With Sarah Palin condemning David Letterman's joke about her daughter, a look back at some of Letterman's previous hostility toward Palin after she emerged as the GOP's VP nominee -- as documented, with video, in previous NewsBusters posts.
Last September, Letterman sarcastically complained that if a President McCain “drops dead...don't you want your President to have had the presence of mind to have chatted to her teenaged kids for five minutes about birth control?” He soon sneered: “They don't sell Trojans in Alaska? Come on.” In October, without recognizing any irony given Barack Obama's inexperience, Letterman wondered if the nation can risk “a beginner in the passenger seat” and, in a sexist cheap shot, imitated Palin adjusting her hair during a 9/11 crisis as he impersonated her voice: “How's my hair?”
On Monday's show, Letterman's monologue included: “One awkward moment for Sarah Palin at the Yankee game, during the seventh inning her daughter was knocked-up by Alex Rodriguez.”
Laughter incited by sexually-perverted comments made by a 62-year-old male celebrity aimed at a 14-year-old girl is not only disgusting, but it reminds us some Hollywood/NY entertainers have a long way to go in understanding what the rest of America understands -- that acceptance of inappropriate sexual comments about an underage girl, who could be anyone's daughter, contributes to the atrociously high rate of sexual exploitation of minors by older men who use and abuse others. The 14-year-old Willow accompanied Palin to the game, but the Late Show says the joke was about 18-year-old Bristol who has given birth.
Monday's Late Show also featured the “Top Ten Highlights of Sarah Palin's Trip to New York” with this entry: “Bought makeup from Bloomingdale's to update her 'slutty flight attendant' look.”(In March, he insulted “this bonehead Rush Limbaugh,” ridiculing how Limbaugh's attire at CPAC made him look “like an Eastern European gangster.” Focusing on Limbaugh's physical appearance, he recited how Limbaugh's “got the black jacket on, the black silk shirt and it's unbuttoned, like, 'oh yeah, when you think Rush Limbaugh, you think ooh let's see a little flesh.'”)
My September 4 NewsBusters item, “'Dr. Phil' Chastises Letterman's Deriding of Palin's Parenting,” reported:
Guest “Dr. Phil” on Wednesday [September 3] night chastised David Letterman's misunderstanding of teenage sexual behavior and parental influence after Letterman sarcastically complained that if a President McCain “drops dead...don't you want your President to have had the presence of mind to have chatted to her teenaged kids for five minutes about birth control?” (Letterman delivered the same belittling joke the night before too.) Referring to Letterman's almost five-year-old son, daytime TV host Phil McGraw, aka “Dr. Phil,” informed Letterman: “If you are under the misapprehension that when Harry is 17 that you are going to have even a remote influence on what he decides in the back seat of a Chevy on a Saturday night -- I don't think old Dave's going to be popping in his mind at that point. It's not a 15-minute conversation. It's a dialogue that you need to have starting when he's about eight or nine.”An October 4 NewsBusters post, “Letterman Upset Palin in 'Passenger Seat,' Mocks 'How's My Hair?'” recounted:
Undeterred from his contempt for Sarah Palin, Letterman asked: “Then why didn't they have the dialogue?” McGraw suggested: “Maybe they did. But when children get that age, at 17 -- see, here's the thing. The body's grown but the brain is not.” Letterman soon sneered: “They don't sell Trojans in Alaska? Come on,” prompting McGraw to point out: “Wasn't Barack's mother like 18 when he was born?” Indeed she was.
Perfectly encapsulating the coastal left's blind derision of Sarah Palin as an inexperienced “beginner” and thus unqualified, when the very same smart aleck cheap shots about her could be directed at the man with whom they have fallen in love, Barack Obama, David Letterman on Friday night [October 3] asked guest Brian Williams if the nation can risk “a beginner in the passenger seat” (what about in the driver's seat?) and, in a sexist cheap shot, imitated Palin adjusting her hair during a 9/11 crisis as he impersonated her voice: “How's my hair?” That led an uncomfortable Williams to lean back and sigh, prompting Letterman to acknowledge “that's unfair. I'm sorry.”The March 3 NewsBusters post, “Letterman: 'Bonehead' Limbaugh Looks Like a 'Gangster,'” relayed:
On Monday's [March 2] Late Show, host David Letterman asked guest Katie Couric about “this bonehead Rush Limbaugh,” prompting Couric to plead: “Dave, don't do this to me, please! Don't do this to me.” But Letterman was just getting rolling with insults as he asserted Limbaugh's attire on Saturday at CPAC made him look “like an Eastern European gangster.” Focusing on Limbaugh's physical appearance, Letterman recited how Limbaugh's “got the black jacket on, the black silk shirt and it's unbuttoned, like, 'oh yeah, when you think Rush Limbaugh, you think ooh let's see a little flesh.'”

June 12, 2009 - 00:26 ET by Cool ArrowAt least here in my neck of the woods, tonight's Letterman was a rerun of last nights show.
Now, I'm not going to jump to any conclusions like maybe CBS taking offense at a scripted joke, that somebody should have realized was aimed directly at the heart of a 14-yr old girl.
I say that because Letterman definitely aimed his malicious vehicle at one of Palin's daughters, and now his defense is that he ran over the wrong one.
I know some people believe the best tack is to avoid this storm, because it allegedly brings up questions about Sarah Palin's fitness as a parent.
Personally, I'm glad Sarah isn't listening to that kind of chickensh*t advice.

Drawing the short straw
June 12, 2009 - 07:26 ET by ThisnThatWow, that musta hurt! Wonder who drew the short straw that had to write the condemnation?
However, the last sentence on their website is very, very telling. "NOW hopes that all the conservatives who are fired up about sexism in the media lately will join us in calling out sexism when it is directed at women who aren't professed conservatives."
Here's what it tells me. (1) There are no conservatives in NOW. None. Nada. (2) NOW engages in their own form of very blatent discrimination. They are essentially saying that all the criticism directed at Letterman comes only from conservatives. Does NOW not believe that Letterman's anti-woman comments deserve an equal dose of criticism from liberals? Apparantly not. and (3) The only reason NOW came out with this statement was because of the obvious hypocracy being directed at them as a result of their silence. NOW should have been first to criticize. Instead, they are last (well, CBS still hasn't critizized, along with the rest of the MSM, but that's another story). So the only way NOW was going to criticize is to also throw invective at their arch-enemy, the CONSERVATIVES.
NOW is pathetic and very, very transparent.

Uh Dave, they sell Trojans in NYC too you hypocrite.
June 12, 2009 - 07:16 ET by Bighead227Didn't Dave fater an out of wedlock child? What a moron.
This larger point is that David Letterman and CBS are cowards. Letterman would never joke about Sarah Palin being a slut or Willow Palin being raped in front of Sarah's husband and fourteen-year-old Willow's father, Todd Palin. Todd Palin would mop the floor with him and put him out of his creepy misery. He would also give CBS a shot at some decent late night ratings. But I digress.
This is exactly what is wrong with the wacko loony left. They think these jokes are okay, because their jokes. See Jon Stewart or Bill Maher. But if someone made a joke about the much less than attractive woman Letterman married being a slut or his child getting raped by a pro athlete, there would be outrage. And rightly so. Only liberals can get away with this sort of vitriol and have it excused as humor. Ask Carrie Prejean.
Will CBS fire him as they should? No. You see Letterman is fortunate enough to work at a network where being a left wing nut is enough. If he worked for any network where ratings mattered he'd have been gone long ago. Katie Couric has the lowest ratings in the history of ratings. Literally. Enough said.

Good Point by Dr Phil
June 12, 2009 - 07:55 ET by EddieWalkerDr Phil really nailed it when he said “Wasn't Barack's mother like 18 when he was born?”
I realize there is a double standard, but everything they say about the Palins is true about Dear Leader and his Mom. Her birthday is November 29th and he was born just over 8 months after she turned 18. If it was a full 9 month pregnancy, she would have been 17 when she got pregnant. This would also mean that his dad is guilty of statutory rape if this happened in the US. Of course, without a birth certificate and the only witness's to his birth saying that he was born in Kenya, this might be totally legal in Dear Leaders birth country.

Sexism OK, Racism Not OK - The Confusing World of Liberals
June 12, 2009 - 08:49 ET by reasonsjesterThe politics of identity is killing this country. The problem is not conservatives, it is liberals. The liberals' divide and conquer strategy has paid dividends, but their hypocrisy is starting to show.
The Letterman joke is the latest example that the left instrumentally wields sexism against their enemies, but do not apply the same rules to themselves. The double standard of the left is transparent; thus the hasty retorts from liberals at conservative protestation that we all need "to grow up" and move past what is argued to be a comedian's indiscretion. If Michelle Obama and her daughters were attacked in the same manner as Sarah Palin and her daughter, the left would not be accepting conservatives' advice to "grow up" and "move on."
The left is ultimately unable to live according to their own rules, and this is by design. They know they cannot live by them, and they don't even try. Instead, they use the Alinsky tactic of demanding others live by impossible rules and then make them feel guilty if and when they fail. Liberals brandish political correctness against conservatives routinely, and absolve themselves when it comes to making jokes about whites, women, blacks and Latinos if they happen to be conservative. Liberals can also be quite vicious when joking about gays and Jews, regardless of their ideological affiliation.
The accumulation of millions of petty jabs taken at conservatives, such as Letterman's, and small but accepted distortions of the truth by liberals is slowly bringing this country toward "crisis." Crisis promotes the demand for control; this is a prime mover behind
the media's incessant pitting of one identity group against another. Fostering a "crisis" was obviously not the goal behind the joke Letterman made of Palin (stoking fading ratings was), but such divisive angry attacks taken at conservatives' expense have become such standard practice on the left that liberals may not even be aware that they are furthering "the cause."
Jokes by "comedians" like David Letterman, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are nestled in a cocoon of systematic and widespread left-biased news coverage, so they appear to many to be "mainstream" and acceptable. Every "newsworthy" event, such as the recent shooting at the Holocaust museum, is portrayed as committed by a"right-wing extremist." No mention that the shooter was an anti-Semite by the mainstream media in their headlines and leads; instead he was a "racist." This narrative plays to the advantage of Obama, so he can again claim victimization. Other victims, such as the military recruiter who was shot by a Muslim extremist, is forgotten about by the media nearly as soon as the story breaks.
David Letterman's jokes of Sarah Palin would also be soon forgotten if outlets like Fox News did not press the issue. Fighting over such seemingly small points can pay off if conservatives display tenacity when liberals feign to give up on a "small" issue. The National Organization of Women even noticed the degrading nature of Letterman's jokes and has condemned them. Moral consistency for both conservatives and liberals would be some form of progress.
The hypocrisy that the left displays when they play their mind games with conservatives must not go unchallenged; and conservatives must not be silenced by the predictable ridicule they will provoke from liberals when they call their bluff.
