CBS Castigates McCain Staffer for Accurate Obama/Wright Video

“The McCain campaign suspends a staffer for circulating an inflammatory video about Barack Obama,” CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric intoned as “Campaign Controversy” was plastered on screen over a YouTube video which simply intersperses clips of Barack Obama and Jeremiah Wright. Managing to twist Obama into a victim, a task made easier by the feckless McCain campaign, Couric set up a Thursday story: “A low-level aide to John McCain was suspended today for circulating an incendiary video about Barack Obama that's been viewed by tens of thousands of people on the Internet.”

Reporter Dean Reynolds cited as “troubling” how “a low-level campaign aide to John McCain has been circulating it.” Resurrecting the Bill Cunningham incident, Reynolds described the video as “one of several episodes in which aides, supporters, or surrogates have crossed the line and forced McCain to apologize or take action.”

In contrast, ABC's Jake Tapper took the Hillary Clinton campaign to task for using Wright's “inflammatory comments” to suggest Obama can't win in November, asking: “Is that dirty politics?” Tapper also uniquely raised (amongst the ABC, CBS and NBC evening newscasts) how Obama characterized his grandmother as “a typical white person.”

Story Continues Below Ad ↓

Meanwhile, Couric wondered if the Obama campaign believes “they've successfully neutralized the Jeremiah Wright controversy?” Reynolds confirmed “Obama is trying to build a firewall, a defensive firewall right now, and they hope they've started that process this week.”

A process no doubt helped by the type of effusive coverage of Obama's race speech provided by Tuesday's CBS Evening News. My March 18 NewsBusters item recounted:

"Barack Obama addresses the controversial comments of his pastor, condemning the words but not the man," CBS's Katie Couric teased before heralding: "And he calls on all Americans to work for a more perfect union."...

The CBS Evening News, following a lengthy report from Byron Pitts, brought aboard a panel of two from the far-left -- Jim Wallis of Sojourners and Debra Dickerson, a former U.S. News editor who is now a blogger for Mother Jones magazine, plus Jeff Greenfield of CBS News. Dickerson declared: "Obama was brilliant in this speech." Wallis insisted "the black pulpit is a place of truth-telling about the experience of black people."

The MRC's Brad Wilmouth corrected the closed-captioning against the video to provide these transcripts of the Thursday, March 20 stories:

CBS Evening News:

KATIE COURIC, IN OPENING TEASER: Also tonight, the McCain campaign suspends a staffer for circulating an inflammatory video about Barack Obama.

...

COURIC: Now to campaign '08, and another political shake-up. A low-level aide to John McCain was suspended today for circulating an incendiary video about Barack Obama that's been viewed by tens of thousands of people on the Internet. And while the Clinton campaign has remained mum about Obama's relationship with his pastor, Jeremiah Wright, it has given them an opportunity for some behind-the-scenes maneuvering. Here's Dean Reynolds.

DEAN REYNOLDS: For days, the Clinton campaign has been warning convention super-delegates that Barack Obama's relationship with his acid-tongued former minister makes him politically vulnerable. Indeed, Republican operatives have offered a timely sample of what they may have in store for Obama if he's the nominee. A video created by a conservative talk radio producer and running on YouTube is a grab bag of unflattering and unpatriotic suggestions about Obama. Perhaps more troubling, a low-level campaign aide to John McCain has been circulating it. And while he was suspended today, it's one of several episodes in which aides, supporters, or surrogates have crossed the line-

BILL CUNNINGHAM, TALK RADIO HOST: -is going to peel the bark off Barack Hussein Obama-

REYNOLDS: -and forced McCain to apologize or take action. And yet, it may raise questions about Obama's electability at a time when those super-delegates are making up their minds. It's a tough and unexpected job....

....

COURIC: Meanwhile, Dean, you talk to the folks in the Obama campaign on a daily base. Do they think they've successfully neutralized the Jeremiah Wright controversy?

REYNOLDS: The good thing from the Obama perspective is that we're having this conversation in March. If it were in October, they would be considerably more concerned about it. Obama is trying to build a firewall, a defensive firewall right now, and they hope they've started that process this week.

ABC's World News:

CHARLES GIBSON, IN OPENING TEASER: Hard sell: Obama called for a discussion on race. But the Clinton campaign may be using the issue to question his electability.

...

GIBSON: Next, we turn to presidential politics. In the two days since Barack Obama delivered his speech about race, some two million people have watched it on YouTube alone. Some may watch it for inspiration. Political opponents may be watching it for fodder to use in the campaign against him. Here's ABC's Jack Tapper.

JAKE TAPPER: Barack Obama wanted to have a national conversation about race. Well, he's getting one. Hillary Clinton's campaign seems to be using the inflammatory comments of Obama's minister, Jeremiah Wright, to make the argument to party insiders, or superdelegates, that Obama has too much baggage to win in November, as she seemed to acknowledge today.

HILLARY CLINTON: Well, my campaign has been making the case that I am the most electable.

TAPPER: Asked if Wright was part of that argument, Clinton only shrugged. Is that dirty politics?

PROF. LARRY SABATO, UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA: There's absolutely nothing fair about politics. If you want fairness, you should go into another field.

TAPPER: Clinton needed revotes in Michigan and Florida to help her catch up to Obama in delegates, but that's not happening. Her only path to the nomination is convincing superdelegates to overrule the majority of pledged delegates. Wright appears to be exhibit "A" in her case. Some are more hesitant about making this case. John McCain today suspended a campaign staffer for sending out a link to this video which links Obama not only to Wright, but the Black Panthers and Malcolm X. Obama's opponents, however, are not the only ones whose use of race on the campaign trail today raised eyebrows. Obama, on a Philadelphia radio station this morning, elaborated on his white grandmother's racial fears, which he mentioned in his speech earlier this week.

BARACK OBAMA, ON THE RADIO: She is a typical white person who, you know, if she sees somebody on the street, that she doesn't know, you know, there's a reaction that's been bred into our experiences.

TAPPER: Obama's campaign later clarified that he meant not, quote, "typical white person," but fears typical for his grandmother's generation. Lots of talk about race today, maybe not what Barack Obama had in mind. Jake Tapper, ABC News, Washington.

It is getting lots of hits on youtube

It gives people a chance to see the real Barack.I waiting to find one on Hillery's "sniper attack".

When the truth hurts attack your opponent.

When the truth hurts attack your opponent. Yes, CBS is McCain's opponent. All of the major news media outlets are opponents of McCain. Obama does not even have to run, the media is doing it for him.

There was not a bunch of lies in the video.

I thought McCain already took care of it. Where is the "Obama" like praise for McCain taking charge of the situation??

"Forget change, I want improvement!"

You wont see it from MSM

Still hope someone with the savvy puts up Hillarys video of her walking calmly during supposed sniper attack.

If we're lucky, Mac will fire himself 'twixt now and September.

And had he fired himself yesterday, I would be partying my ____ off tonight, to be sure.

He is apparently bent on losing this race, as I doubt he could beat even Wilma Flinstone at this point. Hell, he probably couldn't even beat Pee Wee Herman.

What a pathetic empty suit McCain is.

RD, I'd love to tell you to

RD, I'd love to tell you to buck up, but I don't see what there is to feel optimistic about. I keep saying McCain will end up campaigning FOR the Obama, and it looks like he's started. It wouldn't be any better with Her Royal Clintoness either.

Didn't he already say(at different times) that either one would be a good President? And didn't he use the derogatory term "gooks" not too long ago? Fire yourself, McCain! You can't have that in your campaign!

If he's not going to grow a pair between now and November (and there's no reason to assume that will happen), maybe he should just step aside and let HRC and the Obama fight it out in the GE. It isn't anywhere in the Constitution that we have to have candidates from different parties competing in the election, is it?

You're right...it's pathetic.

Enjoy the Ride

Right now, the Democrats are on a freight train that's speeding towards a cliff. No one can stop it but Hillary, and she won't until she is voted down on the 4th or 5th ballot in Denver.

Until then, sit back & enjoy the ride.

Right now, the Democrats

Right now, the Democrats are on a freight train that's speeding towards a cliff...
Captain Kirock

Explain. Elaborate.

Looks to me like they're (either one) headed for a pretty much uncontested election in November.

'68 & '72

Do you remember those elections?

In '68, the Dems protested & rioted themselves into oblivion.

In '72 they elected the most radical candidate they could find.

How will 2008 be any different?

In both those years they scared the hell out of America enough to elect Tricky Dick. (BTW, Nixon is the most intresting political figure of the 20th Century.)

As we speak, the wacky left are already planning protests in Denver because Hillary & Obama are not radical enough. How do you think that will play in "flyover country?"

At the same time, the GOP nominates a very centrist candidate who is strong on the war against terrorism. Unless something changes, McCain is a lock.

2008 will be different

2008 will be different because the Republicans don't have a candidate who is actually running for President. They have a panderer who wants to be "nice" to the Democrat opponent, whoever that will be.

Dem Unity in '08?

The GOP doesn't matter now. All the GOP has to do is put up a competent candidate, which they've done.

Hey, I'm not a big fan of McCain either but he is infitiely better than a radical liberal Dem. He has been disappointing on the offensive front, but there are others who can do the real work (i.e. Rush, Hannity, O'Reilly).

Dem unity is not going to happen. Who gave us that quote that Dems are a "circular firing squad?"

Right now, the Dems are eating their own. Both Obama &Hillary are creating an immense amount of resentment & hatred among their own members. Remember that Dems vote with their heart, not their heads. They are an emotional folk. They are an "all or nothing lot."

The infighting will get nastier. It will continue until the 4th or 5th ballot at the end of August.

I hope you're right, but I

I hope you're right, but I fear you're not????

BTW...is Kirock from the old Star Trek?

Take Heart, Motherbelt

We will defeat the swine in '08. By November, the Clintonites will hate the Obamanation & vice versa.

Yes, Kirock is from the old Star Trek. I'm impressed you knew. As someone wiser than myself once said, "Worst episode ever."

motherbelt, I want McCain out of this race.

He is no conservative, not even close. What is more, he has made no secret of his derision for conservatives in general.

He will complete the utter destruction of the republican party that has been underway since 1988. He will shamelessly cave to everyone who jumps up and says "boo."

He will lose badly to whoever the dems put up, as he is sorely lacking in the necessary mental sharpness to respond effectively.

What is more, the MSM hasn't even gotten warmed up in its attacks on the guy.

Old McCain.....

Is starting to look like your crazy uncle no-one talks about. I ask, what is wrong with that video?

On another note, anyone hear any mention of how McCain is is distancing himself from this type of politics? Any plaudits from the MSM?

Not a darn thing, in my opinion!

THIS is an incendiary video!!

I guess it's forbidden to point out the contradiction in what the Obama says and who his closest friend is.

Does McCain have the Fortitude to Win?

A President who is afraid of criticism by the media or his opponents will not be an effective leader. Does McCain have the fortitude to win this fight?

The staffer's commercial is an effective and accurate work. It contrasts Obama's words with the words of those closest to him.  The only weakness is the doubling of Obama's words via editing to make Obama appear halting.

If McCain is unwilling to use his opponents own statements against him, if he is unwilling to point out that his opponnent did not put his hand over his heart as required by law during the national anthem is McCain strong enough to be President of the United States of America?

McCain is willing to be harsh. But that harshness is directed at conservatives such as Mitt Romney not Democrats. McCain was comfortable enough to distort Romney's words about withdrawing from Iraq.  Perhaps it was because he had no fear of criticism by the press. Or perhaps he feels more comfortable with Democrats.

If this is how McCain wants to run his campaign, he could best serve the country by stepping aside and letting a Republican with the strength to fight for his beliefs run for President.

Spot on, I see no problems

Spot on, I see no problems with the video except the editing, they just let the people say what they said, maybe play it over without the hiccup. These are THEIR OWN WORDS. Someone should get fired for that, I guess that would be HATE SPEECH right??? It reminds me of that old joke, are you going to believe me or your lying eyes??

I don't even think he has the desire to win this fight!!

He's certainly not acting like it!

He's already he has "no doubt" that HRC would make a good President (then why on earth should anyone vote for you, John????)

I concur with one poster's

I concur with one poster's thoughts on this "release":

2 points:
1) Im glad the Obama campaign is avoiding “old-style” politics by digging up this picture and sending it out. Another example of saying one thing and doing another. Looks like he will do what ever it takes to win too.

2) If Obama wont completely disown this man and his statements, what difference does it matter that there is a photo with Bill Clinton.

The Obama campaign releasing this photo and pushing the story is the height of hypocrisy.

RRAM Tough!

NOTHING about this should

NOTHING about this should come directly from Sen. McCain's campaign, NOT ONE THING. Those of you who think McCain should open both barrels, the MSM story would shift from Obama's obvious bigotry and hate to "Republican candidate attacks Obama". Much of the MSM is already scrambling to get off this story to cover for Obama and start attacking conservatives.

This video and many like it should come from private citizens and media personalities, from all sides until the end of Obama's candidacy, they are perfectly fair and what is needed to do the job that the MSM won't do. But NOTHING should come from the McCain campaign. He should do exactly what he's done, stay above the fray and act like a statesman. As has been oft quoted here recently (I paraphrase), 'if your enemy is on the path to self-destruction, don't get in his way!'

Leader

It may be a good strategic move for McCain to not get involved in the Wright-Obama mess. However, his lack of loyalty in firing the staff member who put out the video speaks volumes about McCain.  He would have been better served by pulling the video if he did not like it.

McCain may think he can hide from the MSM. He cannot. They will come after him with guns loaded. Republican is a dirty word to members of the MSM.

Former minister?

"For days, the Clinton campaign has been warning convention
super-delegates that Barack Obama's relationship with his acid-tongued
former minister makes him politically vulnerable."

Former Minister? FORMER? Is CBS now claiming that Obama has left the church? Talk about spinning!

Telling the truth is bad!

Telling the truth is bad! Stop it stop it stop it, WAAAAAHHHHH!!

The Rocky Mountain Collegian: Illustrating Idiocy

"Former minister" Wright accurate, but spin nonetheless

CobraMan, Wright has retired as pastor of the church, so "former minister" is technically accurate. However, I'm sure CBS is using that technicality to try to throw cold water on this scandal.

When you put the clowns in charge, don't be surprised when a circus breaks out.

Blah blah blah... same

Blah blah blah... same ol'..same ol'....

As far as McCain goes...nothing new...he should just go by "I'm Sorry" One Note Johnie...

I posted the link to the true Youtube video statements and the information about Dayton being let go on Brent Bakers thread and on OT yesterday...this is frightening that McCain will back away from the video...in fact it is pathetic.

What in the world makes him think that others are going to play fair with him, or that the msm is going to support him?

What a political fool...IMO.

Then again McCain still loves sticking it to us conservatives out here every chance he gets...after-all he doen't need our votes...now does he?

I for one am glad of it.

McCain is nothing but a pandering RINO...always will be...I wished he would of just joined the dems when Kerry and Dashle asked him to....he fits right in...of course he and Lieberman could run together rather well, may do that yet...wouldn't surprise me one bit.

I thank him for his service but I admire Sam Johnson who is a real conservative congressman who was a POW longer than McCain, someone I am grateful for to-boot.

"... and forced McCain to

When "Mayday" McCain says he's got your back....run!
What a putz.

Nobody's forcing McCain to

Nobody's forcing McCain to apologize. He is only too happy to do so on his own. Unfortunately, it is a disease that has spread to too many on the right.

I've tried to find the

I've tried to find the thread I posted this in, but I can't and maybe I didn't hit "post comment"...i don't know.

But I am just furious that Republicans have chosen as their supposed standard-bearer this pandering "even Republican." I truly believe that people either felt bad that he lost out to Bush last time, or were too afraid of Romney whom they didn't know enough about, or just felt that it was "his turn" a la Bob Dole in '96.

So now we are left with a candidate who appears to be more interested in not having Democrats or the media say bad things about him, then he is in winning. I guess he figures if he gets out of this with the "independents" and the media still on his side, he will have won. There wasn't one darn thing wrong with that video, except that it was critical of Obama.

Well, he can just go on simpering when Obama praises his "50 plus years of service to this country, and go back to the Senate for another 10 when this is all over.

I am past fed up with him.

Republicans never, never learn!

Howdy mb... I feel the

Howdy mb...

I feel the same as you can see above.

I also heard on Rush today that McCain has hired a very liberal so-called repub to run his campaign or run something in his campaign that is pretty big...(I was in the middle of my basketball game and didn't catch it all...I am going to replay it sometime this week-end to hear it all and get her name to research and such)...just wanted to throw that in here.

Figures doesn't it?

"Never murder your opponent when he is committing suicide." ~ W. Churchill

The most pathetic thing

The most pathetic thing about McCain is that he actually thinks (apparently) that if he does all this, liberals and "swing voters" will vote for him! Is he that dumb?

Every time I start listening to McCain's supporters...

...and begin thinking that, yeah, maybe I do need to vote for him as the least of several evils due to his promise to appoint strict construction workers to the Supreme Court, he does something that is absolutely loony-tunes...this time essentially firing a staffer who supposedly, in McCain's opinion, but nobody else's on our side of the aisle, disrespected his utterly ruthless and ethically-challenged political rival by telling the truth in a rather humorous way.

So I'm standing by an earlier statement I posted in here: I will vote for NO CANDIDATE, for any office, that doesn't make a solemn, public and personal promise that he/she/it is against abortion, and is pro-life.  Period..."PERIOD" I SAY, BOY!

Then I'm off the hook with God on Judgement Day.  If my candidate goes back on his promise, he must answer to God for the lie, and for the blood and gore of murdered babies on his hands.  My hands will be lily white...oh, wait...I can't say that...my hands will be, uhhh...CLEAN...in that matter, anyway.  There may be other matters in which my hands are a bit mussed...I am, after all, just an old sinner, saved by Grace.  Not perfect, just saved.

I am a typical white person, although my spelling is above average.
