NBC’s Andrea Mitchell Regrets Republicans Lack ‘Courage’ to Raise Taxes

By Brent Baker | May 22, 2011 | 18:17

NBC’s Andrea Mitchell on Sunday conceded “Paul Ryan has shown considerable guts” with his Medicare plan, but she declared liberal Democratic Congressman Chris Van Hollen is “correct that nobody on the Republican side is showing any courage on the tax front. And unless taxes are part of the mix,” NBC’s chief foreign correspondent insisted in repeating the standard media refrain, “every grown-up knows” a deficit solution cannot be achieved.

The Washington Post’s Eugene Robinson soon picked up the liberal agenda, regretting “Republicans will not talk about tax increases” while Democrats, supposedly, “talk about a lot of budget cuts.”

Mitchell’s “courage” terminology matched that employed by Chrystia Freeland, global editor-at-large for Thomson-Reuters, who three weeks ago, on ABC’s This Week, contended a deficit-reduction agreement must include “raising taxes,” but “that's the thing that I think no one has the courage to talk about.”

From the roundtable on the Sunday, May 22 Meet the Press:

ANDREA MITCHELL: ...What you're [David Gregory] saying and what Mike Murphy is saying is that people want leadership, people want someone to show some guts here. Paul Ryan has shown considerable guts, but you're [Democratic Congressman Chris Van Hollen] correct that nobody on the Republican side is showing any courage on the tax front. And unless taxes are part of the mix, every grown-up knows it can't reach a solution.

ANDREW SORKIN, NEW YORK TIMES: But Ryan opened the window today to actually come to the middle. He wants another proposal. He wants a proposal from the Democrats, and I think if they can actually -- I think there is an opportunity to get there. So, I think you give Ryan credit for at least bringing something to the table and then when do the Democrats come --

EUGENE ROBINSON, WASHINGTON POST: Let me point out two things. Number one, Republicans will not talk about tax increases. Democrats talk about a lot of budget cuts. The question for Democrats is how deeply do you cut the budget. So, the second thing is, on Medicare, people don't want it to be a voucher program. They don't want the kind of change Paul Ryan wants. So, you can call that leadership, but if nobody wants to follow, it's not leadership. It’s not what people want.

Usual Liberal Crap

Submitted by zenman1661 on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 6:55pm.

Judging by how many times it has happened in the past, raising taxes seems to be not too hard and doesn't appear to take much courage. Now considering real spending cuts have never happened, that proves how much bravery it takes. The Republicans have finally got some guts to do it, the Democrats don't.

They Lack Courage To Do The Most Gutless Thing In The World

Submitted by Avitar on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 7:11pm.

Andrea Mitchell has no sense at all.
Six millennia of barbarian kings always allowing their followers with the weapons to go out and rob, pillage, regulate and tax the honest farmers and merchants to death. It took historic courage for America's founding fathers to make it illegal for the states to tax interstate commerce, to forbid in the Constitution the congress from handing out to titles and entitlements and to limit taxes proportional taxes.
Andrea Mitchell must be completely ignorant of history. There are always more Government employees who want to spend money than there is money and there are always more needy poor petitioning for relief until the people paying the taxes starve.

Some day, maybe some Sunday

Submitted by desert3030 on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 9:18pm.

One of these Sunday's we will have this real weird thing happening. NBC, CBS and ABC will start with there version of fair and balanced round tables with:
We controld both Houses or the majority for two years, why didn' t we do a budget for over 500 days?
Why didn't we just force immgration reform?
Why didn't we close GITMO?
Why did we let the President contiue the wars we said we were agaisnt, but engage in a third?
As Jack Webb used to say...justs the fact........ What a day that would be.

Submitted by jessieH on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 10:07pm.

The woman is an idiot. It takes courage to fight higher taxes. It only takes a majority to raise them. Just look how many times, the majority have done it, throughout history. Most times, it was Democrats.

Submitted by Time Will Tell on Sun, 05/22/2011 - 10:50pm.

It's about time that all of us conservatives face the fact that the majority of the media will never think the same way we do. So what we have to do is inform are friends and relatives who watch and hear this garbage see it for what it is.Only by informing people through websites like Newsbusters can we get the truth out. Talk to those people you love who happen not to think conservative, that America future is at stake and we need to get back to what made us great.

These liberal MSMers just

Submitted by Chris Norman on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 1:27am.

These liberal MSMers just can't it through their thick skulls that a basic tenet of conservatism is that tax hikes are harmful to the economy and therefore anathema to us. They also can't seem to understand that supporting tax hikes is political suicide for most GOP politicians and that repeating their parrot like mantra of "Republicans must accept the inevitability of tax increases" isn't going to change that. So, Ms. Mitchell, you may as well shut the hell up on this subject (on every subject would be even more desirable).

By the way, what has Andrea Mitchell been doing to her face and hair? She's beginning to look like just a blur on the screen.

Submitted by Andrew H. on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 3:28am.

Andrea--you have established your democratic credentials very well over the years.
We get it: Hate the working class, embrace the taker class. Hate the family values crowd, embrace those who don't care. Hate anyone who knows less government is better, embrace those who live off our taxes. Hate conservatives, love liberals.
We don't bother listening to you anymore--nothing more predictable than what the democratic spin will be on virtually any issue and you carry it forward like the rest.

Submitted by pbthinker on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 7:56am.

SHe's telling the party that put the plan out there they have no courage while the Democrats haven't even put forth a budget. Give me a break you liberals!!! Why doesn't our illustrious free press give the Democrats a hard time about no budget? It's their responsibility. Make them do it. Then we'll talk about courage.

She Really IS this stupid!!!

Submitted by kevinm13 on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 9:10am.

Andrea Mitchell has no concept of economics despite being married to former Fed Chair Alan Greenspan. She has her head up the butt of liberals so far she can see the fillings on their teeth.

The "courageous" thing to do is to fight tax increases and reduce spending. Make necessary cuts in wasteful spending and eliminate government programs that should have never existed like the Department of Energy, Department of Labor and the funding for NPR and PBS. Democrats have been anything but courageous in spending other people's money which is what they do every day.

Wrong on so many counts!

Submitted by Cappmann1962 on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 11:53am.

The republicans ARE indeed talking about tax increases - they clearly state that they WILL NOT RAISE TAXES. That counts as talking about tax increases. As for the dems talking about a "lot of budget cuts", what exactly are these cuts? I haven't heard much from the left. How about ENTITLEMENT REFORM? Anyone got the "courage" for that? That's the black hole where our money is disappearing. How about making able-bodied citizens actually WORK for their money instead of perpetuating generational welfare?

Finally, how's about all these loud mouths publicly posting their incomes and the amount of taxes they pay before they shill for tax increases. And, OBTW, what about the Obamessiah's promise not to raise taxes? I don't make near $200,000, but my paycheck is smaller than it was last year. How's THAT work?

If we raise taxes we might as well start learning how

Submitted by VanPastorMan on Mon, 05/23/2011 - 1:05pm.

to spell depression. The economy can't handle a tax hike. I am not sure Andrea has the smarts to figure this out. What a complete airhead, and they call Sarah Palin stupid?
Right now we are projected to spend 40% more than we are supposed to take in for the calendar year. What we need to do is cut the spending of the government 50%. This way we balance the budget and give a 10% tax cut, across the board to all workers. Yeah, this looks impossible, but we have to do it to save our country.
I am not a politician, but I bet I can come up with ways to completely cut whole departments of the federal government. If I can do this as a novice, then why can't the professional politicians do it?

Liberals are funny when they aren't in power.  But when they have power they become dangerous. Rush Limbaugh
