Williams Piles on Palin: Confused, Wardrobe, Unqualified, Deposition

Photo of Brent Baker.

Friday's NBC Nightly News carried the third excerpt from Brian Williams' time Wednesday with John McCain and Sarah Palin and, unlike his challenging approach to basic McCain-Palin premises in segments aired Wednesday and Thursday night, Williams kept it light as he asked how she's “liking” the campaign trail, wondered, when she cited “lies” about her, if there's “anything you want to correct the record on?” and raised “the inevitable question about her future in politics?” But he made up for the soft take in advance by prefacing the interview excerpt with a recitation of her “tough week.” Though it was more of a “tough week” for Palin through the media's prism than reality, Williams justified the “tough week” description:

She had told a student questioner the Vice President was quote “in charge” of the U.S. Senate. Then came the story about the RNC ponying up $150,000 for a new high-end wardrobe and other personal items, damaging to the self-described hockey mom.

But the more damaging numbers, the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll showing 55 percent of respondents now believe Palin is not qualified to be President. Then just today Palin and her husband were placed under oath for depositions in the so-called Trooper-gate investigation in Alaska.

Williams Hits McCain & Palin with Powell's Charge She's Unqualified,” my NewsBusters item on the first excerpt, aired on Wednesday's NBC Nightly News:

Brian Williams, who was enamored with Barack Obama in two interviews this year in which he celebrated the liberal Democrat's achievements, in a Wednesday interview with the Republican ticket challenged the premises of their campaign. Recalling the woman in an audience who claimed Obama is Arab, Williams channeled left-wing efforts to discredit McCain: “Did this campaign get out of your control?”

When McCain raised Joe Biden's warning that Obama's election will precipitate “an international crisis,” Williams countered with how “Joe Lieberman said on Face the Nation quote, 'our enemies will test the new President early. And it has happened throughout modern history.'” Unsatisfied by McCain's explanation, Williams followed up: “When he says the new President will be tested, though, I'm missing how that's different from Senator Lieberman saying quote 'our enemies will test the new President early.'”

In the last question in the interview excerpt aired on Wednesday's NBC Nightly News, Williams forced them to respond to Colin Powell as Williams cited his assessment Palin is unqualified:

Let me ask you both about what must have been a hurtful Sunday for you especially, you Senator McCain, Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama and Governor, respectfully, the heart of his quote, about Governor Palin, Senator McCain, "I don't believe she's ready to be President of the United States which is the job of Vice President. And so that raised some question in my mind as to the judgment that Senator McCain made." When you heard those words from a man you've known for a long time, what was your reaction, saying basically we have little to judge these future leaders on except for the big decision of picking a running mate?

Williams had set up the segment by highlighting news that the RNC spent $150,000 on clothing for Palin and her family, followed by:

Then there are the polls out there, our own showing the GOP ticket ten points down with most respondents now saying Sarah Palin is not qualified to be President.

My Thursday posting, “Williams Pushes McCain & Palin on Ayers, Avoid Wright, Define 'Elite,'” recounted the second excerpt which ran on Thursday's NBC Nightly News:

In the second excerpt of his interview with John McCain and Sarah Palin, NBC's Brian Williams continued, for the second night, to challenge the premises of the McCain-Palin campaign as he pushed back at describing William Ayers as a “domestic terrorist” since “it give it a vaguely post-9/11 hint” by associating terrorist with “domestic crimes,” so “is an abortion clinic bomber a terrorist?” Instead of prodding McCain about why he hasn't cited Jeremiah Wright when Obama had a long-time close relationship with the fount of anti-American and racial rants, Williams sought assurance Wright will remain off the table: “Are you going to keep your promise not to involve Reverend Wright in the campaign?”

Williams next snidely demanded to learn from Palin “what is an elite? Who is a member of the elite?” before pressing her: “Governor, are you a feminist?” (Last month, CBS's Katie Couric posed the same question: “Do you consider yourself a feminist?”)

Setting up the interview excerpt on Thursday's NBC Nightly News, Williams highlighted how “Sarah Palin's day today was spent prepping for tomorrow when Sarah and Todd Palin will be deposed under oath in that so-called Trooper-gate case” and: “The deposition, along with yesterday's revelation of that new $150,000 wardrobe and her struggle earlier this week to define the job of Vice President, have all brought a lot of unwelcome attention to the Palin side of the campaign.”

From the Friday, October 24 NBC Nightly News, the third and final excerpt, with the interview session conducted Wednesday outside an Akron-area high school:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: NBC News “In Depth” Tonight, we're back more on the campaign trail.  Specifically more of our interview with Sarah Palin. We caught up with her on the campaign trail in Ohio this past week, an eventful week. Tonight we talk about the campaign experience, her relationship with John McCain, and what she says the media got wrong.

By the time we caught up with the GOP ticket on the trail at midweek, it had been a tough week for Sarah Palin.

McCain and Palin don't relate to each other like close friends. They've only really known each other for two months and for most of that time they've been traveling in separate orbits across the continent. When they're together, at least in front of a visitor, they catch up on each other's children and talk about that day's campaign strategy.

Just this week, Palin seemed to be taking charge of more of her message and her time with the media. At one point she broke away from her handlers to take a few questions on an airport on tarmac.

SARAH PALIN: We're doing interviews everyday. We've got interviews scheduled every day.

WILLIAMS: Are you liking it more?

PALIN: I've loved it from day one. My life has been an open book. And my life is an open book today. And, you know, Americans deserve to know that the background, the associations, the affiliations of the VP candidate. I'm willing to continue to be an open book. But I tell you, there have been some unfair shots taken by some of your colleagues against, certainly, trying to spin my record into something that it is not and that's been a little bit frustrating. But I think the most frustratingthing has been some unfair shots taken against my family because they have been based on lies and that's kind of hurtful.

WILLIAMS: Anything you want to correct the record on?

PALIN: We've been trying from day one to correct the record on things like my alleged attempts to censor books. Of course, that's never happened. And my record of -- oh, shoot, you know I'm not going to rehash some of the old, ugly stuff. But, Brian, there is some frustration there in understanding you can't pick a fight with those who buy ink by the barrel full in the media. It doesn't do any good. But if these things were true that have been said about me or my family or my record as a Governor and Mayor, if those things were true, I wouldn't like me either if I were to believe all of the things that have been reported. There's been a lot of false allegations out there.

WILLIAMS: Our brief conversation led to the inevitable question about her future in politics, if she and John McCain do not win on November 4th.

PALIN: As for furtherance in a political career, I'm not even going to think about that. I'm thinking between now and November 4th, what it is that we have to do in reaching out to the electorate, letting them know who John McCain is, what we represent, and how electing John McCain is the right decision for the feature of America.

WILLIAMS: Even though you know the talk about you will start the day after the election if you're unsuccessful?

PALIN: Well, I'm concentrating on November 4th and just, you know, having alot of faith in the wisdom of the people, understanding that getting the economy back on track and winning the wars, John McCain is the right leader to get us there on both those fronts.

Lets compare

Obama spent $5.3 million on his phony baloney Greek temple and got an audience smaller than Palin got with her $150k in clothes. So who was better at using campaign cash?

It must be horrible to work

It must be horrible to work for a network that has sold its soul for this presidential election. In my opinion, NBC will never recover. I guess Brian Williams can go back to volunteer firefighter.

Post Election Surprise

All these haughty alphabet network anchors and anchorettes will have crow to cry about.  Can't wait..I can hear Journey's "Who's Crying Now?" playing in my ears..

Headlines on Nov. 5, "Obama Bombs", "Democrats Cry Foul!", and the dreaded "Obama Loses Election:  Riots Next?"

Man, I am praying that

Man, I am praying that statement is true.  I quit watching Brian Williams months ago.  It disgusts me to see these morons in the tank for Barry......(some dinner just came up a little)

Think she might have liked to respond...

Brian for gosh sakes, I've been a mother, a mayor, a govenor and I've been tapped as the candidate for Vice President of The United States. Do you really think I let petty stuff like that take me off task? Get a clue sport!

KoolAid Drinkin Brian

NBC was once a giant in network news.  Now, NBC is a network weesel PR Headquarters to elect B. Hussein.

Silly Brian Williams sold his soul to the party of Pelosi, Soros, & Reid.

Does not the Constitution

Does not the Constitution define the Veep's role as to preside over the Senate, and if necessary, cast a tie-breaking vote?

Do liberals even own a dictionary???

I'm glad Williams got his interview.

Well, now it's official, the alphabets are all  in the tank for Obama.  Without the Williams interview there would have been some doubt.  Now, anyone with access to the internet, can review the interviews conducted with Senator Obama and Governor Palin and compare how they were done.  I hope America has noticed how our media has squandered the freedom it was guaranteed by our constitution.  I hope there ends up being one school of journalism that actually looks at this election and decides to use it as a tool to train future journalists about what their job is.

There wont be that one

There wont be that one school of Journalism looking back at 2008 untill after Oman and the Left starts running rampant over the "Free" Press.  They will eventually see themselves as controlled, with free speech crushed under Omans PC police .. then Journalists will rise up .. it will take while but the stuff they learned when they were in college will comeback to them... they will understand that they were duped and blinded by the Left and the media's masters .. it will take while but all people yearn for freedom .. our founders knew this and after Oman and the Left have done enough damage the people will say enough of this shit .....it will be a discouraging few years but it will happen

What I want to see

OK this is my secret Sarah Palin fantasy.

I want to see Gov. Palin being interviewed by Brian Williams..... ok it is just some prick liberal like Williams or Matthews, and all of a sudden out of the corner of the camera comes one of her little girls who tasers Williams and he drops to the floor like a rock.

The Gov. says, "Oh my what an accident this was as the Secret Service must have left a taser laying around".

The little girl says, "Oh my I thought it was just a toy, but that jerk sure deserved it."

No harm, no foul and what great payback television.

Trig should be older as he could just hit Williams in the taters for great TV.

Hmmm, would it be considered rude if Sarah kicked these media jerks in the crotch every time they ask a rude gotcha type of question?

Uh huh

Ha!

Whiney Williams and his Thing with 55...

"But the more damaging numbers, the NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll showing 55 percent of respondents now believe Palin is not qualified to be President."

Is that like the 55 days Brian was whining about?  I think we should be asking ourselves if Brian the Whiner Williams is qualified to be a reporter.

"When you heard those words from a man you've known for a long time, what was your reaction, saying basically we have little to judge these future leaders on except for the big decision of picking a running mate?"

Why not say, "Well, Brian, do you think Powell mighta picked Obama to back because he's black?! I mean, he had to do something to get past his label from the liberal black community as Uncle Tom Powell."

Duh. I'm sick of hearing these fearful idiots.  They can't find anything legitimate, so they create something.  Her wardrobe.  How ridiculous.  "Troopergate" (what a ridiculous phrase) was created and investigated by a team of liberals (who support BHO).

If Palin wasn't so much of a lady, she'd tell them what they should do.  If I weren't such a lady, I'd tell you what she'd tell them they should do.

I carry a pistol because my rifle won't fit in my purse.

Gee, nice sig name

Great minds' think alike?

I guess I'll just add that there cannot possibly be anyone more smug than Brian Williams.

Well!

I actually tried your username, but it wouldn't give it to me.  In my frustration, I finally settled for AllRighty because %*&^*&^%%$#@! wouldn't work either.

Nice to meetcha.

And yes, Brian Williams is smug.  Charlie Gibson is smug.  Katie Couric is snotty. Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews are downright certifiable. Um, Bill O'Reilly is arrogant.  (I'm still ticked about his interview with BHO.)

I carry a pistol because my rifle won't fit in my purse.

I want to know how something

I want to know how something like the price of clothing gets out to the media.  It's really nobody's G-damn business!!  How much for those stupid plugs Biden has stuck in his head where hair used to be.  What about those ridiculous pearls that all the democrats where around their neck? (the real ones). I hope everyone remembers this crap the media is pulling; there is absolutely NO reason to be nice to liberals.

Simply inform NBC and their

Simply inform NBC and their sponsors that you are turning both off.

WOMB (Williams, Olbermann. Matthews, Brokaw)

WOMB has done more to advance the failure of network news than anyone or thing.  They will surely find another place to lay the blame, but the facts are solid.  Damn shame they are beyond the third trimester.  Wait...does that apply?  Aren't they exempt?  Does anyone care?

Economy, economy, economy, economy, economy, economy, economy!

The MSM won't discuss the number one issue that is being discussed at the water cooler because, as Obama cheerleaders have discovered, the democrats are responsible for the current mess. Any other question asked by the press is a smokescreen.

That's right it is the economy you stupid MSM hacks and McCain advisors!

This is crucial: When Palin, McCain or any republican pundit are asked ANY question, not relating to the economy, they must change the subject to the economy and effectively explain how the democrats are at the heart of this mess by reminding viewers who is in charge in Washington. Remember, the press had no problem running "lame duck" stories ad nauseam about the Bush presidency. Now is the time to remind the people that the administration has no control over the democrat led congress. For Pete sakes even the elitists at SNL know this.

Good idea, Crash

Abu_Nudnik

Thank You Abu.

Republicans/conservatives have been lackluster over this issue. Last week Neal Boortz's ran a poll asking "what's the most important topic in this campaign." The delusional overwhelmingly agreed that is was "terrorism." In the world of politics that's what we call beating a dead horse.

It isn't that they are wrong about the importance of protecting our national & international interests. But, it is absolutely crucial that we defend the capitalistic machine that keeps our sovereignty strong (the economy). Obama wants to redistribute my hard earned, well planned money to those who aren't willing to go the extra mile.

I really don't understand

what purpose is served by agreeing to an interview with someone they KNOW is only interested in trashing the ticket.  Am I supposed to really believe that an interview by Williams has any chance of being fair?  Especially when you know snippets will be used by the 2  idiots at MSMNBS - Chris M & Keith O?

While there may still be some undecided voters who would see the interview on NBC the campaign had to know that the network would twist it to put anything said in the worst possible light.

IMO the McCain people should have told NBC they were being ignored as a consequence of the behavior of MSMNBC and if anyone publically commented just rationally explain that it serves no purpose to walk gently to a flogging.

McCain/Palin must go to

McCain/Palin must go to hostile interviews, regardless of how much flack is directed at them. If they handle themselves well they will appear solid. And confidence is what people need to hear from their leaders (today more than ever). McCain had better come off as a confident optimistic leader otherwise he's washed up. When voters enter the booth on November 4th that gut feeling will be all that most of them will have to go on.

Obama has dictated countless rules of what is or isn't allowed; thus shutting down discussion. That may work in third world countries, but, this is the USA. In my book that is a sign of weakness and it reeks of a dictator. If he can't take a tiny bit of criticism now, how will he ever stick up for our best interest in world affairs. I think that Joe public has taken notice. Thanks to recent comments from Joe Biden and Joe the plumber.

Quite mean, really

I mean, he pretty much said, "You're going to lose. How do you feel about that and will you crawl under a rock and cry?" Very mean spirited. I'm not so sure that the longer this pandering goes on, the more the public will dislike the "party" planned for November 5th.

But there's something other than liberal bias here and without recognizing it the inmates may well take over the asylum. Journalists, like actors, judges and everybody else (and possibly pollsters now) have become activists. But under all that, journalists dream of breaking the big story or, failing that, being a part of a big story. "America Elects First Black President" is a big headline and I think a lot of people in the press got really excited by that headline and some of them won't allow anything to "steal" that story from their lovin' arms. That's why they see no, hear no, speak no evil about Obama and his strange bedfellows. Who hasn't approved of his candidacy? Hamas, Castro, Wright, Ayers, the Iranian Parliament...

Black Liberation Theology ought to be at the center of this campaign because it's significant. "Spreading the wealth around" means something different in the light of Obama's spiritual home, the home he now disavows. What kind of a person would stick with a church and then walk away from it when the going got hot. Is that loyalty? What kind of character does he have? All these things are closed topics. "I don't know him!" Surely Christians recognize that line.

And what is wrong with saying the VP is "in charge" of the Senate. She presides over the Senate. Is that better? Holy cow! Why didn't she just say "You, Brian: you are a member of the elite because you make fun of people for how they speak instead of addressing what they say."

Aw, poor little pit bull in

Aw, poor little pit bull in lipstick.  "Barracuda" is the nickname she chose.

Palin says Obama is "Not like us."  I certainly hope not! I'm not like her, either.  I don't go on $150,000 shopping sprees with other people's money.  I don't hate Catholics, Mormons, Masons, and everybody who doesn't believe that Ally Oop really, really did saddle and ride dinosaurs.  Her preacher said that anyone who voted for Kerry in the last election would go to hell for it.  Her prayer group prayed for the death of Princess Di and Mother Teresa-and believe that God granted their prayers.  Her husband wants for Alaska to secede from the Union.  Her pregnant unwed daughter wasn't allowed to know about birth control, and a panel dominated by fellow Republicans decided that she had behaved unethically as governor of Alaska.  In her interview with Katie Couric, she was completely, comically incoherent when asked a simple, straightforward policy question.  Lady, I am nothing at all like you, and I'm proud of it.  You betcha, durn tootin' gosh-darned right I am.  If a $10 contribution to the political party to last have a federal budget surplus - the Democratic Party - will keep Palin from being one elderly, cancer-prone heartbeat away from the leadership of the free world, where do I send my check?

EF-benjamin

i will only answer one of your idiocies i have to get to my daughter volleyball game.

i has been fully reported that palin DID NOT go on a $150k shopping spree.  the clothes were purchased for her by the RNC AND most will not even be worn her and all will be donated to charity.

and if you think that is anything compared to how some of the 600mil that obama has pried from his supporters has been spent ( read greek columns ) then you sir are worse than hitler!! ( thank you greg gutfield i love red-eye! )

I also don't understand why

I also don't understand why they answer any of these antagonistic questions from the MSM. They should not allow themselves to be put on the defensive.

They need to talk specific policy, economic and foreign, they need to be on offense, controlling the discussion firmly, speaking to the public and ignoring the interviewer.

It is obvious the MSM are trying to anger both McCain and Palin, but because they don't take over the conversation they come across as wimps imo. They have to show themselves, and come across as being strong, confident, and experienced leaders. Who the hell is advising them?

Speaking of spending Brian....

Then came the story about the RNC ponying up $150,000 for a new high-end wardrobe and other personal items, damaging to the self-described hockey mom.

And still waiting on the story of Obama ponying up hundreds of thousands of dollars in legal fees attempting to keep from producing his birth certificate, damaging to the self-described open candidate.

If Obama can post his supposed birth certificate on his campaign website why would he spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to prevent a US court of law from examining the original?  That seems a more relavent question than wardrobe costs.
