the secular left.

Because it makes no political sense.

I'm going with the latter.

life versus death

Submitted by ohio granny on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 11:43am.

Life, the Koman foundation and the Catholic Church, versus death, Planned Parenthood and the MSM. Hypocrisy on display for the whole world to see.

Christianity = life , versus Sharia law = death if you become too westernized (especially for women). Hypocrisy on display again for the whole world to see.

What goes on in liberals/democrat brains to be so disconnected? Almost total silence on the Obama administrations edict that Catholic Hospitals and Schools must pay for birth control and other services that are against Church teachings.

Honor killings of Muslim women for becoming too westernized or being accused of having an affair, or for being raped. Again total silence from the MSM.

The one common thread between these two is they are almost exclusively women. Can't defund PP according to so-called womens rights groups, but total silence on the mistreatment of Muslim women. So does this mean they agree with this treatment or don't care what happens to Muslim females?

The question we have to ask is this? Why? and which is it?

Remember when...

Submitted by DumbCanuck on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 12:09pm.

"Well, actually what the White House has said is that they have a year in which to work with Catholic institutions to find ways in which they can provide contraception for their employees, many of whom are not Catholic, and they have a year in which to work that out."
--Arianna Huffington (note: Rich Text Editor is malfunctioning again)

I recall not to long ago liberals scoffing at the conservative argument that Homosexuals already have a right to marry -- as long as they marry someone of the opposite sex.

Ms. Huffington's remarks should fall under the same class of incredulity. Regardless how much time the "generous, well balanced, and reasonable" secular government gives the Church, the Church will NEVER find a way in which they can provide contraception without violating the very basic tenant of the faith.

Notice how the media is portraying the Owe-bummer regime as tolerant, well balanced, and reasonable, while the Catholic Church is being portrayed as militant, right-wing extremists?

Up is really down in this strange new world, isn't it?

Keep it up, Mr. President

Submitted by NC Boy on Mon, 02/06/2012 - 12:11pm.

I hope you stick to your bigoted secular guns on this, because it's the wedge issue that can cost you the election. And I'm confident that President Romney will reverse it during his first week in office.
