Margaret Carlson: 'Democratic Base Is Really the Middle American Base'

Photo of Brent Baker.

The left-wing AFL-CIO union labor and Human Rights Campaign gay rights forums with Democratic presidential candidates held last week “suggest to me that the Democratic base is really the middle American base now,” former Time magazine Deputy Washington Bureau Chief Margaret Carlson declared on Sunday's Meet the Press. During the roundtable, Carlson, now a columnist for Bloomberg News and Washington Editor of The Week magazine, asserted that an “amendment to discriminate against gays” is not politically viable and “as the middle class feels in trouble, the labor position becomes a majority position.” She contended that “the person who won” the AFL-CIO “debate was the steel worker who stood up and said, 'I worked for 36 years and every morning I sit across from my wife, and I say' -- to the steel company -- 'why don't have I health care and why don't I have a pension?' They're bewildered by what happened.”

In fact, Steve Skvara, at the August 7 forum shown on MSNBC, targeted America for his complaint about why others don't pay for his wife's health care after his ex-employer, LTV Steel, went bankrupt: “Every day of my life, I sit at the kitchen table across from the woman who devoted 36 years of her life to my family, and I can't afford to pay for her health care. What's wrong with America? And what will you do to change it?”

As noted in my August 8 NewsBusters item, Skvara agreed with the call by John Edwards for universal, government-provided health care coverage.

As for the agenda of the Human Rights Campaign matching middle America, same-sex marriage does not enjoy majority support and Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards refused to endorse same-sex marriage. Two candidates, Joe Biden and Chris Dodd, did not even show up for the forum carried August 9 by CBS's Logo cable channel.

On the August 12 Meet the Press, moderated by David Gregory, Carlson appeared with Time's Michael Duffy, National Review's Byron York and NBC's Chuck Todd. Carlson maintained:

Well, you know, the labor and the Human Rights Campaign forums and debates this week suggest to me that the Democratic base is really the middle American base now. And if you look at polls on how people feel about things, it’s true. The fight that was had last time over gays, I don’t think we’re going to have that this time. I don’t think Bush saying there’s going to be an amendment to discriminate against gays, I don’t think that’s going to come up with quite that passion this time around.

And on the labor thing, the Democrats sounded, you know, like they would work your second shift, they wanted the labor vote so badly. And Mrs. Clinton said, you know, “I’m your girl.” But as the middle class feels in trouble, the labor position becomes a majority position. And the person who won that debate was the steel worker who stood up and said, “I worked for 36 years and every morning I sit across from my wife, and I say" -- to the steel company -- "why don’t have I health care and why don’t I have a pension?” They’re bewildered by what happened.

They are bewildered? So are we. So lets review: joined
union, which paid money to Democrats, to keep taxes high, to redistribute money
from (the needs of the many to screw the few). The Union and the (COMPANY)
reached a agreement that some how would kill.. the union and the company. So
after 36 years you don’t have health care for your wife. Well hell, let me get
my check book out right now. Now that I have paid for your.. health care, how
about you paying for my house? And.. my sons education, I hope its ok he wants
to go to Harvard.. And .. drive the newest BMW.. Its only fair, that should be
one of those rights that we presume that are in the Constitution.

We will find those rights right next to Abortion. Look there
is a open spot that seemed to be white out-ed. Its right where the second
amendment was..

That way, the new entitlement can become one of those
“rights” that never get smaller only bigger. We can elect the latest
presidential hopeful in 2008 and still pay for it in 2108..

I just love paying for my own vote, with my, (and son’s) and
(his son’s) and (his son’s son) etc... tax money!

Bewildered is just the word..

That's because the real

That's because the real middle american was not in attendance.

At first I thought the

At first I thought the quote said "the Middle East" was the Dem base - and I enthusiastically thought some Republican finally had the guts to point this out...dammit anyway...

Still waiting:(...

Chris Matthews asked Keith

Chris Matthews asked Keith Olbermann if Mr. Skvara would be the one to change American political history. Yeah, Chrissie, he's right up there with "Mr. Pony Tail" from the '92 debate, who asked what the candidates would do to be a "father" to all of us and take care of us.

Good point,USA...the man put his faith in the Union; that is who "screwed" him, to quote Matthews. People who join unions lord it over the rest of us, bragging about their privilege, how they don't even have to pick up a piece of trash off the floor where they work, they are so special. Then when, inevitably, the gravy train grinds to a halt, they want everyone else to do for them what the union did.

The sad part is the people don't see the similarities between what happened with the union, and government-paid health care. The government promises pie-in-the-sky, just like the steelworkers' union did, and people join the "union." Then when there's no money, the government can't just declare bankruptcy like LTV, but they can and do stop spending on innovations and equipment, close hospitals, and end up making people wait a year for an MRI, to save money.

Just finished reading a story about people in Canada, coming to the US for treatment, and then suing the Canadian government to pay for it.

The Ugly TruthAbout Canadian Health Care

It's a long read, but here's how it starts:

Mountain-bike enthusiast Suzanne Aucoin had to fight more than her Stage IV colon cancer. Her doctor suggested Erbitux—a proven cancer drug that targets cancer cells exclusively, unlike conventional chemotherapies that more crudely kill all fast-growing cells in the body—and Aucoin went to a clinic to begin treatment. But if Erbitux offered hope, Aucoin’s insurance didn’t: she received one inscrutable form letter after another, rejecting her claim for reimbursement. Yet another example of the callous hand of managed care, depriving someone of needed medical help, right? Guess again. Erbitux is standard treatment, covered by insurance companies—in the United States. Aucoin lives in Ontario, Canada.

When Aucoin appealed to an official ombudsman, the Ontario government claimed that her treatment was unproven and that she had gone to an unaccredited clinic. But the FDA in the U.S. had approved Erbitux, and her clinic was a cancer center affiliated with a prominent Catholic hospital in Buffalo. This January, the ombudsman ruled in Aucoin’s favor, awarding her the cost of treatment. She represents a dramatic new trend in Canadian health-care advocacy: finding the treatment you need in another country, and then fighting Canadian bureaucrats (and often suing) to get them to pick up the tab.

But proponents here continue to tout the Canadian system as a viable model for us. Where will WE go, and who will WE sue for the treatment we don't get here???

"Where will WE go, and who

"Where will WE go, and who will WE sue for the treatment we don't get here???"

MB, I am shocked you didn't figure that part out, it's just so simple, we will go to Cuba and then sue W!

Motherbelt,

I will have to get this article to my officemate, who is very liberal, and thinks Canada has the right idea (because a friend of her's from Canada raves about it, although they live here).

I find that article very disturbing, because that is where we will be headed if Hillary is elected. I have long said, I will gladly pay my share toward my healthcare, just don't tell me where I have to go and how much treatment I get. I love the fact that in the US you can take your children to the dr for the sniffles if YOU feel that it is necessary!

I was watching Ice Road

I was watching Ice Road Truckers last night on the History Channel. This show takes place in Canada, up around the Arctic Circle. One of the truckers was injured and had to be airlifted to a hospital in Yellow Knife.

He was there four days, his injury treated. But what surprised me was a bill he received for $12,000. That did not include the ambulance or the air lift charges. He was anxious to get back to work in order to pay his medical bills.

I thought in Canada his bill would have been paid for by the government. What am I missing?

Hmmm.....

Very interesting.... was this guy an American citizen by any chance?

If not, you prove another way that system is far worse than what we have!

"I may be crazy, but at least I'm not stupid" ME

on the mark

I think the previous comment nails the pathetic state of affairs that we find ourselves in - the once great American individualist has been domesticated by the religion of government and its acolytes.

In reading the blogpost and the subsequent comments i was reminded of a theory (I think) put forth by one of the guys at the powerline blog - that while we on the right inherently understand how economics and our (capitalist) economy works, the left seems to think that wealth is created by the allocation of "magic beans" that the individual that works hard and builds a company and along the way becomes wealthy, has somehow been given more of these "beans" than others. That the left when thinking about the economy, engages in "magical thinking" rather than considering the rational science of supply and demand.

Let me illustrate.  I come from a strong trade union background.  every other year i will visit home in the states and go to the Labor Day parade (put on by the local AFL-CIO  and now whatever splinter group).  While I am technically on the other side of the fence now, I do enjoy talking to old family friends and new people in the labor movement.  The conversations can be confusing to say the least.  For instance in talking to the leader of the local teamsters union  I found out he is a driver for UPS.  That day he delivered a speech decrying Walmart and globalization.  I asked him whether it was true or not that globalization has increased the amount of business for UPS hence increasing the number of drivers needed hence increasing the number of members?  The answer was yes but globalization is still bad.

The left seems to have missed the whole notion of a network effect - rush to develop and use ethanol, yet cannot understand when food prices rise and trees in brazil are cut down to create land for biofuel crops.

in light of the Logo LGTG debate is this a way of thinking a choice or is it biological?

RE: Marcie from Peanuts is back

PERFECT, USA!

I am saving your posted reply so I can use it in heated debates with my union/democrat reletives who think all their problems (stemming way back to the 1970s) are a result of Pres. George W. Bush, and the Republicans.

The NE Ohio area I live in has been in a union and democrat stranglehold for decades and decades and decades.  Their gripes, bitching-and-moaning, has NEVER subsided in all those years ... even when the democrats were in complete power in D.C. ... No, the angry barbs were then aimed at the companies and managements ... never the unions or democrats they were/are slaves to like some sick relationship between junkie and drug dealer.

Every time one of my union/democrat relatives spout that mantra "the democrats are for the poor and the working man ..." I retort, "Oh, you bought and paid for that, alright!  Yeah, they're for the poor and working man ... their for keeping the poor poor, and for keeping you working for the union that keeps the democrat pockets full ... If anything changed for the better for the poor or the working man in this country the democrats wouldn't have a voting base."

".......and debates this

".......and debates this week suggest to me that the Democratic base is really the middle American base now."

There is also a debate about Santa Clause that suggest to me he is real. Of course the debate is over about the tooth fairy!

"And if you look at polls on how people feel about things, it’s true."

Guess what Margaret I have a pole in my back yard that tells me your a flaming idiot. Well, it's true, the poll said so! Of course I watched "In Search Of" and truely believe Bigfoot exists because Leonard Nimoy use to be spock and that guy was soooo smart!

This is one of those things that the limo liberals want. Its
like tax increases. If they are so.. inclined to I would like to see them put
their money where their mouths are. If you want universal health care, pay  for a bunch of poor ex-iron workers
health insurance. If you want tax increases, donate a few of those big pay
checks over to the IRS, I’m sure they wont mind.

I think that there is going to be a awaking in this next
election. The left that thinks middle America is starting to look for Mao’s
little red book is mistaken. The Democrats ran pro life, pro gun
candidates  the last go around and
barely won. With the help of the MSM and a large batch of pissed off
Republicans.

Americans do not like to loose wars.

Americans do not like their taxes raised.

A majority (IMHO) hates a nanny state.

Americans WANT OUR DAM BORDERS CLOSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The biggest point for Republicans. NO RINO’s

I would hope that some of the standing Republicans have been
watching what is going on.

Stop the spending, win this war, make tax cuts permanent,  punish companies that hire illegals ,and
for Gods sake, close the border!

This is number 2 on the

This is number 2 on the lying talking points of the Dems, "We are really the center."  You will be hearing it again and again as the election approaches.

Number 1 is "We are tougher on terror than the Republicans."

They will be repeated ad nauseum until believed.

Sure . . .

"We are really the center."

"We are really the center."

You know, they may be right. Many who used to be "mainstream Democrats" are now succumbing to the lure of the far left, with its advocacy for ever more redistribution of wealth and a union-like gravy train where everything is free. What they don't see is the train wreck down the road when the government programs run out of money, just like the unions bled dry the companies they contracted with. And even then they won't understand that they were the instrument of their own destruction. They really will be "bewildered" by what happens.

I am a Canadian.  Only basic health care is covered in Canada.  Ambulance, air lift, drugs, etc are not covered.  Also, health care is not free in Canada, it is payed for with taxes collected by federal and provincial government.

Also, health care is not

Also, health care is not free in Canada, it is payed for with taxes collected by federal and provincial government. -bertdw

We need to change how we refer to "government money." Any time we talk about having the "government" pay for something, the term "taxpayer dollars" or simply "the taxpayers" should be substituted. When people realize (I mean REALLY realize, as in having the fact shoved in their faces) that the "government" doesn't have any money of its own, attitudes on what to provide for "free" might begin to change.
