Highlights from ABC's New Show that Mocks Left-Wing, PC, Environmental Family

'The Goode Family,' a new half-hour animated comedy show which spoofs the politically-correct and environmental do-good thinking of a liberal family which considers its lifestyle superior to “abstinence people” who “wear flag pins,” debuted this past Wednesday night on ABC. The opening scene showed a “Support Our Troops...And Their Opponents” bumper sticker on the family's hybrid.

When the 16-year-old son who the parents adopted from Africa and presumed he'd be black, but to their surprise was a white South African, wants to start driving, the father cautions: “With greater emissions, comes greater responsibility.” In another scene, the mother declares “nothing brings a mother and daughter closer together than shopping at a high-end, organic grocery store.” And inside the store an intercom announcement alerts shoppers: “Check out the big board to see how you can limit the impact of your existence.”

I won't give away all that's in the accompanying video in which I cobbled together a little under three minutes of what I thought were the funnier and most-damning parodies of liberal thinking .

My May 25 NewsBusters post, “New Animated Series on ABC to Lampoon Environmentalists,” quoted a Wall Street Journal story:
The new animated television series ‘The Goode Family’ is a send-up of a clan of environmentalists who live by the words “What would Al Gore do?” Gerald and Helen Goode want nothing more than to minimize their carbon footprint. They feed their dog, Che, only veggies (much to the pet's dismay) and Mr. Goode dutifully separates sheets of toilet paper when his wife accidentally buys two-ply. And, of course, the family drives a hybrid.
I then noted:
The series, from Mike Judge who created Beavis and Butt-Head for MTV and King of the Hill for Fox, will debut Wednesday night at 9 PM EDT/PDT, 8 PM CDT/MDT. The May 22 Journal article, “Making a Mockery of Being Green -- The creator of ‘Beavis and Butt-Head' and ‘King of the Hill' has a new target: environmentalists,” observed: “Much as Mr. Judge's series King of the Hill finds humor in the dramas of a working-class Texas family, Goode lampoons a liberal Midwestern household. In Goode, the characters are often mocked for being green just to fit in with their friends and neighbors.”
A new episode will air Wednesday at 9 PM EDT/PDT, 8 PM CDT/MDT, with a re-run of the premiere episode to follow a half-hour later.

Wary at first

The show was funny but I only had one (outside the head) laugh.  At the college campus when the father "Gerald" found out his wife and daughter were there and his colleague pointed out that they were by the Sex Education booth "next to... the condom, I guess".

For those that didn't see it the "condom" was a large advertising baloon that car lots use.  The giant tube attached to the fan that flops around.

I think I'm over-explaining this.  I think you get the idea.  Anyway it was funny.

Carry on.

When a liberal speaks, the truth is busy elsewhere.

I loved it

I thought it was great...  had a lot of good jokes but as with Police Squad etc... you have to watch and pay attention as they go by fast.  The dog eating squirrels, cats and even fish out of some ones pond trying to get some meat... and named Che... was great.  In an effort to console his wife, he tells her... "The VIEW is on,  the pretty one is saying crazy things again"  busted me up... way to go Elizabeth...  Hopefully Judge will press on and really tear it up. SouthPark has done some good work too lately...

yeah that was really subtle

The dog named Che that is killing all of the neighborhood animals.  Most liberals wouldn't even understand they are being mocked in this scene.

Ha ha. That's a funny

Ha ha. That's a funny throwaway gag -- I'm even chuckling at your description.

Jack, I frequently find

Jack,

I frequently find the throw away gags the funniest things about shows like the Simpson's, etc. Like when they were walking through a mall and, in the background, you could see that literally every other store was a Starbucks.

In King of the Hill, Dale's basement/rec room is always a mine of fast passing gags at his creepy expense.

Wife and I thought it was

Wife and I thought it was pretty good.  Helen's solution to having forgotten her re-usable shopping bags:  don't use any bag, just stack the stuff in her arms while loudly stating that the re-usable bags are made in sweat-shops, making the other shoppers feel guilty.

Be careful -- the U.S. Department of Homeland Security thinks I'm dangerous because
1. I'm a U.S. military veteran.
2. I'm not in favor of the government spending money it doesn't have (and won't have for generations)
3. I believe free speech is for everyone.

Hey

Hey Lee T,

I am also a fellow Oregon City resident.  How does it feel to be surrounded by the Goode family just about everywhere you go?  I am pleasantly shocked that this show ever made it on the air, especially on one of the "big 3" networks.

Anything mocking the left

Anything mocking the left is going to be funny.  Heck, people on the left do it to themselves all the time without realizing it.

When the people fear the government it's called tyranny, when the government fears the people it's called liberty!

  Most of the comedy in

Most of the comedy in the show can be put under one catagory and that is the Leftists need to feel smugly superior.  We often talk about them and their use of class warfare against all things Conservative but they are no different among themselves.  It's why they appear to be part of cult because some of the stuff they say and/or do make no real world sense.  But within their worldview, it's all about who is the most 'pure' in their daily life.

The fact that Leftism is actually a cult is why it's very hard to talk to a Liberal using common sense because you're asking them to deny core 'beliefs' just to look at your point of view.  In a cult there is no alternate viewpoint just obedience to established dogma.  It's why they attack political opponents personally instead of using a counter argument based on facts.

Another good scene is when

Another good scene is when the husband, who is a professor at the local community college, is speaking with the dean and says, “You know dean, in order to achieve full racial diversity we need hire 3 more minorities on the faculty.”  The dean replies, “Or we could just get rid of 3 of the white guys.”  Good stuff – and much the same approach universities have taken to men’s sports under Title IX.

The show had some good moments and may take a little time to hit its stride.  I hope ABC gives it a chance.  I’m amazed it got on the network at all.  It will also be fun to watch if hyper sensitive liberals start attacking the show and dismissing it as inconsequential.  Then we will know Judge has truly hit a nerve.

"Attention shoppers

The owner of the SUV is in aisle 5"

hilarious...and the part about what to call Blaaa, er Africaaaa um Americans tore me up. Can't just call them people eh ? And the neighbor tells the mother where the meeting is held to decide such things was classic!! Bravo Mr. Judge

Maybe I'm just "hyper" sensitive

but I still saw the obligatory shot at Christians when the father/daughter went to the dance other than that it wasn't too bad.

HC

Same here. The funny thing is the father was all for it though. As far as abstinence goes.

Hey Well99

I think I will "straddle" the fence on this one until I see a couple of more episodes, before passing final judgment.

HC

Same but I did like the boarded up fireplace with dont kill wood written on a board.

Hey Well99

now I get it! Man I was slow on that one, if it was a snake it truly would have bit me.

yeah that was great too

In a house made of wood, ;)

I'm not really sure what I think of the christian bit, was he stereotyping the way the left sees christians, or was he stereotyping the way HE (the creator) sees christians.

If the latter is the case, than Mike Judge can see the idiocy of liberalism, but like the creators of South Park sees no relevant truth in anything and makes fun of everything.

The free market works, Government controls always fail.

mbuel

Hard to say but I will keep watching it.Hopefully it continues to poke fun at the greenies.

Surely the liberal

Surely the liberal environmentalists will soon file a lawsuit. The very concept of mocking them will destroy mother Gaia, won't it?  And don't insult Gaia by using 2 squares of toilet paper, but then again, NEVER shake hands with Cheryl Crow.

Shouldn't we do what the

Shouldn't we do what the socially aware muslims do? Wipe with your bare left hand, and shake with your right, lol.

I thought the show was well

I thought the show was well done.  I have an acquaitance who is a naturalized citizen from South Africa who is white.  He states he is African American, just as the son did in the show.  People look at him like he is nuts.

I got some chuckles and a good laugh out of it.

KOTH Clone.

It reminds me too much of those bad King of the Hill episodes where the jokes weren't apart of the story  but what they believed. (ie Season 1). Love Mike Judge and I hope the show can stay on the air long enough to evolve into what KOTH became.

This show definitely had

This show definitely had some funny moments / gags. Overall, as I said elsewhere, it was a little clunky, but that happens a lot with new shows.

Definitely worth watching again.

balboa

That is the truth.I remember when All In The Family first came on.It took awhile for them to settle in.

Very rarely is a there a

Very rarely is a there a show that hits the ground running, that's in good shape right when it starts. Most networks don't give shows much of a chance before yanking the plug, or they half-heartedly let it live, moving it from night to night, before finally canceling.

We'll see what happens here.

balboa

True. Some that were really creative were cut too soon.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuyQJjAf-wg&feature=related

Lol...yes, that show really

Lol...yes, that show really was cut down before it had a chance, along with "My Three Wives," "Manimal"...

wow balboa

Somewhere in the deep recesses of my memory(What is left of it) I remember Manimal...I dont remember My Three Wives..but something familar about the name.

I was wrong about the title.

I was wrong about the title. It was actually "I Had Three Wives." http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088539/

They each had different distinct personalities: One was a California free-wheeler, one a business woman, and so on. Sooo bad.

balboa

I think I missed that one.I m not sure if that is a bad thing.

I thought it was fairly

I thought it was fairly funny.  However, I was not happy with the portrayal of the Purity Ball.   I've been to a couple with my daughter and they weren't at all creepy.  But, I'll watch it again.

Funny with a but-

This pokes fun at the vegan-liberal-selfhating-wholefoodsshopping-hybrid-etc types but went over the line when describing Christians and the abstinence pledges by virgins and their fathers. They need to stick to bashing liberal demwits and not Christians.

Why.

Why.

Why not?

Why not?

Technically, they probably

Technically, they probably shouldn't "bash" either - since it could be argued that Christianity and liberal environmentalism are both religions.

The "Mainstream" Media: By liberals. For liberals.

No wonder brainwashing is so

No wonder brainwashing is so EFFECTIVE. People who are lauding this as a send up of "liberalism" need their heads examined. The only "values" that were "sent up" in this piece were the ones YOU profess, you of the conservative ilk, that is.

You went for the window dressing. Sure they'll throw in a couple of "digs" at the ultra liberal morons who are easy targets. They poked fun at their "extremists", the morons like the singer who wanted to wipe her butt with one piece of toilet paper. But the VALUES of liberalism were ultimately RE-INFORCED in the last act.

I realize that most of you don't have a clue as to what actually happens when you watch something, other than your enjoyment or lack therof, of course. Programs have either (+) or (-) values. In a written work for t.v or film, the keeper of those values is what we in the writing game call the "GUARDIAN CHARACTER", this character is usually NOT the "main" character, though it can be. The "guardian" has the answer to the main characters "dilemma". The interesting thing about the guardian character is that it is BEYOND JUDGEMENT. Psychologically.  Think "Star Wars" if you will. Most writing schools use this model as a teaching aid. Luke is the main character whose dilemma is the need to become a jedi-knight. Obi-wan Kenobi is the keeper or "guardian" of this knowledge. The guardian is always opposed by the "Antagonist", who always wants to stop the main character from achieving the solution to it's "dilemma". Darth Vader is not the antagonist, he is the CONtagonist, a character whose purpose is to "Hinder" the Main Characters progress. But remember Vader was fine with Luke mastering the "force" as long as he came over to the dark side. The Emperor, the real Antagonist wants Luke and the Rebels DEAD. Period.  The Antagonist doesn't have to want the good guy "dead" of course, a movie about a spelling bee, will have someone who doesn't want someone who can really spell,  to spell something, get it?

Well Hollywood has been very EFFECTIVE in moving the opinion of the public in certain directions by placing the character with the opinions they want to seem "normative", in the Guardian role. Effectively, without you noticing it, this characters opinions become the "voice" of the piece. This is done for good as well as bad. In the past placing African American actors in the guardian role effectively elevated them in the eyes of much of white America. A good thing to be sure. EVEN in roles that by today's standards might be considered demeaning, the guardian character has done it's work. Think Rothschilde on the "Jack Benny" show, while a servant, he was the conscience of the show and Benny's confidante and moral guide! In later years an effectively written Guardian Character would actually win Morgan Freeman an Oscar for "Driving Miss Daisy".

The placement of negative messages within a guardian character, will effectively poison the minds of the viewers if the guardian's perversion is seen as "normative" to the film. This device is now being used overtime in children's books like "Heather Has Two Mommies".

By normative, I mean that the G.C. NORMALIZES the thought processes of the Main Character and thereby the audience. Think "My Best Friends Wedding". The Weinstein's promise GLAD more positive homosexual role models at a dinner and out comes this work where the confidante, the guardian is flaming homosexual Rupert Everett who teaches Julia Roberts HOW TO GET A MAN. As if someone who looks like Julia has ever, in the history of history, had trouble getting a man!

Through the show the audience has a healthy dose of Everett's gayness all being cloaked in the guise of wisdom. This trend continued with Madonna's movie "The Next Best Thing". Most recently you've been seeing the previews for a movie with Drew Barrymore called "He's Just Not That In To You". In it, she expresses joy upon discovering that a man she likes has contacted her on My Space. Then not one but TWO, flaming homosexuals, proceed to educate her to the supposed fact that a My Space contact is the new "Booty Call". The clip and the movie are very funny by the way but that's not the point.

In the "Goode Family" the Mother is the extremist who the show is essentially about. The Father is the Guardian character in that HE mitigates the behavior of the MOTHER. Think about the scene where he inadvertently causes her to apologize to her daughter. This was particularly brilliant writing because he wasn't trying to influence her yet ended up doing it anyway!

The father is the "voice" of the show and while he thinks that his wife's excesses are just that, he loves her FOR her values and hates YOU for yours.

The point of the Goode Family, while "sending up" excessive liberalism along the way, is the UTTER REJECTION OF CHRISTIAN VALUES. That my friends is the point of the show. The father and daughter where HIDING FROM CHRISTIANS in the dance hall which featured a huge cross! Do they have to hit you people over the head with a sledge hammer? Or do messages that say "we are anti Christ" have to be flashed throughout like a strobe light?!

The scene includes the lie that a promise of virginity is like the girl getting "married" to her father. Nothing in the explanation given remotely suggested that. Girls with their fathers, pledge to remain virgins and "under their fathers moral authority" until he gives that authority to the young man she will later marry. That's been the basis for marriage for thousands of years. And are Christians the only ones who preach abstinence? Muslims do too, as well as real Jewish people!

For any of you to take some kind of a "pat on the back" for your values away from this show is laughable and SAD at the same time. The METHODOLOGY of liberalism was mocked in this show, not LIBERALISM itself. CHRISTIANITY itself was REJECTED in this show, not just the "methodology" of the supposed extremists at the dance!

Perhaps no better line summed it up than when the daughter concludes that her mother was RIGHT.

"MOM YOU WERE RIGHT, I DON'T BELONG WITH THOSE PEOPLE."

Those people with actual values, the one's who didn't want to whore their daughters out to the highest bidder at the first opportunity. Those who didn't want to help their daughters become whores.  The people who worship that big ol' cross they had hanging in the middle of the scary room that we had to HIDE from.

P.S For those that think that this admittedly tedious method of "peeling the grape" as we call it, or examining a written work for it's message both overt and hidden, or I'm too serious and it's all in fun, think again.

Bill Cosby had Psychologist Alvin Pouisantte (sic) review EVERY script after the writers finished because he was aware of their practice of apparently saying one thing in a script while subconsciously upholding values to the contrary. Cos wanted to know that the hidden messages in the piece were those with which he was in accord. And he frequently found it necessary to fire writers on the spot and even a director or two because of this practice. I know, I was there. God bless.

Funny stuff.

Yeah, the abstinence marriage thing was creepy, but I have to say this show is funny and have some potential.  You can catch the whole episode on Hulu.  I just hope they don't go down the road to bashing conseravtives.  There's enough of that on Family Guy.

Miz,

I don't mind them lampooning conservatives, as long as it's based on recognizable real traits (that's what makes satire funny) and they continue to mock liberals too. Fair and balanced...

I'm sorry, but...

I'm sorry to have to say this but, even as a Conservative, I found the premire episode of this show to be extremely unfunny and just plain stupid and full of cliches.
