Thursday's NBC Nightly News led, yes led, with a lame attempt to advance the desperate Democratic spin about the “secret fortune” going into campaign ads leading to “a return to the days before Watergate, Wild West days,” a story anchor Brian Williams touted as containing “exclusive new information,” but which merely passed along stale and vague generalities suggesting some sort of vast right-wing conspiracy in efforts to dare exercise the same unfettered free speech rights practiced by NBC News.

“Tonight, we have exclusive new information about the enormous amount of money, a kind of secret fortune that has been flowing into congressional campaigns in these mid-term elections,” Williams ominously announced at the top of his newscast. Reporter Michael Isikoff, fresh from Newsweek, intoned:

In the last couple of weeks, Brian, money, special interest money has been pouring into a network of outside political groups that are really at really unprecedented levels. This is a network, the primary network is being run by Karl Rove....They are expecting to raise $250 million to flood the airwaves in these last few weeks of the election....And here's what's significant, Brian. Most of this money is coming from big fat cat donors, wealthy donors, and it's not being disclosed. Secret money pouring into American elections.

Isikoff continued: “We're seeing is a return to seven-figure donations. Million dollars or more donations, I've been told from Republican fundraising sources, as many as twenty million-dollar plus checks have come in from hedge fund moguls and other big business executives who are very upset with President Obama's policies.”

Williams claimed “everyone” talks “about getting money out of politics.” Isikoff then charged “what a lot of people see is as a return to the days before Watergate, Wild West days, no restrictions, secret money.”

On screen as Isikoff cited Karl Rove's nefarious “network,” logos for six groups: American Action Network, American Future Fund, America's Families First Action Fund, Crossroads GPS, Citizens for Strength and Security Action Fund and RevereAmerica.org.

Earlier:

October 5: “With Republican Groups Outspending Democratic Ones, CBS Upset by Speech from 'Outside Groups'”

October 8: “NBC Nightly News Airs Duplicitous Case Against Anti-Democratic Candidate Campaign Ads.”

From the Thursday, October 21 NBC Nightly News, transcript provided by the MRC's Brad Wilmouth:

BRIAN WILLIAMS, IN OPENING TEASER: On the broadcast tonight, money and politics and what's different this year. A hidden fortune being funneled into campaigns.

...

WILLIAMS: Good evening. We are just 12 days away now from what could be a game-changing election. And tonight, we have exclusive new information about the enormous amount of money, a kind of secret fortune that has been flowing into congressional campaigns in these mid-term elections. With the story tonight, with us here in our New York studios, our national investigative correspondent Michael Isikoff. Michael, first off, how much money are we talking about here?

MICHAEL ISIKOFF: Very large amounts. In the last couple of weeks, Brian, money, special interest money has been pouring into a network of outside political groups that are really at really unprecedented levels. This is a network, the primary network is being run by Karl Rove, President Bush's, former President Bush's political guru. They are expecting to raise $250 million to flood the airwaves in these last few weeks of the election. That's far more than anybody expected. And here's what's significant, Brian. Most of this money is coming from big fat cat donors, wealthy donors, and it's not being disclosed. Secret money pouring into American elections.

WILLIAMS: How is this able to happen? Why is this new?

ISIKOFF: Right. McCain-Feingold, you remember, that landmark campaign finance law that was supposed to curb the influence of special interest money, the Supreme Court earlier this year ruled that restrictions on political speech are a violation of the First Amendment. It opened the flood gates for a whole bunch of these non-profit groups with names that nobody has ever heard of, voters have no idea who they are, to collect money, collect money as much as they can from big donors. One of the really significant things we're seeing is a return to seven-figure donations. Million dollars or more donations, I've been told from Republican fund-raising sources, as many as twenty-million-dollar plus checks have come in from hedge fund moguls and other big business executives who are very upset with President Obama's policies.

WILLIAMS: And people who hear about this and upset with this, what's the remedy? Everyone likes to talk about getting money out of politics.

ISIKOFF: Right. Well, you know, it really, it's going to depend on how voters react to this. Are they going to be upset at seeing what a lot of people see is as a return to the days before Watergate, Wild West days, no restrictions, secret money. It's going to depend whether voters get upset and whether there's some political scandal that really triggers that.

WILLIAMS: Michael Isikoff with our lead story tonight. Michael, thanks, as always.

NBC News and Special Reports

Submitted by neutron on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 11:30pm.

As the libtards get depserate, they will escalate their vitriol, and no baseless attack will be too low not to hurl at the Reps who threaten to displace their beloved Dems from the throne. I expect to see stories (with “exclusive new information,” but no actual proof):

Republicans will use cattle prods on your house pets.

Republicans will send storm troopers into your home to steal your babies.

A secret new memo discovered in West Texas reveals that Republicans will force your daughters to either join a convent or a Utah polygamy cult. They will force your sons to join the military or a local militia. If your kids are gay, the Republicans will throw them in jail.

Republicans will fire all teachers and force everyone to homeschool their children.

Republicans will Fire all police and replace them with skinhead militias.

Republicans will outlaw a woman's right to choose who she dates, and after providing date-rape drugs to men, outlaw all abortions.

Well, maybe they won't go that far, but they'll come close. As was seen with the recent Levin / Beck and Palin lie on Politic, if the libtards need it, and it isn't a fact, they just make it up!

Submitted by neutron on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 1:33am.

Over at HillBuzz.org, folks are posting ground-truth reports from all over the USA. This came in the "OREGON GROUND REPORT" (10/21/2010)

"...I live in the 4th Congressional District which until this year was basically a shoe-in for the Democrats... (R) Art Robinson was within 6 points as of the last poll... (D) Peter Defazio... I can tell the Left is getting desperate because they are saying things like, “Robinson wants to put nuclear waste in the foundation of your homes, He wants to abolish public schools, yadda, yadda, yadda.”

See, I told you so! Next the (D) Defazio campaign will have video of (R) Robinson eating BBQ and claim he's a canibal, or something.

If they're secret donors ...

Submitted by KC Mulville on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 10:01pm.

How did Isikoff discover it?

The report claims that he was told this by Republican fund-raising sources, and that there are millions coming in. Exactly what the hell does that mean?

Come clean, Isikoff. If you want me to believe you, open your sources. Sauce for the goose.

Good point, KC.

Reminds me of that TV series "Untold Stories of the ER."

How can something that's on TV be "untold"?

I guess this is the template: it's Watergate all over again!!

NYT's Jill Abramson brought up the "Watergate" connection a few days ago too.

This is all they have.  The Democrats can't run on their record, they can't run AWAY from it fast enough.  So what do do when there's nowhere else to go?

Bring up Nixon and Watergate!!

Submitted by trak65 on Thu, 10/21/2010 - 10:16pm.

A fantastic example of left-wing media hyperbole.  It's shocking that a supposedly serious reporter can use terms like "big fat cat donors."  No sources named.  No specifics.  Not even an attempt to explain what bad things are being advocated.

It sounds like a cheesy campus radicals pamphlet rather than serious news.  The slimiest of smears and innuendo.

Meanwhile, we never hear "boo" about the funding for organizations that Soros supports, NPR, etc.

I almost broke the TV.

That was nothing more than a corporate sanctioned smear job.

The thing is though that no one is taking them serious anymore.

Especially after a segment like that.

To see Brian Williams act as if raising huge sums of unknown cash was some sort of crime against freedom was laughable.

It was hysterical and quite pathetic.   We got a good glimpse at how low Williams is prepared to go to tow the DNC/ White House talking points.

250 million?

Submitted by octavioj on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 12:28am.

Is that not the same amount the unions are spending? Has it not also been reported mostly everywhere the Democrats have more money in the banks than Republicans? This is getting silly already. Whenever they come up with one of these a new report appears that shows Democrats have more money. When will they learn? Now the fat cats, was it not reported broadly that in 2008 MOST of the fat cats supplied president Obama with large amounts of money? Did not president Obama get more money than Senator McCain from Wall Street? Did not he get more money than Senator McCain from Hollywood? Did not the Democrats get more money than the Republicans from most of the media corporations? And did not the unions give almost all of their political money to Democrats? Are these not FAT CATS? YES THEY ARE!

A graph NBC will never, ever use -- because it's simply too factual. And doesn't advance their agenda.

Many, many, studies have been

Submitted by jdhawk on Fri, 10/22/2010 - 9:03am.

Many, many, studies have been done about the amount, nature, and source of poltical funding of both the parties.  When the dust settles, it is the dimocrats who rely on "fat cats" for their funding.  While it is the Republicans that rely on common every day folks for the majority of their funding.

I am certainly not rich, but contribute on a recurring basis a modest amount to the RNC. Likewise, I also contribute to the North Carolina RC.  It isn't a lot of money at the end of the year, but I figure that if everyone did the same it would add up to a lot.  And, that is exactly what is happening.

The dimocrats are reeling from the Supreme Court decision that puts all sources of poltical funding on an even footing. Following the decision they attempted to float a bill to force corporate donors to reveal themselves by name.  They couldn't get their own caucus to muster enough votes to get it passed.

The Supreme Court ruling, in particular, takes away the power of the media because it nullified that part of the McCain Feingold bill that prohibited you and me from expressing our views of candidates inside of 60 days of a general election.
