Nets Don't Hesitate to Properly Identify Stevens as Republican

Photo of Brent Baker.

The ABC, CBS and NBC evening shows on Tuesday night properly identified indicted Senator Ted Stevens as a Republican -- though not very creatively as they all employed the identical language in describing Stevens as “the longest-serving Republican in the U.S. Senate” -- but they weren't so eager to name the party of Democrats in trouble in recent years.

ABC anchor Charles Gibson teased World News: “Indicted. The longest-serving Republican in the U.S. Senate is charged with lying about a quarter million dollars' worth of gifts and renovations for his home.” Setting up the story from Jake Tapper, with “(R)” in an on-screen graphic, Gibson repeated his “the longest-serving Republican in the Senate” line.

CBS's Katie Couric referred to Stevens as “a senior Republican” before reporter Jim Axelrod recited “the longest-serving Republican Senator ever” mantra. On NBC, anchor Brian Williams announced: “Tonight, Senator Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in U.S. Senate history is under federal indictment.”

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Back in March, the fifteen ABC, CBS and NBC morning and evening news shows aired in the first three days of the prostitution scandal with New York Governor Eliot Spitzer called him a Democrat just 20 percent of the time -- twice on CBS (one of those from Katie Couric), once on ABC, and never on NBC, which didn't tag him as a Democrat until the fourth day. Yet, the ABC, CBS, NBC morning and evening shows, in the days after the scandals broke involving Senators David Vitter (July of 2007) and Larry Craig (August of 2007), applied “Republican” labels on every show (100 percent).

For details, see the March 13 NewsBusters posting by the MRC's Rich Noyes. Or, the March 14 MRC CyberAlert posting, “Study: No (D) for Spitzer, Vitter and Craig Always Tagged as GOP.”

The Monday, March 31 MRC CyberAlert, “CBS Faster to Identify Party of Republican Than of Democrats,” recounted:

On Monday night [March 24], the CBS Evening News failed to identify Kwame Kilpatrick as a Democrat in reporting criminal charges filed against the Detroit Mayor, but on Friday night the same anchor, Harry Smith, used the very first word, of his introduction to a story on another politician in criminal trouble, to name the party: "Republican Congressman Rick Renzi of Arizona goes on trial next month, charged with using his office to steal hundreds of thousands of dollars. He denies breaking any laws, but the indictment spells out a string of alleged dirty deals."

A little under two years ago, then-CBS Evening News anchor Bob Schieffer avoided the party affiliation of a Democratic Congressman in introducing a Monday, May 22, 2006 story: “The government says FBI agents videotaped Louisiana Congressman William Jefferson taking $100,000 in cash from an informant and later found $90,000 in his home freezer...”

For the avoidance of naming Kilpatrick's party, see my March 24 NewsBusters item: “ABC, CBS and NBC All Fail to ID Indicted Mayor as Democrat.”

How the three broadcast newtork evening newscasts identified Stevens's party on Tuesday, July 29:

ABC's World News:

CHARLES GIBSON TEASED: Indicted. The longest-serving Republican in the U.S. Senate is charged with lying about a quarter million dollars' worth of gifts and renovations for his home.

GIBSON SET UP THE STORY: Well there was something of a political earthquake in the U.S. Senate today: A seven-count federal indictment was filed against Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, the longest-serving Republican in the Senate, on charges he concealed more than a quarter million dollars in gifts and services from an oil company which helped renovate his home in Alaska.

CBS Evening News:

KATIE COURIC: Now turning to Washington where Ted Stevens of Alaska has long been one of the most powerful men in the Senate. He's a senior Republican there and for several years, as President pro tem, he was third in line to the presidency. But now as Jim Axelrod reports, Stevens is facing criminal charges.

JIM AXELROD: He's the longest-serving Republican Senator ever. Tonight, Ted Stevens is also under federal indictment...

NBC Nightly News:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: He is 84 years old and from Alaska, and he just might be the single most powerful Republican member of the U.S. Senate going back a few decades. Tonight, Senator Ted Stevens, the longest-serving Republican in U.S. Senate history is under federal indictment, accused of accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts and favors without reporting them.

Pete Williams then provided a full story

Mayor vs Senator

I agree that the msm is not as quick to point out party affiliation, but this is a unfair comparision.

I usually don't hear party affiliation very often when it comes to Mayors. IE, I rarely heard Rudy Guiliani, Republican Mayor of New York Or Bloomburg Republican Mayor of New York.

This is the longest serving Republican Senator right now. If this was Senator Joe Biden and they did not mention his affiliation, that would be a fair comparision.

I would say it was around 50/50 when the msm talked about William Jefferson when it came to party affiliation.

Real life video games are cool

is this dry humor or

is this dry humor or what:)!

bravo

Ted "Cold Cash"

Ted "Cold Cash" Stevens,

There goes that bridge to nowhere your buddies were going to build.

I wonder if he will be perp walked?

I know how to win wars!

Biff

I'm assuming you see a lot of posters defending him here?

If they've got the goods on him, do you think we want him to continue in the Senate?

We don't want a Ted Stevens thumbing the nose at us as Byrd and Jefferson do you.

hang em high! see how

hang em high!

see how easy it is to have integrity, lefties:)?

but definitely don't try this yourselves - we conservatives are seasoned professionals

Seriously, you have to give

Seriously, you have to give a WWII vet some mercy.
I'd pardon Duke Cunningham, at this point, for his Nam bravery.

I know how to win wars!

it's certainly a bitch when

it's certainly a bitch when military heroes go astray...

but using that as an "get out of jail free card" would be a disgrace to the other vets who fought for our democratic (small d) rule of law

Duke already served two

Duke already served two years in jail, and he's in his 70's.

I know how to win wars!

So what?

Be sure to thank Timothy McVeigh and Lee Harvey Oswald for their service while you're at it.

Military means diddly when you've betrayed your country's faith in you.

Cunningham's $2 million is just what he copped to.  Sympathy can be found in the dictionary somewhere between sh*t and syphilis.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE

At the risk of speaking for

At the risk of speaking for the military members here at NB, I believe most military personell would be the most vociferous in maintaining that a fellow such as cunningham, or stevens, if duly convicted and serving a rightful sentence, should be the last to be pardoned. They don't take kindly to those who disgrace the uniform. You see, they hold each other to a higher standard because they hold themselves to a higher standard.

Thank you, Restless

And though It was only two years for me, I've earned the right to believe exactly as you just stated.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE

Cool,

Thank you for you service, and that goes to all who have served.

I must admit that not joining the military is one of those nagging little regrets that will stay with me. I find it a little difficult to listen to those who have served without feeling a little ashamed of myself.

No shame at all, Restless.  Good people are always be needed in a variety of callings.

i do concur and it goes

i do concur

and it goes double for a chicken hawk like me

Thanks Biff

I'm thinking Duke Cunningham resigned from Congress under a fair amount of pressure.

Not so much for your much esteemed chauffeur from Mass.  Teddy (the lifeguard) Kennedy.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE

not this again

Biff do you ever come here just to chill and talk to us, or it is always drama with you?

1) If this story is true we fully expect him to resign and go home in disgrace. BTW how's the left doing with all that pressure they're putting on Robert Wexler to resign?

2) Being a vet is an honorable thing but it doesn't give you a "get out of jail free" card. As restless has explained, the military is actually very hard on vets who break the law because they of all people should know better.

And as Cool explained, everyone from Timothy McVeigh to Jeremiah Wright served in the military. Andrew Jackson was the hero of the battle of New Orleans...right before he moved into the White House, forcibly overturned a Supreme Court decision, and pushed through legislation that lead to the Trail of Tears. But what am I thinking. You've proven many times on NB that you don't know crap about American history so that will all be lost on you.

Hurry now and check Wikipedia to see if I missed a technicality in my little history lesson you can catch me on.

Never mind the party affiliation

what happend to the Edwards story? He's a demolib, with a big (D), a love child and not a mention of the episode, never mind the affiliation. I guess when a demolib fools around it isn't news, but be a repub . . . .

There is no sense in being stupid, if you can't prove it! - my dad V

would that be "Rep."

would that be "Rep." Edwards? Rep. Edwards rep(publican)resents people in North Carolina - he's a Rep(ublican)resentative in congress...

MEANWHILE...

“REPUBLICAN Indicted. The REPUBLICAN longest-serving Republican in REPUBLICAN the U.S. Senate is charged REPUBLICAN with lying REPUBLICAN about a quarter million dollars' worth of gifts REPUBLICAN and renovations for his REPUBLICAN home.”

You know that the people

You know that the people over at the No Spin Zone are dying to lead with this story for the next year and a half. I'm sure that Bill O himself is gearing up for another Sean Hornbeck style rundown of child psychology.

People are looking into this and I'm sure we'll hear more eventually, but you just can't take a supermarket tabloid story and run with it.

certainly not... but if

certainly not...

but if the VP's chief of staff forgets a meaningless conversation from 2 years back - we can certainly run him out of town and jail the guy for treason, and even connect Cheney to it, as well as demand the impeachment of the President - without any evidence to support it whatsoever:)!

if you are a moonbat lefty that is

well, other than those>:(

well, other than those>:(

Flashking, You can't run

Flashking,

You can't run with a supermarket tabloid story and run with it?  WOW! now that is a standard that was NOT used when it came for the media to claim that John McCain had had an affair.

hmmmm...let us see.

It was a supermarket tabloid story.

The MSM, liberal pundits ran with it.

what was the difference?

Oh, my bad...silly me! McCain is a Republican, Edwards is a Democrat.  How stupid of me to expect fair and balance from the MSM, Democrats and the Liberal pundits of America.

The hypocrisy with which the media have dealt with this story and the non-story of John McCain having an affair is pathetic!

Need an Explanation

Can anyone here explain how the Senate disclosure form failures of Steven's were more serious than Harry Reid's failure to disclose his non arms length land deals?

easy, the explanation is

easy, the explanation is that harry is a democrat

so is REP. Jefferson from New Orleans...

and many many many many many many other corrupt democrats currently in office

Such as Barney "mr. madam"

Such as Barney "mr. madam" Frank, and Ted "the swimmer" Kennedy ?

why yes! those are some:)

why yes! those are some:)

Edwards "Love Child"

You seem to be jumping the gun a little on this Edwards love child story FastEd and by that I mean you are assuming the story is true.  According to the Enquirer story the woman in question, Rielle Hunter, has stated that a political operative named Andrew Young is the father.  The article goes on to say that an unnamed source says that Hunter told him or her privately that Edwards is the father.  Are you going to base your conviction on an unnamed source in the National Enquirer?  Perhaps you are the lab technician that performed the paternity test, or perhaps you are the unnamed source, or perhaps you personally know Riell Hunter and are the father yourself.  Pardon my sarcasm, but how can you be so sure this story is true?  Remember conservatives got burned on the Michelle Obama whitey story.

Wasn't Stevens the guy who threatened to resign

if the Senate didn't approve the bridge to nowhere?  I bet the Repubs wish they had let him walk.  This good ol' boy Senate has to be broken up one way or another!

Too bad he didn't resign

Too bad he didn't resign. What party does he think he belongs to, the democrats? The GOP won't keep backing a corrcupt politician. We get rid of ours.

Maybe that's why Alaska Governor Sarah Palin canceled the infamous "Bridge To Nowhere" ? She was trying to help purge the party by egging Stevens into quitting? ;-)

"They're both doofuses!" --Mark Levin (speaking of Obama and McCain)

Chuchulainn, Well, funn

Chuchulainn,

Well, funn you should mention this.

The main stream media didn't seem to mind running with the tabloid story of John McCain having an affair.

did you forget that?  what's the different.

Furthermore, I find it hillarious that anyone would bash the National Enquirer because they used an unnamed source.  THIS IS WHAT THE NEW YORK TIMES, WASHINGTON POST, etc do ALL the time!!!!!

Case in point is the story about Valarie Plame.  Journalists that wrote on this story constantly said that it was an unnamed source that told them about Valarie Plame.  The media, the left wingers seemed to be satisfied with this unnamed sources.  Why the hypocrisy?!

Today we know that it was Richard Armitage that told the reporter who Valarie Plame was, but the reporter never, ever, ever, gave up her source.  Novak and her constantly referred to the "unnamed" source!

The Liberal media, the Democrats and too many Liberals are such immense hypocrites!

Well ya' know folks...I

Well ya' know folks...I don't know if he is guilty or not...but it is nice to see some fellow compatriots demanding and accusing this man before he has had a chance to defend himself, unless you have been in his shoes, or anyone else when the federal govt, goes after you...I would watch what you say...

I am putting what I wrote earlier here...as if it matters to all who have their minds made up...

Let's see...where to start...first thing that came to my mind as far as all of the msm in any venue was REPUBLICAN would be mentioned numerous times, whether print or airwaves...which it has been so far...nothing new here is there... I watched the announcement from the Justice Dept. listened to all...I listened to Harry Reid and his presser in the Senate about the problems he is having not being able to go forward with his Speculation bill, and a few questions were asked about Stevens..., I listened to the phone calls from C-SPAN after the announcement and presser from the JD... Yeah I listened to all of it.

Just lovely...

Before I go further...if Stevens is guilty...he will have to pay, as it should be.

Now lets see...hypocrisy/bias knows no bounds...

Let me mention a few names here...forget about the Clintons...as far as that goes it is a given...they can get away with murder...and that is A-okay....and throw in the Kennedy family too...that is a given...

Now let just see how this started...from what I understand, this is from the Senate Ethic committee disclosure forms...ok, great, wonderful and dandy...this was started in 04 from my understanding...who I wonder reported, looked into, what reason did they have to give this information out and how would they know what was disclosed and not as far as being legal ect or non-reported...this was for false statements...7 counts...gifts, but no Quid Pro Quo...hmmmm...okay we shall see what happens...

This is from being involved with Veco in Ak...an oil related Co. I worked for them myself in Ak. Bill Allen is supposedly singing like a bird working with the govt. to reduce his sentence ect...I have also heard this includes some kind of lobbying to do with his son ect...

Okay...

This has to do with Veco doing favors for his home in Girdwood which is right near Turnigan Arm...not a hugely populated place at all...(or wasn't when I was there...it is near Anchorage...)

Ethics Committee information in the Senate....

WHEN, I mean WHEN are the republicans going to start demanding that the same information come out or looked into about Harry Reid and sons with his gifts and Land deals, Boxer and Son on land deals regarding Indian Casinos in Ca./Nevada, Feinstein and husband, Conrad and Dodd...Contrywide Sweet Deals...The Torch...zilch happened to him and his corruption, Mendendez...ZILCH happened to him with all his filthy dealing in NJ....Schumer for using his underlings for digging thought Michael Steele's trash ect...and Schumers filthy crap with Indy Mac....

This is payback for OIL..this is payback...I hope Cantwell is happy...Stevens was so furious after the vote for ANWR by missing it by one vote in the Senate thanks to McCain working with her...and other RINOs, the usual suspects...that Stevens told Cantwell she would pay for this...it does make one wonder what all was going on behind the scenes, there are plenty of behind the scenes left-overs in the JD from the Clinton administration...I would love to know the truth...

Last note on all of this...Reid had a presser I listened to...and the gasping gushing reporters asked him how he felt about all of this...he said, I have worked with Sen. Stevens since I have been here (I am paraphrasing here )...I have served with him my entire career, BUT I believe in the American Justice System, now it's up to the republicans what they do with him...then referred to Craig...of course on of the wonderful reporters said is this more of their Culture of Corruption....

Am I furious with their BS....

HELL YES!

I am furious with their HYPOCRISY...Hell YES!

Am I furious with the cover-up with their working arm in arm together with the dem party and their agenda to destroy and cover up, omit and obfuscate for the filthy leftist party....

Hell Yes!

The repubs had better fight back...

Btw...speaking of the JD...I have waited years for an indictment against WaPO, NYTs and authors/editors for treason, releasing classified info. during a time of war, that put all of us and our military in jeopardy.

I am MAD...and I'm not taking it anymore.

Sen. Stevens has been screwed on ANWR for over thirty years, he has been screwed and promised things regarding oil with hand-shakes before going out of sessions from the dems, he has been screwed by Carter, he has been screwed by some RINOs on our own side of the aisle...he has been involved in all of this since before Alaska's statehood...this breaks my heart.

That is my rant...I am so done...I wished people could of heard his floor speeches regarding the histroy of all of this...granted, he isn't/wasn't the best speaker, but he made you listen...well, me anyway.

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

BT,

I think most here are of the opinion that "if he is guilty" then he should pay the price.

In my opinion, if ANY congressman accepts ANY gifts from anyone but family and friends at Christmas, birthdays, etc..., then throw the bum out. Removing one from office is not indicting or convicting one of any crime. However, it is highly unethical for any congressman to take gifts from constituents, quid pro quo or not. They make too much money, and do too little to earn it, for me to ever accept this practice, liberal or conservative.

BTW, he may be right on ANWR, but the "bridge to nowhere" is an incredible embarrassment.

"This
liberal would be all about socialize -- uh, uh, would be about

Restless... I am so

Restless...

I am so tired...I do hope you saw where I posted if he is guilty he should pay the price above or however I posted it..you get my drift...

As to the Bridge to NoWhere..that had a lot more in the pork than just that bridge money wise for Alaska...I am not going into all of it, but is was a nice catch phrase, woked for the dems arm in arm with the msm and the rest of the nation...

I am so weary...if anyone thinks I am automatically sticking up for the repub side of the aisle just because..well... they don't know me very well...

"America isn't the problem...America is the solution." ~ Rush Limbaugh

um Shawn

The story is even better with William Jefferson.

As a voter, it would be silly to reelect him when videotape and $90,000 cash are involved.

Sure, let the criminal procedings go forward, but voters should be smart enough to come to the correct decision at the polls.  Obviously Jefferson's constituents aren't overly smart.

It's just really hard to bring a corrupt Dem to justice.  The party is too busy protecting them.

  • LYDSEXICS UNTIE

Shawn,

You have half a point there. Of course jefferson should have a trial, but that does not mean he was entitled to keep his seat. Think of it like civil court vs. criminal court. Preponderance of the evidence: beyond a shadow of a doubt. Any inkling of wrongdoing should lead to expulsion from Congress until the legal matters are cleared up. If one is found innocent, by all means, let them run again.
