President Obama's experience last year earning fawning press coverage as a “genius” on race relations lulled him into assuming “he can say anything on race and is so smart that he will be untouchable,” columnist Charles Krauthammer postulated Friday night on FNC in suggesting an explanation for why Obama so misunderstand how his remarks on Henry Louis Gates would ensnare him in controversy. Krauthammer opined: “A lot of the Obama presidency is a contest between his intelligence and his arrogance” and he thought “he can say anything on race and is so smart that he will be untouchable.”
One reason for that, Krauthammer contended, is that after he “gave the famous speech in Philadelphia” on race in March of 2008, in which “he did not renounce Jeremiah Wright” as “he blamed everybody for racism -- black, white and grandmother, except himself,” he nonetheless “was hailed by a supine press as the second coming of Lincoln at Cooper Union. So after, that you think you can say anything on race and be hailed as a genius.”
Indeed, hours after Obama's Tuesday, March 18, 2008 address, MSNBC's Chris Matthews, NewsBusters recounted, praised it as “worthy of Abraham Lincoln” and also claimed it bypassed Martin Luther King Jr.'s “I Have a Dream” address as the “best speech ever given on race in this country.”
Matthews declared:
I think this is the kind of speech I think first graders should see, people in the last year of college should see before they go out in the world. This should be, to me, an American tract. Something that you just check in with, now and then, like reading Great Gatsby and Huckleberry Finn.A giddy Matthews opened his show: “A divide as American as the Grand Canyon, a speech worthy of Abraham Lincoln. Let's play Hardball!”
Another NewsBusters item, “'Extraordinary' Speech 'Gift' for 'Confronting Race' with 'Honesty,'” provided highlights of the media's subservience:
The ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts on Tuesday framed coverage of Barack Obama's speech, in reaction to the furor over the racist, paranoid and America-hating remarks of his long-time pastor, not by focusing on what it says about Obama's true views and judgment but by admiring his success in "confronting" the issue of "race in America" in an "extraordinary" speech. Indeed, both ABC and CBS displayed "Race in America" on screen as the theme to their coverage, thus advancing Obama's quest to paint himself as a candidate dedicated to addressing a serious subject, not explain his ties to racially-tinged hate speech. NBC went simply with "The Speech" as Brian Williams described it as "a speech about race."The media's excitement continued the next morning:In short, the approach of the networks was as toward a friend in trouble and they wanted to help him put the unpleasantness behind him by focusing on his noble cause. "Barack Obama addresses the controversial comments of his pastor, condemning the words but not the man," CBS's Katie Couric teased before heralding: "And he calls on all Americans to work for a more perfect union." On ABC, Charles Gibson announced: "Barack Obama delivers a major speech confronting the race issue head on, and says it's time for America to do the same." Reporting "Obama challenged Americans to confront the country's racial divide," Gibson hailed "an extraordinary speech."
NBC's Lee Cowan admired how "in the City of Brotherly Love, Barack Obama gave the most expansive and most intensely personal speech on race he's ever given," adding it reflected "honesty that struck his rival Hillary Clinton." On NBC, Washington Post editorial writer Jonathan Capehart asserted "it was a very important speech for the nation. It was very blunt, very honest" and so "a very important gift the Senator has given the country."
- ABC's GMA Lauds 'Historic' and 'Remarkable' Obama SpeechKrauthammer, during the panel segment on the Friday, July 24 Special Report with Bret Baier on FNC:On Wednesday's Good Morning America, various hosts and reporters could barely restrain their glee and admiration for Senator Barack Obama's Tuesday speech about race and the incendiary comments of his pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright. Co-host Robin Roberts hyperbolically claimed that "some" believe "his speech was not only important for his campaign but also for the future of the country." In a tease for the program, she put the onus on America and asserted, "Barack Obama challenges voters and the country..."- CBS's Rodriguez: Obama's Speech 'A Defining Cultural Moment'
Fellow co-host Chris Cuomo set up an "exclusive" interview with the presidential candidate by labeling the speech "historic." Nightline co-host Terry Moran, who talked to Obama, prefaced his segment by bubbling: "Well, as you know, one of the hardest things to do in American politics, in American society, is to talk honestly about race. And it's clear that's what Barack Obama was trying to do in that remarkable speech."Wednesday's CBS Early Show devoted four segments to Obama's speech on race and the Jeremiah Wright controversy and that coverage began with a proclamation by co-host Maggie Rodriguez: "It's being called a defining cultural moment in America. Barack Obama speaks about America's racial stalemate, a moving moment, a political risk." Rodriguez went on to tease upcoming coverage of the speech by again emphasizing its "historic" nature: "It was without question a defining moment in American political history. But for an African-American presidential candidate who'd played down race in his campaign, this was a huge gamble politically."
It seems, to me, that a lot of the Obama presidency is a contest between his intelligence and his arrogance, and I think he thought, when he was asked that question Wednesday night, that he can say anything on race and is so smart that he will be untouchable.
And one reason is that he gave the famous speech in Philadelphia, the race speech, during the campaign, which, in fact, he did not renounce Jeremiah Wright, he blamed everybody for racism -- black, white and grandmother, except himself -- and was hailed by a supine press as the second coming of Lincoln at Cooper Union. So after, that you think you can say anything on race and be hailed as a genius. Well, he now understands that you can't get away with that forever, and he got really caught on this one.

I'd have said Obama was hoist upon his own petard (of arrogance).
Either way....it's a great point, and one which gives me much pleasure.
I hope he fails, too.
How's this for arrogance?
July 26, 2009 - 06:44 ET by motherbeltWhile surfing I came upon an article by Abigail Thernstrom at NRO.
It included this quote from then-candidate Barack Obama, in an NPR interview:
In the history of African-American politics in this country, there
has always been some tension between speaking in universal terms and
speaking in very race-specific terms about the plight of the
African-American community. By virtue of my background, you know, I am more likely to speak in
universal terms.” (emphasis mine)
So after bragging that his is a more "universal" view, his gut reaction to the arrest was that of a black man with racial grievances.

More Layoffs at Newsweek
July 27, 2009 - 00:56 ET by farstar99Speaking of pleasure, I can report that Newsweek has laid off a sizable chunk of its management staff, possibly as much as twenty percent.
The five-year plan for the new format isn't working out too well, especially since the cash bank that was supposed to support it is nearly gone.
So more layoffs are expected in the near future. I guess they'll be asking for a bailout any month now.

Is Obama Racist?
July 25, 2009 - 21:16 ET by GPSWas it a Fox News reporter who asked the trick question on Gates?
Gloria Borger on CNN said Obama may have been tired.
I think the comments by Obama exposed him as a racist. Until now he'd been able to carefully prevent everyone from seeing he's racist. He showed prejudice against a white man in pre-judging the police officer without reading the police report or speaking with him.
The irony of the press conference comments is that he spent most of the time talking down to the reporters. He was asked relatively few questions; he gave long-winded answers that wasted most of the time. It was more like a lecture than a press conference.
Obama's failure to apologize since he "acted stupidly" doesn't indicate he "gets it." Arrogance is a heavy weight around his neck.

July 26, 2009 - 07:08 ET by ThisnThatHere's the situation, as I see it:
Frankly, I don't think Obama was "lulled" by the press into anything. I think Obama is like Col Jacobs in the movie "For a few good men". He wants to tell us we're no good. He needs to put his boot on the throats of every decent citizen of America. Obama, simply, is a tyrant.

Arrogant
July 25, 2009 - 23:04 ET by sms5217This Gates-a-thon exemplifies so clearly the perverted and sinister view of race by Obama and his amen corner in the media.
First of all, that Philadelphia speech after the Wright debacle was a terrible speech. He took no responsibility for having known or been associated with the heinous pastor, and his MSM admirers actively worked like paid spin-meisters to disseminate to the naive and gullible US public that the speech was somehow grand. Rubbish.
Second, Dr. K nails the point of Obama getting careless due to his innate arrogance and his expectation that any and all missteps will be cleared and cleansed by his MSM admirers. His arrogance is due to his life experience of everyone under the sun showing deference, treating him like some king, and rising through the modern affirmative action conga line straight thru to the presidency. In short, Obama has the arrogance of the typical athlete in America who has been coddled and spoiled since youth. He EXPECTS everyone to bow down and listen to his words like they were canonical treatises.
You can already see how the MSM is doing damage control for him this weekend. Those that are gleefully expecting permanent damage for BHO should make note of the fact that this country is now a center-left country, has socialist/statist tendencies in the young, minorities and intellectuals, and that Republicans are still without a leader or a voice.
BHO is not to be underestimated by any means. His MSM friends will protect him at all costs from any and all goofs and bad choices.

Tribalism
July 25, 2009 - 23:36 ET by DustBunny01Charles Krauthammer is dead wrong on this issue.
This is a case of tribalism, pure and simple. A member of President Obama's tribe of minority intellectual/professor types was challenged by a white police officer. The President simply stuck by his tribe and condemned the "enemy" of his tribe. President Obama simply conducted a fast racial profile with what few facts he had and then spoke his piece.
Everyone on the Dem side of the equation is now trying to either cover this up or walk the dog back without having to admit their error and thus apologise. Professor Gates has publically stated that the officer is a liar and a racist and beyond his failure to demand the release of the tapes to prove his allegations, his friends and allies are working to keep those tapes from being released.
This matter will not be resolved until the tapes are released.
The real reason Obama spoke so stupidly
July 25, 2009 - 23:37 ET by JohnKIf you analyze Obama's worldwiew, his economic concepts, his social concepts, and his understanding of what it means to be President of the United States, you may, like me, come to the conclusion that he is essentially a college sophomore.
Re Gates's 'Charity'
July 26, 2009 - 00:21 ET by slickwillie2001The blog Riehl World View points out that our friend Henry Gates runs a charity that appears to take in far more money than it disburses:
A Gatesgate at Henry Gates' "Bogus" Charity?: http://www.riehlworldview.com
"Henry Louis Gates, Jr controls a tax-exempt, non-profit charity, Inkwell Foundation, Inc, that managed to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars in direct support in one year, yet only gave out $27,500 in grants, the bulk of which went to Gates' employees and Harvard colleagues. Also, as recently as September 2008, the Boston Globe reported that Gates' charity was not in compliance with the law for failing to register the proper paperwork, despite the charity existing since 2005."
Will this be reported in the liberal media? Do democratics, especially members of the black liberal elite, have to follow the laws that the rest of us do?
Gates & Obama on Marthas Vineyard together?
July 26, 2009 - 08:02 ET by ThisnThatSo, Gates rents a house on Marthas Vineyard every year in the summer? And Obama is going to be vacationing on Marthas Vineyard this summer? Re Martha's Vineyard
July 26, 2009 - 08:29 ET by slickwillie2001This article seems to indicate that he owns the house on Martha's Vineyard:
[q] I spend every July and August in my house near Oak Bluffs. I love bicycling, and because of a hip replacement I had a couple of years ago, I had a 24-speed tricycle made by hand in Germany. Every day I write in the morning, then ride eight miles from my house to South Beach. I get off, look at the ocean, then get back on and ride home. My tricycle has a bell that sounds like the Good Humor man, and I ring it when I pass people. Everybody waves and says, 'There goes that Henry Louis Gates Jr.!' [endq] (From this article)
Someone would have to check the property records to be certain. His house at Cambridge seems to be owned by Harvard, and is thus tax exempt. I hope Gates is paying income tax on the imputed value of that rent and mortgage-free residence.
These areas of Martha's Vineyard are often referred to as 'traditionally places for blacks to vacation'. Could a Republican President get away with going to a place referred to as a place where whites go to vacation? Is this a racist enclave?

July 26, 2009 - 08:00 ET by okiehawk44The knee-jerk reaction to Gates reminds me of the OJ Simpson verdict.
Gates is a well postitioned and paid black, living in a town with a black mayor, in a state with a black governor and in a nation with a black president, and yet he frames himself as a victim of his race.
The worst mistake ever made in America was black slavery. The unintended consequences continue to multiply to the detriment of all Americans of all races.
People the world over of all races have been enslaved, but most of the descendants of those enslaved in America just can't seem to move to new ground as if always being a victim is preferable to any other status. Is it the fault of others? No one in any other part of the world cares and soon no one in America will either.

Dunphy on Gates
July 26, 2009 - 09:03 ET by slickwillie2001Columnist/Cop Jack Dunphy on the Gates incident:
" ... In fact, many police officers faced with the identical facts would likely have ordered Henry Gates out of the home at gunpoint.
Sgt. Crowley did not go so far as that (imagine the furor if he had), but he exercised a measure of caution by following Gates into the home as Gates retrieved his identification. Gates insists Crowley needed a warrant to enter the home but he is mistaken, as even the most liberal judge would find that Crowley was faced with sufficiently exigent circumstances, viz. a possible burglar who may have attempted to arm himself or flee, to justify a warrantless entry."
Sgt. Crowley's Nightmare Is All Too Real: http://pajamasmedia.com
As I wrote last night, there's a million police officers in our country that can describe typical handling of a 911 call for 'burglary in process'. If anything, it appears Crowley was a little too casual in his approach.

July 26, 2009 - 09:30 ET by SnappyThis is a classic example of Obamas' ignorance and lack of understanding about the office he was elected to. When he expressed surprise that his comments created such a firestorm it all became clear for me.
He still does not understand that he was elected leader of the free world, the last superpower. He has no clue what it means to be President, and that has been abundantly clear by his personal attacks on talk radio personalities, offhand remarks about celebraties weight issues and casual manner and dress while in public. So its no wonder he will blindly wade into local issues with no knowledge of events and then proclaim surprise when his comments are heard around the world.
