When a CBS News poll in July found 73 percent believed the surge of troops in Iraq was making the situation “worse” or having “no impact,” the CBS Evening News led with that number. But on Monday, when a new CBS poll discovered that percent had fallen 12 points to 61 percent, as the percent who think the surge is making the situation “better” jumped ten points from 19 to 29 percent, CBS gave it 12 seconds 20 minutes into the newscast. “Major attacks decline in Iraq: Military credits troop increase, civilian tipsters,” declared the headline at the top of Monday's USA Today front page. Katie Couric, however, ignored that report and, after briefly relaying the new poll number, couldn't resist highlighting “one thing that hasn't changed, two-thirds say that, overall, things are still going badly in Iraq.”
Couric had led the July 18 CBS Evening News: “In a CBS News/New York Times poll out tonight, nearly three out of four Americans say the troop surge is not working, that it's having no impact, or actually making matters worse.” On Monday, she acknowledged: “Americans are starting to come around on that troop surge in Iraq. In our CBS News poll out tonight, 29 percent say the surge is making things better. That's a ten point increase since July.” It's doubtful the ten percent who have come around are consumers of CBS or other mainstream media outlets which concentrate on the negative.
My July 18 NewsBusters item recounted how Couric led that night's CBS Evening News:
Hello, everyone. Senate Democrats failed today in their latest attempt to bring American troops home from Iraq. After a rare, all-night debate, they couldn't come up with the votes today to bring the latest troop withdrawal measure to the floor. And that is in spite of pressure from the voters themselves. In a CBS News/New York Times poll out tonight, nearly three out of four Americans say the troop surge is not working, that it's having no impact, or actually making matters worse. And nearly two out of three want the President to bring some or all U.S. forces home.
The two CBS News polls found the percent who believe the troop surge is making the situation “better” in Iraq grew from 19 to 29 percent while the percent saying the situation is “worse,” or the surge is having “no impact,” fell to 61, down from 73 percent a month or so ago. “No impact” fell from 53 to 46 percent and “making it worse” dropped from 20 to 15 percent. The CBSNews.com PDF comparing the July and August surveys.
Couric's August 13 Iraq news update about twenty minutes into her newscast, though it was followed by a story on the rescue of a malnourished Iraqi child whose picture was on the front page of Monday's New York Times, a topic also covered by the ABC and NBC evening newscasts:
Americans are starting to come around on that troop surge in Iraq. In our CBS News poll out tonight, 29 percent say the surge is making things better. That's a ten point increase since July. But one thing that hasn't changed, two-thirds say that, overall, things are still going badly in Iraq.
An excerpt from the August 13 USA Today top of the front page story, “Major attacks decline in Iraq: Military credits troop increase, civilian tipsters,” by Jim Michaels:
The number of truck bombs and other large al-Qaeda-style attacks in Iraq have declined nearly 50% since the United States started increasing troop levels in Iraq about six months ago, according to the U.S. military command in Iraq. The high-profile attacks -- generally large bombs hitting markets, mosques or other "soft" targets that produce mass casualties -- have dropped to about 70 in July from a high during the past year of about 130 in March, according to the Multi-National Force-Iraq.
Military officers say the decline reflects progress in damaging al-Qaeda's networks in Iraq. The military has launched offensives around Baghdad aimed at al-Qaeda sanctuaries and bases.
"The enemy had the initiative and the momentum in '06," said Jack Keane, a retired general who is a chief architect of the increase in troop levels and mentor to Gen. David Petraeus, the top U.S. commander in Iraq. "We've got it now."...

This good news is going
August 13, 2007 - 19:17 ET by bigtimerThis good news is going against their agenda...Sept. is coming soon.
They need to take a lesson from the NYT's at the moment that is, who are just covering the likes of Hillary's arse because they know the surge is working and most likely going to continue to work...
What fools the enemy within are.... going to be interesting.
Btw...they make the mistake of thinking the only source of news for the majority of people anymore is the Big #3.....
LMAO!

You're quoting a website
August 13, 2007 - 23:06 ET by Del DolemonteThanks for the comic relief.
You're quoting a website that was founded by Eason Jordan, the former head of anti-Bush CNN, who had to resign in disgrace after falsely accusing US troops of "murdering" journalists in Iraq.
Some time earlier, this same man also admitted that he and his network gave Saddam and his terrorist thugs a pass for almost a decade, just so they could keep their bureau in Baghdad open.
Are you sure you want to hitch your wagon to this guy's star? Bad news for the US in Iraq is good news for him.
Katie's Poll
August 13, 2007 - 19:28 ET by Mica the MagnificentCouric: The surge is not working. The surge is not working. . . .(pause ). . .
Now in an instant poll of our viewers of CBS News with me, Katie Couric, (of 50 elderly shut-ins whose nurses allow them only to watch CBS News) most of our viewers polled think the surge is not working.
The poll breakdown from the CBS Evening news viewers:
Question: Do you think the surge is working?
65% say it is not working. It is not working.
25% believe Katie will accidentally expose her nipple during a broadcast
10% think she's Walter Cronkite.
I am actually surprised
August 13, 2007 - 19:40 ET by general companyI am actually surprised they even mentioned it, let alone comparing it to previous data. Although I still think that poll is flawed, if you don't know that things are improving your, voting your agenda.
The poll is bogus to begin
August 13, 2007 - 19:43 ET by ckc1227The poll is bogus to begin with. Opinion about the surge isn't relevant to the facts, and the fact is the surge IS working.

Did anyone else notice that
August 13, 2007 - 19:45 ET by Ron was RIGHTDid anyone else notice that the 'Now' Percentage was on the left? Americans read from left to right, so most people list historical numbers on the left then newer numbers on the right. This is designed to trigger in peoples mind the passage of time. CBS intentionally reverses the numbers so that the uninformed or illiterate or barely conscience (read CBS evening news watchers) will believe that the poll is negative news (for Katey this is negative news).
CBS's dishonesty with polls
August 13, 2007 - 23:08 ET by Del DolemonteCBS's dishonesty with polls lately is legend.
Couric's bias is showing again
August 13, 2007 - 20:17 ET by ThisnThatCouric could have presented this as a news story. She's making $15M to be the nation's news anchor. She obviously doesn't want to present this information. Her bias is screaming out loud and clear. Katie, we have news for you -- you're exposed; your leftist friends can't help you anymore. You might as well just take your money and go join Daily Kos or something. Because you are absolutely worthless as a news reader.
Well the shift is coming,
August 13, 2007 - 21:24 ET by BlazerWell the shift is coming, and the Dems can count on dubious cover as usual from the MSM . Looks like they want to "come on in for the big win".
I hope they tone it way way down, but we all know they wont', the Libs will take just as much credit for victory as the troops themselves, all the while beaming their crap eating grins for the camera, hoping everyone will forget who said what.
Thanks to the MSM everyone will.................. well almost everyone.
Check out what Mr. I didn't vote for the war recently said.
"Answering a question on how he would refocus U.S. troops out of Iraq to better fight terrorism, he said, "We've to get the job done there and that requires us to have enough troops so that we're not just air-raiding villages and killing civilians, which is causing enormous pressure over there."
Earlier this month, Obama drew criticism when he said he would send troops into Pakistan to hunt down terrorists even without local permission, if warranted.

August 13, 2007 - 23:29 ET by jdhawkNB, why do you keep showing a picture of that woman, Perky . . . something or other?
Hasn't she been fired?
Why quote anything she has to say, as one poster already opined - only 50 shut-ins are still watching and they think they are still watching Walter Solicialistkite.
And, that number has got to be too high!

Crap
August 14, 2007 - 06:01 ET by ThisnThatThis film is crap. The media go out of their way to portray everything we do in as negative a light as possible.
Here's another example. This morning, AP is reporting on another major operation, "Operation Lightning Hammer". This mission's purpose is to kill Al Queda and make life safer for everyone. Know what the AP says about this, in paragraph #2? "Local officials, meanwhile, said four civilians, including a 3-year-old girl, were killed Tuesday during a raid by joint U.S.-Iraqi forces in Baghdad's Shiite district of Sadr City". In fact, there were 5 paragraphs dedicated to this.
What irritates me is that AP always highlights accusations of wrongful death and wanton killing by U.S. forces, and there are always these accusations associated with every single activity we engage in. What is AP's purpose here? To be objective? To put things in context? NO, of course not. Their objective is to do everything in their power to damn the United States of America.
Damn the AP.
Exactly
August 14, 2007 - 07:48 ET by rob6677And since AP, like most MSM doesn't have many people on the ground over there, they need only read here for the facts and stop making $h!t up.

My Latest Poll
August 14, 2007 - 02:15 ET by rob6677Katie is only about 0.03937% as cute as the t-shirt girl on NB, only that was about twelve years ago. CBS was never cute, and I am 93.7% sure the news would be better off with the t-shirt girl
Since I'm not up to date on the latest tactics, I'm only 27% sure of how they are conducted. Although I am 95.3% certain of their methods, does anyone know with a 100% certainty how they are taken?
Breaking News: A new poll taken only by me and my opinions says that I have lived 25% of my life while receiving 0% contact from any poll taken. Since I feel 75% sure that there's a 10% chance I may be contacted 0.01% of the future percentage of my life, I must also take into account that 15% of my opinion is based on another poll that states 50% of all polls are only 12% true. If this is in any way confusing please see my 57% favorite ambiguous movie speech by Chevy Chase in Spies Like Us. (that will only explain 48% of what 19% of you believe)
However, if more than 60% of you understand what I have said then you have an 83% chance of reading any of the 5% of comments I have made during the past 13.96% of this year. Is that clear?

They will only believe when we win
August 14, 2007 - 06:40 ET by jimmolinIt's hard for any American to understand that they would hate the President more than they love our great nation. The only thing that will stop this foolishness is winning the war. I think history will show that Presdient Bush is right to take the fight to them just as Abe Lincoln was right with the civil war. Presdient Lincoln was a lonely sole at that time much like Bush is today. Leadership is not politics and leadership is what will win this war. www.nowpolitics.blogspot.com
