A week after ABC anchor Dan Harris hailed how “Senator Ted Kennedy is using his own battle against brain cancer to make an emotional pitch for health care reform. Writing in Newsweek, Kennedy called it 'the cause of my life,'” Sunday's World News devoted a full story to Kennedy's cause as Harris' tease framed Kennedy's big government agenda in the most-benign light: “In the game. An ailing Ted Kennedy, now working from his sick bed to achieve his life-long goal of health care for everyone.”
He introduced the subsequent story: “Behind the scenes, Senator Ted Kennedy, a man who has called this his life's work, is playing a surprisingly large role, despite his brain tumor.” Reporter John Hendren fretted: “Senator Edward Kennedy is the missing man in the battle for health care reform. On Capitol Hill, nearly everyone agrees things would be different if the liberal lion were here.”
Hendren went back to March to show a clip of President Obama saluting Kennedy -- “To Sir Edward Kennedy. That's the kind of greeting a knight deserves. It is thrilling to see you here, Teddy” -- before effusing over how “in his absence, his colleagues invoke his name, hoping also to borrow his legislative prowess.” Nonetheless, Hendren concluded, passing Obama's health agenda has been “made harder by the absence of its top advocate on Capitol Hill.” As if that's a bad thing.
From the Sunday, July 26 World News on ABC:
DAN HARRIS: In Washington today a key Democrat conceded that they will need Republican help to push President Obama's health care overhaul plan through the United States Senate. Right now, that bill is stalled. Behind the scenes, Senator Ted Kennedy, a man who has called this his life's work, is playing a surprisingly large role, despite his brain tumor. Here's John Hendren.JOHN HENDREN: Senator Edward Kennedy is the missing man in the battle for health care reform. On Capitol Hill, nearly everyone agrees things would be different if the liberal lion were here.
SENATOR ORRIN HATCH: He's the only person I know that can corral them and get them to do what's right. He's willing to come to the center. He's willing to make it a true bi-partisan bill.
HENDREN: As he stays home in Massachusetts for treatment of a brain tumor, and an occasional sail, colleagues say Kennedy is closely monitoring the health care debate on C-SPAN and e-mail. But his influence is said to be limited by his increasing difficulty communicating. Today, the health care reform he calls "the cause of my life," is stalled. And with some Democrats wavering in their support, the Senate is nearly certain to miss President Obama's deadline of passing it by August.
SENATOR KENT CONRAD, ON ABC'S THIS WEEK: Look, there are not the votes for Democrats to do this just on our side of the aisle.
HENDREN: On Kennedy's rare returns to Washington, even the President takes notice.
PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, MARCH 5: To sir Edward Kennedy. That's the kind of greeting a knight deserves. It is thrilling to see you here, Teddy.
HENDREN: In his absence, his colleagues invoke his name, hoping also to borrow his legislative prowess.
SENATOR CHRIS DODD, ON SENATE FLOR: Senator Ted Kennedy, who is wrestling with his own health care crisis at this hour and has been unable to be with us.
SENATOR JACK REED, ON SENATE FLOOR: Senator Kennedy's presences was palpable.
HENDREN: When health care reform comes to a vote, friends say, if Kennedy has the strength, nothing will stop him from returning to the Capitol.
HATCH: If they can get a bill put together, he'd be one of those who would want to be there.
HENDREN: Kennedy has come back to vote several times since his diagnosis. But it's been three months since the last return of the Senator from Massachusetts. The President has set a new deadline. He now want to have health care reform on his desk so he can sign it into law by the end of the year. But that's still a job made harder by the absence of its top advocate on Capitol Hill. Dan?
HARRIS: John Hendren on Capitol Hill tonight.

Excuse me, wouldn't Teddy K
July 27, 2009 - 08:23 ET by BDExcuse me, wouldn't Teddy K already be dead if the policies he sought were actually implemented?
Then how the hell can he be the poster child for this?
No he wouldn't. You don't
July 27, 2009 - 08:29 ET by motherbeltNo he wouldn't.
You don't think the Liberal Lion of the Senate would be subjected to the same standards as the hoi polloi, do you?

HERE IS THE PLAN THAT WON'T CHANGE!
July 27, 2009 - 12:51 ET by reelman46HERE IS THE H-PLAN CONGRESS WON’T CHANGE
Ever wonder why people spend a million to get a job paying under $175k? Our arrogant congressional royalty…
you know, the one that raises its own pay in a severe recession and
lusts only for 40 years in the D.C. power bubble, that royalty.
Ever realized their health care coverage WE pay for with taxes?
According to the May 2009 CR…
this is what they have in their FEDERAL Employees Health Benefits Program:
1…No annual or lifetime limits for major services
2…$300 deductible per person and $600 per family
3…Limited 5k a year they pay with preferred providers (which includes most deductibles, co-insurance and co-pays)
Covered Services are:
1…In and out-patient care, visits, surgery and mental health care
2…Prescriptions and diagnostic tests
3…Preventative care including routine shots
4…Chem and radiation therapy
5…Family Planning and organ-tissue transplants
6…Durable med equip and artificial limbs
7…Physical, occupational and speech therapy
They pay $152 a MONTH each or $357 a FAMILY.
Okay, take out your family policy and compare.
The folks that “understand” your family struggles have this program.
The feds are special, you and your family are not.
Ask yourself why we can’t have the same coverage.
P.S. The hundreds of thousands of federal gov-meant employees will NOT be included in any new bill either!
The secular socialist Party voted down an amendment to include these groups in any new Plan….

Oh, yes, by all
July 27, 2009 - 08:27 ET by motherbeltOh, yes, by all means....because the "Liberal Lion" is ill (and believe me, I wish illness on no one) let us, in his honor, screw up the health care system for the entire country.
The Missing Man
July 27, 2009 - 08:29 ET by Galvanic“Senator Edward Kennedy is the missing man in the battle for health care reform. . . . "
How ironic. He was also the missing man at the attempted rescue of Mary Jo Kopechnie.

We'd be driving off the health care reform 'bridge' now that we've gotten to it.

I love "The BATTLE for Healthcare Reform"
July 27, 2009 - 08:33 ET by SickofLibsI love "The BATTLE for Healthcare Reform", like this is a crusade against the evil Republicans who want everyone to just go and die.
The other night, I watched HBO's documentary "Teddy: In His Own Words." In a speech on healthcare around '74, he said [paraphrased] "if any knows about death and losing a loved one, it's the Kennedys."
I thought to myself, yeah, there's another family who also knows about death that you'll never mention...

July 27, 2009 - 08:51 ET by TexndocListening to Bill Bennett's show this morning I believe it was during a news segment on Ted Kennedy I had to listen to Republican Orrin Hatch (!!!) say that "If Teddy were up to his full capacity, this Health Care Bill would be sailing through."
We don't need to hear that! If that Senate good old boy system destroys our healthcare for "Teddy" 'cause he's such a "great guy" every Republican voting for it should be horsewhipped, then thrown out of office.
(Hey, I didn't have to listen to the radio - I just had to fully read the transcript above. There it is!)

Re Teddy
July 27, 2009 - 09:47 ET by slickwillie2001It's not necessarily true that under Obamacare, Teddy would be dead. The criteria that the democratics are putting together that will drive rationing includes their notions of 'community value'. That means that besides age, one of the considerations in deciding what is available to a patient will be their position in the community, what they do for a living, whether they are a burden on the community or a benefit. If someone is already being cared for, like an autistic child, or a senior with Alzheimers, they would be cut off. And who is of more value to the community than a democratic Senior Senator?
All these principles are described in books written by those that are advising the democratics on healthcare rationing, including Tom Daschle's book.
Hellcare Reformers
July 27, 2009 - 20:05 ET by stratman"Value" is straight out of the Zeke Emmanuel playbook on healthcare rationing.
Emmanuel is A-OK with denying care to dementia patients and the handicapped. Why? Because they are not productive, at least not productive enough. There is no arguing his view from a cold calculating point of view - the demented and handicapped produce less for society in goods and services than "normal" individuals. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few. But is that how we want to exist as a species? Passionate inhumanity?
The 'Healthers' (Truthers for Healthcare Reform) can shroud it in any manner or form of metaphor or ginned-up, new age gilded word(s), but it is still chillingly inhumane, immoral, unethical, and just plain sociopathic at its core.
Tyrranical despots adopt eugenics into their belief systems. Once integrated, dehumanization takes over and it becomes easier to manipulate and murder people.
Before things get too far afield, I'd rather we just vote down their bills and remove them from office via peaceful, orderly elections.
Shameful Teddy
July 27, 2009 - 10:02 ET by Ozark_SunshineAnd Mary Jo Kopeckne would still be alive if Teddy wasn't there. I'm perfectly comfortable
July 27, 2009 - 13:08 ET by fitzfongI'm perfectly comfortable tying Ted Kennedy into the "health" "care" bill. After all, his life is the perfect embodiment of what the Democrat plan is...driving our healthcare system into the lake and leaving our health locked in the car at the bottom of that lake while he swims his health to the safety of a private system provided by those of us he's left for dead...all with the media acting as Joe Gargan to spin that he's done it for our benefit.

If we ran health care the way Kennedy wants
July 27, 2009 - 14:08 ET by Lord ErondThat stupid SOB would still be waiting for surgery for his brain tumor.
Kennedy saw the top neurosurgeon at Duke. I think he got in, and had his surgery all in the span of 1-2 weeks.
It takes the average patient 6 months to see this doctor.

Health Care Plans
July 28, 2009 - 00:30 ET by ptsonI think it is only fitting that the private Congressional Health Care Plan should be named after Teddy Kennedy. The TEDDY KENNEDY PLAN, a symbol of self-indulgence and total disregard for the public. The other plan, the PUBLIC plan is something else, however. I suggest that the public plan be named the MARYJO KOPECHNE HEALTH CARE SYSTEM. This will properly memoralize a lifetime of Teddy's work. Surely the public WILL NOT receive the same benefits as Congress but this Kennedy plan will provide the same level of care given to Maryjo by Teddy, with similar results. For those who wait eagerly for passage of the public plan, (as Maryjo probably waited) my advice based on past history is DON'T HOLD YOUR BREATH!
