Williams Hits McCain & Palin with Powell's Charge She's Unqualified

Brian Williams, who was enamored with Barack Obama in two interviews this year in which he celebrated the liberal Democrat's achievements, in a Wednesday interview with the Republican ticket challenged the premises of their campaign. Recalling the woman in an audience who claimed Obama is Arab, Williams channeled left-wing efforts to discredit McCain: “Did this campaign get out of your control?”

When McCain raised Joe Biden's warning that Obama's election will precipitate “an international crisis,” Williams countered with how “Joe Lieberman said on Face the Nation quote, 'our enemies will test the new President early. And it has happened throughout modern history.'” Unsatisfied by McCain's explanation, Williams followed up: “When he says the new President will be tested, though, I'm missing how that's different from Senator Lieberman saying quote 'our enemies will test the new President early.'”

In the last question in the interview excerpt aired on Wednesday's NBC Nightly News, Williams forced them to respond to Colin Powell as Williams cited his assessment Palin is unqualified:

Let me ask you both about what must have been a hurtful Sunday for you especially, you Senator McCain, Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama and Governor, respectfully, the heart of his quote, about Governor Palin, Senator McCain, "I don't believe she's ready to be President of the United States which is the job of Vice President. And so that raised some question in my mind as to the judgment that Senator McCain made." When you heard those words from a man you've known for a long time, what was your reaction, saying basically we have little to judge these future leaders on except for the big decision of picking a running mate?

Williams had set up the segment by highlighting news that the RNC spent $150,000 on clothing for Palin and her family, followed by:

Then there are the polls out there, our own showing the GOP ticket ten points down with most respondents now saying Sarah Palin is not qualified to be President.

The most upbeat question from Williams noted how far McCain had come from carrying his own garment bag, but:

Here you are, you're down, you're down in money. How do you stay up?

Compare the tone of this interview session with his approach to Barack Obama, as recounted in “Williams Tosses Softballs to Obama, Empathizes Over Elitist Image,” my May 8 NewsBusters item:

Brian Williams, who slobbered over Barack Obama in their last interview in early January, did so again in a Thursday session conducted at Washington, DC's Newseum and excerpted on the NBC Nightly News. Back on January 7, Williams handed Obama a Newsweek with "Inside Obama's Dream Machine" as the cover story and wondered: "How does this feel, of all the honors that have come your way, all the publicity? Who does it make you think of? Is there, is there a loved one?" On Thursday, Williams didn't pose a single challenging question nor mention Jeremiah Wright in any of the ten questions aired, but pulled the same magazine stunt, this time holding up the new Time with a smiling Obama on the cover by the words, "And the Winner* Is..." Williams fondly recalled: "Last time we were together, I handed you a copy of Newsweek, it was the first time you'd held it in your hands with you on the cover. Have you yet held this in your hands?"

Obama said he had not, prompting Williams to remind him: "Last time you looked at it and you thought instantly of your mom." Obama effused: "She'd like that picture. She always encouraged me to smile more." Proceeding to cue up Obama for a long recitation on how he's not an elitist, Williams empathized: "You end up with people talking about your bowling score, gutter balls, wearing a tie, wearing a tie with farmers. And how have you dealt with that? Is there an operating theory that guides your life these days?"

All of the questions posed by Williams to McCain and Palin in the excerpt of the interview, conducted at an Akron-area high school, aired on the Wednesday, October 22 NBC Nightly News:

- Senator, I will begin with your observation on the tarmac. You came in today, there's not one, but two planes with your name on the side. You immediately started reminiscing about the depths of New Hampshire, it was you and your garment bag coming off the commercial flight. But here you are, you're down, you're down in money. How do you stay up?

- Did this campaign get out of your control? And here's what I mean: A lot of people who know you well saw you take that microphone from that woman in Wisconsin and for the first time in a long time they said, “there, that's John McCain.”

- You mention Senator Biden's comment the other day about, a new President and a test of the new President's mettle, one of your very closest friends in the Senate, Joe Lieberman said on Face the Nation quote, “our enemies will test the new President early. And it has happened throughout modern history.”

- Governor Palin, yesterday you tied this notion of an early test to a new President with this notion of preconditions that you both have been hammering the Obama campaign on. First of all, what in your mind is a precondition?

- When he says the new President will be tested, though, I'm missing how that's different from Senator Lieberman saying quote “our enemies will test the new President early.”

- Let me ask you both about what must have been a hurtful Sunday for you especially, you Senator McCain, Colin Powell's endorsement of Barack Obama and Governor, respectfully, the heart of his quote, about Governor Palin, Senator McCain, "I don't believe she's ready to be President of the United States which is the job of Vice President. And so that raised some question in my mind as to the judgment that Senator McCain made.” When you heard those words from a man you've known for a long time, what was your reaction, saying basically we have little to judge these future leaders on except for the big decision of picking a running mate?

Another excerpt will air on Thursday's NBC Nightly News.

Is she qualified? Well,

Is she qualified? Well, what are your bloody qualifications? My qualifications are written on the U.S. Constitution. If you have anything to add, you're 232 years too late. Next question?

Actually Sara Palin isn't

Actually Sara Palin isn't qualified to be Vice President under the constitution of the United States. There is a stipulation in the Constitution  detailing the requirements of appointing a VP if something happens to the President or Vice president. Meaning the order of succession doesn't apply, the president can appoint someone to be VP with the advice and counsel of the congress, meaning congress will have to vote on whether this person is qualified to be the VP.

And there is no way, no how that any congress in the history of this country, whether Republican or democrat would ever believe this women is qualified to be president, John McCain would never even dream of nominating her because just like Harriet Miers, Sara Palin's nomination would go down in flames.

So to answer your question, Sara is not qualified to be president under the qualifications written in the U.S Constitution.

Qualifications?

First, saying that Congress would not approve her is not the same as saying that she doesn't meet the Constitutional requirements.  Constitutional requirements mean that she is of age, has lived her a certain amount of time and was born in the United States.  She meets these qualifications.

Next, voting for Obama because Palin is inexperienced is like voting for McCain because Biden is old!

That's exactly right,

That's exactly right, Archer.

Look at how many SCOTUS and other judges with exceptional qualifications  have been disapproved by the Senate because they didn't like the person's viewpoint.

This ideology crap only crept into these processes when liberals realized they couldn't get their way with votes, and decided to get it with judges.

For over half our history, Congressional approval of Federal judges had to be unanimous.  Your "ideology crap" statement doesn't make sense.

You're not driving right now, are you?

There is a stipulation in

There is a stipulation in the Constitution  detailing the requirements
of appointing a VP if something happens to the President or Vice
president.

I can't find that.  Would you please elaborate?

Why should a VP be appointed if something happens to the President?

If something happens to the VP, the President appoints a new one, as happened when Spiro Agnew resigned and Ford was named. I don't recall any big argument about Ford's "qualifications."

At least she can prove she

At least she can prove she is a US citizen. More qualified than someone else running in this election.

You make an interesting point.  The Bush Administration has argued that Gitmo is not US Territory - and therefore our laws do not apply there.

A logical extention of that arguement is that the US Military Base in the Panama Canal Zone is not US Territory, either...

So should we just proceed with Palin vs. Biden for all the marbles?

I like that even better.

Name the article or ammendment that disqualifies Gov. Palin from being pres. or vice pres. There are none.

"Actually Sara Palin isn't

"Actually Sara Palin isn't qualified to be Vice President under the constitution of the United States"

And which requirement for the office of President enumerated by the Constitution does Sarah Palin not meet?

Certainly not the one Barack Obama does not meet:  "No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States."

The sad thing is that these types of double standards in behavior are true, visible signs of the bias that exists in the media.

But if you asked Williams or another personality to admit it - or even see it - you're going to get a blank stare in return.

Brian Williams = Ted Baxter

TED !!!!!!!

Williams followed up:

Williams followed up: “When he says the new President will be tested, though, I'm missing how that's different from Senator Lieberman saying quote 'our enemies will test the new President early.'”

Well,

A.) I see hegot the talking point.

B.) So what if some one ask the question before, does it change the answer???

Ronald Reagan, 1962: I did not leave the Democratic party, the party left me.

Insert: your name, 2008, and the Republican party.

Boy howdy....

That one in the middle sure looks familiar.  hmmmm.....  I just can't put my finger on it.

Blazing Saddles

I guess Williams and Chuck Todd are throwing away any doubt about their bias. Williams and Todd were on Chris Matthew’s Hardball show talking about this interview. They moaned that there just was no chemistry between McCain and Palin over and over again as they sat together during the interview. How those two would work together was a mystery to them.

I suppose Obama and Biden do have chemistry. Obama is the new sheriff in town and Biden is his bumbling deputy that sole purpose is comedic relief in this bad remake of Mel Brook’s Blazing Saddles.

I truly believe that

I truly believe that Republicans should start keeping a dossier of the questions that reporters ask Democrats and bone up on them before an interview with said reporter.  This way when they are asked the questions that was never asked of the Democrat they can say to the reporter "Hey, that's a good question, how did so and so answer that one? Oh wait, you NEVER asked them THAT kind of question.

Also, after seeing Gov. Palins answers in the CBS and ABC interview were edited in such a way that entire sentances were cut out, the Republicans should videotape the entire interview themselves so the real answers can be seen.

NEVER trust the MSM.

He's PO'd

You can hear it in his voice and see it in his body language.  "We've waited 55 days for this interview".  Then he complained about what a short amount of time he was given.  "An hours worth of questions having to be reduced to 28 minutes".  He's going to be showing it over the next few nights.  I'm guessing the "damaging" part will come closest to election day.  What's the big deal with Palin's medical records being released?  William's said the McCain campaign was surprised by it. (Meaning there must be something awful in it).  Boo Hoo, Brian.  Take a look at your network's coverage of the campaign and then ask yourself why you didn't get an earlier interview.  I don't think you should have been given one at all.

Williams debates McCain/Palin

Was this an interview or a debate?  I am just surprised that Williams remmebered to remove his Obama pin before the interview started.  On this morning's Today show, he set up the clip of the interview by complaining how difficult it was to get an interview with Palin and how many preconditions were placed on how the interview would be conducted.  Of course, Matt Lauer never came back with what I think is the obvious question which would be, "How does the number of interviews Palin has done compare with the number of interviews done by Senator Biden?  When are you going to do an interview with him?"

Preconditions

I am a McCain supporter, so don't get me wrong, but I think Palin could have answered the question of Iranian preconditions much better.  If I remember correctly, Iran stated recently that there would be two preconditions for talks with the U.S. President:  1) The U.S. must remove its military forces fromt the Middle East.  2) The U.S. must drop its support of Isreal.

So, Palin should have reminded the audience of this and stated that she assumes Obama's plan to meet with Iran means that he is willing to accept these two preconditions.  It would then be up to the Obama campaign to say whether they will be willing to meet these preconditions or not.

At the end of every answer, Palin should say something like "You know that was an excellent question. I think the American people would be interested in how Senator Biden would answer it. When is the next time you will have an opportunity to ask him this question?"

Does anybody know where the

Does anybody know where the $150k Palin wardrobe number comes from? Or is it similar to the $700 Billion dollar bailout number..  just something grabbed out of the air.  Tell you what..  let's throw a number out there for Michelle Obama. Let's take $150,000 and divide it by say 55 days since Palin was announced as McCain's VP pick. That would equal a pretty high daily number, like about $2,700.  Now, let's take that daily rate and come up with 'A NUMBER' that Michelle Obama has probably spent on her wardrobe, since what..  February 10, 2007?  From 2/10/07 to today, that'd be about 621 days multiplied by $2,700 equals $1,676,700. OMG..  Alert the Media!!!!!

rimsky:

The $150,000 clothing figure and $4,700 haircut and makeup figures comes directly from the RNC financial reports.

This information is very, very easy to confirm.  All you have to do is look.

Gov. Palin has an established history of feeding at other people's expense - State of Alaska pays to fly her family around; State of Alaska pays her a per diem to stay at home, etc.  That's her history and she just hasn't changed.

Meanwhile, Sen. Obama's campaign has spent $0 on clothing either for himself or for his wife.

So it is true. Your

So it is true.

Your emperor and his wife have no clothes.

Karma:

No, they just get them the old fashioned American way - they pay for them with their very own money.

Oh, you mean the money they

Oh, you mean the money they got when BHO was bought off by Countrywide?  Or the money they secured in that shady little land deal with convicted felon Tony Rezko?  Perhaps Michelle gets her wardrobe from all the money the Obamas don't give to charity.

"Meanwhile, Sen. Obama's campaign has spent $0 on clothing either for himself or for his wife."

that may be frank, but at least the McCain campaign hasn't paid $800,000 to Acorn to buy votes!

and btw, the Palins reported $167,000 of income last year probably less than Barry spent on crack. So it's understandable that the RNC would dress the Palin's up a bit to level the playing field.

Remember that Republican Convention video of Mrs. McCain and Mother Teresa?  Not a subject I would have suggested they bring up.  Remember Lincoln Savings?  And Charles Keating?

Mrs. McCain and her father invested over $350,000 with him.  A year later, Sen. McCain met with the regulators telling them to back off Lincoln Savings.

When he was on trial Mother Teresa wrote a letter to the judge telling him what a wonderful man Mr. Keating was.  The Federal prosecutor wrote Mother Teresa back, telling her the records show a $1,000,000 donation to her charity - made with stolen funds.  Would she please return that money to the folks who lost their life savings in the failure?  He didn't hear any more from Mother Teresa.

And the US taxpayers lost $2,000,000,000 in the Lincoln Savings collapse.

It's been obvious for years he has a great deal of trouble maintaining a consistent position on issues - he changes just as often as he feels he must to keep seeking votes.  Unfortunately, he's so concerned with winning he's forgotten why he wanted to be President in the first place.

"BDS filled rants?"

You are befuddled, indeed...

Prove it frank. I don't

Prove it frank. I don't believe your claim that the Hussein campaign spent $0 on their clothes.

cocodrie;

Prove a  negative?

Show us a campaign finance report that shows they did.  We already have the RNC report.  Why waste money on Pennsylvania and Ohio tv commercials when you can spend money at Needless Markups?

You're the expert - where are your facts?

frank

The statement of $0 on clothes is yours not mine, prove it. Is this another one of your bogus claims?

cocodrie:

Leaving aside the "another" lie - Politico broke the story of Gov. Palin's $150,000 clothing spree.  About what she made as governor of Alaska, isn't it?  Leaving aside her generous per diem, family travel expenses, etc.

Politico asked the Obama campaign about it.  Their response?

The Obama campaign says that “neither the Obama campaign nor the DNC have ever bought clothes for any of the Obamas or the Bidens.”

Now the RNC is trying to wipe the egg off its face with the story that the clothing will be donated to charity.  That makes it all, ok, doesn't it?  I'm sure those poor folks out there look forward to wearing Sarah Palin's used underwear.  Who does she think she is, Nancy Reagan?

Not good enough frank

You present the statements of liars to prove the claims of liars. Where are the receipts from Hussein for the clothes?

cocodrie:

You have no facts.  The fact is the RNC blew 150 large on Gov. Palin's clothes.  Then they made up this story that all along they were going to donate the items to charity.  How generous!  Folks don't have a house or a job - but they get to wear Sarah Palin's used clothes.  What a thrill!

Talk about waving the white flag of surrender.  The RNC knows McCain-Palin are going to lose.  If they planned on winning, wouldn't she need those clothes as VP?  Or is planning on pulling a Nancy Reagan?

Dream on cocodrie,

If the obama campaign will not release a valid birth certificate, and they won't release the names of donors of $200.00 or less, which has raised $200-300 million (very suspect), and will not return donations over the madated maximum of $4,600.00, they most certainly will not disclose their clothing expenditures.

Yes, McCain and Palin

Yes, McCain and Palin should really be worried about what some socially-promoted bureaucrat and a hairsprayed news flunky think about her qualifications.

Every time the MSM brings up "Is she qualified?", McCain should

Every time the MSM brings up the "Is she qualified?" question, anyone and everyone involved in the McCain campain should TAKE THE OPPORTUNITY TO FIRST RESPOND with "Well, before I answer that in the affirmative, let's ask the quesiton "Is Barack Obama - the guy at the TOP of the Dem tick - qualified?".  Then have a standard, very short list of Obama's accomplishments and experience to date (which essentially amounts to him serving as a STATE senator for 7 years, serving Chicago's 13th district, and then spending 3 years running for president of the United States - THAT'S IT).

And if the MSM Obama surrogate conducting the interview attempts to interrupt, just keep going.   If Talking Head tries to inject "Polls show X% of Americans don't think she's qualified"
, respond with, "well, sure.  You guys have been telling the American people she's unqualified for 2 months now.  BTW, Pew Research shows that the bias in favor of Obama and against McCain/Palin is completely off the charts.  How do you respond to that, Brian?"

krendler

I'd love to see it but it would never happen.

I saw someone (on Fox, I think) interviewing an Obama supporter, who was spewing talking points and tried the same type of turn-about, asking questions instead of answering them.  IIRC, it was Megan Kendall, who said something like "no, no, no, no, no...this works better when I ask the questions".

Of course, the dummy's in the MsM wouldn't be quite so quick on their feet.

It was a great thought, though.

In his own words (19 seconds):  This man is qualified to be VP?

Qualified?

Ask Sen. McCain.  He's the one who said "I am prepared.  I am prepared.  I need no on-the-job training.  I wasn't a mayor for a short period of time.  I wasn't a governor for a short period of time."

Hey Fwank

Our ticket is light years ahead of yours in experience and qualifications.  But go on projecting your short comings, you do provide some comic relief over here.

Scuba Dude:

Projecting?  You suggest Candidate McCain doesn't agree with Candidate McCain?  I know there are major differences between Sen. McCain and Candidate McCain - that would have been the most entertaining debate of all.  Now you're telling me the Candidate doesn't agree with himself?  Wow!

So?

Palin is definitely, legally, qualified to be VP (and has enough experience to be a much better president than that obamination running on the marxist, er, um, dimmicrat ticket). Brian Williams isn't even qualified to read a teleprompter.

just listening:

When a poor team loses, the first thing they do is blame the refs.

Perhaps if Sen. McCain actually knew how to manage a national campaign, if he could organize himself enough to present a consistent message about why he should be elected - rather than loosely supervise a 1958 or '68 campaign about why his opponent should lose - he might have had a chance.

Instead he kept playing the POW Card.  Why should he be President?  He was a POW.  Why does he own 6 or 7 or 8 houses?  Because he was a POW.  When he first ran for Senator in Arizona he'd just moved to the state.  Why?  Because he was  POW?  Can't use modern electronics?  He was a POW.

Well, he failed to put the WOW in POW...Even those who suffered with him in prison state he shouldn't be President.  Fellow senators - including a very conservative one - have stated the thought scares them.  It should.

Of course Sen. McCain could have picked a VP candidate actually qualified to serve as President.  The majority of American voters clearly understand Gov. Palin is not.
